    Good Heavens!! I've been sewing for over 50 years and I NEVER knew that the way the thread is wound on the spool dictates if it should be horizontal or vertical with your machine! Head slapping time. Thanks!

      Me also. I have an extra thread spool that fits down over the bobbin winder shaft. I think I will use that and see if it runs smoother .I have a Project Runway Innovis 80 and the only thing I dont like about it is filling the bobbin. I have to stand up and look down over it because I cant see to wind that darn thread around the tension disc. Oh well what can you do....Three cheers for Miss Laura

      Had no idea about the way the thread is wound. Now my question, what if the machine doesn't have a vertical spool holder, is there a way to still use that kind of thread without breaking needles? Thanks

    This was a very good video, Laura. I work in a sewing shop and I am constantly amazed people who have been sewing for years do not know these (what I think are obvious) things. These are things my mother taught me when she started teaching me to sew when I was 11 (which means I have been sewing for 50 years - please do not do the math😊). 👍

    I’m so glad you posted this video. My machine gives me such angst with thread and bobbin problems. After all the money I paid for this machine (over $3k) I was ready to return the machine. I thought Bernina was the cream of the crop and the best I could buy. I loved that it was built by experts in Switzerland. However, my friend owns a $500. Singer and never seems to have any issues.

      G'day Dianne, Berninas are beautiful machines. I own 3. But, they are different from other machines. My advice is to re-read the manual and go through the practice exercises. I had been sewing for over 30 years when I got my first Bernina. I learnt a lot by doing those practice exercises. Also, please go back to your dealer, with your machine and get one on one lessons, highlighting your issues. I wish you well and joy with your sewing.

    I’m new to sewing and your tips have been so helpful! I’ve had a needle snap on me recently and I had no clue why. I was having a very bad needle day lol. I hate the thread where it gets caught in the stupid notch on the spool. I just have avoided using those spools. I didn’t even think to use my little thingie that Adds the second spool as an upright spool holder thingie. (I’m sure none of that made sense lol). I need to figure out how to use the upright spool thingie. I know it goes on the bobbin threader but that’s all I know haha

  • @shananarocks
    @shananarocks 2 года назад

    Basically "Prevention is better than Cure!!!". Many people do not realize that the needle can bend very easily when you tug or pull the string to cut after each sewing. Sometime when the string is a bit taut, you will pull harder and this action will bend the needle slightly and repeatedly, the needle will go out of alignment with the track causing jam and worst still a broken needle. So remember after each sewing action when you need to cut the string, pull it gently using both hands. One to above the needle and the other pulling the slack from the needle hole. Never use one hand to tug from the needle hole. If you don't understand what I mean, trying tugging the string towards you and you can see the needle actually bend slightly. Cheers!

    Hi Laura, I think you must have heard me this week as my new needles (from overseas) kept breaking my thread after only a few stitches. It didn't matter which size needle I used on the cotton fabric - the correct or incorrect one - continuously kept breaking my thread- regardless of what thread I used, too. I changed back to my regular needles and no problem.
    So I don't know why these overseas needles are not working. I would also love to see a tutorial on which size needles to use on which fabric. You explain things so well, I think many would benefit from it. I know I would. I just can't keep it straight in my mind. Thank you, Kathleen

    • @jojosewist8921
      @jojosewist8921 4 года назад +2

      Of course if your bibbin is wound w/o having to remove from the machine, this wont work. I have also used a bendable straw (the type to make drinking easier for kids) on the horizontal spool holder, then bending up the drinking end and using the small spools of thread vertically on this. The straw will be shaped like a capital L, if straw seems too flimsy use a cut pc of a larger straight straw over the bendable straw to increase its strength. Play around with it, it really will work if thread spool isnt too big. Hope these udeas help, snd made sense to you.

Had been using 4 for a while without issue, but loosening it to 3 and also making sure there is a distinct tug while the thread is in the path is apparent. After that, we're good... except now I have to replace the dang set of broken needles...lol

    1. Thread is knotting
    2. Thread is not on properly
    3. Notches in the thread spool
    4. Other pressure on the thread
    5. Incorrect bobbin
    6. Large buildup of lint
    7. Needle isn't all the way inserted
    8. Pressure on the fabric (pushing or pulling)

    10. Small bends become big bends (change the needs often)

    • @candicebuerer867

      The thread breakage can be caused by several things. Be sure the Needle size is large enough for the size of thread to slip through easily. You can also loosen the thread tension if it's too tight. And also, as the video says, the position of the thread spoon can make a big difference. If the spool is horizontal when it should be vertical, the thread will twist and that twist will build up and no longer fit through the needle --then it will shred.

    Thank You for explaining all this for us. I just bought myself a new machine. Well, I was making a cat bed using an old scrap sheet. ( It is a poly - cotton material.) Anyway, when I folded the material in the shape I wanted it, I saw how there were many layers I needed to sew through. Sooo, I changed my needle to a denim needle. I checked to make sure my stitch width wasn't too wide for the presser foot (regular) I was using, started sewing, got about an inch and a half or two in, and, my needle broke after I heard a loud and dull "ping - like" sound. The stitches I had completed were not "nested" on either side, so, I don't think I had my machine threaded wrong. However, I did notice how the presser foot was "riding" a little high. But, it worked for those couple of inches. Why do you suppose my needle could have broken ? (When I threaded the machine, I did a "see - saw" test to make sure my thread was in the tension guide (?) in the first front - vertical side of the thread guide.) Could the problem have been that, even though it was a soft poly - cotton blend fabric, there were just too many layers for the needle to go through ? And, I'm almost positive the thread didn't get caught on the spool - it may have, though ... I'll be more mindful of the way the thread comes off the spools from now on. (BTW, I bought a Singer Heavy Duty machine.) I appreciate your help and any advice you can give me.

    Interesting about the thread. Most machines, and the few I have only have horizontal spindles. A machine may have an additional spindle, that’s not permanent, mostly used for a double needle. Gosh, so what do you recommend? Buying thread that will go on the horizon spindle? Even the manufacturer booklet shows putting thread on horizontal spindle. :(

    SHLM UHaB (peace &love). Tudah Rbah (thank you very much) for your videos. They have been so helpful and I am grateful. When my machine broke, after 30 years or so (my mom bought it for she and me in my 20's and it broke in my 50's), I just now hand stitch and have not looked back. What a delight it has been. I know that on the 2nd world-wide Exodus, (Isaiah 11:11-16), I do not want a bunch of heavy items to take with me, so I asked Yah to help my lighten what I have in my house. Before I leave, let me tell you, the Name of the Creator is Hayah asher Hayah (Exodus 3:13-14). There is a curse to the G-o-d name (Isaiah 65:11-12), but the English Scriptures is a derivative of the Latin Vulgate, and that warning is hid from us. But the Hebrew Scriptures preserved the warning telling us NOT to set a table for G-o-d. Also, any who received the Messiah as their Savior must do the 7 appointed times (Leviticus 23), but no more animal sacrifices, following the crucifixion and Resurrection of the Messiah. We are now of the order of MLK TSDQ. to Whom ABRaHM tithed.
