  • UPS workers reveal a culture of abuse and retaliation for workplace injuries. The company rushes employees back to work before they've healed, and works with insurer Liberty Mutual to dispute workers' injuries and intimidate their families. One worker was permanently disabled after UPS and insurer Liberty Mutual fought to deny him medical care for years. Another was fired for misremembering his injury time by 11 minutes.

I'm a driver. Trust me. They don't give a crap about us. Be VERY careful with their "worker's comp" doctors. They're bought and paid for. My buddy hurt his back pretty badly on his route and called the office and they told him to go to the worker's comp doctor on his route. So he goes down there really hurting and the doctor walks in and says "well man here's the deal... your boss said he needs you on the road and so I'm gonna give you a shot and send you back out..." My buddy hit the roof but done what he was told. Shockingly, he wound up hurting himself even worse and wound up missing months. That's just one example. I also know another driver that is looking at amputation of her foot because she hurt it so badly but then the company "doctor" told her she just needed "physical therapy" while her own doctor said "no way...that's a surgical repair..." She had to do what the worker's comp doctor said first and now she may lose her foot. UPS management is a disgrace to humanity. Just a bunch of alcoholics with failed marriages that bully their people because they have no one that respects them because they're not worthy of being respected. Period. If you're a UPS mgmt member and you're reading this you can go jump off a bridge.

@WhatTheHawk91 If you're gonna quit it's better to do it early because the money is so insane that's it actually winds up functioning as a trap. If you get used to a 6 figure lifestyle it would be hard to get not used to it but even that comes with enormous sacrifices and tons of wear and tear on your body and incredible stress on your mind. I've been at UPS for 21 years and it's rough everywhere there.

But the UPS doctor insisted with a week of bed rest I'd be fine, this was after I hadn't been able to stand straight up for over a month. I currently work for UPS and this video conveys one of the many major issues with the company. I can't tell you how many people I know have been targeted unjustly for reporting injuries. UPS employees get targeted for filing grievances too. The worst I've witnessed is watching two workers being accused of being high on the clock at work but watching those same employees test negative and come back to work with a paid vacation. I cannot speak for how high up the ladder I am in management but anyone who has worked for company knows UPS likes to move MGMT around. Contrary to what people say it's the same from hub to hub. If you work here, make sure you are paid for ever second you are on the clock. This is more so an issue with part timers than it is RPCD. I cannot elaborate but somehow someway a few minutes can get shaved off here and there on PT paychecks. The worst offense of all is watching the union supposedly representing the workers but that isn't always the case. I could go on and on.
Remember that all of this is being done for a reason. UPS will without a doubt go under at some point. What I witness on a day to day basis is enough to make your skin crawl. What we do to others comes back to us. As for me I just do my job. Please take care of yourself and your family. Thank you for reading.

Seem like you are bring different issues and not talking about the video. I also work for UPS and i do agree with management being moved around and alot of the reason why that is you get to learn different aspect of the business. Doesnt matter where you work some companies do have that policy of moving people around so you are not in your comfort zone..
From what i know that UPS has a zero injury policy because they coach on safe work methods. If you are not following the safe work methods it will definitely result in an injury.
During the Injured employee questioning you can clearly tell if an employee disregard the safety or not. I have my self seen several injuries where you know that the employee was taking shortcuts to do the JOB.
In the end of the day it is not companies fault on your decisions where i am working despite how many time you talk about the same thing people still don’t listen and we have seen injuries due to unsafe behaviors.
Also if you are part of management then you should be well aware of drug and alcohol policy if two supervisors comes to the same conclusion then definitely he/ she will be tested. If the pass then it is all good..

