There are plenty of reviews for this scope meter already out there but not many that check the performance of the 3 modes: scope, function gen and multimeter, hence performance checks are the primary focus of this review.

      I too am looking at the HDS2102S, but it will ship from China - take longer and cost more. Do you really think the extra fuss is with it over the 272s? I know - 100 MHz and twice the sampling rate, but can you say that will make or the usefulness of this kind of device.

      @@reedreamer9518 well mine can be ordered directly from Germany and since the difference is only a few Euros i think its worth it.
      If this device is useful at all for somebody highly depends on the person itself... I think for me as a hobbyist this device is more than i will ever need in my life

    That was an excellent review! You have gone very thoroughly through every aspect of the oscilloscope and verified its accuracy using quality equipment. Nobody does that with this kind of detail really. Your review was more that i would hope to find, thank you for the huge effort. Only comment i have is that you probably only did it injustice in terms of noise sensitivity since most of it was probably caught by the external wiring in 15:00.
    Except for the amazing specs verification you have done, It would be nice to see an additional video concerning actual use cases such as noise measurment (ex. ps ripple with paperclip or tip and barrel method) or trigger use cases (like transient, rise/fall time measurment or ringing) etc. Even if you are not interested in a follow up video your review was excellent and as i said more than i would hope to find.

      Thanks for your comment. I'll consider it but I recon it would be more like "common uses for an oscilloscope". I could compare the HDS272S with the Rigol 1054z. Could be interesting... But it will take a bit of time because of other videos I plan to do first.

    I have just bought one of these in part based on your review. I needed a scope with mains isolation for making some measurement on a floating earth arrangement. I will probably do a review on my channel but I thought your review was very good. Thanks regards chris

    For a square wave at 20MHz, only the first two components (20MHz, 60MHz) are within the scope's spec'd bandwidth, so I wouldn't expect it to be all that square. At 50MHz, the third harmonic (150MHz) is well outside of the spec'd bandwidth, but furthermore, with a sampling rate of 250Msps, shannon-nyquist sampling theorem tells us that it's impossible for us to even hope for any frequency components above 250Msps/2=125MHz. Your Rigol measures 1Gsps, so it could theoretically detect frequencies up to 500MHz - well past the theoretical capability of the HDS272S, even if they had the exact same analog front-end. Nothing wrong with your testing, and nice to see the comparison, but I would have liked to see you talk about this aspect of the square wave testing, explaining why the 50MHz sine looked fine, but not the 50MHz square.

      Oh, and as to where you can tell the difference between a square and a sine, the absolute theoretical max (assuming no aliasing issues) would be 125MHz as the 3rd harmonic, so 125MHz/3 = 41.7MHz. Pretty much exactly what you said (40MHz), but again, would have been nice to state WHY that was the limit :)

    When the high sensitivity to the nearby switching power supply in 10mv/div showed, it looked like a BNC was plugged in going to the red multimeter and then going to the test source via single wires. I suspect it came mainly from there, it is the probing which picks the noise up, i don't think the scope itself is so susceptible as it also has some shielding for the input section. I even would think it is better with a probe connected compared to a bench scope where the BNC ground is connected to the power input earth.

      Excellent point. Sometimes I seem to miss the obvious... I just tried the scope and with no cable there is no interference even on the highest sensitivity. Same with a good coax cable that goes directly into the BNC connector. I guess I owe OWON an apology.

    Could the ADC being overclocked be a factor in the temperature sensitivity of scope measurement you mentioned around 17:00 in the video? Really appreciate your review and analysis. Very helpful and learned a lot from your expertise. Just bought it after your review. Keep up the excellent sharing of knowledge.

    Just use an external usb battery pack to use or recharge it. Keep your isolation that way.

      The small power adapter has at least mains isolation and also no earth connection, for up to a few hundred volts proven to work, otherwise it would be unusable and potentially deadly. The biggest issue might be noise coupling from the small power adapter into the probing, but just a few turns through a toroid ferrite could already help with that. And if not, a better filter could easily be inserted in the power cable.

    Great review! Could you please also have a look at the Owon TAO3122A which is a Tablet scope with 14bit vertical resolution. A comparison between Owon, Migsig and Siglent would be also very interesting!

      No doubt interesting and I would love to do such things but unfortunately this channel is so small that I have to buy all the stuff I review out of my own pocket (rare exceptions like the recent KM601 review I got for free excepted). So my rule is whatever I buy is for my own use and needs first and not for reviews. Making a video about my purchases comes a long way second (sorry). I don't have the money to buy more than one, say, handheld scope for a shootout review even if I could sell the unwanted items on eBay afterwards to recoup some of the cost.

