  • It should be no surprise to anyone that I hold the years of 2012-2016 in high regard when it comes to metal music. There's a chance that this is due to personal bias. I started listening to extreme metal around this time, I had copious amounts of time as a college student, and I felt like I was truly keeping up with new releases. Well, it's been about 10 years since this era, and I feel like the albums and bands not only hold up but issued in a renaissance of extreme metal for some of the bigger metal subgenres. In fact, I feel so strongly about this, that the purpose of this video is to make some key points as to why this is an important era for metal! I think it should be dubbed as a renaissance period and I feel really lucky to have started in this era and cut my teeth on the bands and releases that I talk about in this video.
Am I just a biased millennial or do you think the points that I make in this video have some validity? Weigh-in in the comments and let me know what your opinion of this time period is one way or the other! Thanks for watching, cheers!
Obviously I don't own the music and the mighty Khemmis deserve all the credit!

Those were probably best years of my life definetely, cause my life was all about metal and horror 😂 I wasn't even realizing back then how happy I was, only now do I see it... too bad those days are gone, and now there is life 😢 "and so is life" as Dismember song says

I echo your sentiment! Everything sounded fresh and exciting and I too had a similar excitement for classic horror and 90s/80s Anime during this time. As you said now it’s life, responsibilities, and work 🤷‍♂️. *Wasted Years plays in background*

I watched 2-3 DEATH rankings today. I wish it was best - to worst, ranking.
Thinking about buying one of their CDs.
Oh, also noticed that the singer/founder died rather young. 34.

I will definitely do a Death ranking soon, it’s been overdone but for good reason imo. Honestly you can’t go wrong with any of their albums. Thanks for watching 🍻

I don’t know if I would use the word renaissance I would go with resurgence. And it’s a bit difficult or different to not go by year to year, but just looking at the comparison of 2011 and 2012. The quality of albums in my opinion got better. I noticed there was rather large cross section of diversity between 2011 and 2012 in terms of genres. It almost seemed as Metal had a very popular year in 2012 and that carried over to 2013. So then you come to 2014 and it’s a lot like 2011 not to much mind blowing or quality albums in terms of numbers. But then 2015 killed it again soooo… I wondered in terms of just the music industry if there was any indication as to why 2012 was more notable or different than any other year. I came up with 2012 had the highest purchases of downloads or peak of music downloads sales and that number has been steadily declining since 2012.

I feel resurgence would be appropriate, I just feel it was the reimagining of a couple classic subgenres: mainly doom, death, and black metal for a new generation (us millennials lol). I also notice that trend of every third year being the best year 🤷‍♂️, don’t know if I can explain that. Thanks for watching!

It's all personal perception but from where I stand early 2010s were among the worse years for metal. Ever since the 70s there were constantly new scenes and subgenres emerging. That ended in the late 2000s when the (in)famous deathcore & djent scenes emerged. Ever since we've been rehashing the old sounds

You’re absolutely right about it being personal perception, though I definitely agree that it’s when a lot of recycling of the old genres began. Because I oblivious to this though, I loved these albums all the more! Thanks for watching Count 🍻
