Greetings from Finland. I drive a 91 Caprice Classic and my dad just bought himself a 93 Grand Cherokee with the 5.2 but with a newer model transmission and we love our 90's American cheap luxury cars, and I just wanted to say that the Fifth Avenue is one of my favourite cars, and I am so jealous for how little money it went for. Both the Caprice and Jeep we bought were purchased for around the 3500€ mark. Loving this series so much.
Please show us taking this Jeep to your amazing mechanic and share what's all right (and wrong) with a final summary of repairs needed. You both Rock!!
Only thing it'll need for sure is the vicious coupler in the transfer case, the vehicle display repaired (think there's usually a bad solder joint that causes the flashing), and I heard a squeaky pulley that needs replacing.. Other than that just the normal maintenance stuff that hasn't been replaced or serviced yet and she'll be good to go 👍👍
@@BabyCharlotteschannel I had a 95 that showed the rear lights being out for most of it's life. I was always told it was more trouble than it's worth to fix.
The 5.9L trans was beefed up, but still required an annual flush and filter change to keep it running. This is especially if you're out doing Jeep things on the trails and power-pulls on the streets. Kinda wish we hadn't sold ours. 275,000 on the original motor and still an absolute beast.
BEST SERIES ON RUclips absolutely love this. The energy between these guys is amazing. Fit together like a nut and a screw. Excited to see what eles yall have in store with this duo!
I'd love to see a little money put into that GC to see what it could flip for. That would be an awesome series in it self to see this go from "cradle" to grave (flip). Well done fellas!
The jeep was the ultimate score. I owned one for 15 years and had no problems with it until around 190 thousand miles. I put a for sale sign on it just to see what i would get offered for it and sad to say someone stole my jeep right from the block it was parked on and my friend Brendan u just stole this one at $1300. I would love to get my hands on another one...and I had the white one too. Great job Brendan!
Yep, I think I've had at least 5 of them at this point. A '96 4.0 from Georgia in superb condition, 235kmi when bought for like $800 I think. Then few others including some 5.2 and other 4.0's and then a 5.9 with 310kmi in mint condition for like $1200, and I think the latest is another 4.0 that was pretty mint for like $1800 I believe.. Next one will be a real low milage, super clean, garage kept sweetheart of a ZJ!!
Yes! Chrysler leather of this era smelled "expensive" to me if it wasn't lol I was a teenager in the late 90's who used to go dealership-hopping and remember these vividly.
Happy owner of a 1997 ZJ Orvis edition V8, best looking/version Grand Cherokee ever for me, love that green interior. Very soon applying for Collector plates here in Canada. I want to buy another one.
Finally a V8 Grand Cherokee for the channel. Take this one on the hard off-road course! Not only was it the fastest SUV in 1998, but it was 4x4 of the year as well!
That Grand’s intake need to come off and have a new gasket underneath. Lots of work, but it’ll cure up that oil smoke, right quick. To be sure, when warmed up, check the oil fill for suction with it idling/revving. You’ll know.
I worked in prototype in the late 80s and would prep M Body Chryslers for crash tests. We needed to take the front passengers seats out for the tests. As a result we were allowed to take them for personal use. I used a couple for my deer blind. I had one that I sat in for 25 years and only stopped doing so due to selling the property. I would hope that the seat is still there and being used.
Brendan: The Jeep 5.9's benefit greatly from bolt ons. The Mopar chip is supposedly worth something like 30 hp, and any good tune should be worth equal or better. Full 3" exhaust will net serious power, as will an intake and ported kegger or M1 manifold. There are 5.9's with heads/cam and bolt ons into the 13's. Something to do with all that money you didn't spend!
I had a ‘95 Ram 5.9 with the dealer installed R/T package (cam, computer, headers, exhaust and K&N filter.) Supposedly good for 300 hp. Both heads cracked at 69k miles. 😢
Fun video. For every day use, pretty hard to beat a 3800 Series II. There's still no other large, comfy sedan that gets that sort of mileage. It was always surprising about those big W bodies that if you go the speed limit or under, you can get right up on 30 MPG. Super impressive. Very reliable, simple and easy to fix when they need to be, parts are available everywhere. That Grand Cherokee 5.9 is for sure the more interesting/rare vehicle of the 3. But the 5th Avenue in that red color also holds a special place. My grandma had one years ago. Super comfy boat. It was replaced with a 98 Grand Marquis eventually, which she really really loved.
The 90s V6 cruisers were so much more efficient than modern luxury cars. My buddy’s 97 Concorde gets up to 40 mpg. Meanwhile my grandma’s 2017 Lincoln MKZ averages 18 with a smaller engine.
