What’s faster in a drag race… an 85 horsepower Superkart, or a 710 horsepower Ferrari?
This is the battle of power vs weight, with the Ferrari weighing almost 10 times what the Superkart does!
We run these two cars through four challenges: a standing quarter-mile, a rolling quarter-mile, 0-100-0mph acceleration and brake test and finally, our favourite, the Moose Test.
This Ferrari 488 Pista has 710 horsepower and 770-newton metres of torque. It only has one engine, which is a 3.9 litre twin-turbo V8. It has a 7-speed, dual-clutch paddle-shift gearbox and weighs 1280 kg. With all the bells and whistles, this Pista cost £350,000.
The Ferrari is up against a Division 1 Superkart, it has 85 horsepower and weighs just over 200kg with the driver. It has a 2-stroke 250cc engine, driving the rear wheels through a 6-speed sequential gearbox. You can pick up a superkart for as little as £8,000.

@@kyolek9485 Doesn't look like it would flip easily, and being 2-stroke you have to rev it's tits off to get into the powerband, so I doubt it would be that scary unless you're really pushing it.

Superkarts are underrated. I once heard from an F1 driver that it’s the closest you can get to an F1 racecar
As an F1 driver himself, I'm sure the closest he can get to an F1 racecar is an F1 racecar.

@@1barnet1 Hmm.. with pretty much no suspension, its actually important for both, especially on a Superkart. Ex Rotax Max 125 karter here.

power to weight is compareable. The 488 is known to have zero lag whatsoever.
And the ferrari has a much higher top speed then a super kart. meaning it will probably out accelerate it at higher speeds at the end of the test.
Regardless of the tracks surface.
The braking test however is just about rubber and traction.
No contest on a smooth surface with those sticky go-kart tyres.
That kart looks both like a blast and a nightmare to drive. I love it.

It wasn’t fair to the superkart that there is grass growing out of the runway, especially when they did 1/4 mile.
This is a 400hp turbocharged Scott Mansell against this Super_GT who's been eating nothing but discos to see which one can run down this street quickest.

Many drivers start their careers in karts, super karts and other forms of open wheel racing

The pista did 10.5 quarter mile on carwow. Here it did 10.2. I don't know which one to beleive. 0.3 sec is huge

Carwow brought the Ferrari Pista a couple times and it never did better than 10.5s it’s a huge difference. I wonder what would be the time of a Porsche 911 turbo S 🤷♂️ would it be under 10 seconds stock? Doesn’t make that much sense

On the majority of race circuits the kart would murder this Ferrari. On many circuits superkarts do similar lap times to Moto GP bikes. Although they lose out on top speed (about 140 mph) they more than make up for it through the corners.
As a life long Ferrari fan, I have to say that the GoKart would be more fun to drive.
And 130k cheaper. Power to weight of an F1 car . Drive one enjoy 260kmh 75mm of the ground, it feels like 400 😅

I’ve raced 125 gearbox karts and they just are unbelievably quick on acceleration, braking and cornering. The whole concept is so different from a car - no suspension, no differential, wide sticky tyres that last a meeting if you’re lucky, disk brakes on all four wheels big enough to stop a small car. The super kart in the video would beat the Ferrari hands down round most U.K. racing circuits, maybe not at a really fast track like Silverstone but definitely somewhere like Cadwell park.
At the start of the vid he called it a go kart. I nearly got chucked out of my first meeting by the chief marshal when I did that!

Loving the new channel, it's like mythbusters mixed with 1320 video, but Scott gives it that classy edge.
Nice video. One suggestion for the moose tests: can you put a static camera facing the course head on? I think this will give the best perception of speed and cornering ability. The panning from the front 3/4's angle diminishes some of that.

I'm getting sick and tired of people thinking they have to spend $300,000 +++ to go fast or to get quick lap times. Lotus, Radical and a few others understand physics. It's hard to imagine a sub $50K dollar car being able to do the Nurburgring in the high 6 min bracket and yet idiots will continue to spend all kinds of dough $$$$ to go faster.

