    OMG, this video came up just as I was having the same issues with my 14 month old GSD that I got from a rescue 2.5 weeks ago. No impulse control. No idea of boundaries. Stubborn as you know what. We put a prong collar on her to help her walk better. She won’t come when called. Everything is a game to her. She know commands but will do them in her own time. Tell her down and point and wait about 5-10 secs and don’t move, then she will lie down. I’ve had 6 GSDs in my lifetime. Never have I had one like this. Plus she is not confident!!! Thanks for this video

    I have an update! My prong collar came in and I took him out on a walk. It works wonders. The first walk he did freak out a bit because of it being new but by our second walk he listened. He didn’t tug. He didn’t have me pulling. He did need redirections but from before the collar to now? I’m so amazed!

    I have a 5 month old 3/4 Shepherd 1/4 boxer, he’s absolutely great on walks especially off leash, but there are days on leash where he jolts towards dogs or people (very friendly manner) to try play / interact with them he stops when I move like 5-10ft away from them, but I think in future if he keeps at it I may have to try the prong as already at 5 months he’s quite the strong wee fellow thanks for the video great as always.

I wonder if you have any tips for my GSD who is doing well heeling with the prong, however if I hand off the leash to my daughter and try to walk away, or anyone in my family is walking far ahead or behind him, he screams his face off. If we stay together he's fine. If I myself distract him and lead him away he is fine. I'm trying to train my daughter to walk him. He's 2 years old and he seems to have separation anxiety. All4JesusChrist Great Scott!!! Do you have my dog??? I just wrote the exact same thing!!! What is it with these 1year old female GSDs? Will eat treats as long as you give them. And will destroy a tennis ball. Is yours short on confidence as well.

    • @livingadamman7994
      @livingadamman7994 4 года назад

      @@kylasbibi wow, so it's not only me, but it's good to know. I guess it's a test for us to help them overcome their fear and at the same time I suppose we need to deal with our own confidence and emotions as dog owners. Perhaps we sometimes expect too much from our pets but not of ourselves?, at least that's what I'm learning. I'm determined to get the behavior of her sorted, and she has come a long way, the problem really lies in the breeding I believe as all traits are, a dog can not be trained to express a trait it does not have genetically only traits can be suppressed and controlled through training. To be fair we need to give them ample respect and praise for their many amazing traits and do our best to deal with the ones that are not appropriate as companion/working dogs or whatever the purpose for the dog. And deal with the less desirable behavior with consistent training and love. Mine has taken to the stick like crazy and now she keeps putting her stick exactly where she knows i walk and it's starting to drive me crazy when I'm busy with other things, when I'm not busy it's great fun and good exercise for her and she's shows she has excellent scent instincts with fetching the stick hidden in bush and tall grass. Also you can use the stick as a reward after leash training, or before you throw stick you can ask commands as they are so anxious for you to throw it it will get them to perform. a downside is that she gets locked focus on the stick, so some days I hide it. Good luck with yours

    • @kylasbibi
      @kylasbibi 4 года назад +1

      All4JesusChrist It’s good not to feel alone. I think you are right on so many levels. I am really going to have to just breathe a little more. I’m afraid she is the result of poor breeding plus she was just too much for the people who had her. She is 71.6lbs, very strong and stubborn as the day is long. I also think part of the problem may be I wasn’t ready to bring another dog into our home. Our 12.5 yr old GSD crossed the rainbow bridge in August. It had been so eerily quiet here without her. I went to a rescue instead of a breeder. When we got Bella home, it was Katie bar the door. We have managed to calm her dow some using a tether so she can’t just wander. We switched her to a better food. We had her evaluated for training and she starts the intermediate class in a couple of weeks. It’s that stubbornness that drives me insane. She know her commands but will take her own sweet time doing them. But she is worth trying to train so here I am!

