    The theory that an owl being confused for mothman is even more credible when you look at a picture of an owl folding it's wings. The drawings show the eyes below the tops of the wings and where the torso of a human would be, along with how tiny the wings look. An owl folding it's wings perfectly fits the descriptions and the drawings.

      Also flying up without flapping wings though, that’s just weird. No owl stands over 5 ft. Not saying it’s real but the sightings don’t really leave room for something like an owl. That’s why many at the time many thought it was a sandhill crane.

The only cars that can do that are purpose built or modified Rally cars, no production car has ever been capable of attaining those speeds on a country road. Not to mention the owl left after a few seconds, so are you seriously saying that a car from the 60s accelerared from 0-100 mph on a country backroad in a few seconds, that'd make it faster than a fucking F1 car.

    I was a farmer for a while. Most folks don't understand just how scary a big owl on near silent wings can be. Young owls also bear a strong resemblance to so-called grey aliens, and the legs of owls are much longer than you would suppose!

    • @mrdarren1045
      @mrdarren1045 Год назад

      It wasn't an owl, unless owls can fly faster than a car, and do owls have glowing red eyes as well? The owl thing is just a convention story to fob people off with. It's a rather pathetic way of trying to erase the story. A bit like the ufo swamp gas thing. In fact for the longest time I had similarly sceptical ppl telling me ufos don't exist. Well i think the air force and their videos have settled that issue once and for all. It can't be denied any longer that ufos exist. It's just a pity more ppl didn't just take countless eye witnesses at their word. Just like with this mothman thing.

    If you've ever come upon an owl while driving down a lonely, winding country road, they can appear GIGANTIC and absolutely terrifying. When I was a kid, we were driving home late one night and a Great Horned Owl flew out of the woods right in front of the car. It looked bigger than our '69 Pontiac station wagon - no lie. My mom screamed, she was so scared. I can see how someone driving up on a Snowy Owl late one night would freak out and think it was some sort of "monster".

    Mothman is one of my favorite Cryptids. That being said, I think it's complete bunk. The lore is extremely spooky and interesting though, and it makes awesome fiction. I agree that it's likely owls. I remember when I was young and had my first car, a volkswagon beetle, I was driving at night and an owl swooped down and flew right along the contour of my car, front to back. For a second there all I could see what red dots coming at me, then for a split second it's wingspan completely covered the entire width of my windshield. Scared the living wits out of me. I can easily see how something like that could be mistaken for something a little more exotic.

Also in a mine somewhere, before it collapsed. The miners said it tried to run them out, or warn them the day before and that it ran on two legs. West Virginia= moonshine, Russia= vodka. Coincedence?....who knows, but it is kinda crazy.

    Guys, we need a proper name for this series. My vote's on "cryptozoolograph," the written record for hidden animals.
    Also, you should totally do a thing like in Cryptozoologicon, where after debunking the animal you say, "but if it *did* exist, it's biology and evolutionary history would be something like this," and then you create a ridiculous but still more plausible creature. OR, if you're super cool, you could have like a contest where your viewers create one of those creatures, and then on the next episode you give a shout-out to the one you liked the most. Sorry, I may be getting over-excited, but cryptids are one of my favorite subjects.

    • @TheBasikShow
      @TheBasikShow 8 лет назад +11

      Ridiculous-but-still-more-plausible creature suggestion:
      The Mothman is a highly evolved species of owl which feeds mainly on other species of owl. Standing at an average of about 1 meter high, it is entirely nocturnal, and spends the day in dense patches of trees, camouflaged in with pigment that ranges from white to dark grey. Because of its large size, it must rear its young at the bases of trees instead of at higher branches, preferably near rivers.
      The Mothman is considered to be relatively intelligent, and it is the only known bird to have a "funeral ritual". When a fellow Mothman dies, the Mothmen ritualistically throw its body into a nearby river, thus accounting for the fact that no Mothman remains have survived for study. Their behaviour also includes a cooperative nesting, wherein groups of parents will raise their chicks together, in order to be more efficient at bringing home food. Its nests are always well-camouflaged to deter attackers.
      Another interesting attribute of the Mothman is that its wing feathers extend entirely down its body, in a way similar to bats. This causes the extra lift necessary to hold up such a large creature in flight. Civilians sighting the Mothman are generally not aware of these wing extensions, and assume them to be part of the body, causing reports to have a much larger body and smaller wingspan than is actually present.
      The Mothman, sadly, is probably no longer with us. By the time of its first sighting, it was already a critically endangered species, with a population of around a dozen and an adult population of approximately 4. The final nail in the Mothman's coffin was the collapse of Silver Bridge, under which a nest of several individuals was situated. Although some specimens survived the collapse, as evidenced by the removal of all members of the nest, it is not considered likely that any of the young survived. With at most a single breeding pair remaining in 1967, the Mothmen are certainly no more.

