When I was a kid- and we are talking the 1950s, the road that you were traveling on to go to the Flying J was "The road". There was more or less a perfect divided highway between Gorman and Lebec, but the Five Mile Grade leaving Castaic was for a long time one lane north bound, one lane south bound...and a suicide lane down the middle. It was slow climbing and worse going down. The danger of runaway trucks was very real and a few brave drivers stayed with their rig and drove it off a cliff rather than jumping clear, thereby saving innocent lives. It wasn't until the late 1960s when the California Water Project provided millions of tons of fill dirt that I-5, as we know it today, began to take shape. The freeway has been widened and truck lanes and bypasses added, but the basic configuration hasn't changed in nearly 50 years.
This vid really brought back great memories from the early 90s for me. I loved California for the 6 months I lived out there. I drove straight trucks over the grapevine and, as a Virginia boy, was always blown away at the vastness and beauty of the West.
Nicely done. Good to see a trucking video from multiple angles. This concept seems to be lost on most RUclipsrs.
Back in the 90's when I was a kid, I would go on long hauls with my dad from South Texas to California in the summertime. My Dad as well as all other trucker referred to that climb ''The Grapevine''.
The Grapevine, had me shook back in '96 in a car at that !
i could just imagine trucking it ( and yes, Trucker, was pretty good 👍 Michelle Monaghan )
The Duel is the best trucking movie IMO.
Jack , It sure was a beautiful day up the Grapevine with my favorite driver thanks for the ride along, be safe.
I enjoyed your video. Mountain trucking is mostly amazing, but can be dangerous in winter, especially downhill on icy serpentines. I rember the horror roads in Norway. Greetings from a retired German trucker, Paul
Grapevine,Ca is such a beautiful place, especially in winter when it snows. The road is very rough and poorly maintained. Many accidents occurred and ppl getting hurt or killed due to drivers exceeding speeds well over 90+ mls per hour. 😐👍🇺🇸
Привет! Камера на левом зеркале - хорошее решение, великолепный вид! Hi! The camera on the left mirror is a good solution, magnificent view!
When I was in the military and driving an military truck going over the grapevine you guys blew by us like we were standing still
Thanks... Love the mountains too but don't really like driving in them. :-)
They are great for some shots Ean. Learning all the different settings was quite a challenge though. :-)
Great Vid as usual and I like watching your stuff because you actually look like you enjoy trucking.
Awesome...loved this one! Brings back fond memories of my days as an 11 western driver.
Thanks for watching... Love driving and sharing.
There was some nice views of the mountains
Tough day's work runnin' from the Petro to the "J".
I remember two water stops going up the Grapevine. I miss Trucking in CA.
I always stop at Frazier park when I go through the Cajon pass. Its nostalgic because my dad and I stopped there every time we passed though.
Ahh been off work a month can't wait to get back on the road ...had to watch this I'll be going through the Grapevine this week to Portland!!
Happy Turkey Day to you too!
Used to be two water pull offs going up the Grapevine. Glad I never had to use them!
Thanks for the memories. Drove the Grapevine many many times back in the day. And I see not many things have changed other than the maintenance of the roadway could use some improvements. Anyway great views...X-Trucker Paul
oh yes, the infamous "Grapevine", heard so much about it, never had the displeasure of traveling up that,
Ooo yeah I do remember ... those hills n petro
Thanks Roland... Love the Go Pro but its too easy to get a good shot with it. Its such a good camera that it takes all the talent out of making good films. :-) Come back to CA even if its just for a vacation.
Great camera shot , thanks for sharing .
thanks Jack. Loved the multi view .
Some great Videos Jack. Every time I see your 5th wheel it appears to be dry of grease.
Great ride
Jack did you that before Elvis Presley became a full time singer he drove a truck for a company named Crown Electric. Small world isn't it Jack......I dig your videos alot....
Thankyou Jack. Hope you are having a good thanksgiving day.