@@nimnim309 When I was a driver, I was delivering a package to a residence. There was a trash can in the ground that was covered by leaves. My leg fell into it and the edge of the can ripped a 6" long tear in my shin. At the time of injury I didn't feel much pain nor did it bleed much but I did have them call an ambulance because the homeowner thought it looked way worse than I did. The hospital stitched it up and said to stay home the next day. The next morning I was in so much pain I could barely get out of bed even with pain meds. I went into work the following day hobbling on crutches because I was still in tremendous pain so they could see what happened. My on-car supervisor told me that I was being docked a days pay for missing work the prior day. I was expected to come in and sit in the package car and literally direct the other driver where to go. And I had a difficult time even getting out of bed that day. He didn't care, a supervisor that I once had a lot of respect for- I immediately hated him and lost all respect for him. I busted my backside for him and did a great job every day. After that episode, I did the minimum I needed to do to get the job done. Priority #1 at UPS is the box. It's treated like royalty. Priority 2-9 is the box, followed up by the employee at the bottom of the list. UPS preaches safety and good work habits (lip service) but the way they force the workload on the worker, it's not always possible. I used to watch videos of loaders stacking boxes into really nice tiers or walls. The volume of flow coming into the trailer was very slow in the video and people would laugh at the lack of reality where the volume would be coming in at a rate of 1000-1300 pieces an hour if not belt wide at times.
UPS cares only of the box. The employee is treated with lip service. The company gets away with it because of the golden handcuff rule. They pay a high wage that no other company will pay because they know the worker cannot go anywhere else for the same pay, thus the handcuffs. This includes drivers. Fortunately I was told this in my early days and decided to leave (15 years) before I started down the disability path for my knees and I started a new career and now I'm doing fine. UPS is a good company, don't get me wrong. I've worked at FedEx too and UPS is the better of the two. Neither company gives a dam about the worker even though they preach they do (lip service). UPS pays very well but in the end you get a high wage to put up with a ton of BS. It's simply a matter of how long you can take the BS or the physical abuse to your body. I'm waiting to see how long it will be before Teamsters pension goes belly up. I never trusted them either.

@@nimnim309 You are correct. I'll go even further and not sugar coat it and say we have a lot of stupid employees working for the company regardless of position. It's unfortunate to see so many not take care of themselves and end up getting hurt. That does happen. From the other side, you do know that UPS wants employees to work in a swift manner. If an employee is not meeting the standards they set, which they have every right to do, they can be disciplined. It would be unfair to not acknowledge some employees work faster than maybe they should to meet demands. It's their choice, but keep everything in perspective.
As far as drug testing is concerned, I'm more familiar with it than I specified. It does appear to have become a way to test employees that look the part and to be rid of the company. You know what I mean I'm sure. Our world is just awful. I'm not sure how anyone could be in favor of wrongdoing such as this or any of it. Just wrong.

I was a UPSer for 15 years. When I was part time, one of the most senior part time workers told me to write down your hours every day and make sure your time card reflects those hours. Come to find he was spot on. UPS will reduce the mandatory (by law) break period by 30 seconds (restart the belts) which doesn't seem like much, but when you multiply that by 300 workers in the building at the average hourly rate at the time (in my day it was about $11 hr) it added up to a lot of money, especially if the hub did this day after day over the year. Imagine the savings at the current hourly rate.

I worked there about 5 years ago as a package handler and had an injury (luckily minor enough so I could get it checked out once I got insurance). It seemed clear they had a system to dissuade workers from filing an injury report. It went from appealing to company morale ('it'll ruin our safety days streak') to convincing me I had no chance to prove my claim and it would be a big waste of time and would be putting my job at risk. They won, and I decided to wait to see if the pain would go away on its own. Luckily the union rep was nice enough (understanding he had very little power) to work something out where I could do lighter work (stuff the small-package bags). This made the main supervisor of the package handlers spiteful toward me and he basically mutated into an emotionally abusive father type. Quitting became my main priority. They won, but I'm glad it pushed me to the point of leaving that hellhole.

@WhatTheHawk91 I wasn't aware of anyone else being hurt there. I was only there for a few months, and the environment there was especially toxic in terms of how pressure from upper management was handled. I think much of it comes down to the personalities of the supervisors. There were no issues with the ones directly above (the ones that watch you from their perch) but the ones above them. I doubt they would've favored or had sympathy for anyone. They caused a lot of tension and must've thought insulting those below them was a good method of inspiring productivity. So I would imagine each facility and shift is different. I knew someone who worked the morning shift there (I worked night) and he said he had nice supervisors all around.

