Not Irish, Brythonic During that period of time, Brythonic was a culture (and language) found on a large chunk of the isles which is now modern day England. But over time, with various invasions, the Brythonic culture retreated further and further to the southwest of England (not the people though, an easy mistake many make, the people weren't really removed, but their cultural identity and language was). The modern culture and language most similar, still on the isles (as Breton is arguably closer but is in Brittany) is Cornish, but the whole of the west country (Cornwall all the way up to Gloucestershire, and ?Wiltshire?) still has echoed influence from the Brythonic people (the cheese roll that went viral online a while back, is in Gloucestershire, and has origins in Celtic harvest festival rituals) However, even then, all the different celtic cultures on the isles, both in the past and in present, were very closely linked. When I play Civ, I love to "build all the things" for my cities. I want an empire that takes care of its people. I leave my neighbors alone and play nice but they start something, I don't mind finishing this. I really like how this game allows you to savor the age you are in rather than rushing you forward. I felt that this was the major weakness of Humankind, it rushed you. I think I would really enjoy the sandbox nature of this game. Thanks for posting!
Your tactic of valuing relationships is how I tend to play things as well - I did a *lot* of humanities at university across various departments so I've seen a lot of scholarship on how important strong communities and strong relationships can be vs how destructive selfishness is in the medium-long term and even in games like Baldur's Gate 3 if I try to play a pragmatic self-interested character I end up wanting to make others think well of me as long as it doesn't put me out too badly. Building alliances just always feels like the smart play to me. This game does look a lot better now I've seen you playing it rather than someone who hadn't experimented with it first and couldn't really explain what was happening. It's still massively out of my budget and I'm saving for Civ 7, but if it eventually goes on a really good sale in a few years..... lol.

Celts are like ancient ancestors of our peoples. I respect them but they do feel a bit different from the Scottish when playing games. It is nice we share that point of connection as sibling cultures, but its worth valuing what makes us separate as well as what makes us the same. Maybe you could evolve into Scotland or Ireland in Civ 7 for example. That could feel nice. I'd like future age cultures too tho. Like maybe future Scotland turns into a Celto Norse culture. Could be cool.

Well, I was very skeptical of Ara until this video. It definitely feels more like Civ 4-6 than 7 does. I like the micro angle, especially since it might provide a different type of gameplan to Civ. Options are good, I will definitely pick this one and keep it in my back pocket for when I need a change from Civ's formula. I do have some minor critiques which is what I imagine the developers are looking for with these early looks....the first of which is some of the map icons. I like the overall look of the game, but the resource icons on specific tiles that denote something like "goats" is far too small, and it's not centered properly on the tile. They look atrocious. It's an easy fix that I hope they deliver on!

Spoiler alert. Sapho, Copernicus and Cesare Becaria were not leaders. Can you imagine playing a CIV like game with Lebron James or Martin Scorsese as US leaders? It doesn't make sense.
@@NC7491 Civ already has Gandhi, and has for decades. And they said in Civ VII they aren't limiting it to political leaders, and will have Confucius lead China.
What is weird about those two people is that they're modern Americans, not that they aren't politicians. Civ VII will have Benjamin Franklin for example.
@@joetheeskimo8885 Gandhi was obviously an extremely impactful political figure who was a leading figure in India's struggle for independence. It's not far fetched to have him as a leader.
As for the two people I mentioned, what's weird is that because they are our contemporaries, we have a very good grasp of what their core competency is and it's not politics.
Sappho is the equivalent of putting Maya Angelou as leader and that's absurd.
@@joetheeskimo8885 The Cherokee actually do have a modern leader- Wilma Mankiller (which is, on a side note, the most hardcore name for a leader that has no military bonuses at all XD).
This is the first impressions video that I've been waiting for
Bro, this actually feels like a strategy game when you play it. Nice work. The end of turn resolution still doesn’t feel great though especially when you have to scout one tile at a time.
Irish? PotatoMcWhiskey?... "Slooooow grinding of gears" oh!
Not Irish, Brythonic
During that period of time, Brythonic was a culture (and language) found on a large chunk of the isles which is now modern day England. But over time, with various invasions, the Brythonic culture retreated further and further to the southwest of England (not the people though, an easy mistake many make, the people weren't really removed, but their cultural identity and language was). The modern culture and language most similar, still on the isles (as Breton is arguably closer but is in Brittany) is Cornish, but the whole of the west country (Cornwall all the way up to Gloucestershire, and ?Wiltshire?) still has echoed influence from the Brythonic people (the cheese roll that went viral online a while back, is in Gloucestershire, and has origins in Celtic harvest festival rituals)
However, even then, all the different celtic cultures on the isles, both in the past and in present, were very closely linked. So Potato saying that they're Irish isn't that incorrect tbh
@@fvoarin1307he means I am Irish
@@PotatoMcWhiskey Ah okay lmao, thought he meant the reference to Ireland at the start of the game. Just assumed everyone knew you were Irish lol. Now that I look at his comment again, I feel stupid for missing that
@@fvoarin1307 No worries! Maybe I didn't explain myself that well, I am from Chile and English isn't my native language. And I thoroughly appreciate the cultural explanation you gave! For one from so far away such as myself the topic is mystifying and enjoyable!

