  • Join us for a day of French chateau life - the kitchen is a hive of activity, as Mummy bakes apple pie and Marie makes a delicious sausage wrapped in brioche. Meanwhile I make a start at reupholstering an antique bed, Selmar shows me the beautiful spade handles he made with our old Christmas tree, and the sheep outwit us once again. Then, in the evening we all enjoy the most idyllic aperitif imaginable on the terrace of the chateau...
The Chateau Diaries Episode 118 ✨🏰✨
Escape to the chateau with ’The Chateau Diaries’ 🏰
This channel follows the adventures of chatelaine Stephanie in her French 16th century home, the Chateau de Lalande, in the heart of rural France ❤️
We show you what life is like in an ancient chateau in the heart of the French lockdown, and the creative crafts and activities that we’re turning to, to make the most of this period of enforced relaxation.
A very special thank you to all of you who have become Patrons of the Chateau de Lalande. As you can imagine, your help means more to me now than ever. Because of you, I'll be able to keep living at Lalande and making videos even though our chambres d'hotes income has been decimated by the coronavirus. I’ve been overwhelmed by your kindness and generosity, On behalf of this beautiful chateau that will continue to survive and flourish because of you, thank you!!!

This is a suggestion for herding sheep. First, get some sheep feed. Something like rolled or crushed oats, barley or corn with molasses mixed in. Every day, feed them a little. Train them to eat out of your hand. Don't give them too much as too much rich food can give them a stomach ache. When you get ready to feed them, put the feed in a bucket, stand up-wind from the sheep and make sure they can smell the feed. Stir the feed around with your hand, if you must, to help the air carry the scent better. As soon as one sheep gets near, grab him (her). Have someone push the sheep while another person pulls the sheep in to the next pasture, or carry it. Another suggestion; your sheep look small enough to easily lead. Place one hand under their chin, another on their rump and point their head the direction you want them to go. It would be nice to have a sheep halter to help guide the sheep. Perhaps you could make one? Is the male sheep (Aloysius?) the leader of the flock? If you can nabb him first, the others may follow a little easier. Another suggestion, get big pieces of cloth and tie it to stick, like a flag, or a bull fighter's cape (or whatever you call it). As you are chasing the sheep, hold the clothes up so that the sheep thinks it is a big wall. They will more than likely run away from a wall that is advancing toward them. And, don't try to chase the sheep towards other people. For example, your mother could hide behind the big gate posts next to the bridge, your volunteer could hide behind the corner of the house, etc. Don't let the sheep see you until they start to go in the wrong direction, then guide them, step out so they will see you and run the other way. This is probably more that you ever wanted to know but, there it is. Good luck!

I have seen several comments about you making a Lalande cookbook - what a great idea for raising funds!! You could just collect recipes, that have been featured in the videos, and for the future, leave a book in the kitchen, like a guestbook, so that visiting chefs can add a recipe, for something that they have prepared in the kitchen, and with all the international guests, it will make a very interesting and versatile cookbook 😁 And then pictures from the chateau, and the guests enjoing themselves - fantastic. Another way to contribute to the ongoing renovations 😃

Having grown up with sheep, it astounds me how much energy you have to put into moving them every time. The trick is really simple, actually:
Collect kitchen scraps, such as coffee grains, fruit peels, old bread and all things growing out of the earth in a recognizeable bucket that you bring out to the sheep when it is more than half full. Spread out in a stripe, so all get a taste.
Keep doing that regularly, and soon the sheep will come running to you every time they see you with a bucket. Then save up scraps for a full bucket and just walk ahead of them to where you want them to go.
    Easy peasy, and ecological!
On a different note: Is it not illegal, or at least extremely rude, for a château not to be well stocked with all kinds of wine at all times?

Another hilarious installment.....and for a minute I thought Mummy was going to try a sheep catching method that had crossed my mind. Maybe the reverse of what you've tried, instead of The Mighty A, would it be possible to catch one of the females and lead her to the other pasture? .... hoping Aloysius would follow.... Fun days ahead.
Selmar, love the timber handles... and the way too cute Diesel is a carbon copy of my late Grandmother's dog, Tiny - way back in the 60's
What wonderful subscribers you have, sending such thoughtful and special gifts. I hope Antoine received his Lego. 💖

@@selmarduinofficial Thank you Selmar, he's beautiful, I don't know what my Nan's dog was, a it of a mix! I have 2 English Cocker Spaniels that rule the house!
I know what you mean by the feel of wood, it's beautiful to touch, my late Father and his family had a timber mill in country NSW Australia. They milled cypress pine and the smell....was beautiful, Dad was a cabinet maker by trade, but could do anything, he built the house I still live in and he was always fixing something,so lots of great memories from my childhood. I'm sure you'll enjoy your time at la Lande.

In my pre-quarantine life I coached children in a gym and I really miss seeing all their smiles and hearing the excitement in their voices as they told me about the tooth fairy's arrival or dressing up for World Book Day etc. so it really cheered me up to see the sheer delight on Antoine's face when he received his Easter treats. I've spent the last 6 weeks in my own company and would give anything to be sat around a table with family and friends (Champagne would be a very welcomed added bonus 😁) Thank you for giving me the next best thing by sharing your happy gatherings for aperitifs and parcel openings. Stay safe and hope the sheep start playing ball soon 😀🇮🇪

And Salmar, you can really see the thought and care put into your work even on something as simple and everyday as shovel handles. It is so nice to see everyone's joy and genuine gratitude when opening gifts - it truly brought a smile to my face and brightened up the morning today. It's so much fun to see all the activities going on, and to take part in the opening of the packages filled with wonderful gifts for everyone! And Selmar, the shovel handles are true works of art! What an amazing and creative thing to do with old Christmas trees! They could also be used for basketry handles, planting poles for beans etc. to climb, and many other things! I love Selmar's vest. He looks like he's just stepped out of a Renaissance painting. Bone-jour, Diesel!
    Merci beaucoups et À Bientot!

I had a couple thoughts. First, for merchandise. It would be wonderful if you could take photos of your mother's beautiful tapestry needle point and your father's beautiful Unicorn painting, and send to one of the photography places that turns photos into shoulder bags, aprons, fabrics, etc., it would be fantastic to have some merchandise to sell for LaLande with those beautiful works.
Second, sheep. If you have one person go into the field, open a bag of potato chips/crisps etc. and eat a couple, the sheep might be tempted by the treat and come follow the person into the new area. Also, the more people out there, the less likely they will be to go to the area you wish them to go to. So just 2 or 3 people max. One crisp bag holder, 2 much further away to direct them into the proper location. Bon Chance!
