- Ferrari 488 Pista drag race is fairly normal these days on RUclips, but a Ferrari Pista vs a Ferrari F40 drag race has to be a first!
Of course you wouldn't normally race a brand new top of the range supercar against a 30 year old modern classic, but we wanted to see what 3 decades of engineering advancement looks like.
the Ferrari F40 was designed to celebrate Ferrari's 40th anniversary and was the last Ferrari ever to be personally approved by Enzo Ferrari himself and today we put it up against one of the fastest road cars on the planet, the Ferrari 488 Pista.
This one’s a Spider and does the 0-62 sprint in a mind blowing 2.85 seconds, has a top speed of 211 mph and a massive power to weight ratio of 520 horsepower per ton.
Both are race cars for the road, both have V8 twin-turbos, but surely…. there can only be 1 winner….

Just equip the f40 with an automatic gearbox and the difference is even thinner, and by a lot.

Just curious .. were there many practice runs? I saw a video a while ago on the Top Gear celebrity lap times where they spoke of lots of practice, test laps, and that the actual laps they use for the show are the best of many! 😃

In the time it took him to shift from 1st to 2nd, I made myself a sandwich, enrolled, went to and graduated college, made my bed, and watched the entire Fast n Furious film franchise.

@@steviesindahouse4903 once the wheels are spinning the clutch is doing nothing, so better for clutch life to use the tyres as a clutch
Looks like Tiff fluffed second, lost a ton of time there. But wow how Tiff got off the line.
Tiff doesn't fluff, it was the cars fault.
Probably the turbo lag aswell in second F40 was notorious for it that pista has zero turbo lag thanks to technology
Nope. The f40 has a dogleg pattern shift. Change from 1st to 2nd was notorious difficult to master. You have to train everyday

We have been concentrating on 1/4 mile sprints but perhaps this is something to look into in the future.

Definitely would be interesting to see, for that f40 to have a poor start of around 5.5 seconds to 60, yet still hit the standing quarter mile in under 13 seconds is pretty crazy. It must really take off when it isn’t spinning its wheels

Tiff's reaction time when the flag dropped was spot on and the launch was perfect. You can clearly tell this man has been racing cars for a living 😊👍

@@lovecarsTV The impression I got was one of desperation not to crash gears. And honestly who could blame him. I had a ride in Nick Masons F40 when I was a much younger lad. 'F40 NPG' was the plate. What a machine.

How did the 488 driver manage to do a quarter mile in pista that slow? Absolute respect for the F40 owner and the driver launched it so good
Best motoring did 11.2 with F40 at 402m in 2000. Pista is at least 10.5 sec.

He was a pro driver that's why. Not like the guys on top gear.
The second a guy in my F40 says “I haven’t driven stick in a while and I’m afraid I might shift into the wrong one” is the same second I immediately stop the race before it even starts. Respect the car.
Should have done at least one more run to nail the change into 2nd
And to nail the clutch probably
Probably due to it old car plus turbo lag on the F40 always occured from second gear
yall should have pointed out the trap speed difference! 121.2 vs 117.6! That F40 was not far behind. Imagine what some practice and good clean shifts would look like. Not saying the F40 would have won but the 0-60 times vs the trap speed mph, makes it look like the F40 was gaining ground
The Pista didn't have a great launch either, it can get easily under the 11s mark
@@projectr2451 yeah the best you can get is 10.1s (based on DragTimes) but on other ytb channels like Carwow they usually get 10.5s with a good launch
Until the end of the first gear the F40 remains ahead !!!!!! Even with manual start and lots of wheel spin !! And in any case, even in the end the difference is not excessive! Incredible

Based on the trap speeds at the end of the 1/4 mile, I wouldn't be surprised to see the F40 keep up.