Oh wow, as an Atlas Reactor Multiplayer Veteran, this is giving me flashbacks, maybe even a little nostalgia. It’s not the same, but it brings me a ghost of a tear to my eye.
The plugin and description made me buy it instantly. Sounds like an amazing story.
Game looks better than expected! Seems a little on the war sim and mobile rts side for me mechanic wise, but overall it's really engaging becaus of how layered it is. The attention to detail in the art is pretty surreal even if I'm not a fan of the style. f I had to compare to other recent forexes I'd say it's not quite on par with Humankind personally, but it's definitely faaaaar ahead of jankfest Millennia. The two things I'm not a fan of at glance is how units don't "feel" like units, they're almost too small and it looks like managing ants, and the RTS style mapping. They went for quantity and complexity for sure, but I don't see myself feeling engaged in a narrative. The leaders are all great and it's awesome they have so many at launch, but they do all look like the corporate art grubhub guy to me. 😂
Idk, human kind is kind of garbage. You shouldn't have to download mods to make the UI easy to read, and the tutorial is marginally better then Ark
@@adamorick2872those are just nit-picks though, they don't make the game garbage

i hope the email that he didn't read, didn't come with content sharing restrictions. we want you to continue making content.
I really appreciate the walkthrough and stopping clearly to explain everything going on, because there is a lot thrown at the player in this game. It's not exactly my cup of tea because I personally find that micro this granular is more frustrating than fun, but there are a lot of cool ideas in the game that I would love to see expanded into other 4Xs with a little less focus on the hyper-minutiae.
Comment for the algorithm.
I like your fast-paced gameplay far easier to follow and stay engaged.
I hope this is supported well with balancing, updates, etc. Looks like a great game
Already learned more in the first 13 mins of your play through than i did in an hour and a half of playing with the tutorial on. 👍
Potato: "I don't know how to make people like me."
Oh come on, McWhiskey, we're all your best spud buds!
This looks really interesting! I saw it on Steam, but wasn't considering picking it up before watching this, so thanks!
This looks cool and original, thx for the preview.
I...think I might sit on this game for a bit because the resource management and production chains seem to be somewhere between a colony builder and grand strategy.
Really like your videos, Potato. Thanks.
Okay this game looks right up my alley! This will fill in my time between now and Civ 7.
It's still massively out of my budget and I'm saving for Civ 7, but if it eventually goes on a really good sale in a few years..... lol.
Thanks Potato, now I had a dream about this game and it was really cool and will never live up to dream expectations.
Beautiful design. Like the organic tile shapes. Lots of similarities with Civ 7 in the mechanics, too. Gotta check this out.
We love ya Potato, hope ya have a good day
Great game, scratch my Anno and Civ itch, great for people who love supply chain management
I heard Nintendo claimed a patent on difficulty scales based on European historical nobility titles.
God no... Nintendo pls
Pal world deserves to get sued with those pokeclones though
@@MegaCocoa125 If you think that way, they still sued them for the wrong reason. If those models were indeed too similar, it'd be copyright, not patent. Nintendo filed a patent lawsuit though.
@@MegaCocoa125 Then Dragom Quest should sue Pokemon? What about that? I can't understand why would you defend a big corporation like that like screw them. They are doing everything to just fill their pockets. Palworld is amazing and actually gives fans what they want.

15 minutes in, and this looks heavy as hell. I was already thinking Millennia was a bit much for me, particularly late game, but this seems to be throwing even more information at you all at once.
Very weird to use the most famous Britonic Celt to represent Gaels/Irish. Like, she's a British/Welsh national hero. Just a really weird pick
Have they used her to represent the Irish? Aren't the city names Celtish?
@@couruu they're in Gaelic (I don't know whether its modern Irish Gaelic or old Gaelic). It's why Potato can pronounce them. The 'celts' went from Ireland all the way to Anatolia, and included a massive amount of sub groups (who often spoke different languages).
Boudicca was from a Britonic tribe in modern day Norfolk (Brittonic celts used to occupy the British isles, minus Ireland and North Scotland). The closest relation to the language she spoke would be Welsh, which evolved from common Brittonic.
@@oscarbarton4125 It's not entirely Irish Gaelic, although I'll concede it's mostly. Obar Dheathain (Aberdeen) is Scottish Gaelic, and around that town (27:55) you can also see Dùn Phris (Dumfries, Scottish Gaelic), Breizh (Brittany, Breton) and Wrecsam (Wrexham, Welsh). They probably could've made it clearer that it wasn't just Irish by including more Brythonic/Brittonic names, like Dyfneint (Devon, Southwestern Brythonic) and Durnovaria (Dorchester, Brythonic).
"Tokugawa senpai please like me more - Ara Ara!" and at the same time in mind "Iyawasu sama might be plotting to declare war - I need troops, guard my border" 😂😂😂
well done 👍🏻 ✅
Been waiting for this, thanks potato!
Ive sunk many hours in and am loving Ara. The building supplies are not consumed btw, just add a small benefit but dont get burned. This is in contrast to production supplies which are consumed in order to speed production of an item and are item specific e.g. fish and salt the salted fish good.
I feel that coasts are underpowered as you only get two exploitations on water and they dont produce much food.
"my computer's getting a bit old" while scrolling through the list of options all turned up to Ultra in order to find the frame rate limiter.

