Today my best friend passed away due to injuries sustained in a car accident. Last December he was lucky enough to be a part of a group that brought Karnivool to New Delhi. This is his favourite band and Ian is his favourite vocalist. This also happens to be one of his favourite songs. He was lucky enough to hang with Ian pre and post show. It shouldn't come as a surprise that Ian was great and in fact even showed him how to do a couple of warm down exercises (since he was the vocalist for a band himself), even graciously getting a picture clicked with him. It is my belief that Eidolon is more a track about letting go of something that has been is beyond repair. An Eidolon is a ghost of spirit in greek mythology. The chorus goes I'm never gonna try, I lied I dared to speak my mind When all the old changes made before Don't seem to change a thing at all This to me looks like a relationship that is broken, where people claim they can change but never do. However the person is also in denial as the person they fell in love with is still somewhere summed up in this verse. I'm never gonna try I know that I won't go back It started with a smile, I know But it won't come back This is real! In the end I think what they are trying to put across is that people should accept reality of situations rather than false promises. Are you real?
There's a lot of poignant reflection on a failed relationship in this. The choice of words is brilliant too, because "It started with a smile, I know", it's almost as if to say the start of the relationship was great (as they mostly are), but now we're at a point where the good times are over. Which then ties in with the narrative that perhaps a new beginning is in order, because that concept brings joy. The song is about regret and what-ifs, and questioning a very difficult decision moments after it's been made, and trying to justify, perhaps stupid actions, that resulted in some decisions being taken out your hands. i.e. She broke up with me because she's a cunt because of these things. But I feel better now, because in a way, it was really me who broke up with her because of all these behaviours that were exhibited. Those behaviours are (unknowingly) identified as being negative, and counter-productive to the relationship (perhaps excessive drinking to run away from the fact that you're too cowardly to tell someone that you're not ready for that level of commitment, and if you are, it's not with them).

Here we go again!, for people trying to compare this album to the old shut up & enjoy it for what this is, cause I tell you what, I'm a guitarist & this band has only gotten better if you can't see it your probably A: not a musician so you can't hear it from a musicians ear,y'know all the subtleties or B: your just one of those NONE TRUE FANS who never let's a band grow because it doesn't sound like there old album,c'mon really real bands really believe in not sounding of a cover band of them selfs so they push the envelope to create something new but still in there same style & this is still KARNIVOOL just new & improved, cause by the way I have every album & if you really can't see the evolution to the new album your NOT! +Calixto Gutiérrez Salazar Fair to Midland is so underrated. Such a fantastic band. It really sucks that they broke up. Them and Karnivool are definitely some of my favorite modern rock bands.
I love it when people expect bands to make the same album over and over. People change over time, you're not going to want to make the same album at 31 as you did at 21.
This is a great video. I'm not a fan of performance videos and this goes great with the song. Short films to songs are better than plain music videos. I like the concept of this video too. Good job to the director and always a good job on the music boys. Always. Keep it up, and get your asses back to the states.