    Hello, can you use the multimeter leads to input and see the sinewave from an electrical socket? I've been searching everywhere for this answer as i'm new to oscilloscopes.

      No, as with most serious scope meters, the scope inputs are separate from the multi meter inputs. One reason is that scope inputs are for higher frequencies and use BNC sockets to allow scope probes but as all scopes they can't handle any current or more that 100V.

      Max. input voltage of the scope is 40 Vpp, which is common for scopes. Most scope probes have optional 10x attenuation, so theoretically 400 Vpp are possible and the probe I got with my HDS242 is rated that high. Nevertheless IMHO measuring directly at 230 V power line is a bad idea as GND is not isolated. Better use a transformator.

    10:53 - ИМХО это не проблема осциллографа, а проблема щупов/кабелей/грамотного подключения с согласованием импедансов ... по хорошему, читобы проверить осцилл., нужен генератор с выходным сопротивлением 50 ом - 50-ти омный кабель - 50-ти омный вход осциллографа ... если у осцилла нет 50-ти омного входа, есть специальные 50-ти омные нагрузки на кабель(50 ohm cable load bnc) ...

    Hi, I am not very experienced with Oscilloscopes - hwr, is ist possible fi. to measure and store a voltage measurement like every few seconds over hours or days with this one? Fi. to graph a battery discharge/charge diagram?

      Scopes are not the right tool for this in general but this scope would almost work for you. The slowest timebase is an incredible 500 seconds per square on the screen. With 12 squares across you get 6000 seconds, almost 2 hours of recording (don't forget to use single shot, or the scope will overwrite the previous recording). If your battery test is completed in 6000s you would have the volt curve on the screen. You could export as excel or use cursors to read individual values. But in general you need a multimeter that can log values. An affordable solution if you stay below 30V and 5A would be the USB tester TC66C (check my videos on this), It can measure and log V,Amp simultaneously and is not limited to just USB if you make yourself an adaptor for normal test leads

      @@haemse I honestly can't remember if I showed it. The TC66 can log internally and you can set the interval time. I verified that you can dump the log electronically through USB (at least my software can) into a CSV (excel) file, however I normally use the PC to log the data directly.

    What if I use a 2 prong adaptor when charging would this isolate the scope from the ground and live mains from shorting. It's a dumb question I know but I nit the smartest and iam trying to learn all this. And at 34 years of age my brain is starting to work.

      It is not a dumb question at all. In principle you are correct. Practically, all adaptors are not constructed to provide that isolation reliably. Many really cheap ones (especially those for xmas lights from China) and have only a capacitor dropper. Even those with a transformer in it have often terrible isolation distances inside and primary and secondary only isolated by a microscopically thin layer of lacquer. Using these to power the scope while measuring stuff directly connected to mains would be very dangerous Have a look at DiodeGoneWild who often reviews the safety of adaptors. The only safe way would be by using a proper isolation transformer.

      @@TheHWcave okay thanks cause I bought some test equipment. And I just now have the time to learn how to properly use it. Soniam gonna order a couple more of those adaptors from Amazon. Cause I deffinentley do not want to blow up my scope.

    Excellent video on the technical aspect of the meter. I have some issues with the instrument. Using the buttons to do things is so confusing. The manual does not show complete operations to reach the different functions. As an example, I accidently changed the language to Russian. Took me an hour to get back to English and I still don't know how I got there. Very poor manual. Scope also does not display values such as RMS or Peak values of the waveform display. These would be quite useful and basic measurements. The meter can also save four reference waveforms, yet when called up, they are a reduced bandwidth version. Not like what was captured.

      Yes, the manual isn't the greatest but then I have seen worse. It doesn't do RMS but it does peak-to-peak and amp which I think is 1/2 of peak to peak, also max, min and average, frequency and period. Very basic but still useful. It is possible that the PC-based remote control sw does more (using the captured waveform) I am not using that program so I can't tell if it's math functions have improved. I normally save waves as excel files which works (with the caveats shown in the video) and that gives you a dump of the full acquisition memory. I don't use the other formats so I am great full for information how well (or not) they work

    I'm surprised the signal ground and signal test ground are not floating as you can use the signal generator and the oscilloscope at the same time.

      I am not sure if I understand your point. What is signal-ground vs signal test ground? In the HDS272S, signal grounds of scope, function generator, the 1KHz probe alignment generator and the USB port are all connected to each other. As long as neither is connected to earth, the whole thing is floating.

      @@TheHWcave Sorry, by floating I meant independent like the multimeter ground connection. If that plastic flap breaks off then the ground connection is exposed; it does not have the same safety coating as the BNC connectors.