watching potato's first moves like a civ games is very amusing :D
The stick is a time honored tradition to make it easier to walk for longer, we must have the stick ALWAYS!
Instant classic for me. Absolutely not civ killer as it isnt civ.
But in terms of fun, gameplay complexity and hours invested.
Its a civ killer, as i dont boot up civ6 anymore (we will see how long it lasts)..
Come for the gameplay, stay for the "your mom" jokes. Game looks great thanks for reviewing!
ara seems to go a completely opposite route of what civ is heading now.
Definitely like to micromanage everything especially late game when everything is a slog. But hey if you want a game designed like it was still 1990 then by all means
@@TheSjurismore micromanaging means more room for strategy and min-maxing. But of course you'd have to be a pretty dedicated player to really enjoy that
@@jonathanpilcher337 it also means that you’re going to need a super computer to run it and the game is going to bog down in the late game. If I wanted a micromanager I would buy resource management simulator which is what this is. It takes the worse part of Civ and then maxes that out. Most people don’t want this. A $60 tag for a game that isn’t going to appeal to many is really high.
@@TheSjuris I think you're forgetting how popular grand strategy games are
@@jonathanpilcher337 they aren’t as powerful as Civ. I get it if you like resource management simulators which is exactly what this is even though it’s being marketed as a Civilization clone.
had it on my wishlist but i was sceptical until i saw you play it and thought ok looks kinda good
The early game ambiance sounds/music is real nice
That was the first thing I was thinking when I watched some gameplay without commentary. 😁
You totally forgot about your mission to build colossus. Also use your tools in each building's supplies to boost efficiencies. You're missing out on a few production points in each building by not using supplies.
thats because he is doing that thing wheere if a game is like another game they have played, and most other similar games are too, they can miss details that are different even if they are obvious (enough).
This game looks like it was made for civ-like developers. I love the bonfire being the capital building at the start. Really cozy.
I like it so far. The production chains and various ways goods provide bonuses are interesting mechanic, but yes it might be micromanagement intensive.
The UI seems to be working against you to make it fun and easy to manage the game
Been looking forward to your take on it Your gonna beast this, its for the young guns but someone like you willl drill this down to a massive win fast
I like that its an aggressive game, you benefit massively with aggressive tactics
I believe you're thinking of humankind with the animals and people reacting to the mouse. Its a really cute feature of that game.
The map view and feeling is interesting, I like it!
People complaining about how this game is too micro intensive should check out Paradox games sometime 🤣
This game is about halfway between Civ 6 and something like EU4 or HOI4 in complexity and clicks.
I love that you spend some effort learning how to pronounce names when you're playing historical games!
Ieyasu is four syllables: I-e-ya-su. I is pronounced like how you read the letter "E" (like in feet), E is like "eh", the A in "ya" is like in "yard" (not the a in "hat"), and "su" is like the name "Sue".
I also noticed city growth not get updated when I plugged in an amenity, but I think it's intentional. The way I understand it, almost everything you do in your turn is to queue up orders. They don't actually get resolved until you hit end turn. There's a small icon where you can see what you have ordered. It's part of the way Ara does simultaneous turns.
Perhaps we can get a DLC with a proper Irish leader along with Thailand / Khemer with Elephants and Indonesia with Nusantara (any foreign units become slowed & weakened) and Gotong Royong (gathering & production +10% and pop growth +1) abilities and Australia with Crocodile Dundee leader with always spawn Kangaroos in border giving + food and leather. 😂

Did they adjust units so that they can go back into reserve to then redeploy into a new unit? In a beta they didn't allow for that.
@@CowboysD257 I have the same question, if they did add that I couldn’t figure out how…
@@esharp86Same here, and I do think this is needed.
They didn't, feels completely off. I don't see any balance issue as you'd be losing the experience the unit gained.

Nah viking is our ancestor not some ginger head

"Probably another video right after this one so gp check it out." I would love to see more. I have to say I feel this game is entertaining to watch, but I am not sure if I had the patience to micro to the point that this game might require myself.
Boudicca is closer to Welsh than Irish. She would have been part of the peoples who got pushed in to modern day Wales and South West Scotland, and were Brythonic/Brittonic speakers.
What an absolutely gorgeous game 🤩
"I like having friendly relations with my neighbors". Don't we all Potato, don't we all......
Potato is really in its natural environment with this performance here
The map is so beautiful, I wish the UI wasn’t so clunky and jarring. I feel like it takes up way more space than it needs to.
Potato went from im a pretty chill player to declare war of annihilation 😅

Copernicus leads Poland, seriously? :D What criteria are used for leaders in this game? :D
Played it on gamepass:
- Gameplay loop reminded me actually more of ANNO than Civ/Humankind/other 4x
- There's a LOT of micromanagment
- Optimization sucks
- Game is cool but I would highly suggest waiting at least 2/3 months to see if they gonna be patching things out
