- The RX-160 Byarlant was first deployed in UC 0087 as a unit in the infamous Titans. After the Gryps War, a surviving unit was designated as a technology testbed and upgraded into the RX-160S Byarlant Custom. The suit’s thrusters were enhanced, and the addition of propellant tanks extended its operational time flying through the atmosphere. The Byarlant Custom was armed with two mega particle cannons that could also generate beam sabers. In place of the Byarlant’s small manipulators, the RX-160S featured two claw arms that could be used in melee combat.
I always got the vibe that the pilot is some cranky old ex-Titans ace who wouldn’t let anyone else touch his machine, and was happy to finally see some action.
It is! It's piloted by Robin Diez. From the gundam fandom wiki:
"Robin is an ex-Titans pilot who is currently assigned to the Earth Federation's Torrington Base as a mechanic. During his time in the Titans, he piloted a RMS-108 Marasai and a RX-160 Byarlant. He was considered to be a very exceptional pilot. The base commander is unaware of his past."

Unicorn's definitely one of the best Gundam shows. The action packed scenes, the grunts, even small heartfelt character moments like Banagher and Zinnerman speaking in the desert or Mineva with the cafe shop owner. Unicorn's philosophies don't just stand with Gundam's typical anti-war and anti-violence philosophies, but it also shows corporate corruption and how it affects goverments when corporations and governments collaborate, and how governments are willing to create conspiracies to deny the rights of races or people, because they believe it's what preserves law and order.

@@mikkodoria4778 mercury was counting on the yuri plot aside some nice duel of guel v sule and those phyrric fights ( sophie n boys) vs the benerit there aint some grand scheme aside using Gundarm for peace ( more like smearing benerit with camouflage)
I really like the idea it experiments with. Having all its beam weapons share the same emitters. Being able to vary the output on the mega particle cannons or turn them into beam sabers with little downtime from switching makes it able to quickly adapt to a changing battlefield and capitalize on its mobility.
The pilot and machine embodied what the Titans were meant to be on paper. Skilled pilots in high quality machines meant to take down terrorists and insurgents.
There was a second unit in the anime that never got deployed according to the manga. Apparently it was due to technical issues. I'm just imagining a version of this scene where there's more then one of these units dicing up the enemy. Robin Diaz (The pilot of the Byarlant Custom) did amazing.

Version 2 had actual humanoid hands. It was able to swap out weaponry like a typical MS. It also still had some of the particle weapons built in like the original base unit.
It failed to launch because of software malfunction. I remember reading it was all due to all the mixed and matched limbs and parts that were tacked on to the machine.
The Byarlant never existed in the novel. They made it up for the anime. The novel had more focus on Federation grunt VS Zeon grunt battles. Not a super hero byarlant.

fun fact : Zee Zulu were completely unharmed by Byarlant Custom Beam Machinegun is a clear example if next generation composite armor used by grunts unit like Jegan, Geara Doga, and Geara Zulu have much better capability to tank beam damage from beam weaponary compared to previous. well, its not completely negate the damage from beam, but its still a good armor to hold against lower output beam weaponary
Some grunts would have to catch up.
Anti-Beam-coating can be add on the MS but its very very thick and heavy. And the thickest ABC on the shields still can't defense BR or BC.
That's why the Fighter jets don't have heavy armor to defence missiles.
ahh that explains why he uses beam sabers to slash the first Zee Zulu, and the second (poor) sap got smash into a building.
Another fact, the Zee Zulu pilot is a main character in the side story.

One thing I have always loved about Unicorn was all the love for both MSV and older mobile suits
The older Z'Gok models are vulnerable to the Byarlant's beam cannon, but the new Zee zulus have an anti beam coating that deflects attacks. I really enjoy these detailed portrayals.
This mf had a short time of screentime, but he just took my heart.
Glad to see another veteran in a heavily customized grunt suit.

I wouldn't call the Byarlant a grunt suit. It was a very limited production high performance aerial combat unit.

Salute for the 1st Zee Zulu pilot who protect fellow Zeon/Sleeves pilot and sacrifice himself to make sure the Zogok pilot can escape and fight for another time.
F For the Zogok pilot who probably got wasted by the Byarlant anyways, as fast as those Zulus went down.

Fun fact the zogok that survived went on to fight pirates and destroy a modified Hygogg so it and some other zeon remnant forces could escape
The one Mobile Suit that change the tide of the attack. You even saw it took a Beam Sniper shot and survived it then took out a Marasai like it didn't even took any damage.

it may not have regular hand manipulators but boy does it pack quite the punch for something that only got claws.
It said that there were 2 units and the other one has normal arms to hold hand held weapons.

