No doubt Chino wasprobably wasted but I doubt that is the sole reason for the poor vocal performance. Maynard did better but wasn't spot-on himself. They're aging and still trying to sing songs written with high vocal ranges without changing the key beyond recognition, they play night after night, which will definitely do a number on your cords after a while, and of course drinking and smoking only add to everything else. As for Chino yelling over Maynard's part, I bet he just wanted attention because he knows everyone worships Maynard, lol.
I agree on the maynard worship theory, the problem with the voices....you could hear the possibility inside their singing, it had nothing to do with their inability, they just swerved it.
But this is from 2001. Literally after White Pony released. Chino got wasted too often unfortunately. Chino has never been an amazing singer but definitely the best vocalist for Deftones. He does some dope shit and sound good when he wants too. But nowadays he definitely can't do all the shit he used to do. Same goes for MJK.
