There is one thing about this issue that answered a question I had for a long time. WAAAAY back when Sonic Heroes first came out in the Team Rose story we were introduced to this brown chao that we were told was Cheese's brother named Chocola, and we never see him again. Who was Chocola and why did we never see him again even though Cream DID appear in several games after that? THIS issued finally explains it, Chocola is Vanilla's chao partner the same way Cheese is Cream's. Just as we have a "Cream Cheese" pun with that iconic duo we also have Vanilla and Chocolate. This also fuels my theory that Vanilla is a retired adventurer who used to travel the globe kicking all sorts of ass with her chao partner chocola, but settled down when she got pregnant with her daughter. That would explain why Vanilla can be so intimidating, even to a group of heroes who have battled gods and averted apocalypses (I'm not even joking, you've read the comic, you've SEEN Amy and Rouge TREMBLE at the very idea that Vanilla might be even slightly upset with them, I'm pretty sure Vanilla can make Shadow sit down and eat his veggies.)

"And don't touch any shiny metal people unless you want to be transformed into one of those weird silver street performers" I've been on the internet long enough to know there's a not-insignificant number of people who'd do that deliberately.
This arc just makes me want Ian Flynn to write the games more. I’d argue that this is some of his best work and maybe One of the best stories in the Sonic franchise Can’t wait to see more of it in the future.
Honestly, the Metal Virus Arc is so horribly long and terribly paced. Sorry to say but Flynn can't write good stories and if he did, he's extremely picky about it. I came from the Archie Sonic crowd who tried to give the IDW comics a chance and I can't see how the current comic run would be able to be saved unless there is a changeup. Fun fact: This arc was gonna be in the Archie Sonic run before that was cancelled. Glad that wasn't the case.
@@runezunn6655 I think the virus was too soon and too extreme. There’s also no real damage because the chaos emeralds end up destroying it and everyone is back to normal, no long term consequences afterwards. Also Eggman almost destroyed the world intentionally with no real regret for it, that’s just straight evil and Shadow is justified in wanting him dead now that he’s not mr. tinker. Eggman was tricked into almost destroying the world during Adventure 2, and Shadow sacrificed himself to stop the plan he was carrying out. Edit: During the credits, Eggman even speaks to Tails about looking up to his Grandfather and questions if he really wanted to destroy the planet. Look up that ending credits cutscene.
@@boombirdking2118 Exactly. I get the point of putting stakes in a storyline but this arc was simply too much. It was one disaster stacked on top of another into one huge angst fest. In this very arc, Dr. Eggman acted incredibly evil for what? I mean, while he is an antagonist, in his core, people know that he is not that flipping heartless. This Metal Virus in itself essentially threatens to wipe out potential future generations of Mobians along with other plant-life and so forth. He essentially makes it known that there will be no future had the virus haven't been rid of completely. If anything, this seriously is like legit Eggman Nega-levels of villainy, no lies about that.
Honestly, I don’t think Charmy‘s behavior was out of character at all. It maybe would have been if it wasn’t motivated by saving a specific person and even then you could probably argue that he doesn’t quite understand just how quickly the virus spreads. He‘s five years old and not exactly the kind of kid to 100% do what his elders tell him to do.
I would disagree with you on that one mostly because Charmy did show more awareness about the dangers of such a situation and staying goal orientated in both Shadow and Forces (aka the 2 wars are poor Bee already had to go through)
@@vectorfan2 See your argument comes in it self with one rather large problem and that is that you ascribe the knowledge to Charmy that he knows the GUN Solders can take care of them self (even through its pretty clear in the story and even during many stages that GUN is losing a lot of troupes in this war) yet your argument for Charmy's action requires him to be dumb enough to not realize that anyone that got infected just got them self a Game Over as it will completely consume the infected person in a small amount of time. I properly would have been less annoyed at it if Charmy was generally looking for survives that he could fly out only for the Metal Flicky from the previous issue to get him. BUT him not understanding that someone infected it lost is just to much given the level of understanding Charmy did show in Shadow. And beside that did I list Forces as well for a reason that being that this action of Charmy relies on him wanting to save everyone even if it puts him at massive risk but which such an attitude would he during Forces have to confront Infinite sooner of latter during the 6 months as he in the Avatars flashback clearly saw that Infinite had no issues with blowing up civilians. (and I suppose its only fair for me to mention that I also come at this not entirely unbiased as the writer Ian Flynn did show during his run at the Archie Sonic comics similar problems writing for the Kid Characters that aren't Tails with a good Charmy example being that during the reboot era Charmy was written to be really scarred of Ghost despite him having no such fear in Heroes (and its not that Characters can't be afraid of ghost but unlike Tails and Marine is Charmy not suppose to be scared by them)) Also I would love to talk about how Vector in issue 22 just like everything else in issue 22 after the end of Cream and Amy's talk was badly written but as you don't want to spoil anything for anyone stumbling over this comment will I not go about that here because I can't really address it without spoiling almost the entire issue.
@@vectorfan2 Well you put it quite nicely and I also enjoy Charmy's writing in Shadow. But all of this beings me back to my problem with the Comic it was TO DUMB of a thing for Charmy to do as it was even with what little we have of him clearly shown that he would understand the situation and act less idiotic about it.
How are GUN and Infinite comparable to the Metal Virus? Neither of those are threats entirely comprised of former civilians, nor are they particularly hard to understand like a virus is. Hanging back from them is a pretty clear-cut way to avoid the issue and isn’t going to fill the kid with guilt at having to consciously leave behind innocent people. Guilt which, mind you, consistently overrides logic for informed adults on a daily basis. It doesn’t necessarily matter whether Charmy is levelheaded under normal circumstances, because the Metal Virus is far from a normal circumstance. Whatever you think of Charmy, he has never been in a situation this stressful or complicated in this continuity and is clearly not equipped for it. That naturally leads people to make mistakes they wouldn’t otherwise. Also, I’d like to point out that we never actually see Vector share everything he heard from Tails with Charmy and Espio, just a few basic snippets of information. Meaning that Charmy was missing a *lot* of crucial knowledge. It’s entirely plausible that he just didn’t realize how quickly the virus took over, that it couldn’t be cured by conventional means, so on and so forth. (He also saw an infected Sonic getting along just fine, but going that deep into it just feels like semantics at that point).
