Hello, I like to change how a can light in the ceiling for a walk-in shower. currently, there is a 40-watt incandescent light bulb connected to a light switch. Not sure which way to approach the update for this. Change the light switch to a wifi dimmer and add a LED light bulb because the 40-watt was hot in the can. Should I keep the light switch and add a smart bulb? I have a smart hub. Thanks for the help
I've always wanted to make a video like this. Grabbing a bunch of off the shelf bulbs and putting them head to head. Great to see an idea I never would have actually made is out there and you did it perfectly
Good call on the Feits. I returned them after a few weeks due to unreliable connectivity. The SmartThings are great for simpler utility needs and very reliable. I have them in the carriage lamp fixtures on my house exterior and tie them to my doorbell which gives me effective motion triggered lights. Rather than just turning on for motion I have the lights come on dimmed and off with sunset and sunrise, but brighten for 15m if motion is detected.
I ordered the Wiz A21 bulbs plus the remote, they were a good deal and after the poor quality performance of the current amazon find bulbs I'm going with a much higher quality (hopefully) smart bulb. Thanks for all the info and input, really helpful and appreciated!
I'd say IKEA tradfri. They have a decent range that is overall inexpensive. Functionality is much better with the Smartthings hub, so I would avoid getting an IKEA hub
C by GE was (is?) on sale for less than $20 per bulb for the full colour one that Smart Home Solver reviewed in this video. It is actually one of the brightest smart bulbs around right now. I think the technology still needs to improve in terms of making them brighter across the board.
@@filmbyben2 I bought a bunch of IKEA Tradfri products recently. I couldn't even connect to the hub after trying for several hours. I gave up and ordered a zigbee stick from Amazon to use with Home Assistant.
How is it that these smart home youtubers have the most beautiful wives? Do I need to buy more smart home products in order to punch above my weight? (please consider this funny rather than creepy).
I’m on team yeelight. I bought a couple colored yeelights for cheap on AliExpress. The app is surprisingly well made and the bulb has great whites, warms, and colors. It also works with HomeKit.
@@DanStephenson some would argue this is an advantage because you don’t have to worry about expensive hubs. For me, I don’t have many smart home devices, so WiFi based devices are my friends.
Tried Sengled bluetooth bulbs and after a while they didnt want to connect to the Alexa system anymore. The Yeelights can be a little shakey with their connection too. The Feits in my lamps while the colors are dim, they whites are good and they are good about keeping a connection.
An overlooked or at least, under discussed feature of smart bulbs is the integration with the actual light switch. As someone new to the smart bulb scene, this is by far the most confusing topic. If I don’t want my light switches to essentially be “hard wired” to the light bulbs, what is the best smart light / switch combo? I say this as someone who likes physical controls to remain useful. Maybe in the future, smart bulbs will be the norm and all lights will be ‘hard wired’ and controls can be added by consumers anywhere in the home, until then it’s important to have smart light / switch combinations like halo, c by ge, hue, and maybe others. Would appreciate a video discussing this. No one wants to have the switch covers in their home amirite ?
I love these types of comparisons. I'm using Lifx 1100 bulbs in my most important fixtures but given how I've missed stock and sales, I think I'm going to back fill my other less important lights with 100w Wiz. Brightness is a big deal to me and currently Home Depot will include a remote if you buy at 2 pack of them. Given their less than half of the $60 asking price for LIfx, I think I they'll do the job well.
Bought the Wiz A21 bulbs and wound up very disappointed in its white range compared to my Lifx. The whites in the Wiz remain warm up to about 5800k, at which point the bulb dims significantly and casts almost like a green tint, whereas Lifx pumps out a much brighter, cleaner white on the cool side. I feel spoiled by Lifx and it's color temperature representation compared to most smart lights I tried. Looking at Novastella as well, but I figured I'd end up just as disappointed. Perhaps I'll just pay up for all Lifx
I love my C by GE Smart lights. You set up and use with Google home. Mine didn't come with a remote but I don't need it. Everything is changed on command with Google. I barely ever use the GE app. The resetting is bad I do agree. The buld itself is great when used with Google Home.
