I'm a 40 year old who's been a gamer since Atari 2600. SOTN is in my top 10 video games OF ALL TIME.
41, same
@@matthewkuhl79 39 same lol
28 but can i join the gang?
Yup agree SOTN top 10 and castlevania 4 also the best two in the series in my opinion .
Me too man, 37 here and it will always be a top 10, somewhere near ghouls and Ghosts :)
I played through it for the first time last month, took about 15 days and it was one of the best games I've EVER played. To say it holds up is an understatement! It's timeless!
I agree. It is amazing
If you have time, play through it again, inverted castle if you haven't already. The game is LOADED with secrets and secrets within secrets. There is so much to find, I still find a few hidden items and weapons to this day.
@@HumorousLOL Of course I've already played the inverted castle. It's not really "finishing the game" if you end it at Richter lol
@@megmoore8681 my queen
It also looks absolutely stunning!
I’ve probably played this game once a year since I got it in ‘97. Never gets old
I've played it all the way through 3 times during quarantine, one of them is a 200.6% file with all items. I still have the original PS1 black disc version, bought it new in 97! This is the best video game of all time in my book, an absolute masterpiece.
It is great for sure. A classic
I bought this on the 360 (as an arcade offering), and didn’t really like it. I wasn’t a Castlevania fan at all growing up. Cut to 2020, I broke out the 360 after like 6 years of not playing it, and this title was still on my hard drive. So I downloaded it, got frustrated with how often I was dying, and put it away again. The first of October came (2 months ago!), and I tried it for a THIRD time, and powered through the parts that I hated, and fell in love. Like you, I was kind of like “there has to be more” after I fought Richter. I went to the little chamber thing and two transports happened. One I transported to the reverse castle, and two, my soul transported out of my body for the next 7-8 hours, as I mindlessly played one of the best adventures I had, in quite some time. You’re video was excellent.
Thank you so much for the kind words and sharing your story with the game. I am glad you also ended up enjoying it. I appreciate you taking the time to share your experience!!
Please keep up the great work! Take care.
@@YourGFsFavoriteBF thanks. You too!
You keep on dying? but this game isn't even that hard..lol
@@karlluigi1987 It’s probably not hard for you because you’ve never played it before, tho.
I consider this game as art
I don't blame you
Every game is art 🤦♂️
@@MikeUK66 there’s always gotta be that one guy 🙄
@@MikeUK66 is fifa art?
@@y0av359 Did artist make it? Answer: yes.
I did find it suspicious that the game was so short, especially after raving reviews. I went back after about a week of finishing the normal game and tested many things until I discovered the clock secret and was able to finish it for real
Its a great feeling for sure
Have you looked much into the various special features of swords, and the rare swords? The enemies that bleed when you kill them help level up the Muramasa. There's also the Rune Sword, that you can only really get when you've taken effort to stack your luck, and then boost it some more. I remember spending hours in the same room, trying to get that one. The Heaven Sword is also quite fun. Even more fun if you grind for two of them and set them for dual hand. This game has more "bonus features" that what was reasonable, back in the day. I'm looking forward to playing it again.
Short answer: "YES."
Slightly longer answer: "HELL YES."
I first played this game in the afternoons over about a 2-week span in the summer of 1998, after having spent each morning in that timeframe rehearsing with my high school's marching band out on the hot blacktop parking lot. (Later that autumn, our marching show placed 2nd in our state's Regional competition... almost good enough to go to State!)
My favorite part, which for me also invokes the most nostalgia, is the normal castle's watery Underground Caverns section. When "Crystal Teardrops" kicks in with that slow rock/jazz fusion and the harpsichord-sounding keyboard... Perfection.