So this title finally motivated me to go read all the IDW Sonic comics starting from issue 1 in a weekend, then binge all of this in an evening. These comics are *SO* rad. Thanks for the motivation, Nick.
Damn, your having 0 tolerance for Charmy’s childish naivety in this arc. Honestly I didn’t mind it for some odd reason. Maybe because I found his weird reasoning for wanting to save as much people as possible somewhat justifiable here in a way.
18:07 Can we appreciate that, I know its NOT supposed to be blood, but, the splatter of red above cream as shes screaming we can't leave them Looks a lot like god damn blood splattering.
I still think that a zombotification meter would be an amazing addition to a sonic game, especially to an 2d or adventure style. Just imagine it stays in the far south left part of the screen, slowly building it up to 100% and every time you run it gets lower, but also, every time you hit a zombot it gets 0,009% faster, and you cannot stop it from going faster, because if you don't stop the zombots, your friends get transformed, and if you stop all of them, the next level is gonna be way harder. Of corse there could be a shop where you can buy from idk, tails maybe, some special rings that slow it by 1 or 2% Its never enough to keep you or the infection at bay, but its gonna be way easier way to deal with, just so it doesn't becomes impossible
I actually don’t think Charmy was outta character- People seem to forget he’s just a kid with the best of intentions and ofc any little kid like that won’t think through there actions- So I normally cut him a break
Even though I didn't appreciate that little "Karen" thing you pulled, to show no hard feelings I will tell you that the scene with the two fire starters ( 16:56 ) are OCs created by people from Venezuela that were going through some hard times. They asked Tracey Yardley to add their characters to the comic, and she did, hence this scene. Basically this is the first time a fan-made OC was ever featured in Sonic Comic history.
@Karen Bonds, now if they would only add in the Archie and Fleetway characters, I would be happy because they made the vast majority of Sonic lore, like it or not.
@@paxhumana2015 they legally can't is the problem, look up the ken penders lawsuit it explains why so much shit from Archie and even the main games got cut in the 2010s
Ah, Charmy and the Chaos. It's intersting that they picked those two because really, they're some of the worst characters to get infected. A zombie thay can fly is more dangerous than one that cannot. Also poor Charmy, the kid has his gulit eat at him and then gets basically mawlled.
Did you know that the zombot perspective in cover b is the frist zombot that team chaotix meets and is the zombot that appears everywhere in the book even after espio trapped it the zombot was even both fighting Vector and espio at the docks and was infecting charmy at the same time well it just followed charmy then went back to espio and Vector
Yep but that's the metal virus we lost so many even a rookie I think I know this is horrorfing but I want to see zombot rookie from the trailer which I think is main rookie and see an infinite and rookie mini series that then goes to the main story
12:00 Not sure if it was intentional, but that was really clever putting that forshadowing while you zoom in on Charmy making a very familiar face and very familiar color pallete to a very familiar character.
Personally I like to think of it as Sonic's 10 minute timer whenever you sit in one place for 10 minutes or you spend too long in the level you'll become a zombot. That's my idea anyways
16:20 the GBA Sonic Advance 3 actually shows a picture of Tails restoring Gemeral so that knowledge is absolutely canon, except Sega never thought about making a cameo of him ever. Even Blaze visited Cream's house yet no sign of Gemeral in the DS ever. It was such a missed opportunity.
Look on the bright-side at least Gemerl didn't appear in Sonic Chronicles (as originally planned by Bioware) he might've ended up like poor Shade... :/
@@HedgehogY2K True but at least Gemerl still has a chance of reappearing in future Sonic games (even if its just a brief cameo) and IDW brought him back to relevance. Meanwhile Shade has next to no chance of appearing in ANY future Sonic media thanks to Ken Penders.
@@HedgehogY2K The problem he#s getting at is that the moment Sega uses Shade or any of the Nocturnes clan again can Ken Penders sue Sega again for "stealing" concepts he created for the Archie Sonic Comics (he can't right now because a Judge told him so after his last attempt) and so its often believed that in order to avoid another lawsuit (even if it properly would end badly for ken again) these characters became rendered unusable.
6:57 This lady was acting like a normal human being in denial about their own demise. She is scared, she is upset, she doesn’t want to die, and as of right now, being infected is basically synonymous with death. She’s not being a Karen. Not wanting to be alone when you die and having a panic attack when you realize people are going to leave you behind because of it is not a Karen trait. It is a human one. Is she putting people in danger? Yes, but that’s most likely due to the fact she might not have realized she was infected until someone pointed it out. After all, who wants to die alone? I certainly wouldn’t.
Originally, I thought the concept of a "metal virus" was dumb, but now I'm kinda interested in the IDW comic. I've always liked Ian Flynn's work, it's just the SEGA mandates that got me disinterested.
Agreed, I get Sega don't want another Ken Penders situation but going from one extreme (unsupervised creative control with Ken's fanfics) to another (corporate mandates that keep harassing the writers) is kinda ridiculous tbh.
I remember hearing somewhere that even though the zombots don't eat or dismember their victims, the process of turning is extremely painful. If that's true then YIKES.
Fun fact: they had an concept to include Blaze as the one who can put away the virus for good (flames -> high temperature -> disintegrates molecular bacteria and viruses and all that weird science) but at the expense of killing the infected as well. So Metal Virus Saga would've been MUCH darker if Sonic, Blaze and the survivors had to face moral dilemma of killing a handful to save the rest of the world, and the consequences of un/justified (?) murder. A total rated M comic series no longer for the intended audience we have now.
Cream telling Gemerl not to hurt the zombots reminded me so much of John Connor telling the T-800 not to kill that guy at the cyberdyne systems building in Terminator 2, if that was intentional good on the writers referencing a very good movie
Ohhh boy. Shadow's the elephant in the room when it comes to these comics, I can't wait for you to talk about him because honestly? They massacred our boy.
This sonic arc was the only time the sonic comics have ever filled me with genuine fear And then it justified that fear and converted all my favourite characters into metal, simultaneously loading six shotgun shells into my heart
Yay, nick finally got a sponsor, you made it man! Congrats! And about Ian Flynn, when you said that his writing is far from perfect you were right, I mean charmy and cream didn't have to go through this trauma. Damn.
Smart Idea what if the time limit was how sonic died. For an example if you didn't complete the game in 10 minutes and you have 0 lives left you get a bad ending where Sonic turns into a zombot .

