This song has some of the best uses of dissonance Ive ever heard. i really identify with this album now that im going through a hard breakup and divorce. I just hope they still have material for new songs.

@@BornForOsiris Same! I still check youtube periodically for "Karnivool new song" and hope for some new stuff to show up. I can't wait to hear these songs on the album. The really exciting thing is they are working with Forrester Savell again for the new album who produced and engineered both Themata and Sound Awake. Good things are coming! While we wait for new Karnivool, are you familiar with the Ian Kenny's (the lead singer) other band Birds of Tokyo? They are kind of hit and miss for me as their style is more standard pop rock and very different from Karnivool, but I like many of their songs and Ian Kenny is always an amazing singer no matter what he's doing. Their album Brace had a vibe similar to Muse, which I liked a lot. ruclips.net/video/rkjvv4edFEQ/видео.html
This song is one of the best in the entire Karnivool, no cap. I decided to do a drum cover since there wasn't one yet so here it is if ya wanna check it out! ruclips.net/video/QUHbHDYNp4k/видео.html
Wow! This is a unique awesome song. Thanks for this piece of art. Much better than all the recycled diarrhea you hear on the radio and tv. Thank you karnivool.
The screeching guitar line 0:28 at their show last friday was better than smoking fine quality crack with jesus and the devil. Time sigs become irrelevant when you hear this beast of a track in all its glory.
I also think it's in 17/16 (or alternating between 9/8 and 8/8 instead of two 17/16 bars, same result either way) I believe it's largely dotted 8ths, and that this is the rhythm: e. e. e. e. e. e. e. e. q e e e (dotted eighths, quarters and eighths respectively).
I feel that parts could be said to be in 4/8 and others in 9/8. Its his early 16th note signaling the next measure that really is a throw off that could just suggest the former 4/8. But I heard 9/8 in the breakdown. I also heard a count of 7/8 on the outro.

The time signature can also be viewed as 25/16. Count to 6, and add 1/16 afterwards. The bar ending at 0:40 is 5/4 and from then on it's one bar 25/16 followed by one bar 5/4. Afterwards some combinations with 4/4 also.
MJKTool Sure you can, and they are not very different (you can even exchange signatures that use different notes, and here both have 16ths). It's just that the accents will come up in different places.
yea i agree with Phil here.. just look at it like its 6 + 6 + 5 .. =17 its 17\16 and the part after the bridge is 4/4 then back to 17\16. try counting from the beginning of the song with the guitar riff.
The thing that puts me of the most is the drumming. Don’t get me wrong, I like progressive drumming (grew up with Bill Brufford, then Neil Peart and now I adore Danny Carey) but what Steve Judd is doing … I don’t get it and I don’t really like it. This song has a bit of a Mars Volta feel to it.
Like a something off of Bedlam, but with more of a punk Aesthetic. It's less chaotic than anything off of that record, but it's just as intricate.
Whole album does to a degree honestly. Always thought they were spinning a lot of TMV when writing
Musically cohesive cacophony complete with underlying badassery throughout. My fave from the album so far!

The time signature does not change throughout. It's all in 17/16, they just express it is several was using dotted rhythms to screw with your brain
17/16 screws with my brain even when played in just one way.
It's 17/8 throughout I believe. I count it as 6/8, 6/8, 5/8
Gonna see them in a month. I'm SO in a hurry to see people dance on that riff ^^
Woah! I don't remember this song! DISGUSTING. So good!
The riff and the verses are in 17/16, then the chorus is mostly in 4/4.
The screeching guitar line 0:28 at their show last friday was better than smoking fine quality crack with jesus and the devil.
Time sigs become irrelevant when you hear this beast of a track in all its glory.
Their guitars are alive I swear. Like two snakes intertwining on and offbeat
Fuck the time signatures this song kicks ass so who cares.
I just realized that this song is about the Mass effect's morning war, lol! That war between quarian and geth. Hehe
I also think it's in 17/16 (or alternating between 9/8 and 8/8 instead of two 17/16 bars, same result either way)
I believe it's largely dotted 8ths, and that this is the rhythm:
e. e. e. e. e. e. e. e. q e e e (dotted eighths, quarters and eighths respectively).
isn't 8/8 just 4/4?
This song is actually in 12/23. Its counted as 5/6 + 87/4 - 6/10. Its simple guys come on.
Once you got it is easy, but that is absolutely not a simple time signature.
I feel that parts could be said to be in 4/8 and others in 9/8. Its his early 16th note signaling the next measure that really is a throw off that could just suggest the former 4/8. But I heard 9/8 in the breakdown. I also heard a count of 7/8 on the outro.
Paolo Pace i have no fucking clue how you managed to count this in 5/4, but this is 17/8. I spent a while counting this fucker hahahah

MJKTool
then you better retake 5th grade science

The first half of this song is fucking perfect
The whole thing too

No dude, thats so stupidly complicated and it doesn't have to be. count it in simple 16th notes and you will find it is 17/8.
MJKTool :) No problem, cheers.
relliktrab To clarify.... you can't view it in a different time signature. 17/16 and 25/16 are so different.
MJKTool Sure you can, and they are not very different (you can even exchange signatures that use different notes, and here both have 16ths). It's just that the accents will come up in different places.
Y tho
Would love to hear some people's opinions on time signatures...
Lul
Well we're all here arent we? Lol
time signature is 17/16 and 4/4 in places. That's it. Too many complicated comments about the rhythm that make no sense
plebfilter right here, boys
1:32
2:32 is my favourite bit of the song. I don't really know why, just something about that vocal line is so fantastic.
@@headofvengarl8893 it's the chord progression as well. later it gets heavier and reveals itself more at around 03:20. yes, best part.

try counting from the beginning of the song with the guitar riff.
From 0:40 it alternates between 6+6+5 / 6+6+3
I may have to transcribe that one too...
haha u may be right !
Eyal T i'm sorry... is this discussion about a time signature of 17/16 in this song?... I am surely misunderstanding...

Theres Much More To Be SEEn Here
First part is 6/8 I think
No. No no no. It's 23/16. Or one bar 4/4 followed by one bar 7/16 (16+7 = 23).