I listen to crystal caverns on my Spotify playlist still lol
For as important and influential as this game is, it seems oddly... unpopular? You have plenty of older games like Super Mario 64, Mario World, or the original Pokemon games that sorta naturally are still popular due to the big names attatched to them. You have other older games like EarthBound, which emassed a cult following, ended up inspiring a whole slew of influential RPGs like Undertale, and sorta ended up growing larger in popularity as time passed. You have modern Metroidvanias like Hollow Knight that have just completely eclipsed SotN in popularity. Even Metroid has seen a bit of a resurgence thanks to Dread. I suppose some of this is due to the fact that Konami is run by a bunch of monkeys on typewriters, and we're probably never gonna get a new Castlevania game from them ever again, but it's not like there's just no way to play SotN. It's sorta like Calvin and Hobbes or Monty Python: very popular, very influential, very universally loved, hold up incredibly well for the most part, yet you never hear anything about it. Everyone just sorta accepts them as good and move on, and that makes me sad
Great game. Still holds up, came out when 3D games were all the rage. A pioneer of sorts
This a classic, it will always hold up.
I agree. It is great. Thanks for watching!
my favorite moment was randomly getting the Crisaegram near the end of my playthrough and then ending every single boss's career
Just had a crazy urge to play this a few weeks ago. For me, it always holds up. This was my first castlevania game on ps1. Soundtrack is also amazing.
My first time playing SotN was the PSP version that was included with Dracula X Chronicles. It had different voice work, alternate dialogue and there's a boss fight with Maria before you get the item to encounter Richter. Early on, I was so blown away by the game at the graphics and overall look of the game. SotN is a very immersive game and I feel the atmosphere is not talked about enough. After so long, you feel like you're living in the game. My favorite part was exploring the caverns underground for the first time. The music is so strong there, you really do get this feeling that you're really there in the moment and exploring these caves.
If you grew up a Vania fan, this games was tight when it was new in 90s
And it still is. I play it every year around this time it’s like a ritual at this point
Well I play this game at least once every year so Yes I think it holds up pretty well
I played this game relentlessly when it first came out ..one of the best games ever made.
Play it on CRT. 240p. The way it was meant to be played.
It's the ONLY way to play it in my book.
Playing it 2021 for the first time on a vita it’s amazing 😻
I was a year old when this game released. My mom wasn’t a gamer, but she played 4 games: Pac-Man, Tetris, Contra, & CastleVania:SOTN
I have distinct memories playing this game as a small child.
I Just bought it on the PS store, can’t wait to have my legit first playthrough of this game :-).
That is an awesome story. I am glad you are able to play it now. Enjoy it!
My favorite boss battle was also sypha, trevor, and grant, and just everything in the game checks all the boxes for me in what I look for in a game. I never get tired of playing this game, and typically play through it once every year around Halloween
Dam Nintendo took a fat ass L afterwards 😭 them n64 castlevania games are disgraceful 😭!
So I first met the franchise not because of any game or some fan of it, I mean back in my 11 yr age my neighbour played this game probably in loud volume so I could hear the game soundtrack from my apartment - we have never met each other and I never heard about Castlevania before - and most of the darkest and memorable songs were stuck in my head until now, including Requiem for the Gods and I Am the Wind, but... Once I never gave a shit about Castlevania, this ost was always a mystery that I hadn't mind about.
So, curiosities aside, the time passed until I was 15 years old, when I had been on vacation, I was silly when I read in some article that Adi Shankar was interested in adapting Devil May Cry, associating with Castlevania. At the time I thought "hmm, why not check this out?". I watched and fuck what an amazing 1st season this was (at the time of season 2 yet). I didn't show much interest in the rest of the series and I dropped in the middle of S2. By the end of the year I decided to binge the 2nd, I was in the hype for S3, that time I've played a bunch of classicvanias (all easily emulated), so... The year was 2020, I was afraid of what ended up happening, yk what I mean, and by that time, I started watching S3 in all my hype. This was a very tough time in my personal life, somethings went like a mess and I hadn't rationalize this season very well, but I liked it the most, it was mfing crazy! Then I emulated PS1 in my phone and the first game was this well known and inspiring game called Castlevania Symphony of the Night. The rest is story.
My brother and I never got along... except the one night we jammed through Symphony of the Night.
