Modding is an art form. No blaster is perfect out of the box. What people don't understand is modding is mostly responsible for the off the shelf blaster performance today. Nerfsmithing is alive and well. Your blaster is an extension of you and there's nothing like running your own creation.

I’ve always loved the feeling of a blaster achieving something that it might not have been made for. I’ve taken blaster I thought were broken, and made them fully functional again with some time and effort. And saying just to by a pro blaster instead of modding? Guess what, they can also be modded too! It’s just another level you have to try/work on.

I actually thrifted a Rex Rampage recently with the specific intention of modding it once i have the time, because I think it looks stupid in the best way. It'll then join my collection of off-the-shelf and 3d printed "pro" blasters.
Sometimes I wanna mod, sometimes I wanna print, and sometimes I just want to use stuff as is. All are good options and we would be poorer as a hobby if any of them went away.

When I mention that you can buy something that already does the task, it’s usually because some people legitimately don’t know that you can but that off store shelves or online. I agree modding isn’t dead, it won’t be dead for a long time if ever in the community but I just like to let people know you can avoid modding if you want.

    • @WannabeNerfOperator

And I agree modding isn't dead in the slightest. It depends solely on the person and what they would perfer. I modified the Fortnite Flare to shoot Rival rounds... sure the Pilot, Fate, and Knockout all do the same exact thing (maybe even better than my mod) but I now have the satisfaction of having a blaster I made better myself, and it's special.

imho i feel that modding wasn't as prevalent as it used to be like 10-15 years ago with pro blasters coming into existence, eg nexus pro and 3d printed blasters
modded blasters can be good but most people dont see the point in the labour involved in modding a blaster
want a short dart stampede? just buy a bk1/2s
want a generic springer? just get a nexus pro
the main beauty of modding is the customisation it allows you to do, with so many different shops selling different mod kits
im in the process of modding an alpha trooper rn, the cs18 variant since i really love its colour scheme, its just really fulfilling seeing my build come together slowly and even though i probably wouldnt use it over my velcro, its still a really nice blaster to have

I think the sentiment of performance mods is in the hole now, but I think it's still a valuable part of the community. People still do cosmetic mods, combinations, underbarrel, and even just standard mods. I think the idea of modding being like cooking is really good at explaining it. Also, modding is sometimes a lot cheaper then most high end blasters.

wish I myself had the means to make my own nerf blaster with the ideas I have.Whenever I'm at a nerf event it's not the best nerf blaster people want try out it's the custom one's people have made that do something a bit different.if you look at all the pro performance blasters nowadays they all follow a similar form factor so when someone makes there own that does something different it brings everyone the childlike joy they had when seeing a new nerf blaster on store shelves when they were younger

Due to things like fps caps, high performance stock blasters, etc. modding certainly feels like it’s dying out, especially as someone who joined the NIC at a time where being a hobbyist basically required you to be a modder and virtually everyone ran modified/homemade blasters. I’ll never understand why some people seek to actually discourage others from modding though, even if it’s not necessary for where/how you play the process of modding itself can be highly rewarding and it’s always cool to see what other people come up with.

i mainly mod because no blaster is “perfect.” wonky grips, weird quirks, odd proportions. i like taking something “pretty good” and making it perfect for me. and that’ll usually take mods! because what’s perfect for me probably isn’t what’s perfect for dart zone.

I like modding because it brings back Something i miss on the main brainds: goofyness
Its cool that we have 150+ fps blaster on storeshelfs? Yea.. but they kind of all work the same
Meanwhile with modders (specially 3D printed boasters) we can have entirery new mechanisms or just silly things that a main brand would not do, we can have a double barrel shell ejecting beast, we can have a literal musket, we can have a *mega dart sniper rifle with a granade launcher on top* , it get goofy and pratical and goofyness is what i love about this hobby

My larp runs a cap of 120 fps because we don't require eye pro. Modding for me is *essential* because pro blaster hit way to high and most stock blasters hit way too low so you absolutely need to mod to tune up or down a blaster to get into a useful game-legal range.

