The reality is simply that people of immigrant descent only have an immigrants understanding of the United States of America. They talk all that "but Black Americans ancestors came from somewhere else" bullshit.... Get that same truth could be said about any black person in the Western hemisphere. Yet no one shames black Jamaican for identifying as Jamaican over simply African and no one shames black Brazilian for identifying as black Brazilians instead of just African. But people do that to black American descendants of US slaves and it's oftentimes because they're narrow-minded immigrant perspective in the US is one where they personally view americanness as being exclusive to white people and, because they are black and immigrant, only understand blackness in the United States of America through the lens of an immigrant experience

I don't claim these acronyms, but I get what she's saying. The way I look at it is this, if it's wrong for Black Americans to simply consider ourselves our own ethnicity then it has to be wrong for Jamaicans to claim Jamaica or Haitians to claim Haiti, Bermudans to claim Bermuda, etc. Those Caribbean countries should mean nothing to them, they should just claim Africa. If they want to keep claiming their Caribbean, Afro Latino heritages then no one should be questioning our strictly claiming our Black American identity.

@@dboi4952 We call ourselves Black Americans. Why aren't those Caribbean countries calling themselves New Senegal, New Ghana, etc? Seems like they've accepted they have their own separate identity from Africa and their own culture separate from Africa, why is it only wrong when Black Americans do this? It's even easier for these Caribbean nations to take on more African identities, because they can change the names of their nations. Why isn't the Bahamas called Little Igbo? You don't need your own separate country to have your own ethnic identity, Kurds, Palestinians, Rohingyans, Romanis don't have their own separate ethnic majority nations, neither do most African ethnicities. Black Latinos largely don't have their own nations either, the closest you may can say are Dominicans, but apparently most don't see themselves as black. Most black Americans don't know shit about Africa and even look down on it. We suffer from lack of an identity, and a complete and total lack of knowledge about Africa. Our lineage is American, she's right. I didn't understand this until I moved out of the US, and started being around actual Africans from various places, and realized how my entire understanding of the world is based on being American and how Africans see me as different from them because of that. The problem with these kinds of discussions is the overt mindset among those who are ignorant is that Black Americans aren't an ethnic community and instead are an off-shoot African population that reside in the US so those who have melinated phenotypes can be grouped into it especially as they become US citizens(we're talking about those with immigrant backgrounds) are dismissive of Black Americans' unique history as a people.
The reparations discussion which I agree with BTW becomes a shiny object to distract from the truth of Black Americans' history as a people and how much their history as a community is tied to the history of the US.
The 1860 4.4 million population grouped (88% enslaved and 12% free before The US Civil War 1861-1865) into American Blackness is the ethnogenesis of contemporary Black Americans and is the basis of our ethnic identity. I'm a 4th-5th generation full descendant of that unique population and this defines my own identity.

But it was not a continuous history. Leif Erikson also came to the Americas before Columbus, but the continuous history of non Indigenous people in America starts in 1492, and for black people or ADOS or FBA, whatever you want to call it, it starts with chattel slavery. History is history, fact is fact. "We was here before?" Who was "we"? Do you know which tribe or nation out of Africa actually came to US before Columbus. While actually not proven beyond some circumstantial evidence that is also confused by the intermediate history, there is archaeological evidence that could suggest travelers came from Mali, which would mean you could only claim "we was here" if you are from Mali. People from Mali were not really part of American chattel slavery, some countries that were involved were certainly part of the Malian Empire, but not all. If black Americans actually had any real understanding of Africa, we would be calling saying stuff like this but we only see ourselves as a homogenized, monolithic group because that is how we were cultured her, and our connections to Africa have been obscured and confused.

@@ameenahameed8874 that may be the case but on government forms African-American did not come about until post 1980. Also the term itself is problematic because the language of it matters. They call Barack Obama the first African-American president and Kamala Harris the first African-American vice president but neither of them are African-American. It allows for people who are immigrants of African descent to use the word interchangeably. To prevent that you have to create a term that has the specificity that only identifies those that discern from the institution of American child slavery i.e. ADOS or American Descendants of Slavery.

