- The Metal Virus is finally over, but the show must go on. Evan Stanley takes over as the new head writer for IDW Sonic, and we're going to take a look at her first story! Chao races and puppet girls galore.
"WOW, I'm super gross! Let's keep going!" absolutely killed me. It's so hard to tell when there's something scripted or completely ad libbed which makes these videos fun on repeat.
I’m actually surprised he didn’t talk about Rouge being Under Starline control from what I can tell was All Night. He kidnap her and she came back in the Morning.

This issue makes me REALLY think that Vanilla is secretly a badass, like before Cream was born she was an adventurer but has since settled down into a domestic life. Vanilla is unique in that she's the only canonical parental figure in the games, and it's fun to see a bunch of teen heroes who laugh while fighting armies of robots and taking down dictators break into flop sweat at the thought of losing her approval.
It's been my headcanon for awhile now that Vanilla used to be a Hero when she was a kid/teen, but then she -took an arrow to the knee- grew up and decided to retire/settle down. There has to be SOME reason she terrifies heroes who go toe-to-toe with the worst. Just like Cream in the Advance games, Vanilla may be the most OP character in the franchise but refuses to show it. Yet they all know, deep down. And, Vector likes a lady who can kick his a$$.

The weird thing is that Sonic Channel’s depictions in there fourkoma and Shadow’s own short story are more in line with how he’s suppose to be characterized.
Edit: At least when it comes to the Japanese side of the series.
I do like how they show how Shadow does have a pretty big heart for kids.
He cared for cream more than the other 2, he felt absolute disgust and anger when he noticed the Chao and handing an Apple to a Chao... they're trying to push him in a better direction.
I really think if shadow learned a lot of lessons in empathy and teamwork because of that baby chao... I would love that.

I think that's what made everyone so made about that popcorn-steal gag from the Racing short. Shadow protecting innocents should absolutely never be mucked with, you can get away with just about everything else but that.

According to Twitter Takeover, which is about as cannon as the comics (which is to say, not really), Shadow is raising a dark chao.

From what i can tell Evan writing is for the More relaxed and not to Crazy Sonic Adventures Story and Ian will be coming in for his Big Events Sonic story. Ian is now like Sonic Idw Epic Event Writer like how Dc and Marvel Comics had Giant Events that would change their universe ever so slightly.

36:07 I'm surprised Sonic fans forgot that in SA2 in order to get a Chao to look like a character, they have to essentially be exclusively raised by that character. So, this basically pseudo confirms that Shadow the Edge-boi himself, did indeed care for a Chao, to the point where it evolved to his likeness. Which is the funniest shit I've seen from him!
Edit: I'm wrong about the character exclusivity part. I guess it was just me that did that, plus the Chaos Drives bit. Lol
I think that's a really clever way to subtly convey Shadow's softer side, and I love it.
This also implies that NIGHTS exists in the IDW universe
There are a few more background gags later on that show Shadow caring for that specific Chao. I wonder if it will get a name…

I remember I actually used to chat with the writer of this comic back when they were a humble Sonic webcomic artist on Deviantart. We didn't talk a whole bunch, but I remember she was *super* insistent on telling awesome stories with the Sonic cast, which I always thought was super admirable.
I'm beyond happy for her that she's been able to make that passion of hers come to life, these comics are truly a work of love from dedicated Sonic fans who see these characters for the amazing crew that they are.
So cool you got to talk with a major Sonic creator before they became major.

Honestly, Starline's characterization is just getting better and better as a villain and the introduction of Clutch as a new IDW Sonic villain might be interesting
Oh yes, Dr Starline is a fun new villain. He has some similarities to Robotnnick\eggman but better longer term analytics, usually. I do think his ego gets ahead though given a particular issue he knows the solution to in the Imposter Syndrome.
But that's a story for another time..

It's interesting how transferring notes between writers makes all the difference between characters
It feels to me like the writers are trying to get the "old Shadow" back. They keep treating this incarnation as if he's the same character who's just lost his memory and personality, but they care so much about him to the point where they will take care of him until he finds his true self again.
The writers don't care about him.
I'll be honest, I get what you're saying but I actually like the slower pace, gives everything a chance to breathe and show everyone having their moments.
And yeah, I don't blame Ian and Evan for Shadow; SEGA's mandates are just hamstringing them to an unfortunate degree.
I think Clutch could end up being the IDW-Sonic-verse's Jabba the Hutt stand-in for when the story needs non-villain criminal underworld stuff.

