A couple of notes based on some of the comments:
1. It’s not a serial port, it’s a proprietary port and cable….meh whatever, I still enjoyed reminiscing about printers in the 90s!
2. You may think Audiophile power cables are snake oil - and that’s fine. Everyone is allowed their own opinion - and no, I won’t be reviewing any cables because the ASR community will BBQ me on gas mark 6, and I’d rather avoid that!
As someone born in the 80's, I love listening to CD's. Recently bought a Meridian G07 CD player used for $350 USD (retail was $2875 USD in 2004) and it still sounds good. For comparison, I have a fairly nice Denafrips Ares II DAC that I use for streaming and the Meridian plays in the same league. Also I've recently built a collection of CD's from people looking to get rid of their entire CD libraries for cheap on FB marketplace. I have been able to score almost 500 CD's for about $75.
Very nice score with the CDs 👌
I'm a relative newcomer to your channel so I had missed the news of you becoming a father. Belated congratulations! Two of my good friends became fathers in their forties. I believe it actually kept them younger despite the challenges.
Thank you! 😃 👶 🎶
Congrats on becoming a father! I listen to both cds and records. My nephews give me no end of grief for not getting with the program- sourcing my music from my phone or a streamer, worrying that i may become too weak to lift a record onto my turntable or find a cd because its too small. I did finally get a DAC, for which i got their approval.
Haha that made me chuckle! 😃
Never mind the kids.
They don’t know what they’re missing. Old school is the righteous path to audiophile Nirvana.
@jonathann8309 yep. According to my nephews 50 miles of elbow room in heaven! But I have to say I'm old school too
Love your honesty, the best audio reviewer on youtube , keep up the great work
Thanks for the great review. I love my Cyrus CD-i from their classic range. I originally used the RCA outs but now now use the digital outs into a Cyrus 82 DAC (optical for acoustic music and jazz) and coaxial for electronic or rock/metal) and have been very happy since. Still need to upgrade the power supply though
I'm a CD addicted listener...i call it: listening with passion and not jumping all 3min through a different streaming playlist. Own Cyrus with PSU, as well Pioneer PD-93 and Sony XS505... Vintage DAC chips are lovely..as long you are not one of this analytic listeners, needing FPGAs 😮Thanks
I love CD's, thank you for this video!
Been waiting a LONG time for a proper review of the new gen cyrus.... Great vid as ever!
Thank you 👍
Just getting back into cd and loveing it do it guys and girls ❤
I got an Auralic Streamer a G1.1 and it has a nice feature. You can attach a cd or DVD drive to it with a USB cable and it functions as a capable CD player. It would be nice of more amps and preamps included the electrical architecture so you could simply use a CD drive to play your CDs. The streamer and good drive like an Asus or LG DVD drive with a decent USB cable like an Audio quest Carbon is about $3500.
Maybe a nice one to try as well is the nagra cd player. Very good looks, very high performance. at least thats what i ve heard people say. Havent yet had the chance to listen to one.
after market power cords do not carry audio signals and cannot introduce non-linear distotion unless damaged. Not a single manufacturer has published measurements in audio journals to verify claimed audible improvements.
….some people hear differences, some people don’t. I believe it’s important that different opinions are allowed to exist, assuming those opinions don’t hurt anyone. Speaking your truth is fine, as long as you don’t berate and chastise those who don’t believe the same as you, even when you feel it’s irrefutable audio science. I’m not saying that’s what your comment is doing btw - this is just me expressing my wish for us all to live in a nice friendly audiophile community.
Cyrus is coming out with a BluOS powered streamer. I am hoping you and others will be reporting on it when it is out.
Have recently got back into cd’s, I recently purchased a Primare DD35 CD transport which I am very happy with. Prefer the sound quality through my holo spring 3 dac as opposed to streaming via i2s connection. Sounds to me more natural and airy. Long live the cd / cd player.
Primare make quality products! - Long live the CD! 💿 👍 🎶
I share your thoughts on streaming in the intro. I used to be a film buff with all my dvds. Streaming has obliterated how i approach "putting on a film".
I'm now very cautious about atreaming music. Maybe its my brain and how it deals with choice or something!?
Anyway, looking forward to the actual review...
Great review. Really interesting that its only the £4k+ version that really blows your socks off...
Looking forward to the other CD player reviews. Any chance you'll get the new Exposure 3510 full width CD player? (Not their XM one)
Hope so as I like exposure stuff! 👍
@@SmallRoomAudio yeah and it's been at audio shows but there's no real official news on it? Anyway, I'm glad you're looking CD players. The new Hegel one looks pretty special too and might be roughly the same price as the pair of Cyrus XR boxes.