Cream is to Sonic as Maria was to Shadow.
I love how you keep calling Vector and Espio Charmy’s ‘Reptile Daddies’.
My hero
@@runezunn6655 , what if it was not Dr. Eggman, but, instead, it was Dr. Robotnik posing as Dr. Eggman?
Honestly, I don’t think Charmy‘s behavior was out of character at all. It maybe would have been if it wasn’t motivated by saving a specific person and even then you could probably argue that he doesn’t quite understand just how quickly the virus spreads. He‘s five years old and not exactly the kind of kid to 100% do what his elders tell him to do.
I would disagree with you on that one mostly because Charmy did show more awareness about the dangers of such a situation and staying goal orientated in both Shadow and Forces (aka the 2 wars are poor Bee already had to go through)
@@vectorfan2
See your argument comes in it self with one rather large problem and that is that you ascribe the knowledge to Charmy that he knows the GUN Solders can take care of them self (even through its pretty clear in the story and even during many stages that GUN is losing a lot of troupes in this war) yet your argument for Charmy's action requires him to be dumb enough to not realize that anyone that got infected just got them self a Game Over as it will completely consume the infected person in a small amount of time.
(and I suppose its only fair for me to mention that I also come at this not entirely unbiased as the writer Ian Flynn did show during his run at the Archie Sonic comics similar problems writing for the Kid Characters that aren't Tails with a good Charmy example being that during the reboot era Charmy was written to be really scarred of Ghost despite him having no such fear in Heroes (and its not that Characters can't be afraid of ghost but unlike Tails and Marine is Charmy not suppose to be scared by them))
Also I would love to talk about how Vector in issue 22 just like everything else in issue 22 after the end of Cream and Amy's talk was badly written but as you don't want to spoil anything for anyone stumbling over this comment will I not go about that here because I can't really address it without spoiling almost the entire issue.
IDW had me weak bro.Shit was *insert Italian kiss* AMAZINGGGGG.(Really hope they keep up the good work)🥴