I bought this game the day it came out from electronics boutique, took it home and “beat” the game in 7 hours. I was disappointed and this was back when you could return a game for store credit so I traded it back the next day for something else. Bout a week later I found out about the upside down castle and went back and rebought it. I’ve beat the game about 20 times since then and it’s one of my go to comfort games that I can just turn my brain off and plow through.
That is so awesome. Such great memories. It is always good to have a game like that where you can just go back and really enjoy it from beginning to end. Thanks for sharing!
Same experience as you , i played it in 2019 and it's one of the best games ive ever played in my life , the gameplay is just too fluid and the respect for the player is present. The music, the atmosphere it is incredible.
I'm 38 and it's my all time favorite game and my top 3 is s.o.t.n. Skyrim, and ghost of Tsushima
I loved all the transformation. And secrets moves you had to discover on your own
You can also play as Maria the most modern versions.
I didn't play this growing I didn't get into this game until a few years ago. I couldn't get into metroidvanias when I was tried Super Metroid and Metroid Prime and didn't like them. However in 2017 I finally got into these games I liked Super Metroid so much that I went back and played all the games.
Got into Symphony Of The Night and I can say this game holds up remarkly this is one of the few games I replayed immediately after I beat the controls, all the cool weapons, and the hidden magic spells adds so much replay value.Using the Crissaegrim and Hellfire spell is so fun to use.
Symphony Of The Night is easily the best 2D Adventure/Platforming games I have ever played and I have been playing these types of games since the SNES/NES and this game just gets everything right combat is fun, exploration isn't too cumbersome.
I agree. That was a great synopsis. Thanks for sharing your opinion and posting this comment. I appreciate it!!
You nailed it here. Me and my friends would spend our allowances or money on games from the newly opened EB games (Electronics Boutique), and like yourself trade games back and forth among ourselves, titles like, Suikoden, Xenogears, Castlevania as mentioned above. I am shocked that Castlevania SOTN had those kind of reviews, UNBELIEVABLE! It was a great game as a kid, I remember sitting on my living room floor Indian style, with my dual shock controller and fresh mega memory card, I remember being blown away at how fluid this game played, I loved the level designs and it in some ways felt like a modern "Ghouls and Ghosts" or "Super Ghouls and Ghosts" great game btw. My favorite part of the whole game was playing thru again in the upside down castle, always getting new weapons, gear, and ability's. This is a diamond in the rough, great game, and great video thank you for this. +1000000000000000 and subscribed
The OST being fucking fire sure helps it.
I feel that in this game the bosses are too vulnerable and easy to defeat, even if you use magic or the most broken sword there should be parts of these fights that require more skill
Wow, glad you finally got to it. This was a real gem, even today!
Yeah, this game is pretty well ageless and very much defined the final form of what people call "Metroidvania". Its influence on games that followed cannot be understated.
I found that magazine comparison between Symphony of the Night vs that 3D 64-bit thing that nobody remembers absolutely hilarious. Thanks for that.
I’m 35 and SOTN is in my top 3 favorite games of all time. Very nostalgic for me.
One of my memory from this game is putting it in a CD player and listening to the secret music track!
It did.
But later Igavanias gave quality of life improvements that are hard to live without. Using items from the menu(though I see the appeal of real time healing), arching weapons, Loudoun slots to switch between, replacing subweapons w/hundreds of unique abilities that work well for an exploration-focused game, optional side quests, better post-game areas/inverted castle equivalents, less clunky implementation of movement abilities like the high jump and more. SOTN is what it is though and it's magical. I recommend playing Aria of Sorrow, Order of Ecclesia and Bloodstained to see some of these big improvements (the other GBA and DS games are great too and all wicked unique from each other).
9:32 my dude throwing holy water on a levitating boss 😩😳
It definitely holds up and is best played with emulators because Konami won't give you any other way to play it in full screen without annoying borders. Most of the voice acting is a bit derpy but there isn't much voice acting and the opening "What is a man" exchange is actually pretty awesome.