Anyway, it jammed my tailbone so bad I got sick to my stomach. I wanted to go home but the supervisor said he didn't have anybody to come out and get me. Being young and newer on the job I didn't want to make waves so I listened to the supervisor and layed on the back shelf while he continued to drive around and deliver for another two hours. It was a Friday so there was "no need for an accident report, just see how you feel on Monday". I felt better on Monday, but a couple years later the back surgery I had was "likely due to a trauma in the past". Of course the supervisor couldn't remember the incident.

My manager scolded me for attempting to lift it by myself and sent me to Concentra who said I was fine and dandy to go back to work the next day. I had a persistent pain in my mid back that would not go away. I went on workers comp and was scrutinized and usually refused by Liberty Mutual to go through with any of my doctor's recommendations. They ignored my complaint of a mid back injury and only authorized a lower back MRI. I did physical therapy and work conditioning which only made it worse. After 9 months of being in pain daily and getting nowhere, Liberty Mutual sent me to one of their doctors who said I was somehow fine to go back to work. I was dumbfounded. I fought it and eventually UPS said in order to get an injury settlement, that I would need to resign and never reapply. It was a heartbreaking end to my career at UPS. I was absolutely blindsided by the outcome.

@@IceESole Hi! Yeah! I took a whooooooooole lotta crap, which only intensified over the years. Do you work for OOPS? I worked a small Center in South Arkansas, our Hub was (it still is) in Little Rock.
I slipped going down some concrete steps carrying an arm load of clothing boxes, landing low back first on contrete steps, and it was in November -- DURING PEAK!!! What luck! (Not!) It was about 10 months into my FIRST year, and I was the only female driver on board. Although it was very painful, I worked the rest of that day, but I took off the next day for two weeks! I was met with resistance and suspicion (like I made it up, PUH -- leeeez). I was given one of the two heaviest (metro of course) routes in that center. I didn't take off again for several years. Because of all the running and jumping, squatting and lifting, and the gosh-awful extended hours and EXTRA NUMEROUS stops where flights of stairs had to be climbed, my knees had been hurting unbearably for A WHILE! Again I had to take off to have both knees scoped, and again I was treated suspiciously and abusively. During that time, the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) was passed into law -- for whatever it was worth. If you work for them you probably already know that they're ABOVE THE LAW!!! Anyway, things rocked on badly like that for too many more years, but the writing was on the wall. I stuck it out until I physically couldn't endure anymore. My knee were swelling up to the size of cantelopes EVERY DAY BY NOON. At that point, I took it to the house, although my actual departure dragged out a few years before I was truly free!! Do you work for them? If so where?

Been working inside a Hub for 30 years as a part time package handler. When the minimal acceptable requirements called for moving 1000-1200 packages per hour, I was moving 3000-4000 an hour (with rates as high as 6600 in some circumstances) every hour of every year as an unloader or sorter. Management's own estimates were that I have handled close to 100 million packages for UPS in the facility. So no one was surprised when I recently broke down with damaged knees due to 100 million pivots with the added weight of each package in my hands. Each movement feels like a mortal and pestle at work inside my knee. No one was surprised that is except for their insurer, Liberty Mutual. Their stance in denying the comp claim was that I didn't complain enough about the pain over the years from the repetitive motion! I'm six years overdue for a right knee replacement while my left is currently due. Even the UPS Concentra doctor that you are first required to see thought it was a legitimate claim, only some desk-jockey adjuster at Liberty Mutual wants to get their bonus by denying enough claims for the quarter.
I'm still performing the same job that caused all the damage. Can barely walk out to my car after a shift, walk the dog, or even sleep without pain waking me up. Our healthcare is predicated on working a set minimum amount of hours per quarter or you lose the coverage. I gave them everything I had every shift and it's apparently a one way street. I will say the management team has always been sympathetic and supportive, blaming the insurance company's greed for the delays and denials. But does Liberty Mutual just do the dirty work for them?

