Julie, oh Julie
Won't you run?
'Cause I see down yonder, the soldiers have come
Julie, oh Julie
Can't you see?
Them devils have come to take you far from me
Mistress, oh mistress
I won't run
'Cause I see down yonder, the soldiers have come
Mistress, oh mistress
I do see
And I'll stay right here 'til they come for me
Julie, oh Julie
You won't go
Leave this house and all you know
Julie, oh Julie
Don't leave here
Leave us, who love you, and all you hold dear
Mistress, oh mistress
I will go
Leave this house and all I know
Mistress, oh mistress
I will leave here
With what family I've got left, they're all I hold dear
Julie, oh Julie
Won't you lie?
If they find that trunk of gold by my side
Julie, oh Julie
You tell them men
That that trunk of gold is yours, my friend
Mistress, oh mistress
I won't lie
If they find that trunk of gold by your side
Mistress, oh mistress
That trunk of gold
Is what you got when my children you sold
Mistress, oh mistress
Don't you cry
The price of stayin' here is too high
Mistress, oh mistress
I wish you well
But in leavin' here, I'm leavin' hell
As an American History teacher this song is so powerful. A song during the Civil War and love it how Julie is waiting to be freed by the Federals plus to tell them about the box of gold. Love this song
That passion and anger in her voice is unmistakable. A classic Giddens track.
you need like an array of grammy's already..
She has Grammy's with her group chocolate drops
This song gives me the shivers. I'm actually going to use it in my African-American History class because it tells so much more than just a story can tell (and believe me, I try my damnedest to tell the stories)
Same here.
Tell your students about Marie Joseph Angelique; 1748?' burned what is now Montreal. Giddens is amazing. When I grow up I want to be just like her.
@@BahamaWynters Ooo! Thank you! I need to check her out. I love learning about these new-to-me bad-asses! :)
I come back and listen to this every few months. The story puts a lump in my throat every single time. Also, Rhiannon's performance blows me away every time.
THE intensity of this voice is penetrating and lasting- wonderful.
Each new song, I ponder whether Rhiannon Giddens can get more amazing, gain more depth as an artist, a musician - and each time she answers "yes". Uniquely brilliant, rare and deep. TImeless and completely honest in her performances.
Yes, her wayfaring stranger is the best I've heard. The intensity and grace in her voice grab my soul.
Yes. I frequently just repeat that song.
Just happened to see her on craft in America singing this song and had to find out who she was, simply amazing. I very rarely am wowed but she has definitely made an impression. You've got a new fan, bravo.
I love this music! I just found your music through the article about you, in Smithsonian Magazine! This music speaks to my soul. Good juju, indeed!
OMG😱.. Who is this woman??
now this is good music
bumped into this track by chance but i will never regret it!!!
wooooooow
Archie Stryder you need to hear her sing Water Boy. Now that's wow
Wow.. check out her version of Wayfaing Stranger .. what talent!
I saw her do this on UNC TV and it made me weep. The truth of the song, the framing of that truth in such powerful lyrics, and the simple but really tasteful banjo and fiddle are the makings of a true classic. I now have a Rhiannon playlist with just about everything she has done. Absolutely love Angel City, String of Pearls, and Birmingham Sunday. Rhiannon, if you ever see this, "Would you marry me!" :)
She's married and has two children.
@@Canopus68 Nevertheless,
This music is fucking amazing. I can not believe how incredible this makes my brain feel! Reminds me a tiny bit of some Otis Taylor- Everyone go check him out too! An old guy singing like no other. But this young woman is just wild!!!
such a fantastic voice pure talent
just listened to this cd this afternoon. I love her music.
Raw talent
Magnificent. A God given talent..very stirring lyrics.
Thanks to Red Dead Redemption 2 make me discover Rhiannon .beautiful voice, awsome talent, true artist 🎨
Did Rhiannon ever played for Red Dead Redemption 2 ? Which song ?
@@giggsbest2891 She apparently played on the second track "Moonlight" when you google the soundtrack
spread the word
voice so pure
heart of gold
hear me wail
Miss Giddens, thank you for your voice. God given, it touches and hurts my soul. I’m white and I accept Gods decision to make me so. I also accept His decision to allow me to choose. I have chosen.
Saudações do Brasil! Seu trabalho é muito bom! Parabéns!
those last few lines though
I am in love with this woman
Haunting...powerful
You remind me of a girl that i once knew 35 years ago when i was in kindergarden. Her name was Samia. She was pretty and smart. Love this song! God bless!
It is a sad point that this story is not as defined by skin but the power of slavers who relish the ability to play god over those who have no power. This Lady is a gift to music world & the souls of the compassionate Souls who want equality to thrive even if it misses the reality that all races have abused each other & it is the Devil's work in the doing.
1898 and not much has changed ,, heart felt ,deep, SO ARTISTIC
I love this song! Greetings from Brazil. É baseada numa história real de uma escravizada. Amei
Beautiful
Descubrí esta canción mientras leía Absalón Absalón, de William Faulkner. Ahora no puedo separar una experiencia de la otra.
love this song
Конечно лайв в сто раз круче ,душевной что ли?
Funny the word Mistress, a title, also called the teacher in an older language. In boarding school, including Native American, I wonder seriously if there is a common untold bond or realization to children to the song, in older days, maybe they didn't die in boarding school, maybe trafficked as currently, statistics, of missing, missing students, children, college age, parents-pta. In other words, maybe there is a tie, there was for my untold mine.
❤️🌄
She's a fantastic solo artist but has anybody heard her with Carolina Chocolate Drops? I knew them before I discovered her as solo
melody...another appalachian song...willie oh willie...im scared of your ways...
Most of the old americana songs derive their melodies from African, Scottish and Irish melodies and rhythms.
Banjo tabs ? Chords ?!
It's near-ish to C-minor. Been working on an arrangement on Celtic harp, and it falls in there somewhere. Hope this helps! 🎶
Who says time travel is impossible?
Reminds me a lot of mongol music
On speed 2x is the best.
Prefer video ofher singing, but it's ALL GOOD>

this song is about the end of slavery isnt't it ?
I believe it is about slavery.
It's is based on a story in a book about the civil war from the point of view of the slaves. Can't remember the name of the book. The soldiers are coming to free the slaves and probably loot the plantation.
@@Ritde77 the book is called the slave's war...