I don't know who else can relate to me on this, but Symphony dropped at pretty much the same time Golden Eye did on N64. I was in the dorm at school, and everyone else was play Golden Eye multiplayer while I was much more interested in Symphony. While Golden Eye was and is an amazing game in its own right, Symphony was just sublime. There was literally nothing like it. And despite the person in the video saying that it felt like a Super NES game, those of us at the time knew better and saw the immediate upgrades via the PS1 hardware. Such a great game and experience🙂
One of my favorite games ever!
My favorite part of it was farming the rare drops and gold. Then buying the duplicator, get the Crissaegrim (X2), leveling up your familiars, etc. It turns into a huge game if you want to get into completion mode, yet its fun along the way. Been playing it since it came out and still have to run through it about once a year. Along with Super Metroid😁
I had no trouble beating SotN thanks to a Tips & Tricks magazine issue I had since I was a kid. I bought my used copy of the game in 2004, well after it was released, fired up my PS1, and played it. This was around the time I graduated from high school; got lucky and scored a loose copy. That issue (which my mom bought me in 1997) really came in handy. I already knew not to kill Richter. I already had a good idea of where everything was thanks to T&T's strategy guide. Since then, I've kept one clear file on the memory card so I can do the 99 Luck cheat followed by the glitch to keep Death from taking all my stuff. That way, I keep the Alucard Shield and only have to hunt for the Shield Rod. Once you have those two items, the game is easy as shit. All the bosses will go down in mere seconds, including Shaft and Dracula.
It definitely still holds up, but it suffers from the same deep flaw it had upon release: it's too easy.
I've been working on an edit to the (track 1) .bin file for SOTN. Have been fine tuning it for a couple months now, making the game more difficult. This comment will actually be my first mention of it to anyone. It is compatible with the current sotn . io randomizer as well.
Edit: The current "hardtype" hack is still too easy imo, clunky where it shouldn't feel slow and too easy where it should be hard. again (imo)
Easy my ass.
I'm ashamed to say I've never played this or any Castlevania game even though I grew up in the 90s. I'll definitely have to remedy that soon.
Never too late to start! Enjoy it! Thanks for watching.
I'm hooked to this game since it was released, I'm 35 now and just beat it again, is just sooo good, or maybe I am fond of the old because the new doesn't excite me anymore..
Wait! What?! This has long been one of my favorite games. I had this back on the PlayStation. I was just checking to see if this was ever released on PC and found your video. As I'm watching I started seeing things I don't remember. I have a sick feeling I'm one of those that thought the end was at the half point you mentioned. I feel like credits rolled though. How would I have missed half the game?
I May have started with Dawn Of Sorrow as my first Castlevania that I Played back then. As I got hooked up to the series, discovered other 2 DS Titles (Portrait Of Ruin And Order Of Eclessia) and eventually Stumbled this Symphony Of The Night after even playing the Older Castlevania 1-4. Out of All The series, Symphony Of The Night Will remain the best Castlevania For Me that I eventually Felt in Love With.
The Music, The Level Designs, The Bosses, The Characters (Even Dracula is not a Pure Evil Villain in this game as shown in his final words that he still has the rationale of a human being).
Castlevania SOTN is a top 3 game of all time for me. I will go back and play it over and over again much like Final Fantasy Tactics.
I agree there for sure!
I was one of those original 60,000 on the ps1. I wish I still had both the ps1 and the game. It's still one of the 5 best games I've ever played
Very cool! I wish I had an actual copy also. I play it on a hacked PS1 Classic. Its a decent experience tho.
I just started playing it last night, I have been curious about it as of late. I couldn't get very far because I had to go to sleep but I really enjoyed what I've played so far :)
I chip modded a few ps consoles about eight years ago and started dowloading a bunch of rom.iso files.
This game was what I aimed for just because you can't buy the game for a decent price today, nor even back then.
Since then, I play the game about once every year!
This game is a true masterpiece!
The Sega Saturn version has a few added maps, so that is my next target.
Buy a Saturn, mod it and grab either the original game or get ahold of a iso file and play that version
You can grab this on IOS, if you have a PSP and the Dracula X chronicles you can work though 3 stages and unlock it. Fantastic game.
