  • The formation of metallic silver from the reduction of silver(I) ions complexed with ammonia is demonstrated using glucose as the reducing agent. Metallic silver deposits on the inner surface of the transparent glass vessel employed, giving rise to a uniform and highly reflective mirror. The reaction is used in qualitative organic chemistry to identify aldehydes (Tollens' test).