Don't exaggerate. Yes, the F40 is undoubtedly great and legendary car but Ferrari has made much better and faster cars since then. I'm sure Enzo Ferrari would be much more impressed by that 488 Pista.
@@horsepower523 if ur not a car guy you dont understand why f40 is the greatest its not all about the best technology or the best performance its about the experience and the driving experience and the history and how ferraris made cars too “luxurious” and people wanted something raw something that is a race car on the street and they couldn’t have done it better. If you ask 100 car guys who actually can appreciate cars 90% would take the F40 over the enzo
@@gabuw6011 I am a car guy, but I rate innovation and technological advancement over nostalgia. The modern Ferraris are all better than the F40, that's a fact. The only thing the F40 is better at is the legend and mythical aura created by the fact that it was the last car approved by Enzo himself and it was the first car to break to 200mph barrier. But in terms of driving quality and speed the modern Ferraris are much better. The F40 was the best supercar during the 80s and early 90s but compared to today's Ferraris it's just a beautiful and great classic.
Nostalgia has its own value, no doubt, one of my personal favorite Ferraris is the F50 because it was the first Ferrari I fell in love with as a kid, but do I think it's better than 488 Pista? No, absolutely not because it simply isn't better.
Like Enzo Ferrari said: *"The best Ferrari ever built is the next one".*

Back then, had the fame of a 30 minute car. Because after that, you'd like a cool drink and a brief nap.

Tiff bogged a bit, spun then committed the cardinal sin. of letting off when he screwed up the 1-2 shift.
Otherwise the pista likely wouldn't have run him down until somewhere around 3rd gear. 🤔
What's amusing is how much bigger the f40 appears to be in comparison. Yet it weighs so much less.
Similar displacement twin turbo high revving motors. I'd like to see a pista or tributo against a stradale!
What are you talking about? The F40 weighs 16kg less. Hardly anything. And this is the Spyder with the folding roof mechanism etc.

Ferrari will always be the only car brand that can make my heart beat faster. Those red machines are just so beautiful and special. The Prancing Horse is the greatest legend in automotive history.

The F40 has no chance, 3rd gear is super long it would take 3 seconds to get past boost threshold and boost lag.

Not in terms of power to weight 👍
Lovecars @ laf aperta has still better power to weight: 949hp to 1533kg. The weight for the pista(1384kg) is a dry weight, Kurbweight would be ~1500kg, so laferrari Aperta is better no doubt
How many of you have missed the whole point of why they used this and not the LaFerrari is shocking and they even say why in the video 😂🤪
@@matzepizzaheld8541 They used the 488 Pista in this video because it has a V8 turbo engine just like the F40. LaFerrari has naturally aspirated V12.

What is a role race?
@@markfox1545 a drag race from a rolling start. Say 10 - 20 mph for instance. When you then put the power down, it's much easier on the engine, clutch and gearbox.

I've seen F40 in the road traffic once in my life... In Cheltenham on the roundabout near by GCHQ. I still remember this view as looking at the picture. Massive impression!

@@lovecarsTV I've seen it not so long time ago... It was in 2015. Coming back from France I've spotted Porsche Cayenne with the half egg shaped trailer awaiting ferry to UK. During waiting Porsche's driver stepped out of the car and opened the trailer side door and there was F40. Even at night I've recognized it from 30m distance seeing the back spoiler. After arriving UK I was coming back from work and being stopped at the first line on the traffic light on the roundabout I've noticed F40. It was stopped from opposite side in the first line...
The loser was the winner.

Only ever seen one f40 in the flesh in the 90s when I was at Uni in London, parked up in South Kensington. Even then it looked so impressive I had to touch it, beauty!

How old are the tyres on the F40? It might help a bit to put today tyres on it to get the car even quicker of the line with less wheel spin.

Good to see a proper start off the line. I learned that on a Knockhill driver experience day from BTCC driver Anthony Reid. Used it a few times, it's effective. Lost half a second with the gear change, but the result would have only been closer not reversed. So cool to see the F40 taking off!