I'm considered a "part-time, preloader," meaning I load the trucks the drivers deliver from. My part-time position starts around 2-4am til 8-10am, 5 days a week. I average about 30-32 hours a week. As a part-timer, I get NO benefits until I've been there for 9 months. I was hired during "peak season" Dec 2021 and in mid-January, I was "fired and rehired" as a permanent employee... THAT'S when my 9 months started. In March I started feeling an issue in my ankle. I had Medicaid from the pandemic, so I went and got checked out. There was a big ol bone chip in my ankle joint and the orthopedic doctor said it was from going from a semi-sedentary life to 20K steps a day that did it, as well as me being 40 years old. So I reported the injury to UPS, and they made me go home until Concentra opened, and then the doctor there said it was just a sprained ankle. I said can we do an x-ray, knowing that it was going to show the actual cause of the injury (as far as I was concerned.) When the doc came back with the x-ray he said, "oh, it's an old bone chip, just take Advil every day until it stops hurting." (I had had that foot xrayed 2 years earlier and there was no bone chip there, then...) I got put on light duty (which means I can only work 3.5 hours a day) for a week, until my next Concentra appt. At that next appt I saw a different doctor and told her what was going on, she said let's try some PT. Meanwhile, my public health podiatrist said let's take out that bone chip. I stopped the PT because it was wasting my time and not helping my situation, if anything it made it worse because they were trying to make me "strengthen the muscles surrounding the bone chip," when those muscles were rubbing against it causing the pain. UPS said that since I closed the claim out (back in May because they weren't HELPING me) then they weren't liable for anything. I kept working on the injury for months until I started feeling nerve damage from the bone chip rubbing against my nerves, so I tried to get something from UPS but I wasn't there for 9 months so I couldn't get even Short Term Disability. I took 10 weeks off, using my own savings to get the bone chip removed and recover from that. The union lawyer said, 'You'll never find a judge that will side with you about this so file for unemployment.' So I did, and I got denied because I wasn't "able" to work.
There are many problems with this situation and according to this video, it's happened to hundreds of thousands of employees. This new contract we are negotiating for better address the specific issue of benefits for newbies, the number of hours they are allowed to say we work in order for them to calculate your worker's comp (they say our base pay is 3.5 hours a day so we'd get 60% of THAT, not our ACTUAL average work week's pay) and making us go to Concentra. All these things are unacceptable and I'm encouraged by Sean O'Brien's leadership so far!

I got a concussion from a 76 lbbox falling on my head several years ago and I was told it was my fault because I "did not expect the unexpected". The workers comp doctor did not want to do a CTscan and I was suffering from motor skill issues and vision problems (no telling how bad it damaged me) and their neurologist just wanted to give me Tramadol and send me back to work. My lawyer told me it was best for me to just go back to work and try to get some light duty until I recovered because he couldn’t fight their large team of attorneys, telling me that UPS would only settle me out for $8000 (to not come back). So I didn’t take that bad offer. I returned to work to find they had fired me. I had to get Teamsters to get me my job back and make me whole with my seniority and benefits… Then, earlier this year, I had to work their with 2 broken fingers… It is truly a mess how they treat us there.

My BEST and funniest interaction with an injury and management was when my back muscle pulled and I was on light duty work. The was a good sized SELF PROPELLED snow blower sitting there and we had just gotten a foot of snow. I had the mechanic pull start it for me as I thought I'd be productive and figured I'd just hold in the levers and follow the machine around while clearing the walkways. No effort involved for those unfamiliar with snow blowers, just follow it and steer by squeezing the levers as it moves along. The boss came out with a 24" steel shovel weighing 15 pounds and wanted me to lift the snow by hand. I shut the snow blower off where it sat and walked inside to find other work to do. Eventually they had three of us that were injured tracking the exact same package that were not missing and nobody was looking for. One person would check each package on the page and verify it was delivered, then pass it to the next person to do the same thing, then they'd pass it to the next person to repeat the task, on packages that were not being questioned. Work created to make you wish you were healthy enough to go back to the regular job earlier than probably what was average.

Ups works hard to get ppl hired.
Then you’ll have no life despite their promises to improve work/life balance. So you’ll try to cut corners in an attempt to shave a few min off your day so you might get some time with your family. Doing that gets you hurt, or in an accident. Then UPS blames you, and you’re screwed.
We were still using paper to record packages when I started at UPS. I used to say it was the greatest company to work for. Now I’d never recommend working here.