I really love how Tails is written by Stanley here. He's kind, empathetic, and smart, choosing to trust someone that he has every reason not to because it's the kind thing to do, and is basically exactly the character that made me a fan of the franchise in the first place, as opposed to how he's been written lately in the games.
I also loved the very concept of Cream on a heist mission. Her admonishing Rouge for lying had me laughing hysterically when I read it.
I like Shadow being less edgy for once. That Chao is so his.
To me one of the Perks for Team Dark working for G.u.n is that basically if Omega needed to restock his Ammo or needed Repairs G.u.n and their team would provide it. But now that they are gone is Omega going to have to constantly come to Tails the minute something bad happens to him. Seem kind of like an Inconvenience on Omega writing. What about Maintenance Check up. Dont tell rouge and Shadow can do that.
My guess is that after the War G.U.N. has been rendered defunct
@Slate of Fate The war didn't take place on Earth it took place in Sonic world. Meaning that G.u.n is still Around in their world it just that Team Dark decided to switch worlds to pursue Eggman but i guess also decided to no longer have any communication with G.u.n at all.

If We have to analyze, Evan has a potencial to create new concepts for the IDW series, by drawing or just writing. Evan comic is beyond amazing, and you can see the evolution on the art style by reading the first chapters, indeed amazing how she improved and she deserved to be at IDW. I prefer that she go by doing “less detailed” (not disparage) story just to test the terrain, i am pretty sure that by the time she writes more, we will see how creative (more than she already is) Evan is! Also these stories are good to get to know old and new characters ( tangle and whispers series, the new camping ones where they reference to Amy knowledge on tarot, since sonic cd or adventure we haven’t heard of Amy's abilities with cards!)

The bit about "Starline set up the rollercoaster and avalanche because he love these classic villain stuff" kinda bug me because in the Metal Virus arc he specifically call out Eggman for his tendency to drag out the song and dance, after setting up a no bullshit trap to try and kill Sonic and Silver.
So yeah, this "extra" stunt make it feel like he is becoming more Eggman.
I feel like in the original arc (team dark only), he set this up because he wanted Shadow's attention and to get his dna sample. Shadow's dna makes more sense for Surge and Kit than Tails.
I think Starline genuinely admired Eggman's showmanship, he just felt there wasn't too much substance under all those theatrics.

You’re forgetting that Starline did that to distract Sonic so that he could get away. He didn’t just do that for fun, it was an essential part of his plan.
Shadow had a shadow chao with him for three years in a row in the Sonic channel drawings between 2013-2015, I like to think its a reference to that.
With how Vanilla is portrayed in these comics compared to how she was prior, just this motherly figure that's shockingly okay with Cream going out on these dangerous adventures with her friends kinda makes me think what Vanilla used to do/be before she became a mother. And what terrifies me is the thought of her being Sonic the Hedgehog version of Retsu Unohana (A.K.A the first Kenpachi) from Bleach. A woman that's sweet on the surface but is actually a combat demonic entity when pushed to that point.

We already know of Creme and Cheese's destructive power. She had to get it somewhere...
If Clutch were to show up again I think he would team up with Rough and Tumble, they would make great muscle/henchmen/enforcers for him and his criminal operations, and he in turn could provide them with weapons/gear as well as jobs that pay quite well. Plus Clutch's fighting style compliments their own, with Rough's speed and Tumble's strength fighting head on with Clutch providing covering fire with his cane gun they'd make a frighting trio. Possible team name for them could be: Team Crime, that's my idea anyway.
I really like that idea, and yeah you're right all the pieces line up! I'd honestly be surprised if that partnership isn't shown off in a future issue!

Even tough I don't like Evan's writing as much as Ian's, this is the kind of more relaxing story we needed after the metal virus arc.

I love this IDW series, but man I gotta say that Shadow is really just a pointless element. But then honestly I think thats the thing with Shadow now, he's like this cool character that has no purpose, plan or meaning, but continues to show up simply because he's the popular edge-lord character that sorta drags anything he's attached to down with him, like Infinite is a perfect example of that.
I just noticed too that Lanolin (the sheep girl) appears again at the resort just before the avalanche. She just can't get a break anywhere she goes can she XD
Agreed he is just pointless fanservice that despite being the "ultimate lifeform" actually hinders the plot almost every time he appears lol! No wonder Ian Flynn had to immediately write off Shadow out of the Metal Virus arc ASAP (Ian himself wasn't even "allowed" to at least make Shadow go out like a hero unlike Tangle or Vector).
At least other comparable characters have plot devices to keep them from falling into the same fanservice pitfall as Shadow. Knux needs to stay on Angel Island to guard the Master Emerald, Blaze has a whole kingdom in another dimension to rule over and Silver is from a completely different time period.
Wrong, shadow was supposedly to grow to be more like a hero, take a look back at adventure era and you will know what i mean, also he is not supposed to be edge lord, i hated that term to be put in his character
It's not even just that he has bad characterisation, but because Sega and Sonic Team seem dead-set to work with the really dumb retcon of "oh well sonic's world has no humans but eggman", which is in blatant contradiction to SA1-2-06-Unleashed, they also really, really like to just completely ignore the fact that Shadow is A) over 50 and B) experienced trauma. He may have dealt with the bulk of the trauma in Shadow the Hedgehog but that doesn't mean his personality as an anti-hero would shift dramatically.
Sonic 06 handled post-Shadow Shadow perfectly personality-wise; a brooding figure who will protect the world even if it turns against him, because he will respect Maria's wishes, no matter what. This is who he is.
They've basically turned him into DBZ era Vegeta where he just breaks shit for little to no reason. :/
Basically, yh. He only appears because he's popular; Sega has no real plans for him moving forward. I mean, that makes sense, since he wasn't supposed to come back after SA2 anyway, and was originally meant to be sealed in 06, which is also where his character arc ended.

