I believe this was recorded in one take and spur of the moment late at night. We all thank the engineer for keeping that studio open for him so we all got to hear this incredible song. RIP IZ
Pronunciation: comma ka vevo ole. Such a pure voice. I grew up in Hawaii and remember him well. This sing made it global and is the best version of this song anywhere.
I lived in Hawaii for a bit. I had to unlearn habits & learn that two different vowel sounds could be successive without a consonant to break up each sound. Apostrophes take the place of percussive consonants. Beautiful language. Beautiful state. Beautiful people. I thank the Hawaiian people for having me. Blessed to live in Kaneohe Bay for 3 years. If I could retire anywhere, it'd be in Kailua.
You buggers it's flooding here in northland Aotearoa new zealand and you put this song on all we needed is more water coming from my eyes this is Soo bloody spine chilling and sad
I have no shame. I cry my face off every single time I hear this. When I found out he'd died(I found out a couple years later)I was just knocked out. Such a loss of such a gift😭
IZ is an inspiration and was loved by all. I was at Makua when they spread his ashes from the Hokule'a. Cars stopped along the 2 lane road leading to Ka'ena bringing traffic to a stand-still. Hundreds of people were wading in the water and hundreds more were on land. A procession of big rigs blew and held their horns echoing through the valley while his ashes were placed into the ocean making it sound as if the State of Hawaii was crying . . . it's a moment I will never forget. An incredible celebration of life for an incredible man!!
This is an incredibly moving song. It's my favourite version. I cry every time. My father passed away in 2006, my family and I didn't know until 2009 (long story) but we learned this song was played at his funeral. Maybe that's why I've always felt a connection and overwhelmed with love when listening to this song. Whatever it may be this is a beautiful song :) Ps. It's said that Israel recorded this song in one take.
This song genuinely brings tears to my eyes because we played it at my dad’s funeral. Iz had the sweetest, gentlest voice I’ve ever heard. It’s a reassuring sound that brings peace to me that over that rainbow is heaven. It’s a bittersweet song because I just think of my dad being in heaven.
Oh wow! Never thought y'all would react to brother Iz!! One of the biggest names to come from my home, Hawaii. Hey by the way Iz had called a studio at 3am cause the desire to do this song hit him suddenly. So the studio owner let him come down. He laid this track down in one take! One. Single. Take!
I definitely cried the first few times I heard this, even before I knew dude was dead. Just the tone of the song has that effect on a lot of people. And yeah, he did seem like such a genuinely kind soul. I really hope he’s at peace, but I don’t think I need to worry- he seemed more at peace in his life than anyone I’ve ever met.
was watching another video and stopped to come watch this all-time, hearing classic my 3 yr old niece trying to sing this song is one of the best things i have heard.
Morning fellas!! I'm so pleased y'all did this song and video! That man is surely sorely missed and loved! Got me teared up guys!! Great song! Thanks guys❤️🙂
Here's your chicken answer: In the 1700s, sugarcane was introduced to the islands, and large plantations soon sprung up. These plantations brought with them a menagerie of animals, including chickens. When the sugar industry began to decline in the late 1800s, many of these animals were simply let loose and left to fend for themselves. - Wikipedia
I heard this version on a commercial maybe? I didn’t know the story of this man. When this started, I thought this was the ultimate portrayal of joy and hope, then at the end I figured out what was happening. That was sad, but the people there were celebrating him, so that was even beautiful as well.
From what I've read, Iz was the only non-royal or politician to ever receive a state funeral in Hawaii, that's how universally he was beloved. I wish everyone could hear his song "Hawaii '78", a lament for his ancestors and how they would feel about all the changes that have come to the islands - I wouldn't have thought it possible, but I think it's even more beautiful and made me cry even more than this one.
Never be ashamed to cry. This song is beautiful, and that's the true power of music: to make us feel. Whenever I'm in a bittersweet mood, this is one of the songs I play. I have a four suggestions that are in a similar vein: 🔹"Blue" - Mai Yamane / The Seatbelts - from the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack. The first minute is a bit of a gospel vibe, but the rest of it? Absolutely beautiful. Mai's voice is so soulful. It's a hopeful bittersweet. It makes me cry a good bit. 🔹"Old '55" - Tom Waits - IDK if either of you still keep up with pro wrestling, but this song was played in the tribute video to Brodie Lee who tragically died two years ago. It's become forever associated in my mind. The song itself is great and I think you'd like it. 🔹"Feed Jake" - Pirates of the Mississippi - It's a country song with a dog, but it's a hell of a lot more than that if pay attention to the lyrics. You might even relate to it, as there's a line that says: "You know you got my heart, babe / But music's got my soul..." The music video really adds to it. It's a favorite of mine that I wish was reacted to more. 🔹"Miracle" - Jon Bon Jovi - from the Young Guns II soundtrack. If I could afford Patreon, this would be my song suggestion. It's fairly upbeat in tempo, but it's the lyrics where the bittersweetness comes into play. I'd love for you to do a lyrical analysis. It's one of my favorite songs. Fun fact: the official video has a young, pre-Friends Matt LeBlanc in it! I don't think it's ever been reacted to, either, so you'd be the first. 😁 (In all honesty, I would legitimately scrape the money together to pay you to review the entire Young Guns II soundtrack. I'm serious, name your price. It's all Jon Bon Jovi featuring different artists and musicians such as Jeff Beck and Little Richard. It's an absolutely amazing album and one of my favorites of all time.)