I've not only been abused but I've fallen on the cement carpet tripping over a lose wire I didn't see, almost got electrocuted, got my finger partially sucked into the machine, fainted due to heat, almost broke my wrist, got a Herniated disk, etc....I've seen people get seriously hurt and company does nothing but tell u to drive to Urgent Care for evaluation. Then that doctor sends u back to work the next day regardless if you can move or not.

If a company is implying that you should not report your injury to workers comp or the company doctor. Get a lawyer ASAP! That’s a huge red flag. Also The company doctor Is not in favor of you. I’ve been through this working a Costco. They didn’t want me to report my injury because it well affect the companies “prevention of injury rate”. Idgf about that I’m hurt because you decided not add more full-time employees to save the “company money” causing me to over work my self. I thought you guys were a multi billion dollar company. I swear this companies are full sociopaths and psychopaths for leadership positions. Something is truly wrong with cooperate system in U.S and they do a good job of hiding it to. Which leads to more abuse within the workforce. I wish you guys the best of luck. Sad how we trust these ceo’s to take care of us. Physically, mentally, emotionally and financially and all we get is a slap in the face once we get injured during work hours.

I’ve had an injury years ago where the UPS safety supervisors would call my doctor and make them change my work status from "time off" to "light duty". (Even though there’s no such thing as light duty in the warehouse). They are truly in Cahoots with one another. No doctor is supposed to discuss your condition with a supervisor over the phone that way. They violate HIPPA patient confidentiality rights and everything. And then when I confronted the supervisor, I was told that they get fined over $20,000 for every reported loss time injury, and they said for That reason, they don’t need workers off work for injuries. I told him that was not my problem.

I worked for UPS for 10 years. Year 9.5 I got hurt and fractured my knee delivering a set of 16" tires. Was determined it was caused by repetitive motion injury and no fault of my own by our hub's safety department. Without going into details over a year of workman's comp and getting horsed around it showed the true side of UPS. Ended up leaving the company in the end after it all and do miss working for the company, but it showed the true nature of the company. UPS is/was a great company to work for...unless you got hurt. Then they made your life a nightmare

It's honestly insane how accurate this was for me as well, I had a better experience reporting an injury at Walmart than UPS. I was interrogated by management with no union rep and it was hostile the entire time. Concentra also didn't perform any MRI, they just asked me a few questions and determined I was fine to continue working. I was completely upfront with them about everything and they stabbed me in the back.

I used to work on the air ramp for UPS. Saw a lot of people get injured. Most of the time when someone got hurt, management would come down and interrogate you asking you to replay the scenario to them. 99% they would find some sort of technicality in your story and say something to the effect of, while in the act of you getting hurt you violated this certain "rule" so technically it's your fault. Seen it happen A LOT.

you know after reading and experiencing these "interrogations," I'm keen to find out what happens when I DON'T answer their questions with specifics and just give them a benign explanation that can't be connected to a safety issue on my part. but their "expect the unexpected" covers that specific issue I'm assuming. God, what pieces of shit.

I've already heard from other people at work. That management is trying to charge me with an avoidable accident. Trust me there was nothing I could do to avoid being hit by this person. • @Randy-tc3mv

I can confirm, everyone I've seen get hurt on the job, I have seen management turn on FAST. It doesn't matter how many years you have, what kind of worker you are, as soon as you get hurt once they look at you like a liability and a "comp case waiting to happen." All while entirely refusing to maintain damaged, unsafe equipment only to blame injuries on the workers themselves. They will preach safety to you every week, but when it comes time to lift a finger or spend a dime to keep people safe, they have a million excuses why it can't be done. "Just don't get hurt" should be the UPS motto. It's all on you to keep yourself safe.

It’s why we have a union. I’m a 35 year employee. Always remember you have the RIGHT to see your own doctor no matter what UPS says. Not only are they like this with injuries, but accidents as well. I hit a vehicle that ran a red light, was ticketed and my vehicle’s own telematics shown I was going under the speed limit. Another time, a guy backed out his driveway and hit me. That driver was ticketed as well. I was charged with both by UPS.