      @@stevenspmd Yes, you are correct. Keeping the plastic flap closed when measuring in dangerous circuits is essential for safety, especially if you hold the HDS272S in your hand. I should have mentioned that. Good catch!

      Yes, but there are lot of things to look out for. This is very dangerous and you need to know mains electricity very well and don't blame me if you hurt yourself or blow-up the scope. The scope inputs can only handle 140VAC. You therefore need at least a 10:1 probe (100:1 or 1000:1 is also ok). Use one that is rated for at least 250VAC (more is better). I personally do not trust the OWON probes. Make sure the BNC connector of the probe is fully insulated (no blank metal visible or touchable once connected to the scope). Do not use more that one input and do not connect anything else to the scope (in particular no USB!!!). Do not hold the scope or the probe in your hand while testing. Connect the probe while power to the SMPS is completely (both line and neutral) off. If you need to probe somewhere else, turn power to the SMPS off first (both line&neutral) first, then move the probe. Do not touch anything on the SMPS. Operate the scope with 1 hand and do not touch anything else with the other hand while doing it. These are just the basic precautions. Its not a joke, please be careful.

      @@mohamedrasheed201 That would take a long time because I am pretty busy in my day job and have a large backlog of half finished videos. For learning about SMPS, it is much safer to buy a DC-2-DC buck converter say 24V down to 12V or 5V and explore it under different output loads and input voltages. Then try the same with a boost converter say 5V to 12V. For scope work, check out Dave's EEVblog video: How not to blow up your scope. I highly recommend it for anybody with a scope, especially if it has more than one channel. And finally, DiodeGoneWild's channel has lots of SMPS reviews and teardowns and he often uses a scope to check wave forms. But note that he sometimes uses an isolation transformer for safety and if he uses multiple scope channels how carefully he has to select where he can safely probe. Hope that helps

      @@TheHWcave, ok, thanks for the answer. I bought a hds242 and it also has a problem with voltage drift during process of the internal heat up. It seems both models hds242 & 272 (s) have the same issue.

      @@yankovalsky7696 Yes, that seems a common issue. I find I mostly use the scope to quicky look at wave forms and a ballpark figure of amplitude is good enough so I run autocal not that often. For the few cases where I want better accuracy, I leave it running for a several minutes (warm-up) and then run autocal before doing the measurements

    Ok, I get it -- I'll probably have to ditch my plan to use the HDS272S to calibrate my Quad LTZ1000 Voltage Standards -- or the frequency of my GPS Sync'ed Rubidium Clock -- DARN ! ! ! -- that's a real disappointment ! ! ! -- But here's a thought -- you know what WOULD have been useful information?
    How about finding out whether the claimed "REAL TIME" sampling capture rates are real, or total B.S. (as they are for example on the FNIRSI 5012H). It's not that hard to find out, just set up a high speed SPI at say 10, 20 or 30 Mbits/sec and then try to one-shot capture a data frame and see if you get a waveform that is even remotely usable.
    Lot's of these Chinese Handheld scopes give total B.S. specs claiming "Real Time Sampling" up to some impressively high frequency, but actually quietly switch to what euphemistically used to be called "equivalent time" multi-pass sampling for all the fastest ns/div sweep ranges, making them USELESS for any kind of high speed one shot capture.
    The good news is, from the tear down videos posted elsewhere, it looks like the OWON HDS272S may be using something like a clone version of the AD9288, and, if only slightly overclocked to 125MHz/ch, this impressively fast 2ch ADC could indeed do honest interleaved one shot "real time" sampling at the claimed 250Ms/s -- but ONLY if everything else is working perfectly to handle triggering and the required super high speed data transfers. The BAD NEWS is the FNIRSI 5012H ALSO uses essentially the same dual channel overclocked ADC arrangement and, as already noted, it's total CRAP on ALL it's higher sample rates.
    Please note; all the pretty high speed sine waves at 80 or even 90 MHz that well meaning folks like Kerry Wong are posting are WORTHLESS in checking this, because the scope could be taking 40, 50, or a 100 passes through the waveform using old school B.S. "equivalent time" techniques, to hide the fact that it can't do real time sampling at a high enough rate -- and you would never know, because any repetitive non-changing waveform would look just fine.
    It won't break my heart if I can't use the HDS272S scope's built in voltage readings to calibrate any Josephson Junction Voltages I have that might need adjusting -- but it WOULD be nice to know if the damn thing is at least able to capture high speed SPI data before plonking down a couple hundred bucks to buy one.

      All common scopes, freq counters, spectrum analyzers etc. have a max. input voltage rating of around 20 to 50 Vpp. Just take a 10x or 100x attenuator probe.