I literally cheered for Brendan when he got the ZJ. LOL Hope to see it in videos in the future because that is definitely an under rated bad ass machine.😁
I know TFL did a bunch of content on the 2nd generation Escalade earlier in the year but it should be on this list too. I ended up picking up an 04 Escalade ESV (Suburban sized model) with only 44k miles on the 6.0L after the go big or go home series. I have not been disappointed with it.
Had the 5.9 1998 new ,blk on bk ,gold pin striping, stop light to stop light terror ,very reliable, til a lady in 2005 yacking on her cell phone T-Boned me and totalled my Limited, great Jeep!
Here in Texas near South Padre Island these Jeep Grand Cherokees go for big big money, even with high mileage. This would easily be $3500+ here. Great beach vehicle.
A friend's family inherited a 1984 Fifth Avenue in about 1986 or so. His dad was not at all wild about it until he drove it on a long road trip. Then he was a believer. That thing would make the miles float by!
That 5.9L is an absolute steal at $1,300! It's essentially the precursor the SRT8 and Trailcat! I think it'd be fun to build that up into something akin to a sleeper for the street!
I had an 83 Fifth Ave as my first car. Our family owned it for over 15 years. I’ve been thinking about getting one in place of my Daytona. Such a wonderful car and super comfortable. I miss it like crazy.
The automatic used in the 5.9L limited grand cherokee was the same as the one with the 5.9L gas engine dodge ram. It was a 46RE, difference is the started bolted on the opposite side on the grand cherokee vs the dodge ram. The 5.2 grand cherokees used a 44RE and it wasnt up to the task. The big killer of the chrysler RE, RH transmissions was the thrust washers they used between the planet carrier and the sun shell. They wear out and it loosens the clearances and tolerances and the transmission would eat it self up, basic transmission fluid changes held off the inevitable for a while, if they would have used thrust bearings, it would have been a much stronger transmission I own one that is the same color as yours, but I dont have the running boards though
I use to drive a Grand Cherokee like that back in the day. I love it and it was the state of the art. The only negative was…. It didn’t brake to good and the transmission wasn’t smooth specially when you put it on reverse.
That was fun. I would have gone for the 3800 v6 GM sedan with 61k miles. Those things are relatively indestructible and they ride nice and are peppy. I prefer the Buick and Pontiac version but would have done the olds as well at that price for sure. Great condition from Grandpa is the key
My 03 bonneville has been pretty nice to me but those fwd 3.8 cars tend to get neglected. I've spent a few years ironing out monor kinks and sensor issues due to cheap AM Chinese parts. Very comfy and fuel efficient. Pretty peppy too.
My kid is learning to drive. I bought him a solid-but-banged-up ‘95 Accord: 4-door, automatic, comfy velour. Since he’s just 16 and still on a permit, I get to drive it a lot. It’s become my new favorite out of the family fleet. Almost ashamed to admit…
I can't believe how lucky you are to get that for $1,300. I love those things! And had the opportunity to buy a really nice one for my aunt for 2000. But as nice and slow and careful and gentle as she drove it. She was only averaging 13.9 mi per gallon and my wife knew that the way I drove it. How much I paid for the car would be nothing compared to how much it would cost to drive it around 3 or 4,000 mi a month!
The Jeep's flashing computer just means it lost power and needs the time set. The false errors on it are almost always caused by bad solders, so if you know someone who knows what they're doing that's an easy fix. I just ripped mine out until I get it taken care of lol. Especially cool because the 5.9s can still go off-road and tow, unlike the later SRT8 models. Fantastic vehicle that'll pass anything but a gas station.
My mom had one of these and I'd love to see a follow up video. Like all MoPar products, it's love it and hate it deal. Comfy, pleasant environment for long trips, powerful(ish), off-road capable, and decent looking. Paired with consistent electrical issues, built in money-suck repairs (the one that stands out for me was replacing the radiator because a plastic drain plug broke), super shitty assembly, bad paint (yours lived in a garage), inconsistent textile matching, and so on.
I have a 2005 Grand Cherokee Limited with the 5.7L and QDII system. I love the acceleration in it, but it dont have the great sounding exhaust as that one did in the video
Growing up in the 90s my dad was looking to downsize SUVs from his 1984 Chevy Suburban. I really wanted him to get the Jeep Grand Cherokee or the Toyota Landcruiser. He ended up getting a 1994 GMC Jimmy which we loved but the Grand Cherokee was so beautiful.
I had a 1988 Plymouth Gran Fury Police Interceptor. Best car ever. Sounded great when you'd hit the passing gear downshift...and you'd watch the fuel needle go down.
Hoping to see some videos on the Niner! I had a 1995 5.2 Limited that I ruined turning into a trail rig. Wishing now I’d just left it stock and put some 30” A/T’s on it instead. Super comfortable and powerful.