I think it's confirmed that because Eggman was so afraid of Omega betraying him, that he didn't put an animal inside of him after what happened with gamma, opting in to use a chaos drive or something instead
I don't give a damn what anyone thinks. I like the OC characters in IDW-Sonic… actually a lot more than most of the OCs from the Archie comics I grew up with (Penders can go to hell for owning Amy's cousin and… G. St John in general). Particularly, I'm partial to Belle - I'm a sucker for depressed robots thanks to also growing up reading Douglas Adams (RIP). Yes, everyone wants the 1993 Freedom Fighters back but it ain't happening, sadly.
Shadow saying he’s “Not interested” would actually fit for Shadow going on a separate adventure or mission.
I grew up with Shadow being my favourite character, and, honestly, as the mandates are right now, this situation really sucks.
I feel so bad for the writers for having their creative intuition stamped on like this, and I'm glad that there is a large community of people that recognise it isn't their fault for these blunders.
Frankly, I'm of the radical opinion that you can't really fix Shadow now.
They've made him ridiculously out of character. Unless they straight up soft reboot him (which just isn't happening) he's going to forever have to live with this characterisation.
I think having him "learn" from these flaws he never even used to have is an absolute insult to him as a character, and I'd honestly rather Shadow continue to be an asshole, than them play that "aww he has a heart" bullshit, against a character who's ALWAYS had a heart.
They could just bullshit something about him having relapses to his PTSD about Maria, and even if he can handle it most of the time, it gets harder whenever the ARK passes over wherever the hell the comic takes place, and with the Metal Virus being around he couldn't go to brood someplace else like he always does, so he's been in a shit mood all month, or something.
It's not a _fix,_ but it would at least give us something.

Maybe it's just because the main games have starved us for good content for a while but I can't get over how great and consistent the quality of these comics are. The character writing and interactions are near perfect, the art and expressions are so pretty and diverse and they manage to add tons of fan service without it ever feeling shoehorned or nostalgia baiting. I really hope the games will be allowed to be like this one day, we want to see lots of the characters again, we like unique team-ups, dynamic stories and villain's that aren't just Eggman.

Let's just say Belle has VERY strong feelings about that whole situation and, uh, Evan puts her cute OC through hell. With the most recent issues featuring her, Belle has become a very depressed robot.

Dr. Starline had Clutch's business card at the start so he was probably there initially to see what Eggman tech Clutch had to either make a deal for some of it and or find an possible ally/business partner in Clutch. Or failing that, hypnotize Clutch to get what he wanted out of him. Hypnotizing Rouge to set up that trap for Sonic and Tails probably only happened because he saw an opportunity when the girls showed up at Winter Chateau and decided to take it.
I always assumed Starline had the same business card Clutch gave to Rouge, and it just fell off during the fight.

That scene at the end of this arc with Vanilla and the other girls was hilarious. It makes me, more than anything, want Vanilla to pull an 'Unohana Face' at some point (or whatever the name for that style of character is) It would probably be pretty scary, but it would look great on her. I'm sure Evan can pull it off the best out of all the writers they have right now.
13:04 I can imagine an 8fps cartoon animation of Shadow right here, looking back up from down, and looks to the right without necessarily turning his head. That animation just popped into my head when I saw his silhouette. Probably with either Centaur World or Legend or Korra animated fight scenes with him too.