Cheers for the videos. Really enjoyable. 👍
Thank you for the review.
Wondering if you’re curious about the new Schiit Urd…
Yes but I’d have to buy one, I’m not a big enough channel for them to send me a review sample, so probably won’t happen unfortunately
Nice review. I still love buying and listening cd's using my Hegel Mohican player. It still beats my Roon (via Qobuz) streaming device from Silent Angel (Rhein Z1 V2 with Roon core). Although the gap of sound quality is getting very thin sometimes with some recordings. But nothing beats buying physical media, getting through the inside booklets and text and enjoying the whole album. Btw, that Luxman-player you're mentioning is amazing (with SACD-functionality)! Greetings from The Netherlands.
Absolutely agree, physical media is brilliant 🤩 👍 💿
Unclear why there was 8:15 of waffle before mentioning how the unit sounds. To anyone stumbling across this video - if you want to know what it feels like to want to saw your own head off by all means watch the first 8 minutes.
Hi , new to the channel, how big is you small listening room? Mine is small, 10 x 13 ft. Well treated. I have a pair of GR Research NX Studios and PS Audio gear. Low volume listening is great, really can’t go above 82 db volume or everything tends to get jumbled together and you lose soundstage . When the Queen of the house gives only one option you have to deal with room constraints. Thanks for you honest content!
Cyrus cdi-XR vs atoll CD200?
That's not a "serial port" it's a proprietary connector. Serial ports were generally 9 pin.
Ok fair enough - let me correct myself - ‘It looks similar to a serial port, at least to the untrained eye of a non-serial port expert’. Better?
@@SmallRoomAudio ach, I didn't mean to come off as "that guy".
@@MKPatrick it’s ok, you aren’t THAT guy! You shall be known from here on in as the ‘port guy’ 😜
15 grand for a cd player that’s crazy…
Oohhh yes, but damn if it doesn’t sound good!
@@SmallRoomAudio I love hifi equipment but at 15k for a box that plays CD’s i just can’t see how something is valued so high and at that price it feels absurd to me.
Each to their own but it seems a bit like ‘ an emperor’s new clothes situation to me ‘ 😀
Oh I agree, audio products are generally absurd, but also great fun - it’s just playing music right, but if someone has the means (I don’t btw) then why not enjoy the expensive stuff too! Although there’s almost always positive bias when someone buys something new, I can’t fault the Luxman for sounding superb - not sure the dac inside bests a Mola Tambaqui, but it’s a different kind of presentation. Anyway, if I’ve peaked your interest, stay tuned for the full review when it comes!
@@SmallRoomAudioit definitely has got my interest in a curious way and your right if someone has enough money to be able afford afford such expensive things then why not( I’m probably just jealous! 😂 )
Anyway I’m not knocking your channel I always really enjoy watching your videos and will look forward to seeing your review when it’s available 👍
Are you planning on a review covering the Fancy Pants line of cables?
Nope, cable reviews are like a red rag to a bull
@@SmallRoomAudio 😆. And congratulations on becoming a new Dad!
Thank you 👍 😃
I wouldn't buy the Cyrus player knowing that I would have to pay a similar amount of money for the power supply to get an improvement in sound quality. I favour the CD Transport and separate Dac route. I am using a Emotiva CD3 as transport at present. I also have an Audio Analogue AA Drive CD Transport which is much more expensive! The Emotiva beats it both from a sound quality and an operational angle.
they make a cheaper transport for 1k.
I thought the class D power amp review was coming?
Yup that’s on the to do list - just waiting for a passive preamp to give it a different front end test
Enjoyed the video and looking forward to the follow ups. Just a small note of caution, I enjoy the channel following you on your own personal HiFi journey, so I’m hoping you don’t become beholden to review kit sent to you by the manufacturers. That path can easily lead to a loss of credibility and distinctiveness.
Absolutely agree - hence why you don’t see a lot of cheapo chi-fi on my channel as it all looks very repetitive and boring to me. Generally I either approach the manufacturers of equipment I like and want to try out, or I buy it and review it.
$2300 ….slotted?…no tray…😮
No tray, no play? 💿 🎶 😮
@@SmallRoomAudioFor me, yes.
@SmallRoomAudio
I have a Marantz SACD 30n…very pleased with it. (and it's tray! 🥰).
That's alot of money for just a power supply.
Slot loader, not my cup of T...... Top loader like recorder player or tray loader is preferable personally
Had the Cyrus CD8SE Mk2...Sound Quality 10..Reliability 2...Sold it !
"Excellent value". Ridiculous.
Value is in the eye of the mad audiophile beholder 😀