Interesting video. Archive
I remember doing that grade when I was a trainee grossing at 79500lbs I could hear my trainer breathing heavily lmao poor guy...now its my favorite to climb and descend
You passed my neck of the woods...Frazier Park to the west
They recently shutdown the Denny's
Awesome camera work
i like your videos the way uset your cam its cool...
MUY LINDO GRACIAS
Nice view! I like the scenery but not driving there it’s steep then go down brake break😅 the vehicles must have good brakes. In the summer I turn off the air conditioner when hot and when going up the hills. It gives more power and don’t force the engine.
Thanks... I agree. Wish more RUclipsrs would. :-)
good job staying under 60. I know a guy who hauled steel up/down hwy 99 and he got like 5 tickets in one year doing 61/62 ..
wow some of these trucks I dont see them on the road anymore
Ty
I couldn't sleep so I tuned in here. That was a nice ride up the hill. I appreciate all the explanations. Are you allowed to use your flashers while moving? It used to be you couldn't-- you know... California laws.
You mentioned Fraser. When I was a kid in Scouts, we used to camp there some time.
Did you get the temperature question figured out? I live at 4250' and found that water boiled closer to 205° at that elevation. Could this affect your coolant mix?
Great camera mounting points in this video. The best one was the one outside the driver's side door pointing forward.
My only suggestion for improvement would be to mount the inside cameras (both of them) more firmly to some part of the body. The more firmly a camera is attached, the less apparent camera shake will be in the resulting video.
I enjoy your videos. Keep 'em comin'!
I'm working on it. I have one camera, with another ordered and in transit. I'm going to be giving a new camera a test run. I bought a NanoCam Pro, which is very similar to a GoPro, but it has an LCD screen so you can properly set up the right angle and view before you ever hit the record button. That was the big selling point for me.
Jack, you mentioned in the video, that you had to watch the temp. True especially with
an auto fan. You might consider putting a manual override switch in. Turn the fan on before you start the climb, the engine will run 5-10 cooler. At least it did in the trucks I drove. Had a Volvo out of Phoenix, 79,000+ gross of rebar, had to stop 4 times before I got to Flagstaff, to let it cool. For the newbies, never shut off a hot engine if possible. keith
Same opinion and advice here. Just as I came up on a snail in the slow lane I decided I could pass him on that same hill. Got out in the 'faster' lane and the engine defaulted into hot shutdown just as the fan finally kicked on so I had to brake and pull back in line at 5 MPH. Put in my own fan switch which got detected by the mechanics and they left a stern note not to re-direct any one of the three dome light switches again or they would have me terminated. It was an option on that model, but the company was too cheap to spring for it you see, I just happened to have a wiring diagram, my bad. That's when I learned to do my mods at the first truck stop out of town and return it to stock just before coming back.
I don't know if that was your car seat or what but your truck was really talking to you on that trip LOL!
Awesome work. Would it be possible for you to do a climb with a shot of the gauge cluster in the corner of the screen as your going up and going through the gears?
Only problem I've had is overheating even with manual override pulling 79,500. The 550 has more than enough power but I've learned to keep it in 5th gear till I reach the crest.
Like your video with multiple cameras. Can you tell me what cameras you're using?
One day, back in the mid 80s, my teem mate and I was coming down grapevine, I was in the sleeper, and I said I had to take a leek, well he grabbed the trailer brake, and locked up the trailer tires, as I climbing out of the bunk, just about sent me through the windshield,
OMG YaBoyBaby916 that's exactly what it does.
Hello Jack I watched your video going up the grapevine can you please tell me what gear you go i up p it and go down it and what rpms up and down the vine thanks.
Hey Indiana, I'm glad I found your channel, It's very informative for people are thinking of going into the trucking arena, I have a question and a comment, I know what the the ticking noise is but what is that squeaking noise? I'd really like to know. Have fun, many miles, and be safe...
I think you must be referring to my left and right blinker.
