    That is the HARDEST thing to sound like I am not boastful as the committee in my head is from a generation that emphasized NOT promoting yourself. I despise interviewing cuz I sound fake or hesitant about my experience or skills, and I do HATE self promotion. I can promote products, but promoting myself is really rough

    • @ratracerebellionworkfromhome

      I hear you -- I struggle with that myself and I do think it's a generational thing. It's not nice to brag, Miss Chris. Don't show off, Miss Chris. It's a struggle every time I have to "talk myself up" and I'm still pretty self-effacing in the process.
      BUT, in a resume it's a must, @savannahsmiles1797 -- put it all in there and remember, as long as you can back it up, it's all facts, not brag. :-)

      @@ratracerebellionworkfromhome Not hard on resume, and I can get an interview, I just die inside on interviews...I am FINE one on one but when it is a panel, and especially now on Zooms with only one person showing themselves it makes it HARDER, imho. I recently did a face to face interview and they had 6, and I just said sorry too overwhelming guys I don't want to waste your time. I can't focus when everyone is firing questions. I freeze. I said look y'all I am in a roomful of extroverts and I am more of introvert. I know from my Human Behavior degree, I won't do well in this culture. Thanked them and left. I did email the HR gal and said if you had said 6 people panel I wouldn't have proceeded. She said you felt ambushed right? I said exactly. The job is meeting one on one to advocate for members. Thank you so much Chris, I really appreciate that you have taken the time to break down and explain in lamen terms for the rest of us on what is going on and not only that but explain step by step how to put all of these new job seeking requirements in action. I have been a whole year now wrongly applying for roles and wondering what was going on. And yes, I have heard a million times about the ATS and tailoring my resume but that does not explain to anyone what or how to do these things and what we should have been putting in our resumes that matter and the things that don't matter. Because one of the very first things that I did was "update" my resume and after watching this module I literally should just burn my resume. As a matter of fact I am going to just start from scratch because I do not want to get anything in my new one that is unnecessary from the old one. So thank you again you are such a blessing and the work that you are doing for us matters and it helps us.

    1. Most of the jobs I have applied to say .doc or pdf. occassionally txt. So would't pdf be the best way to go?
    2. Interesting layout with the format. I have seen videos recommending either at the top or the bottom. Which way is best?
    3.Most of the resume writing programs have you pay for absolutely useless templates that do things like put your name and address on the left sometimes in a color graphic, have you put your picture up etc. Thank you for explaining that the ATS can't handle that.
    4. How do you customize the resume for EVERY job? That can take all day especially if you have several jobs you wish to apply to.
    5. The cover letter is so important. I realize it has to come close to the job description, but Ive had troble fittig my skills into what the description is. I have not had a lot of luck using AI to help write it. What can you suggest and when will that video be available. Thank you for this series.

    • @ratracerebellionworkfromhome

      1. If a company lists both DOC and PDF as options, that indicates that their particular ATS can parse both. There's some debate to whether PDFs can be parsed as accurately as .DOC and, to may way of thinking, until the jury comes back with a solid "yes," I'd stick with .DOC. .TXT is is the best choice if you are being asked to copy and paste the contents of your resume into a form field!
      2. I'm replying just before bed and my brain is mush! Can you please expand on which content you are referring to with regards to top or bottom placement? Thanks!!
      3. Agreed! ATS is making advancements and some are more capable of parsing some of those "fancy" formats than others. That said, I think it's important to make sure your resume is readable by ALL ATS - thus ensuring that no matter what the ATS technology is with a given company, it will be able to read yours and improve the odds of landing in real actual hands. :-)
      4. It can seem daunting to customize for every application but, if you are applying for the same type of position with a number of different employers, you're likely to find that many of their ads are similar.
      Build a solid base resume -- one that you can copy and make simple tweaks to for customization.
      If there are several job types you are applying for -- let's say Customer Service roles and Bookkeeping roles -- you'll want two different base resumes, one for each role type.
      Each BASE resume will showcase the skills, keywords, etc. that are most often used by employers for that type of job.
      It takes time to set up but, once you have your base resume(s) in place, customization is usually a matter of mirroring the company's keywords, preferred job title, and other small changes.
      I promise, it's time well spent! :-)
      5. Cover letter are CRITICAL! Module 9 - "Cover Letter Optional" - But Including One Gives You a BIG Edge! should be available next week. We're crossing lining up the final ducks even as I type.

    Great video! I have a few follow-up questions.
    1. How do you list job progression at a company, such as promotion?
    2. Is there any truth to not having a resume be more than one page?

    • @ratracerebellionworkfromhome
      @ratracerebellionworkfromhome  2 месяца назад +1

      Thank you!
      RESUME LENGTH: Answering the second question first, one page is great if you can do it without having to remove any important information. If you must go over, try to keep it to 2 pages max!
      Longer resumes (beyond 2 pages) are most often needed by those who must demonstrate expertise in many industry-specific areas. For example, many in the IT sector have a laundry list of codes, programs, and computer language they need to showcase. Likewise in medical field, higher education, etc.
      Those applying for mid- to upper-level management positions often have extended resumes as well.
      LISTING PROMOTIONS WITH THE SAME COMPANY IN YOUR RESUME
      For promotions within the same company, there are a couple of approaches.
      If you've had multiple promotions within the organization and have moved quickly through the ranks, consider doing a separate entry for each position. This is an excellent way to show your growth and the trust the company placed in you.
      In this scenario, you would list the same company in each entry, but with the new position title and the dates/period you worked in that capacity. Followed by the details of the position and your accomplishments in that role.
      ABC Company, location, job title dates
      bullets
      ABC Company, location, job title dates
      bullets
      ABC Company, location, job title dates
      bullets
      If you've had promotions and been in each position for an extended period of time, a "stacked" presentation might be a better fit.
      In this case, you list the company name just once, and stack your positions below that entry -- starting with the most recent at the top
      ABC Company, location, job title dates
      bullets
      Next job title dates
      bullets

    Is it acceptable to have a second page to one's resume, or does it interfere with parsing or anything else that would prohibit a resume from getting passed through the screening process, and on to the hands of prospective employers?