I'm sure the superkart is WAY more fun... for WAY less money. The kart also doesn't have traction control. Turn off the TC on the Ferrari, and re-do the drags. The kart heated his tires because... he is using racing tires, which have crappy grip until they get up to temp.
For the superkart to perform any test that involves grip, such as braking or getting off the line, it needs to bring it's tires up to temp, it's a racing machine, on cold tires it won't work at all.
But of course bringing it's tires up to temp is not practical because it involves spending a couple of minutes lapping a track.
Ok How many of you noticed that the drag race was only on one side the kart was on the outside why? Strange thing is that 85HP superkart is low power from the normal ones 250cc puts out over 100HP and in my day with old 250cc motorbike engines in the superkarts 25 to 40 HP and top speed of 140MPH. To day modern superkarts can do 170MPH if allowed. No i would never want to drive old cars like that Ferrari or a Porsche reason is they are pointless in towns to day like even London they are next to useless better off with a slow electric scooter or Bicycle as will get to places far faster. Our roads speed restricted some 20MPH motorway speed cameras 70MPH. Now a tank race that is different just one thing Fuel and the pollution is like 20 huge lorries or 15 percent of a jet airliner. The real future is only to use hydrogen as can fuel piston engines Vehicles also can make electricity two ways to use hydrogen. Soon it will be easier to make and store hydrogen as Manchester University is the number one on research and already invented new safe storage.
An F1 monkey would be lost in a SuperKart, without some telemetry noddy in his ear constantly- He would actually have to drive, without instructions 😂😅😊

C'mon guys please learn from the mistake Carwow keeps making!! PLEASE USE A DRONEEE!! Those things make the best shots from above, definitely when the two cars are really close at finishing....
Kart needs smoother surface and tire warmers to perform properly. In lieu of tire warmers, they should've just run it on wets even in the dry as they are softer and work better in lower temps. Real dry slicks need to be at something like 170 F to perform to max potential, no way to get that with just a quick drag run or braking test.
why there is no motorcycle engine in that kart? GSXR 1000 (180HP) R1(200HP) etc...???
Karts NEED a smooth course with no suspension. Lets run the same game with struts all around on the Ferrari and see what happens.
David Coulthard tested Martin Hines Superkart, and he said that he will never drive one again.
He claimed that it braked as hard as an F1 and had 2G cornering force on mechanical grip.

Why are reviewers not doing these same tests with EVs? The best EVs are a tad quicker in a strait line but in terms of repeatable strait line performance they aren't even close and then when you factor in handling and braking they are still in a different league. It is bizarre to me nobody hammers them for their weight, complexity and their overall manipulation of data.
ok someone needs to put a Hayabusa engine in a superkart. over double the power, plus more weight on the rear tires would be insanely fast and likely easily wipe the floor with the ferrari

You know if you just picked one of the modern literbikes, It would beat the Ferrari by more than one second... And be a lot more comfortable then that kart.
on an actual flat surface the cart might win but it's bumping so much it's spending 1/20th it's race in the air, it's really not fair XD
just goes to show you though modern supercars, they are actually hard to beat rodding a tiny light weight vehicle platform just isn't enough anymore.
Not an equal test for the moose test - the distance from centre of mass to inside wheel for the Ferrari is much larger than for the kart, this means that the effective radii of turns travelled for the centre of mass is smaller.
Why doesn't anyone design a streamlined kart for drag racing? The number one thing holding them back is air resistance, because they don't have the horsepower to overcome it. A very well streamlined kart with 85 hp could probably go 200 mph, at least!
a) Why is the superkart only 85hp, they run 100hp in racing. b) Try some turms on dry surface. c) Just do some laps around a circuit and watch the amazing Ferrari get trashed.

Judging by how anytime Scott talks about a motorsport different and proceeds to talk about how slow they are compared to F1 all the time, I wouldn't be even a little surprised if he engineered and pre-meditated an event to make sure who he wants to win wins.
