This whole external power supply thing - isn't that sort of like what NAIM's audio philosophy is all about? Unless I am very much mistaken, NAIM's claim is that external power supplies drop the noise floor. Is that what's going on here as well?
I have found this video extremely helpful because I own and use the i9XR amplifier, which I bought one year ago. The price point was just right for me, and I demoed the more expensive Naim Nait super 3, and didn't like it. And although I was upgrading from a Rega Elicit R amp, I didn't go for their Aethos amp because I wanted an included phono stage. So, the i9XR ticks the boxes and sounds good. I agree with what you say of the amp characteristics, and regardless of the quality of the DAC, I don't use it because I don't go for the CD transport/DAC idea. But I digress. Having recently purchased the Luxman D-03X CD player, I am most keen to find out about the amp upgrade path for my i9XR, using the PSU XR power supply. And I am more encouraged to check it out, when funds permit. From what you say, it might just be the last piece of hi-fi I'll need to really get the best out of my system.

I'm a fan of half width hifi, love my Heed stuff. I think there's a perception by a lot of people that bigger is better, that half size means half performance, and you're not getting your moneys worth. I value the short signal paths, modular upgrade options and investment in the internal component quality than oversized expensive metal casework and box ticking functionality I’ll never need

One aspect that I don't understand is this. The PSU-XR is actually heavier than the I9-XR amplifier. Also, when looking inside the extra weight is because the power supply is actually larger than the amplifier uses. However, the PSU-XR power supply is only there to power the preamp, DAC, and phono stage of I9-XR. Wouldn't it have made more sense to have the power supply in the I9-XR amplifier power just its preamp, DAC and phono stage. Then use a separate Cyrus power amplifier with it? I wonder what Cyrus's thinking is behind this?
Curious product. I saw the Cyrus stack at the 2022 Munich High End show, and the looks are attractive for me. One thing I struggle to grasp: Seems the small form factor constricts possibilities quite a lot. I mean -- going for the hassle and putting a second toroidal transformer into a second casing, then strapping it via some sophisticated CPU controlled connection into the main case seems like an overly complicated solution. I fully understand that better power supply usually means better sound, not only with amps, but DACs, transports, whatever... so the general idea is understood. BUT what puzzles me is - why not go full size right away, so to speak? Just put a large enough, beefy power supply into one box, let it provide all the juice needed.
Interesting comment, just for some context the highest end DAC I know of is the Wadax Reference its around £100,00 I think and its huge. They sell an external power supply for better sound still so its not exclusive to the compact size or this design I think there can be merit in it for other reasons.
For history and information: Twenty years of satisfaction with Cirus amplifiers ''8'' as monoblocks and preamplifier and all with PSU-XR! It is an older generation, but the grip on any speakers and the sound is excellent. And for phonostage use MC high output, result is much, much better. Cheers!
Very interesting , although i would expecting something else , and very obvious to me: the amplifier to be without any power circuits inside...,with all the benefits that this means, and...yes, the external power supply !
Very interesting video. I had a Cyrus system in the past consisting of preamp/ two power amps {bi-amped} and a CD player. I then added a PXS-R to each of these units and found the improvement only marginal for the cost outlay.Admittedly this was an older Cyrus system and I would imagine the new models are better all round. One thing to consider is all the extra cables you end up having. Keep up the great reviews your posts are detailed , informative and enjoyable.
I agree. I had a Cyrus set up years ago. The improvements with adding the PSX-R's wasn't huge and the faffing around with extra cables. By the end you'd end up with a costly system. The build quality of Cyrus products is mediocre. The rubber feets were just stuck on and kept falling off. You could get some really nice high end gear with the build quality to match. I wouldn't go back to Cyrus.
Great review. Have you tried to get a Sugden amplifier on test? A21/21SE class A or the more muscular ANV50 or the big IA4 Class A. I think the IA4 is probably a bit more expensive than the Cyrus pairing. None have dacs etc, just great Yorkshire amplification. Would be great to hear your thoughts on Sugden.
Don't really know why someone would buy an integrated amp then a power supply for it, also agree no balanced connections and no AES/EBU would be a nonstarter for me, thanks! Great vid as usual.
I feel like Cyrus has always been a bit of a rip off. If you buy just the amp and turn it up there is a real chance it will overload and cut out. I had a Cyrus 7 and it did this often. Added the PSU and no problem. It felt to me like they were selling you half the amp and then waiting till you became aware that you needed the other half to make it work properly, which it did, very well.
Thank you Terry for another incredibly insightful and entertaining video. The standard you set, others should emulate so you're always my first port of call when I have a comment or question. I've just bought a pair of Mission 770's. That was the easy part. I thought about getting the NAD M10 V2 for starters then possibly adding a C298 or M23 (as you showed in one of your videos). I like my music loud by the way. My other path is getting an EverSolo DMP6 Masters Edition then adding amps, possibly 2 of the Cyrus X Power. I'm not sure if the X Power signature is similar to the Cyrus amp reviewed but do you think the Cyrus would be a better match for the Missions or the NAD route?
My old two 1997 monoblock AVI S2000MI integrated amplifiers are totally silent with no hiss, so an extra outboard power supply is just not needed if the amplifiers are designed and made to be silent in the first place 🤣 . Also my old AVI's are ultra detailed, ultra transparent, and totally colourless with speed timing and dynamics, with all the inner small details and harmonics laid totally bare, but they do all this without an ounce of sibilance whatsoever . BLOODY HELL £5000 for the CYRUS combo. For £5000 you can buy the ATC SCM19A or ATC SCM20ASL 🤣 . Although my TWO AVI S2000MI were £2000 for the pair back then, and they were designed as very high quality studio amplification with 0.003% distortion below 96db, and were made to pair with extremely revealing two way monitors . Every CYRUS amplifier so far has no been able to match my old AVI S2000MI's for detail, clarity, dynamics, with a very open neutral sound . Truth be told they are more neutral detailed and revealing than the ATC SIA150, even though the ATC has more ultimate power ability, but that is because ATC SIA150 seems to cut off the bottom end of the frequency range, and also it doesn't sound as neutral, or as colourless, while also sounding harsher, and ultimately more muddy . The reason i know this is because i bought a brand new a few years back from audio emotion, and then that was around £2700 or £2800 pounds. I was very disappointed with the sound of the ATC SIA150, because it was in no way a match on sound quality grounds as my two AVI S2000MI amplifiers sound quality . I reckoned the ATC integrated amps lots of complex array of class A Preamp and output circuitry components along with the poor design of the volume control and position of it, contributed a lot to do with the brittle, harsh, and thin and more coloured sound. Also it's speaker output terminals are of poor quality. The AVI's are more of the straight wire with with gain than the SIA150 . Anyway i just thought i would share this with you 🤣 . Also about using adapter bfa adapter plugs, they are not the best idea if you want to let through ultimate clarity, detail, smoothness, with less hash coming from your signal source, because they ultimately degrade the signal source . If you are sticking with a passive audio system, personally i would skip CYRUS and go straight to GATO PWR 222 MONOBLOCKS, which are the best of the best in what they do, as one single high powered output device per each half of the signal, having ultimate detail clarity transparency as reguards buying a new amplifier. Yes they are more money than the cyrus by £3000, but they are more than worth the extra £3000 over than cyrus .