    • @livingadamman7994
      @livingadamman7994 4 года назад +2

      @@kylasbibi Excellent story, I'm no expert but I believe you will meet your goals with her as I will and am slowly. I just spoke to the breeder since your message and he says she is testing me a bit but she's 1 yr and he says all that will balance out, he's very happy at how she is coming along he said I'm doing a great job, thing is I know I can do better so when you look at it like that she is also training me :) amazing dogs aren't they, so quick and wise, strong and yep dominant ! Hey this may not be your cup of tea but I pray to Jesus to help my dog understand me and to make her good, and I believe it has made a huge difference. God Bless

      Many years ago, I was training military police dogs. There was a particular dog that's once off the lead would only recall when he wanted to, I came up with an idea. We got hold of an old heavy frying pan, put string through the handle to form a loop. We then positioned it next to the range of kennels and set it up like a mouse trap. We would do some basic commands then Break. This dog Always went round the exercise area anti click wise and passed right by the frying pan. Immediately the dog got level with the pan the handler called the dogs name and Come. Immediately the dog did not obey the long line of cord was pulled and the pan really clattered against the steel fence, as the pan hit the fence another quick come was demanded and it completely solved the recall problem. He would recall on a long line but not when off a lead or collar. This was many years befor the state of the art electric collars. He was a 140 lbs huge GSD, VERY TALL AND LONG with a long coat, think he was half grizzley bear. Lol

So he is fine when there is a lot of people around but he just doesn't like when they try to pet him or try to touch him. He will jump and freak out (not in an aggressive way but he will run away). 2 questions:
    I’ve used both the classic Sprenger prong collar and more recently a plastic prong collar; are either of them acceptable and do the same thing or is one better than the other?
    When you’re starting out teaching heel, do you have him heel all the time even just going out to the bathroom and so on? Like constant training or am I supposed to “give him a break” but then he’ll just be pulling. I always hear about short chunks of time training is best, but is heeling different?

    So I have a severely dog reactive amstaff that also has OCD. Amstaffs are specifically bred to continue their behavior even in the face of aversaries, and because od his OCD he will not take treats when outdoors. He has had months of training and indoors is incredibly well trained, but the second we step out the door it's like a switch in a brain, and he won't do anything, not even sit, and even if you force the highest value treat you can in his mouth he will just spit it out. I have tried doing things where I have him heel with me out the door, I have dine excersizes where I work with the door open and I will take a step closer to the door, stop, have him sit, treat him, take one more step, and continue. It works for while im doing the excersize but if I take 2 steps he won't take the treats, and it doesn't apply or affect actual walks either. He has excitment reactivity that is trauma based, basically he will go after dogs smaller than him, german shepherds, rottweilers, and huskies. All other dogs he can completely ignore, but with those few dogs he will loose his shit at them. He is currently on a choke chain, and other things I have tried are side clip harnesses (it was the first thing we tried, inly used it for like a day and it had actually made him worse), and flat collars. I'm ordering a pring collar but I dont think it will work based from his behavior. Nothing I have tried has worked with him. Help?

    Can this method be used on a puppy? I have a German Shepherd that is 14weeks old and she pulls occasionally and barks at dogs on a leash, while lunging? She’s really good with training, just that outside is a different story lol. So my question is this method safe for puppies or no?

    Hey Tom, prong on 7lb chihuahua? I have one that is so anxious. He was 2 when I got him and some kind of really bad stuff happened. He’s amazing at home.. taking him out is a nightmare. I’ve tried literally everything and every tool, except prong collar. Nothing even kind of works. It’s like he doesn’t even hear me when he gets like that.

    @James Alexander I have read that prong colors shouldn’t be used until min 6 months old, is this correct? We have a 5 month GSD big male and think it would help for getting focussed again but dont want to go there too early. Do you think it is also a must for big dogs like GSD for correction/ control?

    So I have 2 questions: what if you can't use a prong collar? Would it be ok to give a pop on a flat collar?
    Secondly, my recent rescue is walked on a harness as he had bronchitis, so they (rescue) advised me to walk him in that to take pressure off his throat. How would I correct him as his loose leash walking isn't quite there plus he gets a bit excitable when seeing some dogs? I'm in New Zealand so we can no longer use prong collars.

      Izzy Boo NZ you cant do it with a flat collar. try a slip lead or a choke chain.

    Question: I have been using a prong collar for a little over a month now. Walks are actually enjoyable now! But she still whines like crazy because she wants to run around. Do I use the prong to correct her or how should I correct it?

    • @Temeraire519
      @Temeraire519 4 года назад

      Not an expert at all but I'd correct the whining with a distraction, maybe a treat or toy. Don't just feed your dog when they whine anticipate it and lure there nose away before the whine, it has to be before. At the end of the day it could also just be that they need more expertise.