Byarlant literally solo'd the entire Zeon Remnant attack with ease. Pilot was a badass for sure, but the mobile suit's performance also played a huge role.
I fucking love that mech so much. It's so iconic and cool looking.
That one part where the remmnant guy tanks shots for his Zogok friend and takes his axe and goes in close, all in one move. That guy should get a medal for Pretty Combat Maneuver even though it didn't work...

ジェネレーターの換装、プロペラントタンクの増設、スラスターの強化等が挙げられており、分かりやすい改修は頭部のカメラがバイザー形式に変更された点だろうか
なお改修したのは、元ティターンズ兵でグリプス戦役後は整備士として所属していたディエス・ロビン

実は二機あって、最初にハンガーの中から撃ったのは、自機を失いながらもハンガーに到着し、その改修していた一人から借りて、撃った
そしてもう一人が、無双したパイロットで、元ティターンズの中尉で、バイアランのテストパイロットだったんです
グリプス戦役末期に宇宙に行く予定だったが、打ち上げ基地に向かう途中で連邦軍高官の乗ってた飛行機が襲撃されてるのを知って、独断出撃し、シャトルに載れなくなり、表向き死んだ事にしてた

The fact that byarlant can fly freely in atmosphere without minovsky particles is crazy

The original Torrington battle had the Neo Zeon Grunt suits escorting the Shamblo Mobile Armor. They didn't randomly "split up" in different directions like they randomly did in the anime.
The Federation defense force was grunts led by Jestas and Unicorn Gundam. There was a more focus on Federation VS Zeon grunt suits.
Byarlant never existed. Unicorn Beam magnum couldn't even dent the Shamblo Mobile Armor.

Im one that became a fan from his appearance! XD Its rare we get to see Zeon forces get trashed by a non Gundam ace, its boring to see the EFF always on the back foot.
I wish I could get the sound that the beam weapon had at 1:02. Its used as the foot steps for the mechs in Big O as well. Its such a cool sound.

Very strange how an old Zaku III wrecks the Byarlant in Twilight Axis anime, but even newer suits like the Geara Zulu lose horribly to Byarlant.
Geara zulu are actually have lower performance than some axis zeon era MS such as bawoo, zaku III n doven wolf

The reason why Zeon losing is they ALWAYS blew all their budget for incredibly powerful prototype Mobile Suit/Mobile Armor (Gyan, Elmeth, Zeong, Neue Ziel, Qubeley, Hamma Hamma, Bawoo, Dreissen, Qubeley Mk-II, Zaku III, Geymark, Doven Wolf, Quin Mansa, Qubeley MP, Jadg Doga, Sazabi, Alpha Azieru, Kshatriya, Shamblo, Rozen Zulu, Neo Zeong) than the mass production machine while Federation prefer Quantity over Quality since they make a cheap, easy to produce and all rounded machine that have a long service in long-term war (Ball, GM, GM II, Nemo, Rick Dias, GM III, Jegan, Gustav Karl, Heavygun, Jamesgun, Gun-EZ and more)

One shudders to imagine how powerful this thing would be if it wasn’t saddled with those beam MGs. The pilot managed to pull through with melee but I imagine this fight would’ve been a lot easier if the custom had kept the original Byarlant’s beam guns.

The thing's only only weapons was a pair of claws with beam sabers and mega particle canons with thrusters on the back yet it totally destroyed all of these rift raft relic of the old ms. The pilot (Robin Diaz) definitely s one ace of a pilot

This Byarlant's pilot seems trying to avoid unnecesary casualities in several occasion including this one.
Though he spilled unnecessary blood as well when he destroyed a disabled gelgoog. This's unclear what's his motive.

They are fighting at the Feddie's Torrington Base in Australia and the Byarlant Custom is a special case. The original Byarlant, along with the custom unit shown here, was designed with sustained atmospheric flight capabilities in mind.

I hardly saw a Titan pilot decimating Zeon in the original Zeta Gundam series because for most of the time, they are just fighting the AEUG.

What happen to it after getting shot by Kirks's Zaku Sniper Custom ?
From what we can see, the unit should have fallen to the ground due to one of its flying powers being destroyed, but most likely it survived because the Zeon sniper was immediately busy dealing with his comrades who were pressed and 1 Jesta squad immediately attacked him.

Mobile suit gundam Unicorn and it's sequel to Mobile Suit Gundam char's counterattack.
I recommend to start with the original Mobile Suit Gundam to understand the series.
I think the pilot was an ex member of the titans.
I hope there a lot of non Gundam From Earth Federation can match Gundam's