Excellent review. I love my WiZ bulbs. The A19, BR30 and LED strips all pair well together. They also work in HomeKit using Homebridge. And are now fully integrated into Home Assistant. However, I would caution against using too many WiFi bulbs and hope that WiZ will consider a Thread version. I am very disappointed that Costco stopped carrying WiZ in favor of the Feit Electric brand!
It is always a risk to watch these reviews after I already settled on and bought the product, but I am happy with my WiZ lights in general. Getting the bulbs can sometimes be a challenge, since you have to disable the 5 GHz band on the router when pairing, or else they freak out and won't register. But once they are registered and set up in Google Home, they work a treat. I really just wanted them so that we could get a different color temperature in the kitchen, and they solved that for me perfectly.
I have a bunch of CbyGE bulbs & switches like them quite a bit. You are correct though the app is frustrating. Only needed for setup though, works trouble free through Google Home app once linked. I really enjoy their functionality though. Having hard switches that actually function with Smart Bulbs makes them my choice. Will be rebranded with new app with the sale of GE Lighting to Savant. Fingers crossed it resolves app issues.
Looking forward to your best of video on these. I'm so confused by all the smart bulb options! I just want to find one that is affordable and I can use without a hub, and that can be controlled by Alexa. I need it for a lamp that presently has 3 brightness settings. You rock Reed!
Hey Reed, I heard you mention Geeni in this video. I've started my smart bulb collection with the Geeni platform. There are different products, and the ones I started with came from Walmart which are branded Merkury which use the Geeni App. My experience has been good colors, though not as bright as the white range, but the colors are deep. The ones from Walmart are fixed white balance, but I have a Geeni Prisma from Amazon that's a 60w 800 Lumen and does both color and tunable white. One thing I've recently observed as well, is the newer generations of bulbs. e.g. bulbs I've purchased more recently of the same product line seem to have better colors . I never invested in the more expensive bulbs because I never needed the features they offer, and the ones I've been using just seem to work. I have been on the look out though for other bulbs to try though, without breaking the bank. The Merkury bulbs from Walmart are 75w equiv, and rated at 1050 Lumen.
You should use manual control on the camera when you video the bulbs. Set a high aperture and a low(-ish) shutter speed. That way you will remove the banding issue you have at 7:21 . You could probably use shutter priority and set the shutter speed and let the camera control the aperture
Thanks for the shoutout! A great group of bulbs to be in the mix with :) We didn't anticipate the interest so far after their release so we are currently out of stock, however, we should be back in stock with our bulbs early next year! -Brianna | Marketing Manager

I feel like if they were zigbee or Z-Wave compatible they may be a little more solid. I still think we're 3-5 years away from having a system that just works and isn't really expensive or super difficult to put together. Hubitat is pretty decent, just sucks there isn't more built-in to work more easily when it is first removed from the box. Come on, Hubitat, can't you already have the bare minimum already installed, like the dashboard?
@@MicahFunk I love the quality of the LIFX bulbs, too. If they weren’t WIFI I’d have them all over the house. Or make them integrate better with Hue or Hubitat (the two hubs I already own). Well, that doesn’t seem likely to happen. Which is why I’m looking for a Zigbee alternative.

I'm thinking Lifx is going to be the best bet, especially to get the higher kelvin to actually see what you're doing in a room. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
Great comparison I have mixed feeling on c by ge I have a c by ge Bluetooth bulb in my bedroom I disconnected it from my google home hub and to reconnect it I had to buy the c by ge smart plug with Wi-Fi
I'm interested in Wiz. I bought a yeelight w3 multicolor and the maximum brightness of warm color 2700k is way too dim. I wonder if Wiz At very warm colors are bright?
Have you tried bulbs from Gledopto (chinese brand)? They have 6W and 12W bulbs. I use their light strips and light strip controllers, which are pretty good for the price (10m light strip (2 x 5m) is cheaper than 4m Phillips hue).
I don't have WiFi at my place. Is the C by GE truly bluetooth? As in, can I connect via my phone's bluetooth and control it from there? If not, any bright, multi-color lightbulb that can?
Hey, Smart Home Solver! AWESOME video! I love all of the videos you make, but you smart lighting videos are amazing! Have you ever reviewed or used VOCOlinc smart bulbs? I use HomeKit for my smart home. The new L3 colors bulbs are tempting me!