@@Welcometofacsistube Probably because everyone is amazed that the Cordoba hasn't turned into a pile of rust... My dad's last purchase as a Chrysler employee was a 1981 Dodge Aries K car - wish he had bought a LeBaron instead, it would have been so much more comfortable for family trips. The backseat of the K car sucked for three people, even though we were kids.
I loved my 5.9 ZJ ... looked just like this one. Three problems I had with it - AWD viscous coupling was going out, so it would bind in tight turns. I had to rebuild the front diff (somebody else did the same and they overtightened the central shaft nut - took some doing to take off (working outside in early season snow - not fun). Spark plugs or ignition related problem at high RPM - felt like a miss on hot days. During the winter, it made it up the ski areas in style - nice torque, but so much heavier than the WJ that followed it. Incidentally the WJ's frames were co-engineered with Porsche to make the stronger and lighter (but they didn't have the 5.9).
I love that Jeep, so cool and retro, horse power is nothing compared to torque in something like this. I look forward to seeing what you get up into this beast.
I rode in the back of a 2010 jeep grand Cherokee on a 4 hour trip to Houston. I sat in the middle seat. I was very uncomfortable and had no leg room between 2 other normal sized adults. I didn't complain because the driver was so proud of her new vehicle and I didn't want to insult her. It was such a bumpy ride, I had to take dramamine since I was struggling with motion sickness.
You know we're going to need to find out what kind of condition the Jeep turned out to be in, what you did to it, and well... everything else about it!
Granddad had the New Yorker that is a smooth ride, my coworker has the Oldsmobile for years now and refuses to get another car because he says it is too dependable and too good on gas for his hour-long commute for him to go to another car but I would have loved to have bought that jeep my dad had that engine in his ram van 2500 and it was powerful I can only imagine how it feels in that jeep with sunroof 10 speakers and leathers.... Great buy!
Contrary to a previous statement...the 5.9 Limited NEVER was available in the color purple. It was ONLY offered in three colors; Stone White, Bright Platinum (silver-ish), and Deep Slate (black). Never with pinstripes or any other graphics. Also, they only wheels they came with were the silver painted aluminum Ultra Stars. Back in 2000, my wife were looking to get a WJ with the Qudra-Drive system. When I was doing my research I stumbled upon the existence ZJ 5.9 Limited! We ended up picking up a Deep Slate 5.9 Limited. We still have it to this day...all original! Twenty-two years and 253,000 miles later, I still get enjoyment from turning the key and hearing the factory exhaust sound!
You guys teased me with the first 2 cars, the comfy Chrysler New Yorker-Fifth Avenue, and the Oldsmobile 88 Royale. I miss my 1991 Oldsmobile 98 Regency Elite, it shared a platform similar to the Lincoln Town Car of the time, had the standard V6 engine front wheel drive; depending upon the model you got you could have the LCD display and if 50th anniversary model had adjustable struts. Next time you come across an Oldsmobile 98 or 88 with great milage on it and in overall good condition you need to bring me along to see if I can get it.
Important to note that the M body Chryslers were also body on frame, the last of them for Chrysler. The unibody LH platforms (Intrepid) replaced them, but had a few year gap.
5.9 was only AWD, as far as I know. I've had all generations of GC, including the 5.9. (Mine was white as well). They were quite plush until 2005, and this 1 year model was the best of the best. (For the era)
I absolutely love these videos. I'm in the market for a second vehicle to save the miles on my truck. This gives me an idea of what I might expect at an auction. Thanks guys
I drove a '87 5th Ave for a long time in the 90's. That 318 engine was bullet proof. Had to replace the tranny once probably because I towed my boat with it.
I had one of 1800 1990 Olds 98 Touring Sedans with the supercharged 3800. On 93 octane, that beast got 34 mpg at 80 mph! It's downfall was it had been a Wisconsin car and the unibody undercarriage rusted away.
My old man had a Fifth Avenue. His was silver with grey velour seats. It rode very nicely, though it was under-powered and the 3-speed automatic robbed it of any lingering zippy-ness. $1600 for that Oldsmobile is a steal. No, it's not an enthusiast's car, but take care of it and that 3.8L V-6 will run damn near forever.
I just got a 95 riviera with the 3800 series ll I can 100% confirm it gets 30mpg on the freeway. 70k miles it needed a serpentine belt and one fuel line as it was spraying like a aerosol can
$1,300 for the 5.9! What a score, Brendan.
Also, '94 Olds 88 was my first car and I sure do miss it.
do you remember the mpg you got?