If you look at my playlists for amplifiers you will see some that have stood out to me with the 770.
This type of product seems to be designed to keep the end user buying more and more boxes to get a better end result, why dont Cyrus just make a full width chasis and build the best solution for their products rather than building a half solution that requires an upgrade as soon as you buy it??...
I think it’s important to remember price points and affordability. Not everyone can afford 5 thousand in one go but maybe over a period of time they can afford the items separately and they get a better version of the sound they already really love. Form factor it’s Cyrus thing it’s been the same since the day they started and I wonder if the average UK home living room dictated it as smaller is easier to accommodate much harder to make sound good
Is the PSU XR about more than just a really low noise floor? For example, what if the system is already downstream from something like an Audioquest Niagra?
Great question, I was using high end IsoTek mains conditioning for this review and still heard the differences I did so I think it’s about more than just that.
@PursuitPerfectSystem Yes, beyond my understanding, but assuming the 'muscle' of the larger transformer and how the power gets delivered must be key, particularly on the analogue output stage.
I've always considered Cyrus among those brands that got a specific kind of audience and clients .... like for example what Saab was for cars years ago ... surely audiophiles but with certain acceptance for the typical features of those products ... they love it and perhaps they will never leave the Brand. This doesn't mean that Cyrus are not great and well sounding products, but that they are quite peculiar for a certain kind of enthusiasts. Great review as usual Terry, I guess this one has not been easy to complete.
When I was auditioning amps about 5 years ago I had listened to maybe 10 different amps in the price range of about 5k at a few different audio specialist stores. Not impressed with any of them, not impressed at all. Then the guy pointed out the half size Cyrus gear and said “you probably aren’t interested in this half size Cyrus gear”, I said sure I’ll have a listen. Within 30 seconds I recognised it as the sound I had been looking for. So no I don’t think it’s necessarily a specific kind of audience, it simply sounded as I wanted my music to sound, and it was packed full of functionality. Win Win.
When I was comparing amp, I never expected to pick the Cyrus, but it was right for me, for a number of unique reasons (needed a phono stage being one reason). Other than considering partnering it with the power supply, I won't be buying their CD player. I like to have different brands per component and find synergy that way.
I think that's a mistake just having the power supply unit powering just one unit not good enough, there's no reason why it couldn't power two units wouldn't really cost any more in manufacturing. I'd be annoyed as a customer if I had two units like a preamp power amp and had to buy two power supplies unnecessary Way too expensive 1500 for both units. Are you going to get the Peachtree GaN400 get one in yeah! And that's 3,000