Hi man, Do you have any tricks to get notified if grid power goes off because my home power backup is directly connected to my home so if the power goes off it just gives some 3 to 5 beeps that's all. so, is there are any suggestions?
Hey Reid! How can I detect when my dog goes into the basement? He shouldn’t be allowed to go down there but sometimes he sneaks down! I would love to incorporate this into my existing smart home. Thoughts? Thanks!!
I'm waiting for you to review the Govee smart light bulb. They make really good led strips, so I'd like to know how their bulb fares when lined up against others you've reviewed.
I have a question. I've been adding Govee Wifi bulbs in the house, and using Google Hub/Assistant. However, I don't always want to shout at Google to turn the lights on and off. If we use the standard switches now, turn the bulbs off then leave the house, you lose all the control. I want to make it easier for myself and my girlfriend to flip a switch. Is there a good solution to have the best of both worlds? Most of the bulb sockets have multiple light switches on the walls.
Would like to see reviews on recessed downlights that can connect via zigbee. I just installed 16 gledopto fixtures. One of the few I've found that do rgb cc/cw and will work with a Hue hub and other zigbee systems. The blue color is the only thing that is slightly disappointing, since it's a bit purple-ish. Their cool/warm whites are Very bright
Love your reviews. Can I offer one suggestion for future videos. Could you just touch on each app's features. I was looking at these to come on and off at scheduled time at specific kelvin and brightness. I'm wanting to get one to use over a gold fish planted bowl for raising shrimp so want to schedule time and have it come on at a certain brightness. I think the Wiz one should do it. Cheers
Great video! One question: all things considered, if you have to choose between WiZ and Yeelight, which one would you pick? They're the only two brands I can get easily where I live.
I have a C By GE lightbulb and I can’t connect it too my wifi I’m on the same wifi network as my iPhone and I enter my password and it tells me that there’s an unknown error while connecting

One of the few I've found that do rgb cc/cw and will work with a Hue hub and other zigbee systems. The blue color is the only thing that is slightly disappointing, since it's a bit purple-ish. Their cool/warm whites are Very bright
Is it possible to you use ikea dimmer switch to control a ikea color lamp without a bridge?
feit products can be used in the tuya app
Love your reviews.
Can I offer one suggestion for future videos. Could you just touch on each app's features.
I was looking at these to come on and off at scheduled time at specific kelvin and brightness.
I'm wanting to get one to use over a gold fish planted bowl for raising shrimp so want to schedule time and have it come on at a certain brightness.
I think the Wiz one should do it.
Cheers
Hi, where can I buy that triangle lamp base?
How do their power consumptions compare when the lights are off which is a lot of the time...
For color is there anything better then yeelight or lifix? I also say yeelight has a mode to flash to music do other bulbs have this?
Can I connect a regular smart bulb to zigbee or does it have to be a specified one?
While C by GE isn’t perfect, I love the Bluetooth feature
The remote does work well.
The pico remote like solution is its best feature. I would go for the Wiz bulbs if their remote had a wallmount.
Great video! One question: all things considered, if you have to choose between WiZ and Yeelight, which one would you pick? They're the only two brands I can get easily where I live.
what led smart bulb would i buy if i strictly want rgb? i want the brightest and best color rgb bulb possible.
Have you tried the NEXXT solutions bulbs?
if i had a ceiling fan with 4 spots for bulbs, which bulbs would you recommend?
Hey Smart Home Solver. Whats the best bulb option for HomeKit (with or without HomeBridge)?
Thanks. What smart light could you recommend for use in the kitchen. I have one overhead fixture and I have Alexa... no hub.
Can you do a comparison of smart lights that specifically work for HomeKit
Hello. Thank you for the information. Question: is there an easy way to change the router password, without having to re-setup every light bulb?
I have a C By GE lightbulb and I can’t connect it too my wifi I’m on the same wifi network as my iPhone and I enter my password and it tells me that there’s an unknown error while connecting
I need help! I got a bunch of c by ge light bulbs and i want to get a smart hub but idk what hub is compatible because the bulbs are bluetooth
Was wondering why didnt you do mercury smart lights? On a budget I got those for like 12-14 bucks.
I added them to the previous smart bulb comparison video. Geeni actually uses the same app.
Where did you get that socket that the bulb it in on the counter?