It takes someone with strong faith in who they are to allow themselves to show emotion on here. It's nice to see. It lets those of us out here know we're not the only ones.
There's 2 popular videos, one before he passed and this one, the remembrance! I'm glad yall chose this one. He was an absolute angel among us. I'm sitting in my truck watching this now just not wanting to get out until it's over.
My mom passed from Pancreatic Cancer in 2017. She was only 68. Her brothers and sisters put together a collection of videos/photos/memories and this version of this song was in the background. I will always cherish that day everytime I hear this song. It is also a good way to describe my Mom. She was always full of love and light in the darkest of times, wholesome and pure. She loved everyone even people she just met. I miss her a lot! Love ya Mom! 🌈❤
Being from Hawai'i, I can confirm chickens being everywhere haha. Hope you guys make it out here sometime. Incredible scenery. Na pali coast, waimea canyon, black, green and red sand beaches, tallest sea cliffs in the world. So much to see. Great video as always, dudes 🤙
Traditional having ashes put into ocean was reserved for Kings and Queen's. So to get permission to being spread into the ocean. Is a huge deal. IZ LIVES His beautiful voice was only dwarfed by the size of his heart. Everyone should try to be the human he wished we were.
Such an amazing version. And believe me, I didn’t plan on crying first thing in the morning. But we’ll worth it. Thank you guys for doing this. Have a great weekend. AND FOR GOD’S SAKE…react to more Volbeat. Cheapside Sloggers. Have a great Sunday boys.
My son's teacher played this a lot for her students when we were all at home and the kids were doing distance learning. That is the first time I ever heard this. It was really cool for her to play this for the kids. I loved that teacher! Such a great teacher!
They played this song as Mark Greene was dying in ER (TV programme) back in the day. Makes me choke up every time I hear it. It's beautiful, a one take masterpiece.
Hi bros, i love this version more than every other ! For me he was one of the very greatest singer of all cause he sings so soft and gentle ! I love you both ! Greatings and love from germany ♥️♥️🥰♥️♥️🥰♥️♥️
This holds meaning for me. My mom loved this version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow and it was played at her memorial service. It will be a year on March 1st and it will always get me teared up.....
The first time I heard that song was on an episode of "ER" when Dr. Green died of cancer in Hawaii. I loved that cover. It made the scene in that show 10 times more sad.
First saw this version about 25 yrs ago when I was doing some hospice work and we had to "plan our funeral" as part of the training... this was and still is one of my funeral songs... just beautiful... RIP IZ
This is a wonderful song. I loved this man’s work and vibe and miss him. He died the same way as my husband, minus a lot of suffering, since Israel seemed to have died suddenly, at least. This song often makes me cry- a gift, actually. ❤️ This was his memorial video, with his ashes being spread into the Pacific Ocean which he loved so much.
I’m very glad y’all have heard this. It’s pretty wildly famous. Unfortunately my grandma loves it so much that I no longer love it lol. I’d bet at least 1 million of those 1 billion views are from my grandmother😅 RIP IZ.
IZ is such an inspirational person, and a Hawaiian national treasure. He was an avid activist for rights of native islanders, who are effectively considered "second class citizens" on their own island. He raised awareness about it in his music and is easily considered Hawaii's greatest musician. This song specifically was purely spur of the moment, he rang a friend of his that that then contacted a local recording studio for him, at 3am, stating that he had an idea for a song and really needed to record it now, and was told he could come in to do his recording if he made it in 15 minutes! He arrived and did it in one take! After IZ died he was one of only 3 people (and the only non government official) to be honored by having the Hawaiian flag flown at half staff for his funeral, and having his coffin laid in the state capital building. 10,000 people attended his funeral and at it they celebrated his life, and everything he did. The clips in this video of people celebrating and partying are from his funeral where his ashes were scattered in the pacific ocean.
Goosebumps of joy. :} Please tell me you guys know who did this originally. (Judy Garland in the movie The Wizard of OZ. August 25, 1939) He mixed it with Louis Armstrong's song What a Wonderful World.
Another epic reaction! Id really like to see you react to Billy Thorpe - Children of the Sun. Think y'all would really like this one and give it another epic reaction!
You guys absolutely have to check out, Eva Cassidy's cover of this song as well, both she and Israel do the impossible and take one of the most covered songs in history and each was able to make a fresh and unique take on it and make it their own, and that while very different, they are equally impressive and fantastic.
This song is the just the complete epitome of encapsulating good, loving, and positive vibes. I would love to see yall start to branch out to check out some reggae, mainly some more new-age stuff. Bands like Slightly Stoopid, Stick Figure, Iration, Dirty Heads, Hirie, etc. Reggae music is just so positive and chill and I think yall would dig that stuff! Love the channel and keep it up guys!
Love stick figure and iration!! Do you like the movement or SOJA or Tanya Stephens?? Good one by SOJA is "rest of my life" and by Tanya Stephens is "it's a pitty".
Hey Guys. I didn´t see you in a while. But here you pick one of my favorite songs of all times. 😃 The original from Judy and the IZ Versions. But i prefer from IZ the Somewhere over the Rainbow/ Wondeful World Medley more the only the one Song.

