In my youth, the toll was 3d, and free on foot. As children we would occasionally bring a boulder with us and drop it down into the mud below, resulting in a spectacular plume of mud clearly visible from the bridge. (Of course, we dropped the boulder “responsibly” under the health and safety rules for boulder dropping”, and under strict supervision and wearing goggles). Beautiful bridge and many happy memories of my father driving over it.

I've only been across the bridge once, the River Avon is about 250 feet below, nearly the same height as St Mary Redcliffe church spire.

The winning design for the type of bridge was actually a joint effort between Isambard and his father Marc, a great engineer himself. The building of the bridge really didn't get going until after the death of Isambard, 33 years after the winning design was accepted. The bridge build was actually done by 2 engineers named Hawkshaw and Barlow who submitted a much revised design, far from the original design of Isambard and Marc Brunel. The bridge stands as a memorial to Isambard rather than a feat of his engineering skill.

Waste of time - Misleading title - too much talk not enough information on construction.