    • @ratracerebellionworkfromhome
      @ratracerebellionworkfromhome  9 месяцев назад +1

      A 2-page resume will not interfere with ATS parsing as long as it's properly formatted.
      While a 1-page resume is the "holy grail" there are times when a 2-pager is necessary to really showcase the applicant. For example:
      - People who have long work history - especially of there have been multiple employers.
      - People with a lot of certifications, tech skills, accomplishments, credentials etc. that require the extra space
      - People applying for senior management roles
      THAT SAID... FRONT LOAD THE MOST IMPORTANT DETAILS/INFORMATION in the first page!
      - Use that "Brag Tag" / Professional Summary section to your best advantage - plug in important keywords.
      - Leverage the Skills & Expertise section on the first page for an early display of what you bring to the table.
      AND FINALLY... If your resume runs long because you are including every job you've ever had:
      Assess the value to prospective employers. If your early career jobs don't bring added value to the company you're applying to, either:
      1. Don't list them at all, or
      2. Create a single entry that summarizes all early jobs.
      Previous Experience 1993 - 2005
      A brief entry of just a few sentences that provides an overview of your early work history (with lots of keywords).

    • @ratracerebellionworkfromhome
      @ratracerebellionworkfromhome  5 месяцев назад

      If you have a strong summary description, and the positions you're applying for are very similar, you can usually get away with using the same language. I'd look at the summary each time you're applying, weigh it objectively against the job description, and decide on a case-by-case basis!

      Hi Matt - You're so welcome!
      Now that you've watched this Module on resumes and are focusing on keywords, I encourage you to also watch our video about using ChatGPT (super easy to use and free) to extract the keywords from job descriptions for you! You can find that video here: ruclips.net/video/FmYDLcQWYmk/видео.html
      It's a good idea to sprinkle the keywords into the bullets of your resume as well as long as they aren't an awkward fit.
      Sometimes, a change might be as small as "mirroring" the employer's language. For example, if you have a resume that's geared toward Customer Service and you use the phrase "Customer Service" throughout your resume, but the employer is using the title and phrase "Customer Care," you may want to change your phrasing to match theirs.

    Thanks so much for this! I am floundering in this job search thing. Question, would it not be better to just create your resume in a .txt format and send that out when uploading your resume on the company website or submitting through sites like Indeed or Linkedin since it is "bot friendly"?

    • @ratracerebellionworkfromhome
      @ratracerebellionworkfromhome  6 месяцев назад

      Hi @jennjuice1979! You could absolutely do that when you're asked to paste the contents of your resume into a form field.
      If you're asked to upload your resume as a file, you may want to use a well-formatted, easy-to-parse resume as the bots will be able to "read" it and it will be appealing to humans, too! :-)
      As ATS service providers are updating their software, most can now parse a more formatted resume as long as it's well laid out. The downloadable sample resume in the Module 8 resources (ratracerebellion.com/work-from-home-resume-beat-the-bots/) is a good example of an easy-to-parse, formatted resume.
      I hope that helps!

      Excellent questions! A gap in your resume shouldn't hinder your chances of landing a job as long as your skills are fresh and you can bring value to the company in the role you're applying for.
      We actually have a good post on how to handle "illness gaps" in your resume right here: ratracerebellion.com/your-work-from-home-resume-explaining-illness-gaps-2-2/
      Regarding volunteer work, you should absolutely include it in your resume -- especially if it helped you learn new skills and/or hone the ones you already had. In addition to that though, volunteer work shows prospective employers you are community-minded, a team player, empathetic, etc.

    Hello! I just wanted to say thank you for the help for this module. I just wanted to ask though especially when it comes to matching the 'brag title'. I am currently doing a transition from a career in education into hopefully something remote (e.g customer service). Even if my titles did not match (Language Instructor for example) would it be okay to put something like 'Customer Service Professional' as your brag point?
    My previous positions had me doing work similar to that brag point, but my official title is completely different due to the different country and work culture.

    • @ratracerebellionworkfromhome
      @ratracerebellionworkfromhome  5 месяцев назад

      Great question!
      While not every worker has a Customer Service job title, almost every position that requires interaction with others involves some degree of customer service. In education, your "customers" might be students, parents, the Board of Education, or any person or organization that relies on you for positive outcomes.
      In short, yes, you can create a "Customer Service Professional" brag tag/professional summary for your resume.
      Start by breaking down what you did in the what you did in the education sector and make a list of the skills you used that transfer into the customer service arena -- organization, communication, problem-solving, etc. -- and weave it into your statement.
      Your statement doesn't have to claim that you worked directly in a position bearing a Customer Service title, it needs to dazzle them with the customer service abilities you have and that they need!