I owned my '94 88 for 7 years from 43,000 miles to 115,000 miles...and these were my mileage numbers:
17 / 18mpg - More City
20 / 21mpg - Usually the Average
26 / 27mpg - More Highway
I remember never being able to accomplish 30mpg haha but always trying.

The Fifth Ave. was brought back to the mainstream thanks to the wonderful character in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul... Mike Ehrmantraut.

This has become one of my favorite TFL series! What a deal he got on that Jeep
This is probably my favorite series on any of your channels. Great job guys! Keep 'em coming.
I love the format of your Buy or Bust videos. Keep 'em coming!
I had a 1988 Plymouth Gran Fury Police Interceptor. Best car ever. Sounded great when you'd hit the passing gear downshift...and you'd watch the fuel needle go down.
He DOES look cool as hell In that 5th ave!
Hilarious when Tommy smelled the interior of the New Yorker. His description was so good that I smelled it too!! 😂😂😂
Hoping to see some videos on the Niner! I had a 1995 5.2 Limited that I ruined turning into a trail rig. Wishing now I’d just left it stock and put some 30” A/T’s on it instead. Super comfortable and powerful.
Please do a series with the 5.9 Jeep!
That feeling when a 1989 Chrysler designed in the Malaise Era becomes a sought after collectible.
And? My 82 cordoba gets more attention than my 1 of 23 made 2014 srt 300.
@@Welcometofacsistube Queue Ricardo Montalban aka (KHAAAAAAAAN) but on "Soft, Corinthian leather" Hal 😀
@@fboomerang wrong era but ok 👍
@@Welcometofacsistube Technically, King Montalban kept doing the commercials with the "rich, smooth Corinthian leather" into the 80s
Great video! Loving this series - having a lot of fun watching them. That Jeep is fantastic and hoping to see some further videos on that one.
i think this is my fav series on the channels right now. well done once again
They really took everything that made the full-size Jeeps great and modernized it for the ZJ, then they neutered the WJ all over
That fith avenue was a great find and that jeep was a steal
Wow that Jeep is badass! Would love to see more videos of it!
I love that y’all do these videos! It’s a great concept and the eclectic mix of cars keeps it interesting!
You know we're going to need to find out what kind of condition the Jeep turned out to be in, what you did to it, and well... everything else about it!
Once rented a 92 olds 98 Regency Royale, 4 people, trunk full of luggage drove it coast to coast at between 75 & 110 mph, and we got 28 mpg
The deep slate is not black.
@@elonmust7470 Good catch! I stand corrected...Deep Slate is Not black. It is blackish.
@@stevesoto4801 It's a really nice color.
Yup the Dodge Dynasty/Chrysler Imperial had to fill the void for a few years before Intrepid/New Yorker/LHS debuted.
The 5.9/Z88Z ZJ is hands down the best, EVER.
5.9 was only AWD, as far as I know.
I've had all generations of GC, including the 5.9. (Mine was white as well). They were quite plush until 2005, and this 1 year model was the best of the best. (For the era)
Awd and Full time 4WD are different. Tired of people saying this. AWD doesnt havee 4 low or 4 part time. Fulltime 4WD does.. Get it ?
I absolutely love these videos. I'm in the market for a second vehicle to save the miles on my truck. This gives me an idea of what I might expect at an auction. Thanks guys
Love the m-body. My first car was a 1979 lebaron with Leather
The fifth Ave, and 5.9 are my favorite as I’m a mopar person
Grew up in an 86 fifth avenue and my mom had drawer liners on the seat to keep from sliding across the leather in turns.
I drove a '87 5th Ave for a long time in the 90's. That 318 engine was bullet proof. Had to replace the tranny once probably because I towed my boat with it.
Those 5.9s are the best jeep of the late 90s
All of that cheap and creaky plastic in that jeep brings me back to my childhood.
loved riding in front of great-grandad's chrysler and getting a worthers original from the bin on the transmission tunnel.
So jealous of your purchase Brendan!!!!! Very nice
That Chrysler is beautiful in my opinion. I’ve really come to love the look of those old luxury boats.
$1300 for that Cherokee was a steal. Nice grab!
Especially with inflation
I had one of 1800 1990 Olds 98 Touring Sedans with the supercharged 3800. On 93 octane, that beast got 34 mpg at 80 mph! It's downfall was it had been a Wisconsin car and the unibody undercarriage rusted away.
Congrats on the JEEP!
I owned a 1989 Bonneville with the 3800 V6. It was a great car. I definitely got 30 mpg on road trips with four or five people.
70k miles it needed a serpentine belt and one fuel line as it was spraying like a aerosol can
Saw the Fifth Avenue and immediately remembered Breaking Bad as it was Mikes car lol
Great video guys!