Rondo of Blood, its predecessor, is also an amazing game. I honestly prefer it to SOTN, and recommend checking it out.
For sure!
@@Gamingwithgleez Whoa, didn’t expect you to respond so fast.
@@Multienderguy37 I was actually on my phone when the notification popped up haha
Its 1 of my favorite games ever and I didn't even finish it 100%
I actually had this game pre ordered and I thought it was even better than I had expected. I remember there being a a huge push for 3D at the time and I remember even Sony themselves kinda looking down at this game at the time it came out cause it wasn’t pushing trying to be 3D. Much like that article you shared about the Nintendo 64 version. Boy were they all wrong. This is in my top 5 of all time games and I’ve played it countless times on many systems.
I replay this game every year so I would hope so!
Kinda ironic how this game looks miles better than the 3D ones the article was comparing it to, the art is just ageless.
Really like SOTN, but I much prefer classicvania. Symphony is too easy imo, but the game’s artstyle is really beautiful
I collect all the trophies on ps5 yesterday and I finished the true ending for the first time I give this game 10/10 no doubt
Awesome! Congrats and I am glad you enjoyed it
@@Gamingwithgleez man it’s a piece of art im 30 years old I don’t know how I miss it
I wish I would’ve played this BEFORE hollow knight... now other metroidvania styled games just fall short
It's pretty good but the games that come after it are better. Amazing for the time and still pretty good today.
I was late to this game as well. I first played it 2019, and I am glad for it. It brought me back to the years of my childhood with the other games that were somewhat similar. I love it and I'm about to play it again tonight. Cheers!
I'd car hop, and I came across a PS1 and it had this game sitting inside. It was months later, I was really bored and played it. Loved it since!
I grew up in the 1990's, but never played Symphony of the Night until last year! Even though I played most of the other games in the series, I never had a PlayStation growing up, so I missed out. Finally got to play the game last year through emulation and loved every second of it! It's a true masterpiece and classic! No Castlevania game since has had a soundtrack to match SOTN. The soundtrack really drew me into the game, and the game just wouldn't be the same without it!
If you think the game is amazing, imagine how amazing it was to find it hidden on the "Dracula X Chronicles" on the Sony PSP.
My personal (unpopular) opinion: The U.S. PlayStation release's original voice cast and soundtrack are better than the PSP/Android versions' watered down recasting and removal of "I Am The Wind." I still prefer to play that version over the others even though they have a Maria quest and expanded inventories, just because the original over-the-top voice acting is so much more interesting and iconic.
The original voice acting is so bad it's actually good. 😄
This games never gets older
Question, were you ever disturbed or grossed by any of the boss models? Theres actually a list of scary/gross looking bosses in Castlevania and SotN takes a good portion of the spots. Legion(Granfaloon) and Beelzebub just to name a few
4:14 I'm in that room right as you said this the perfect timing
I only started playing it June this year. It’s fantastic. I alternate between the Death Skip and Normally playing it and have done multiple playthroughs.
Did a playthrough in Luck Mode where I only collected a few health upgrades (Unavoidable ones) and no heart upgrades. I still made it through but it made the game tough to start with and that was roughly almost a month before writing this comment.
I had this back in the day but didnt get too far as I was rather young. Just bought a used copy for $80 and starting it next week.
Very cool! Enjoy it!
This was just what I was looking for. I'm 42 and haven't played this game. It comes up so often, I'm compelled to get on it. I'm a sucker for classic vamp stuff, atmosphere and music but I worry about getting frustrated by the mechanics cos they won't be as smooth as what I'm now accustomed to.
Not just one of the best castlevania, but one of the best game ever made. I dont have nostalgia goggles, found it 6 years ago alongside the castlevania frachise. Beautiful game.
My favorite part? farming Schmoo and Dodo Bird
Are you from western PA or Ohio? Maybe Baltimore? I hear that accent haha regardless, this game is so close my heart ❤️
Thanks for watching. I am from the Philly area. You are correct haha.