I believe this was recorded in one take and spur of the moment late at night. We all thank the engineer for keeping that studio open for him so we all got to hear this incredible song. RIP IZ
Yes his producer got a call from Iz at 3 a.m. and he said he had an idea. He did this song in 1 take. Beautiful song. R.i.p. Iz
@@joelabel7843 I'm glad I was right on it being one take but thanks for the full story.
I feel like this man’s voice can end Wars. Simply beautiful
Well said. Agreed
Pronunciation: comma ka vevo ole. Such a pure voice. I grew up in Hawaii and remember him well. This sing made it global and is the best version of this song anywhere.
When Trent Reznor said Johnny Cash had made Hurt his song, this was what he meant. Iz made this song his, and in doing so, made it all of ours.
I lived in Hawaii for a bit. I had to unlearn habits & learn that two different vowel sounds could be successive without a consonant to break up each sound. absolutely my favorite version of this song. He had a voice that makes you believe there is good in this world when so many things show otherwise

there is another version out there where he merges Somewhere Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong. It is so beautiful.
I think Iz is the only person buried with a state funeral in modern Hawaii
Cheers guys fantastic reactions.. and when you go there record it and make a reaction video
This is probably one of my all time favorite chill songs.

The last third of the video is of his funeral!Everyone went to celebrate his life!
First time i saw him was on a surf movie in the 80s named north shore.
I think this one of the most beautiful recordings of all time
This is just so beautiful. I love this❤️❤️❤️

Tears are an essential part of the human experience. Despite what society has told us for so long, it takes real strength to allow oneself to feel.
Beautiful

Love the king shirt smokey, just a heads up, they have a new ep, and video out should really check out "brains on the asphalt."
Goosebumps of joy. :}
Please tell me you guys know who did this originally.
(Judy Garland in the movie The Wizard of OZ. August 25, 1939)
He mixed it with Louis Armstrong's song What a Wonderful World.
Thank you for pointing out the mashup! It sadly is just referred to as Over the Rainbow but the blending of these two songs is something else again.
Quite possibly the most beautiful song ever. Makes my eyes sweat every single time 🖤 Rest in sweet Paradise, Iz
Gets me every time

I'm checking it out now on Spotify, Holly crap, that is haunting beautiful!!!!!! Guys, I agree, check this one out!
Loved it the first time I heard it and I've watched it at least 100× very sad about his passing 😢
You guys absolutely have to check out, Eva Cassidy's cover of this song as well, both she and Israel do the impossible and take one of the most covered songs in history and each was able to make a fresh and unique take on it and make it their own, and that while very different, they are equally impressive and fantastic.

They’d played his funeral on the news when I was in first grade but he’s a legend
The last shot in the video is Bruddah Iz (rhymes with IS) on the island of Kauai. He was a singing god out here in Hawaii.
If you love someone tell them often
Oh-wee-oh-lee-oh-wee....yes! swish! 😂🤣😂🤣😂....great reaction:)
This song is the just the complete epitome of encapsulating good, loving, and positive vibes. I would love to see yall start to branch out to check out some reggae, mainly some more new-age stuff. Hey Guys. I didn´t see you in a while. But here you pick one of my favorite songs of all times. 😃 The original from Judy and the IZ Versions. But i prefer from IZ the Somewhere over the Rainbow/ Wondeful World Medley more the only the one Song.
As a man married to a native Hawaiian the name is pronounced : Ka-Maka-Vee-Vo-Olay however most people just call him Iz aka Hawaiian Superman
Had the pleasure of watching him & another Hawaiian artist, Keali'i Reichel, perform in San Jose, California many, many years ago
He is a treasure to the Kānaka Maoli of the islands.
And yes there are boat loads of wild feral chickens running all over the place 😂😂😂
He called the recording studio guy at 2:30 am he opened up for him and he did this song in one take.
Best version ever of this song!
IZ's hit came out in 1993...so way over a decade ago💯😏.
RIP to this gifted artist🌺🏝🌈🌦🍍🥭🥥🎶.
If I'm not mistaken, I do believe IZ was one of only 3 people to lie in state at the capitol building in Hawai'i. Also, another song that y'all should check out is from Disney's short Lava. I'm not sure who sings it, but it's such a beautiful little song that I think y'all will love. ♥
I really believe it’s impossible for a human being to dislike this song.
Such a beautiful rendition of this iconic song. His change of the lyrics throws me off, though. R.I.P. IZ
You should play the version where he mixes this and A Wonderful World!!!!😊
It’s actually been over 20 years ago but still a beautiful song
I cry every time
Guys, really . IZ recorded a rendition of Judy Gatlands signature recording of Over the Rainbow from the movie Thw Wizard of Oz
When you spend two minutes of your video trying to pronounce the name of the singer 🤣
I cried too.
