Joe & The Kelley Heroes are the best thing on Broadway right now!!! Love what this guy brings to the stage. What a freaking stud.
I just got my first upright bass a week ago. I'm 57 years old. Been a bassist for 40 years but now I'm getting into Western Swing, rockabilly, real old-school stuff. This instrument is fun!
Congratulations on your new bass and I hope you enjoy the journey! :-)
Same here! Just love the sound in the room and feeling that air move.
How's it all.going for you bud? Still slapping along?
I first learned to play slap bass in the streets as a busker but this is so awesome to have a slap master like Joe break it all down. Thanks guys!!
Glad you liked it and it's so cool that you busked slap bass!
Same here!
Ive had the pleasure of watching Joe at Roberts many many times,,,quite the entertainer,,,cant wait to get back there
My friend and I had the pleasure of seeing Joe play in a bar on Beale St in Memphis way back in 2008 when he was with The Dempseys. I even chatted with him briefly when I bought their two CD's. Real nice guy and thoroughly entertaining and the show those 3 guys put on was simply superb and a welcome relief from the down tempo Blues that was everywhere else. We're from London England and were on a road trip in a original '49 Chevy and Memphis was my last port of call before I had to head back to Chicago on a Greyhound to catch my flight home. I still play those CD's to this day and they always bring a smile to my face.
Sounds like an incredible trip! So glad you got to see them live.
Glad you recognize Many tololoche
He's incredible. We love his channel! ruclips.net/user/MannyTololoche
Very cool Joe! Good to see
You are doing well!
Really enjoyed this!!!!
Amazing! Performance at the end kinda reminded me of that video with B Purdie explaining the Purdie shuffle on drums
Excellent round-up of slap styles by a masterful slap bass player I’ve admired for years. Gives me a few ideas for my next performances 😁
Thanks Wes, I'm glad you enjoyed it :-)
Joe is so awesome. I love watching him in videos at Robert's western world
Met Joe when we both lived in Memphis, TN. Saw him play twice with The Dempseys back in the day at the Elvis Presley restaurant/club, on Beale Street when it was open. Their shows were insane showmanship, centered around using his bass for all kinds of stunts and antics, it was like acrobatics. The Dempsey videos here on RUclips don't come close to the stuff I saw them do live turn of the century. One time Joe was playing the bass sort of at a 45 degrees angle towards his left hand, and the lead player jumped up on the upper bout and played a lead solo. Insane stuff. Joe is a genuinely nice guy. Talked to him at a music store before he moved to Nashville.
Learning a lot more about his personal history that I did not know, good video.
Here for Mannytololoche and awesome you recognize my Mexican culture

Wow oui oui Nicholas D is the best !!Thank you for your video 🙏🙏
Glad you enjoyed it! We are big fans of Nicolas!
Dude!
I love Manny!
Is the high action needed? Looking at the string height on his bass and it looks very high. I'm looking at my own upright and it's set up much lower...easier on my left hand. Gotta woodshed on Slick Joe Fick videos I reckon!
Not crazy high, I would describe Joe's string heights as medium and not as high as I would have expected.
❤️
Would love to know what type of strings he uses to play that kind of great slap bass!
From memory, it's a raw gut D and G string and a wrapped E and A. We discuss it in a future video on Joe's set up which will be out soon.
Would like to know this too. Will be looking for the video.
👌👌👌👌
Joe Fick is Fantastic!
I play a 1/2 size for comfort, but I think that Joe’s playing a 3/4, here…
Yes, Joe's bass is a 3/4 👍
👍🙂
Joe Fick is just amazing. Thank you for this video, but it is really sad, that the video-guy cut off Joes right hand when he showes his technique. The right hand is the most important and who is filming this should have a minimal understanding of music.
When you talk about slap bass you have to mention Steve Brown and Milt Hinton...
Absolutely!
and Chester Zardis !! dixieland 🎉