Those calling for reparations betray their own failures. The successful do not call for reparations; their success is their best revenge. USA: former colony of England; USA: successful country not asking for reparations. Australia: former colony of England; Australia: successful country not asking for reparations. Taiwan: former colony of Japan; Taiwan: successful country not asking for reparations. South Korea: former colony of Japan; South Korea: successful country not asking for reparations. North Korea: former colony of Japan; North Korea: failed nation, should it ask for reparations?
Failures have a proven record of failing time and time again and show no exercise of self-repair. Monetary "reparations" will repair nothing. Monetary "reparations" is akin to giving more heroin to the heroin addict: short term pleasure followed with long term pain. Actual healing is done from within, not from without.
Paradox of getting a bank loan: those in the least need of loans are most likely to get loans. If you have outstanding debt, no job, criminal record, living on the streets, you definitely NEED a loan but you are very unlikely to get a loan. Of course you have a long list of reasons for your pitiful situation ("The Police broke my arm.", "My great-great-great-grand parents were SLAVES!!!", "The landlord stole my furniture.", "My wife left me.", etc.). But no matter: No. Money. For. You.
You may elicit pity but you do not get respect. You may elicit compassion but you do not get admiration. You may elicit empathy but you have bad reputation. You may elicit sympathy but you show no virtue. You may elicit sorrow but you have no credibility.
Those most likely to get reparations are those who are demanding it from strength; but then, given your strength, you are unlikely to ask for reparations: Success is the best Revenge.
Morality is a bitch. Morality is a tough Parent. Empathy without Understanding leads to Foolishness. Foolishness is not Morality. The purpose of Morality is to ensure the survival of Society, not to have Kumbaya sessions. It is immoral for Society to allow malignant tumors to grow: at some point Society will die. For those demanding reparations: is your credit score (not the credit score of your great-great-grand parents) high enough to get "reparations" from Society? Answer: Quite likely, NO. For those demanding reparations: are you a societal malignant tumor? Answer: Quite likely, YES.
People with success in the Present have their memories of Failure dimming away with time. People with failure in the Present have the memories of Past Failures and Past Successes burning brighter and brighter with time. People with failure in the Present have not learned from their Past (Failure, Success) and is thus stuck in the swamp of Present Failure. People with failure in the Present flash out the Victim Card, citing the Failures of the Past and demanding Reparations (I was robbed! My great-great-great-grand parents were SLAVES!!! Wypiple stole my wealth!!!). People with failure in the Present flash out the Victim Card, citing the Successes of the Past, saying "I am as Good now as I was in the Past. I am a Failure now because I am OPPRESSED!!! I have been SUPPRESSED!!! I have been VICTIMIZED!!!"
Become a Victim and win a prize!!! Victims of the World, Unite!!!

Being Haitian American born and raised in New York, most of my upbringing and experience at large would be described as that of an “African American” we must innerstand that until all black and indigenous history is claimed by all black and indigenous people, we will continue to fight each other instead of finding common ground to combat the current state of the land and its treatment of our people.

@@ellisbrisbane8959 as far as I see and experience we do get along. Long before colonialism our ancestors have been traveling to this land. From this land to other lands. Indigenous people, those melanated people that have all ready been here, all the same people you go back far enough. This part of the world has been occupied by indigenous and those of “African” ancestry for a long time before colonization. I refuse to believe we don’t get along. Grouping ourselves into groups like this event before folks receive reparations, this kind of in fighting isn’t good for anyone. WHO profits off of it? The system. The same system that doesn’t care for these kinds of nuances and just see us as numbers/pawns to be used in their race game. My question is what is the point of this division/in fighting? It feels like we’re being played by an entity that can’t be seen, or chooses not to be seen. An entity that doesn’t have to involve themselves directly bc we’ll just do the fighting amongst each other, and this entity continues to grow. Fighting for claim in a system/society that has never truly recognized us as people is simply ridiculous.

@origoldproductions to answer ur question it's not about dividing anything & as far as I'm concerned it ain't even about reparations. The ADOS movement is about holding America accountable let's make that clear. Me being ADOS & supportive of the movement does not mean I am anti anything nor does it mean I'm not Pan-African, the 2 can coexist. My question to u is, what is the problem with us having our own identity in our own country? Why aren't we allowed to be proud Americans while also being Black? My family has been in this country since before the country was created, why should we claim another place that we have never been to especially if we don't feel supported by the ppl from there? The wild part is, if the conversation of reparations weren't present (again idgaf about reparations) we wouldn't even be having this discussion? With the exception of Marcus Garvey I don't recall anybody from elsewhere in the diaspora condemning America & actually supporting us. & that's thru slavery, jim crow, civil rights movement, mass incarceration, war on drugs, the list goes on. U wanna decrease division amongst us all? Then support the movement. U don't have to be an active supporter either, u could simply sit this 1 out & let us handle our own business.

She has a bunch of weak arguments!! She's not well read or well versed! She makes a good point but makes weak arguments to prove that point!

Bro please enlighten me, what exactly is being divided & conquered? To be divided would imply that we all stand together right? Ok so if u didn't know this already, we do not stand together! The mere fact that us holding America accountable for atrocities committed against us & our ancestors being a problem for other Black ppl is a clear testament of that. If we all stood together than this conversation would completely irrelevant. However because there is a potential pitch of a dollar sign (& realistically we're never getting reparations) being attached to it, it's a problem & now we have to unite?