Dude my nerf knockout with an automatic opening breach and sized down to half darts firing at 150 fps is one of my favorite small blasters. It's a pocket sniper that doesn't take a ton of force to prime (though I do also love my printed 31K-L). Same with the Hecate which uses the big shock as a base. I do think it's a little silly to try and make stock nerf guns "competitive" but its certainly nice to have as an option. At the very least ripping out those damn flow restrictors and replacing the barrels + some rifling 🤣

My entire deal has basically become spite as an old school fan in the hobby from when modding WAS the only way. You have a 230fps aeb? I'll still kick your butt with this pump action Longstrike that hits 150 and has accuracy as a suggestion. I'm also sick of so many blasters just getting overlooked because it's "outdated". Like no, that's just dormant potential. The most fun is making people do a double take as they realize what kind of abominations you have brought into the world... and also proving nah sayers wrong... as I said, spite... 😅🤣

  • @jmgerraughty

I only came into the hobby this past April, so my perspective might not have as much experience behind it as it should. It seems to me that the different “factions” RE: modding VS store-bought VS printing (those seem to be the three main camps) feel in conflict with one another due to the rate at which the hobby is growing and evolving right now. From what I can tell, modding used to be the only way to achieve high performance, but with printing becoming more and more accessible to the masses and now companies like DZ and Siren giving us 200 fps just a Target run away, there are way more options available to folks who want an “in” to our hobby, and modding seems the most antiquated to the vast majority who only ever were in it as a means to an end. On the other end of things, I’ve seen people complain that soon every serious Nerfer will need a 3d printer to keep up with the hobby. And, as someone who is struggling to learn AutoDesk right now, shell cutting is a *waaaayyy* more enjoyable way to remix someone else’s design if you ask me!

It's true, modding is amazing and still relevant, but I understand why the "Just get a Nexus Pro" crowd exists, as Captain Xavier explained, at the beginning modding was the only way to get high performance blasters, there was no Nexus Pro to default to. Now that pro level blasters are available at store shelves, modding is not essential for getting high fps, but modding is broader than that, so people still do it, wether is to have a fun project or to tweak things in a blaster to make it more to your liking.

I’m new to the hobby and my first mod, if you can call it that, was a paint job on my DZ Max Stryker. Going to my first few community events I received an overwhelming amount of praise and encouragement for my painting efforts however I was grilled and received some “shade” because the internals were still stock.
A few people were disappointed and acted snobbish because they were running expensive / modded high performance Blasters and I was constantly taking them out with something off of the shelf - the audacity 😸
Overall my experiences in the hobby have been amazing so I will encourage everyone receiving divisive, negative energy from the haters to do their best to keep themselves in the company of people with higher vibration 🤙🏽

Modding is entirely responsible for my career choice. It is the reason why I love to tinker, take things apart and fix them, and educate myself on how things work. Modding is the reason why I am who I am. Making something powerful when it originally wasnt is truly a special experience. Thats a reason why I prefer Nerf to Airsoft. Because Airsoft will always be better and shoot harder out of the hox. But thats it. Thats all the excitement there is. There is no unique feeling too it. There is no creativeness to it. Its perfect out of the box, and thats the problem. Its too easy. Now some people might like that, and thats perfectly fine. But this is where I think the Nerf hobby really shines compared to Airsoft and Paintball and other hobbies like that. This hobby is grossly underpopular and overly judged. Its not just adults and older teens playing with kids toys. Its a thriving community, where we push the boundaries of what is really a "toy". Taking something and making it your own makes it way more rare and valuable than a Red Longshot or a Purple Max Force Manta Ray ever could be. Because that design and effort that you put into it is unique to you and you only. Its special because you made it, customized it, and put effort and time into it. Machines cant do that. When you create a blaster that has all these cool parts and has a nice paintjob, its really something special. Because it is the only one to exist and will be the only one to ever exist. Because its yours, and only yours.