    Years ago when our children were very young my husband and I were taking them for a walk through the woods next to our vacation home. A huge creature flew directly over our heads. If it had been dark and we had been young and or fanciful we could have said mothman flew over our heads. We realized that it was an owl and as soon as it was past us we could see that it was an owl. We must have gotten too close to its nest. When you described the creature and from the picture i was sure that they had seen an owl.

    I was driving down a dirt road about 10 miles from tnt and saw a large great horned owl eating a rabbit in the middle of the road. That suddenly popping into your headlights out in the middle of nowhere definitely makes it appear much larger and more terrifying. I used to do a lot of late night catfishing in the point pleasant tnt area and I actually saw something I am unable to explain that was mentioned in the mothman prophecies book. sightings of floating glowing lights along the rivers in that area are very common and I witnessed one once while late night catfishing. I saw a tree start glowing and then a floating ball of light came out of it and slowly floated away among the trees. whole process took about ten minutes. ball of light was about two feet across, moving about twenty feet high, and moved about five mph. It was an amazing sight and I can verify that I wasn't all that drunk.

    Cryptozoology doesn't deserve the hate it gets. Yes it's a one in two billion chance there is anything even remotely like what people talk about out there, but we've found crazier things before. When tempered with the knowledge that you are probably running after nothing the study isn't so bad. It's more like reality assurance. We're making sure we didn't miss something because we didn't check enough.

      I believe this dude.
      In my views? Either it's incredibly smart, like "beam me up, scotty." level of smart, a demon from some Judeo-christian myth, a HUGE hairy crazy dude, a really really rare giant monkey, a giant monkey ghost, or a hallucination.
      Grandpa's only drug is Jesus, and even then he takes him in moderation compared to others who share his faith at the state he lives at. His mind is sharp, seriously calm, incredibly dry humored and mannered, and doesn't take himself or life too seriously.
      Alright, Gramps might not have seen Bigfoot, but there was this mundanity to the subject of conversation and reluctance to tell me what he went through. Reluctance isn't the best word here, but I got nothin else, more like disbelief in what was coming out of his mouth.

    I love how every flying cryptid has a ten foot wingspan. Giant thunderbird that tries to fly off with children , 10 foot wingspan. Scary moth thing that's a harbinger of doom, 10 foot wingspan. I think people dont realize how small 10 feet is when it comes to flying animals. I had a couple white pelicans fly over me at work today. They have 10 foot wingspans and they're no where near 6 feet tall. Also funny how everything that walks upright is 8 to 10 feet tall. People see something have no frame of reference for the height and when asked say "uhhhh what's a big human seven feet okay it was definitely bigger than that I'll say 8 to 10 feet"

    Pretty much an owl, I encountered one while driving on a secluded road at night. It even was pretty curious and followed me about ~100 meters while maintaing a speed of 70-80kph. Humans tend to exaggerate the size of light objects in the dark, so a snowy owl would be plausible. If you take a look at pictures of young owls, you can easily see seemingly strange leg - body ratio

    Later sightings might not necessarily be deliberate fabrications, I think it's very possible that more than one person has seen a big owl, and after hearing the original story though that their owl also was a mothman. Many people seeing many different owls would also explain why reports vary about mothman's color and size.

    I terrified my friends by putting shapes outside there house and near midnight (I was staying at their house that night). They got terrified because there was a creature outside. It was just pereyedolea or however you spell it. Basically it is when your brain can’t tell what something is so it makes a pattern from something you barely see so it looks like something creepy. Their reactions were hilarious!

    On the wingspan... I don't disagree with you on any point. Rock solid. I would like to add that unless a person uses measurements on a daily basis, judging size, especially at night, is nearly impossible. The claim of a ten foot wingspan is probably a gross miscalculation brought on by misjudged distance and leading questions by investigators.