Wow you're first sponsor! You've grown so much! You've went from green game man to funny green game man with sponsors!
So this title finally motivated me to go read all the IDW Sonic comics starting from issue 1 in a weekend, then binge all of this in an evening. These comics are *SO* rad. Thanks for the motivation, Nick.

Can we appreciate that, I know its NOT supposed to be blood, but, the splatter of red above cream as shes screaming we can't leave them
Looks a lot like god damn blood splattering.
I like how Chaos Angel act 1 was used for Cream’s intro in this video!
Of corse there could be a shop where you can buy from idk, tails maybe, some special rings that slow it by 1 or 2%
Its never enough to keep you or the infection at bay, but its gonna be way easier way to deal with, just so it doesn't becomes impossible
If done right that could be a cool game mechanic
I actually don’t think Charmy was outta character-
People seem to forget he’s just a kid with the best of intentions and ofc any little kid like that won’t think through there actions-
So I normally cut him a break
It's been two whole voice casts since we've seen the Chaotixs in there agency
This series has to be a game

The panel of cream being carried away, screaming for cheese and chocola is certainly not going to be forgotten.
Remember kids, this was supposed to be an Archie story. And they chose to bring it to IDW with all the more innocent characters.
That's actually really interesting!
@Karen Bonds, now if they would only add in the Archie and Fleetway characters, I would be happy because they made the vast majority of Sonic lore, like it or not.
Damn dude that's really cool. Thank you for the info!
@@paxhumana2015 they legally can't is the problem, look up the ken penders lawsuit it explains why so much shit from Archie and even the main games got cut in the 2010s
I mean, he's technically not wrong about the Karen thing. Seems like you get offended.
Imagine the amount of therapy the entire Sonic universe will need
Ah, Charmy and the Chaos. It's intersting that they picked those two because really, they're some of the worst characters to get infected. A zombie thay can fly is more dangerous than one that cannot. Also poor Charmy, the kid has his gulit eat at him and then gets basically mawlled.
Ian Made it dark, knowing that they will be ok in the end.
Yep but that's the metal virus we lost so many even a rookie I think I know this is horrorfing but I want to see zombot rookie from the trailer which I think is main rookie and see an infinite and rookie mini series that then goes to the main story
holy crap, I loved the Battle for Angel Island, but this is just on a whole 'nother level

12:00 Not sure if it was intentional, but that was really clever putting that forshadowing while you zoom in on Charmy making a very familiar face and very familiar color pallete to a very familiar character.
Breaks my heart a million times seeing Cream in that situation, but I'm impressed at what a strong character she's become.
Personally I like to think of it as Sonic's 10 minute timer whenever you sit in one place for 10 minutes or you spend too long in the level you'll become a zombot. That's my idea anyways
Look at our little boy doing a sponsor segment! Im so proud of him!
Ah yes. My favorite conflict in storytelling.
Traumatizing characters.
Espio: what do we do?
Vector: *H O N K*
Hahahaha, you're gonna cover THAT issue next and I cannot wait.
@@lynxfresh5214 Oh yes, like that changes falling into no show obscurity. Both Gemeral and Shade never to appear in another game.
@@lynxfresh5214 Uh, you do know the archie comics aren't the same canon as the games right?
@@HedgehogY2K The problem he#s getting at is that the moment Sega uses Shade or any of the Nocturnes clan again can Ken Penders sue Sega again for "stealing" concepts he created for the Archie Sonic Comics (he can't right now because a Judge told him so after his last attempt) and so its often believed that in order to avoid another lawsuit (even if it properly would end badly for ken again) these characters became rendered unusable.

This lady was acting like a normal human being in denial about their own demise.

This just made me realize something- in theory wouldn't the metal virus be able to infect Chaos? (since they're a Chao).
If Charmy is now infected, does that mean that the metal virus is now officially "airborne"? Too soon?
Imagine Charmy's freakin baby voice screaming "CHOKE ON MY GUTS! CHOKE ON 'EM!"

This is the type of vibe I was actually expecting from Sonic Forces when the trailer aired. Obviously my expectations were way too high 🤣
It also seems like Charmy's Sonic's designated character that they just keep around to make suffer.
Smart Idea what if the time limit was how sonic died. For an example if you didn't complete the game in 10 minutes and you have 0 lives left you get a bad ending where Sonic turns into a zombot .
