  • Driving lessons. Don't give up, you are not alone. Everybody goes through little dips in their driving lessons. What you need to do is pick yourself up and look at the mistakes and work on them with your driving instructor. The end result is you getting to that standard of driving so you can pass the UK driving test and be safe on the roads alone.

@1.8vtec I switched instructors after a long process. Couldn't get any money back because you make an agreement for the lessons that you sign up for. The new instructor was lovely he made me feel sure and safe. Failed my first exam because I was way too nervous. Had my second exam a week ago and picked my license up yesterday. A good instructor who thinks, along with the problems you face, is worth more than 100 lessons.

I've gone through 4 different instructors, 2 from a school who weren't teaching me properly, and 2 privates who were being far too picky. Apparently I don't check my mirrors that often, I stare blankly ahead without observing, I indicate too late and early, I break too harshly or not enough, I don't plan ahead, I drift too much to the left and right in my lane and I've had enough of it, it's not worth the stress, I'd rather say I tried and failed rather than continue pointlessly throwing my money down the drain and make myself look desperate. I'll stick to public transport where I can be drove around by someone rather than deal with trying to get my own vehicle (officially from this day hate the word "car").

Try reminding yourself why you want to pass. Is it to improve job prospects or to get to college etc. Most people go through this stage. When in the car next just focus on a couple of areas to see if you can improve them, knowing that every bit that you can improve will help you pass the test.

I had my first lesson with a lady instructor. It was alright but she was always unavailable when I want to have a lesson with her. Then, I had a lesson with a second instructor, but a horrible guy. I was doing so well, but then he started hollering at me to drive properly on the public road and I had to go back on the quiet road. However, I didn't had enough cash to pay for my lesson again and I told him that I'll have to do next week again. But, I didn't bother going to him again, until the time when it was February 2023. I had a lesson again with a third instructor, but he's is one of the most difficult driving instructors ever. He puts me under pressure for three weeks straight and I just almost feel like giving up. Thanks for your motivation to not give up on driving.

This happens to experienced drivers too, sometimes you can be driving along and just make silly errors such as clipping the kurb when parking, losing concentration and getting in the wrong lane at a roundabout or the occasional stall (hopefully nothing serious or dangerous). It's just all part of being a human being I suppose.

I got my license 2 weeks ago but nearly got in a car accident today. I was planning to switch lanes and it was clear but I didn’t check my blind spot and noticed a car right next to my right side and swerved back in my lane and the cars ahead were stopped and I quickly stepped on the break to slow down and once the car on my right passed I changed lanes. I’m still young and make mistakes as failure is bound to happen and the best thing you can do is learn and always check your blind spots, look over your shoulder and take extra precautions. Then after that learn to drive too be honest I just can't be asked really to be fair I prefer to work for company jobs rather than me being self employed jobs

My driving instructor gave up on me. I took 10hrs of driving and he said you are unteachable. Some people just cannot drive and you are one of them. I do have anixety and he just gave up on me. He said it from lesson 2 that I am a bad student and cannot learn driving. I don’t have any issues with other areas of my life, however i have never even ridden a bicycle before. After my instructor gave up on me I have lost that little confidence that I had as well. But your video did make me feel a bit better.

Hi Travis. I have been learning to drive for just over two years. At the start I thought I'd never even be test ready. Admittedly, it took a considerably longer number of lessons than you may expect before I booked that first test for March 2019.
I failed the March one because two lanes merged into one and I didn't check the right door mirror and examiner had to put hand on steering wheel.
Second test was supposed to be May 2019 but got cancelled 4 days before. Therefore, I had the second one in June 2019. I made a total mess of it.
The third one was on the first day of uni this year in September. I went into it thinking it's the perfect time to get it done. I did not feel myself crumbling in the waiting room like previous tests. I went out there and thought I had a brilliant test. All the stupid things I worry about (hills, roundabouts, getting observations spot on, manoeuvres etc) I had no problem with. I pulled into the test centre at the end thinking there was a chance I'd done it, unlike the previous two. When the examiner told me I failed that one because of one serious it hurt like hell. She said don't beat yourself up because that's not tough to fix.
I had my fourth test on Friday afternoon and failed it by some distance.
There is no danger of me giving up. I just think I have a problem of thinking myself into a corner when the test is approaching. I feel the apprehension coming on days and weeks before the test. People say try calmers but they don't stop you overthinking it all.
The thing that really takes it out of me is knowing I have to wait 12-16 weeks for another attempt. The waiting lists in my area are that long. I am signed up to a cancellation site but don't always get the opportunity.
I think passing the driving test has become an unhealthy obsession for me. 😩🙏
I watch some of your videos on test tips when my test is approaching. I sometimes have to tell myself not to watch any videos too though because I'll just start overthinking. 😂 I joke with family saying you know the test is approaching when I'm watching this guy's videos. 😂😂
It hurts so much but the only thing I can do is to keep going. I do have breaks from lessons in between because of the long waiting lists and for my own sanity tbf. I know the only real failure is giving up on something.