i like how the chateau plot follows what was team rose in the original draft for sonic heroes (amy, cream and rouge, basically a female version of team sonic)
We just gonna ignore the Chaos Soda advertising with Shadow? God, I love this art so much!
One of the things I enjoyed the most about this arc was the interactions, in particular between the Rouge, Amy, Cream, Omega and Cheese. It is something I crave to have more of. Varied interactions between different combinations of characters. Having Rouge be the older, slick talking, mysterious one of the group contrasting Cream's innocence, strong desire to help, and naivety are things that make for neat moments.
This is something I definitely appreciate the comics for and do wish it would happen more often in the games. I also love the setting. I think White Park is neat and having there be an cozy snow resort and the ladies in their Sonic Channel snow outfits is again details that I really do think is awesome.
The slower pace I am fine with and having and the little Easter eggs are always nice. I'm not too hot on Belle, however. She's a bit of a mixed bag to me, yet I am fine with her sticking around. Oh boy and Shadow... I'm not necessarily upset with having mandates, but when they keep making a character feel out of character it's noticeable and I'm not sure what exactly is trying to be done here.
I won't try to break down what I understand Shadow's character to be and how the IDW comics make him feel foreign, as that would make this comment way longer than it already is, which if I am gonna be this long winded might as well start making videos of my own lol. I enjoyed this story despite the shortcomings and appreciate you Nick for going over it with us.
Don't worry, for that Shadow part, I will;
Shadow was a darker, more mature character in the cast who had a soft spot for people.
His SA2 arc helped him come to terms with Maria's death and what his responsibilities were. His Heroes arc helped him come to terms with who he was and what he was fighting for. As unnecessary as it was, the 2005 game repeated those same arcs too for good measure.
By the mid 2000's, Shadow was a well-rounded hero who wanted to do right by other people. He was an introvert, oftentimes rude and dismissive, but he had no problems opening up to people close to him, and he was so secure about his status as the 'Ultimate Life Form' that he'd call Sonic the 'Ultimate Life Form' in SA2, and felt no need to brandish his strength.
IDW effectively stripped his medals from him.
Gone were the developments he made to respect humanity - humanity does not exist.
Gone were the developments he made to respect others - he had to be BEGGED to save townsfolk.
Gone were the developments he made with Team Dark - Team Dark is a 'business'.
Gone were his friendly dynamics with the cast - he's now an asshole who attacks and looks down on everyone.
Gone were all of his chemistries with everyone he interacted with - he has no friends.
Gone were all semblances of his relatability that made him so interesting - he supposedly likes 'nothing'.
They proceeded to go further and strip him of his humanity, his nobility and his benevolence, which just made him unlikeable.

I always wondered about which of the mainstay Eggman robots are/aren't powered by animals. Like, Metal Sonic probably isn't because the robots introduced in CD were all powered by flowers for some reason but then you have the Hard-Boiled Heavies who are all upgraded Eggrobos.
I think it's that Eggman himself goes through phases in design philosophy. From animals, to flowers in CD because of their power and convenience, back to animals, then to alternate power sources (I think the Emerald battery shards like we see in Adventure 2? Never remember what those are called) as a more secretive power source to build up VAST armies. He acknowledges the use for each, but as we've seen and heard from the old horse himself, does not dwell on them and ping-pongs between them depending on what plan he's cooking up.

@@RotaAbyssian The chaos drives in SA2 weren't used by Eggman. They were found in the G.U.N. robots. Eggman's still dispensed animals.

@@RotaAbyssian Egg Pawns no. There weren't animals inside badniks during Heroes and they weren't in 3d games again until Lost World I think. I do agree with the point you made that Eggman is very resourceful and he seems like he would use the chaos drives too but I guess he thinks they're of more use upgrading chao abilities.
We think the idea with Clutch being knocked out and not being tie up is that Gemerl is supposed to watch him if he woke up and then knock him out again.
They weren't planning on knocking him out in the first place, usually the bad guys are the ones tying people up
One thing I absolutely love is how well Evan writes and utilizes characters like Amy and Rouge. I feel she does a better job characterizing them and making use of their unique elements.
Shadow I feel has had a harder time moving forward then the others when it comes to everything that's happened so far. From the war(Sonic Forces), to letting Sonic talk him out of destroying Eggman back in Windmill village, and getting infected/turned into a Zombot during the metal virus outbreak Shadow's pride(as the Ultimate life-form) has taken quite a few losses/blows by this point. His frustration is understandable but taking it out on others who don't deserve it isn't. Shadow either needs a big win in the future to restore his confidence or open up and talk to someone about these things so he doesn't continue to bottle them up inside.
Imagine if Starline beats him up in the rematch.
I don't even feel like this is an arc he should have had in the first place though.
It's like if Iron-Man became a depraved serial killer at the end of Civil War; that goes against his character, and it makes no sense from a story-writing perspective.
Shadow suddenly turning on all of his friends and becoming a right douche-bag is just weird to me, and it ruins my reading experience.
@@hihi-nm3uy Yeah probably, they should've saved Shadow for when Eggman was the main threat/focus again. Or give him, Rouge, and Omega their own mini series to sort out those issues.