The blinker I know, it was when you were shifting (between gears )
Thank's for your reply,
Richard Broome: I thought it was the clutch. He double clutches a lot. Or, so say my ears.
Good times once you start getting up there northbound with a '97 Peterbilt 379 with a 48ft trailer and 80,000 pounds total weight we were like at 25mph or 30mph iirc in 5th or 6th gear with an 18 speed eaton fuller and a 3406b 425 CAT computer wide open.
it runs hot cuz that's what cummins do lol. they get to almost 215 and then they cool off,we own a few ex knight volov 670s like yours and theyre all the same even the D13s they all run hot then cooloff run hot cool off
which camera are you using for the rearview shots?
Wish I had a dime for every time I passed a truck going over the Grapevine, I would be rich, at times they are miles long, in thirty five years only saw two truck accidents and it was not
the truckers fault.
Which GPS were you using in this film?
what I find with my 3406B CAT , when I let the rpm's drop below 1600 the EGT's climb. If I keep it over 1600 rpm then the EGT's never go over 1000
Been awhile since drove an 18 wheeler through Grapevine... was easy whenever I did... I note you didn't put the steepest part of the climb in this video, which is from the truck stop to the summit , Tejon Pass 4144 feet elevation. Still nice vid... this is not really mountain driving as you know... I once did logging truck in the Sierras from Shaver Lake to the valley below... more shifting involved ..I liked it then, but now don't care to get up at 2 am ... now I go to the mountains east of Porterville to the giant sequoias i have on my land... happy motoring.
Only foot hills compared to the Sierras.
Sounds like you need to lube your clutch linkage or the bushing are going out.
I have 6 cameras I use. I have a Canon VIXIA HFS20, 2 Go Pro's, A little Canon camcorder (forgot the numbers) and a iPhone which, believe it or not I use for most of my videos. Whenever I am driving, everything is mounted down. Thanks for your interest. Do you make vids?
do you have to go down the hill in the same gear you came up in?
Impossible. Speed limit going down is based on your weight and you will be ticketed if exceeding 15 MPH with the full 80,000. Big sign at the top with a large dirt lot for setting/checking your brakes in has close to a dozen listings on it as to gross weight VS allowed speed. Time to read the road signs if ever there was such a time.
My bad. I heard Grapevine and remembered Cabbage patch instead. No need to rub it in.
What year did you start trucking?
Can you tell me or do a video more on driving in California? I have heard so much bad from drivers about driving in California to the point I am kind of scared to go there as a newbie, lol.
Cali isn't that bad speed limit is 55 but I've had no problem doing 60 some of the roads are fun to drive and don't go through LA
+Jerry Smith, you can get away with 61 mph.
An old timer told me your not a truck driver if you can not come down the ''GRAPEVINE'' without using your jakes. Is this true?
You have one heck of a squeak in your tractor, what is it?
Clutch
Im pretty sure its a GoPro.
Yes it is. I hate that road.
that hill can be murderous in the summer.. watch your EGT's too
Jack this video is so old i think you need to renew the viewing permit with RUclips. LOL
Check out wanful50 video entitled I am Coming Home Leave on the Light, and pass it on to those that need a pick me up. Especially, when they are ready to get home, and the whether is bad. Enjoyed the actual view of the road.
What is that squeaking noise?
why does your boot squeak so bad?!?????? or the linkage and bushing, as leonard said?
What is that truck called 5:39
Only big deal I see going up the Grapevine is all the burnt land.. The fun part of the Grapevine is Coming Down......
Bumpy
It's same in UK driver do thing like that eat food used mo/phone in their car and truck s van to
It's called "The Grapevine" not Grapevine hill!
Eveyones busting your chops about pulling off at the J when you just left the Petro at the bottom of the hill so I wont say anything thats a fuel mileage killer lol, hey Jack that is TMI about bending your leg with Ol Lisa back in the day com'on man lol, I saw a WinCo truck going down the Hill towards the bottom, could of been me on that date this was published
