  • Rhiannon Giddens's "At The Purchaser's Option," from her album, 'Freedom Highway,' out now on Nonesuch Records: rhiannongiddens.lnk.to/Freedo...
"Last year I came across an advertisement from the 1830s for a young woman; thinking about her, and how she had to maintain her humanity against horrific odds inspired this song named for the end of the ad: 'She has with her a 9-month old baby, who is at the purchaser's option." -- Rhiannon
At the Purchaser's Option (Rhiannon Giddens/Joey Ryan)
I have a babe but shall I keep him
'Twill come the day when I'll be weepin'
But how can I love him any less
This little babe upon my breast
    You can take my body
    You can take my bones
    You can take my blood
    But not my soul
I've got a body dark and strong
I was young but not for long
You took me to bed a little girl
Left me in a woman's world
Day by day I work the line
    Every minute overtime
    Fingers nimble, fingers quick
My fingers bleed to make you rich

This song really touched my soul. I'm an old white man that never really thought about the unspeakable horrors that accompanied slavery. I was aware of the men, women, boys, girls being sold, beaten, raped, lynched; but for some reason the disposition of the babies belonging to young girls was something I failed to comprehend.......until this song brought me into that unfathomable shame. I cried. I still cry. I'm 71 years old and can't quit thinking about what these poor human beings were subjected to..This can never happen again..NEVER. God help us...me. God bless you Rhiannon Giddens. Your music has enlightened me; I pray it enlightens others.

"I've got a baby, shall I keep him?"
The title reminds us that the choice isn't her's. She's being sold, with child, at the purchaser's option...for the child.
She knows that if they don't want the child, but do want her, that child will be removed from her.
The grim historical context is soul-crushing; the reminder that this practice hasn't changed is painful to admit.

Rhiannon, I see you in trance back with that woman and her baby, and with all of us oppressed. Your song reminds us that the slave/master paradigm is still used by so many in power that purchased that woman, her baby, then ...and still try to purchase us like just another of all the commodities, they think they own everything, everyone, but they can never get at or own our souls. Your video is brilliant showing the woman' and her baby, whose souls flash across the screen, as they are still with all of us now, even as those in power think they can still try to oppress and try to steal our souls but can't!!! Thank you for your powerful reminder of what we are that they can't ever have. Dr. Darryl Luke Pokea

It's not my place to say I understand this pain. This song makes me feel pain and ache for people who felt it in it's full, wicked unfiltered sensation but it can never ever compare. I for one will not forget the cruelty and wickedness put upon people taken from their lands to be drove to others only to be treated like cattle. It's hard to believe so many were so evil but these important songs make me remember that pain that was placed upon African peoples was very real and still affects them today. Thank you for making these songs something available to us today. I feel music is a wonderful way to bridge distances and help us learn important lessons about the past and present.

I agree, very moving and haunting, of a time that should never have been, yes never forget, but also see how much things have changed. Not saying it's all perfect, nothing ever is but to not acknowledge the advancements cheapens the trials, pain and sacrifice of those who made those changes happen. I state this respectfully.
Some will be offended, it was not my intent. but some will be any way, it is merely to state an opinion. If I can't do that, than true equality will NEVER be.

@Gormm, I'm not a historical expert but even I can see that you are quite ignorant of the complexity of human development. Your little essay is full of absolute statements that reduce the complexity of hundred of cultures under one label. And to suggest that IQ is a differentiating factor between peoples of different skin colours is grossly ignorant and show a staggering misunderstanding about how such things can be objectively measured. Education leads to development of nations and to achieve that nations need resources and power. Historically that power has come by taking from others. To the most ruthless went the spoils and the benefits flowed.

Jesus this is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, and I've been a musician for over four decades. Not *just* all of the weight of the issues that inform the song, but absolutely unflinching defiance with which the artist infuses and inflames it. Not even "you won't break me," but I dare you to think you could possibly come close.
I've fallen into the habit of saying "I don't live on that planet" when people try to weigh me down with petty nonsense and drama and ego-driven competition for petty material and social rewards.
This is the planet I live on. Check out the version from the Colbert show where it's just her, a banjo, and what looks to be a native drum accompanying. There just aren't words for that, man.