Really liked this story arc, Sonic and Tails interactions while exploring was really cute, Belle has a cool design and the interactions btween Rouge and the others is great and genuinely made me laugh.
The Amy car is a reference to Sonic and sega all stars racing. Also Amy's outfit is similar to winter games

While I was initially kinda "huh" when I started reading this mini arc. I did like, as you said, getting to see some characters away from Sonic and enjoy the world expansion.

@@ShibuNub3305 Penders doesn't own the term "Mobius". It was coined during production of _Adventures,_ long before he came on-board the Archie comic. Or earlier. Just like Penders doesn't own the core Freedom Fighters because they were created by the SatAM writers/designers and maybe Mike Gallagher at Archie at Sega's request. What Penders _does_ own thanks to that BS lawsuit is *_all_* of the Knuckles E.U. + random side characters.

Gallagher didn't have anything to do with their creation, although he did basically establish their early characterizations in the comics, especially since the comics started before a lot of the TV designs and characterizations were finalized (hence why Sally uses her design from the pilot at first).
The fact that amy has actual techniques to track sonic is setting off so many alarms that shouldve been sounding off since heroes...
I honestly couldnt thank you enough for doing this series. Ive always wanted to get into the sonic comics but reading itself is really difficult for me so these are absolutely amazing for background noise when doing other stuff. Really appriciate it ^^

Yep, Shadow not have a well characterization, the thing could be better, handle. Like the small conversation in the road with Rouge, i could be done in a way that make us think Shadow trust her to take care of it while he continue with his business, rather of not care at all.
PD: i think this is the fault of Sega, the moment that made him fell out are only a few panels that can be fixed changing the dialogue or changing some of them. What implied the opposite maybe they where changed for Sega intervention. Like the "don't tell me what to do" it could be more in character if Shadow said "we can't let him go", and the following dialogue of Rouge continue working without any alterations.

I enjoy watching these after I read the comics. There’s a lot of things I miss when I just read the comics that get pointed out or explained in these videos. Like I don’t think I realized that Starline was the one in the hallway. I also liked these issues, lots of great stuff in them, great art and writing. Also the amount of Easter eggs is great.

I do agree that the soft reboots for every character in the sonic universe was in fact, half and half, the only ones I think deserved the reboot would be, amy, cream and cheese, the chaotix, silver, knuckles, blaze, and probably omega, the rest honestly did not deserve the injustice Sega gave them, although shadow is more prideful now, and I don't think the world is ready for a vegeta clone that acts and thinks like vegeta.

I think a cool moment that could've happened with Sonic and Tails trapped in the Eggman base with the kamikaze bots after Belle saves Tails: Sonic gets fed up and does the light speed attack to bop up all the robots in an instant before flying out with Tails and Belle for the base to explode behind them. Similar to that opening pre-rendered scene with Sonic in 06.
Shadow will beat up a Chao abuser and is visibly horrified at Chao abuse. but he won’t stop a avalanche that would then kill them.
Shadow’s has the personality of a drunk homeless person crossing a road at night.

Don't know if this is canon or not, but once I heard of "chaos drives" as an alternative power source for many of the modern robots, including Omega.
The business card Shadow was holding... did I miss something explaining your laughter, or did you forget the card he gave Rouge?
Though reading the series first is generally a must, you always seem to catch little details I'd miss! Shadow's Shoes, the *tinkering* line, the CD Pose (excellent use), the original Omega plan, the darn floor, there's just so much making these great!
Personally, I really liked the expressions when the dam fails (along with the others). Shadow's is milder, this version of him a bit more detached and more disappointed his plan failed, while Sonic is genuinely scared, worried for those inside.
Clutch is my favorite new villain in IDW! Both cunning and mysterious, definitely someone to keep an eye on, especially in the recent issues at the time I write this. Also Shadow having a soft spot for Chao is the best!
I honestly hope these interesting comic characters like Tangle, Whisper, Belle, etc end up in the games

I'd say that the reason that starline didn't run off with tales after he kidnapped him is because if he did, sonic and co would go searching for him, and would inevitably find him and thwart his overall goal. But if Sonic and the others thought that they had thwarted starline's plans they would just leave him alone.

But his original intention was to just kidnap Tails flat out. That being the case, just leaving before anyone realized it was him would have given him much more time considering that Eggman, among others, could be culprits behind kidnapping Sonic's best friend.