I don't own anything made by Cyrus but I had the opportunity to listen to their products in the past. Hifi enthusiasts buy their products by the sound and quality, not by their looks.
I disagree, Every unit I see seems to have both a SPDIF and BNC. I have yet to date run into a BNC input source, but then my audio experience is only limited to forty years. Even my new Auralic Aires G1.1 has no BNC On the other hand, Two SPDIF inputs allow the connection of say, a Node and a CD player for example, without resorting to optical cables. My other opinion is that optical does not perform as well as SPDIF, or I2S. Actually, an I2S might be welcome vs one of the optical inputs. I'm sure all the BNC burdened readers will disagree. Please let me know what input devices you have found that exclusively require BNC and do not also have alternate SPDIF.
BNC is just a different form of termination for an SPDIF digital cable. If you look up there are no RCA connectors that are true 75ohm where as bnc connection is. So bnc is preferential to use and Chord electronics use BNC. You can still use the cable you just have to use an adaptor so having one of each - one RCA and one BNC means someone might not have to use an adaptor or maybe only one, hence why it makes sense on all levels
@@PursuitPerfectSystem Chord is the only one that I now know of vs plenty of RCA inputs I've experienced Base on popularity, I'd say it made more sense to include two RCA inputs and use a RCA to BNC adapter if you have a Chord. Bit of a tail wagging the dog issue for me. That said, I can hear adapters in the system and avoid them. Oh well, no one likes my opinions like I do.

@@PursuitPerfectSystem I was referring to the need for using an adapter to convert a BNC input on my DAC to RCA so I could hook up the RCA output from an Audiolab CDT transport and a Bluesound Node via RCA cables. If people love their BNC fine, just include and extra RCA input for those who don't want to use an adapter or purchase a specialty RCA/BNC Cable.

Cost. This presents a way for the consumer to buy the amp and upgrade when funds allow.

Coax, BNC, Toslink optical and AES/EBU are all SPDIF protocol connections.

It’s not not just an integrated it’s a dac and phono stage too and the pre amp is crucial for sound quality so the power supply noise is crucial

My other opinion is that optical does not perform as well as SPDIF, or I2S. Actually, an I2S might be welcome vs one of the optical inputs. I'm sure all the BNC burdened readers will disagree. Please let me know what input devices you have found that exclusively require BNC and do not also have alternate SPDIF.
BNC is just a different form of termination for an SPDIF digital cable. If you look up there are no RCA connectors that are true 75ohm where as bnc connection is. So bnc is preferential to use and Chord electronics use BNC.
You can still use the cable you just have to use an adaptor so having one of each - one RCA and one BNC means someone might not have to use an adaptor or maybe only one, hence why it makes sense on all levels
@@PursuitPerfectSystem Chord is the only one that I now know of vs plenty of RCA inputs I've experienced Base on popularity, I'd say it made more sense to include two RCA inputs and use a RCA to BNC adapter if you have a Chord. Bit of a tail wagging the dog issue for me. That said, I can hear adapters in the system and avoid them. Oh well, no one likes my opinions like I do.
@@fletchermunson6225 if you haven’t used a bnc digital cable how do you know if you can hear an adaptor on one. Sometimes opening one’s mind is a good idea
@@PursuitPerfectSystem I was referring to the need for using an adapter to convert a BNC input on my DAC to RCA so I could hook up the RCA output from an Audiolab CDT transport and a Bluesound Node via RCA cables. If people love their BNC fine, just include and extra RCA input for those who don't want to use an adapter or purchase a specialty RCA/BNC Cable.