We need this game on the Nintendo Switch
I agree!
It was actually the Netflix Castlevania that got me into the series.
I played the saturn version of the game (in japanese), many say the game has some animation problems, but I never played the PS version of the game and had SO MUCH FUN with Akumajou Dracula X son SATURN... And I was able to finish more than 200% of the game (inverted castle he he)
It aged well because it didn't fall prey to the 3d meme
Did you get the sword that covers everything in front of Alucard with blades? This weapon makes you seem like a God.
Is the psp version any good? Was thinking of finding a copy of it and extracting the iso legally, but I've seen some comments on it. Should I just use a PS1 emulator?
The PSP version apparently is the same as the version on PS4. There is some different dialog but the game overall is the same. I played on a PS1 emulator and it worked out well for me.
@@Gamingwithgleez right, I'll see to it then! Might go for the PS1 version to experience it for the first time, then find the psp version and see what's different and such. The only thing that bothers me about the psp version is the framing of it, but it really won't be an issue. Thanks for the response!
@@simonmuscat7055 Any time!
I beat this game last year it was pretty fun never had the time to go around and beat it again tho
This game kicks f'ing a. Play it regularly on my Vita 😁
Of course it aged well. Many updated indies r using the same sprites till this day. Thank you metroid and castlevania
Very true.
I haven't played in over a decade but i think it's the bell tower?? The music gives me chills every time
I'm about to play this on my iPhone!! Alucard my favorite character 4rm this series.. wating the anime gave him a boost
I actually unlocked the inverted castle last night....the ppl that made this game are psychotic geniuses
N64 had better 3D models but could not hold a candle to the story telling shown in FMV cut scenes. That plus solid AAA titles for the time are what compelled me to stick with Playstation and have Nintendo only for first party games
Forget all the others. If you only play one CastleVania game, play Symphony of the Night. Hell, if you only ever play one VIDEO GAME, play Symphony of the Night. I got the 1998 green edition and played it too many times to count, and it's still one of the best video games ever.
If they remade this room for room with the same music and similar sound effects , with 3d version of all the bosses and creatures it would be a smash if you make UT like ghost of tsushima meets skyrim ( yes leaving souls/bloodbourne out if it) it's should be beautiful, Gothic, and fun to explore and slay Dracula creatures .. this should be a slam dunk instead they keep remaking resident evil over and over a fan for 32 years should know
really wished that they fixed the issues on the saturn version and remake that
I’m glad I was one of those 60k people who purchased this game💪🏼
I’m streaming this game right now to celebrate 500 subscribers even though trolls came in and were absolute little kids. This game is brutalizing but it also has fair punishment I love it.
Very cool! Congrats on 500 subscribers! Dont listen to the trolls. Keep up the good work and enjoy the game!
@@Gamingwithgleez Yeah I know, I just beat the doppelgänger and the game sometimes stunlockd. I’m playing this on a PS5 and the one thing I hate is magic. I feel like you need a fight stick to input the magic attacks but overall it’s fine.
Didnt have internet when I had this game. I was afraid to enter the throneroom, so I waited until I had at least 100% or close to it. There I found goggles, and well, I knew I had to have them on me to beat Richter, so I saved, took them off and beat him. "Wow, ok, bad ending huh?". Loaded instantly and had a hard time finish it. Today we all know thanks to "game logic" and the internet, holy damage was the best against him, so the unholy orb could be beaten easy and make less to no damage against holy Richter.
Ah good times. Love this game so much that I decided to try to make my own Igavania. (Yes, Igavania, not metroidvania, that term is watered down today!).
I purchased it for my PS1 after playing a demo in Best Buy.
I played this game on ppsspp during one summer when i was at my family farm where there was no internet and reliable electricity
Just finished the game a few days ago, didnt know that there was a secret ending and map if you didnt kill richter
But after getting the 2 handed katana that can constantly attack, you can literally chew out bosses in seconds
If you love symphony of the night, lookout for the remake of the game that’s coming from a fan named “The Esco” on RUclips.