That happens a lot. What you need to do is write down the mistakes and when they happened( either towards the end of test or earlier).
Then meet up with your instructor and work on the mistakes, also look at rebooking your test.
If the mistakes happened towards the last 15 minutes, then that could be tiredness, if this is the case, take a shorter lesson before your next test.

    • @raraa9377
      @raraa9377 5 лет назад

Learn-to-drive Travis the first 2 serious faults happened within the first 10-15 minutes of the test and the second 2 occurred just before I reached the test centre.😢 I think I just need loads more practise and to calm the hell down lol. It wasn’t even a hard test or difficult route. Just my nerves got the best of me.

Looks like an excellent website, many thanks for sharing that with me. Rest assured I'm not walking away without considering the various options. What I would say is that I've long had spatial awareness issues that are not confined to driving, precisely because they pre-date my efforts to learn to drive. Moreover, I suspect I may have some form of anxiety disorder, as I was always very nervous, especially at roundabouts. Just as some people are no good at maths or no good at drawing, I'm no good at driving. Just how it is. I think it is fair to say that some people are just not meant to be drivers.

It's easy for you to say this from the top looking down. I have wasted 70+ hours and over 3 grand and I have absolutely nothing to show for it. I can't remember how to do any of the manoeuvres. They just don't stick in my head. I know what I'm meant to do theoretically, but practically, I make the same mistakes over and over again in every aspect of the road. If I correct one thing, another thing falls out of place. It's easy for someone in your position to say not to give up, but I think some people like me maybe just aren't cut out for this and should actually be told to give up rather than to waste further time and money on a fruitless endeavour.

What should be happening now is the person who is teaching you needs to prompt and ask you in advance before it happens, so you think about your mirrors and handbrake. If they are leaving you to keep repeating the same mistakes, then that is wrong.

I've never been this clumsy before!!!! One after another just mistakes and mistakes... the kind of movements I never did even in my very first lessons... am exactly at the middle of the process...I had my 15-16th "attempts" 🤭 yesterday and 30 is when they send us to the test here in Hungary (580km)
However, he took me to a very steep hill and on the top of it we have to give yield so he said : clutch on the biting point, right foot above the brake and there it was, engine cut off... when I restarted I didn't hear where the biting point was and moved my other foot onto the gas too early and we rolled a lot!!! 1m or so. 4x. It scared me away...if I do it at the lights I defo bump into the car behind me... at green I have to do it quick and it results in stalling.
My instructor is getting more tense and inpatient with me in every lesson and am losing my mood and enthusiasm...
I wanna do it right, I wanna learn ... but somehow different or with someone else... he is my second instructor because last summer I went through the same negative experience and left the first one and took a long break from it... nearly a year ...
Maybe I'm just not suitable for this...mentally weak, hypersensitive or something...
However, I cancelled my next lesson... this is how I strongly feel and I can't imagine what would need to happen to change this in me until Friday...

Sometimes this will happen where you know you were better at something and it just goes wrong.

BE HONEST TRAVIS, WOULD YOU STILL TELL ME, DON'T GIVE UP, IF I HAVE HAD NOT OVER 45 HOURS OF LESSONS SPANNING OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS, WITH SEVERAL CHANGES OF INSTRUCTORS, SPENT HUNDREDS, TRIED LESSONS AT VARIOUS TIMES OF DAY, AND IN DIFFERENT WEATHER CONDITIONS, AND GENUINELY PUT IN MY BEST EFFORT?

I can tell you some facts that might help:
The older you get the more driving lessons it takes to reach the standard to take and pass the driving test.
Most people reach the standard to take the driving test between 40 to 50 hours of continuous weekly driving lessons.
Some people reach that standard in less than 40 hours and some can take a lot longer.
It can feel frustrating when it takes a long time. I would set yourself two goals at the start of each lesson to achieve with your instructor. At the end of the lesson review your goals.

Cyclists on roads should have to wear high visibility, they blend in, they can go inappropriate speeds, they undertake, they sit in blind spots, they swerve, they are extremely vulnerable, they are a constant obstruction and car drivers are the liable ones if a collision occurs - it's the least they should do.
