You know a game is bad when the corny, over-acted cutscenes with MSPaint-esque animation are the BEST part.

Hotel Mario is the strangest interpretation of the Monty Hall problem I've ever seen. It's like there's a goat behind every door.
If you pause the animations, it looks like something you draw in Paint during lunchtime
"Yeah Framerater!" is forever BURNED into my mind. When I dream, I dream of those words. They haunt me. Carved deep into my psyche they refuse to give me respite.
I remember years ago, there was this project being made, I think it was called either "Open Hotel Mario" or "Hotel Mario Open"; All I remember was that it was gonna be open-source, and that the cutscenes would be modified to be in an open-matte format, instead of being slightly letterboxed.

Hotel Mario on CD-i does seem like a fun concept.
It's not really a games machine anyway.
You shouldn't play it because it will ruin every other Mario game you'll play after. Nintendo hasn't made a game yet that can compete with a masterpiece of this caliber.

Something about the title triggered that part of me that instinctively acts like a racoon that was just told to stop going through somebody's garbage. Like, all you did was make me want to do it more
Just a reminder this is considered one of the best CD-i games, so you can put that in perspective.
7:27 convinced me to never ever touch this game
This game feels like a simpler and more annoying version of the NES game "Wrecking Crew", but instead of Mario breaking everything he is only closing doors, while trying to get from place to place. The elevator arrows and animation style reminds me of "Wrecking Crew '98" also.

Given the title of the video, and the state of CD-I consoles, I was expecting this video to talk about to console destroying bug in this game.

Phillips got to use Zelda and Mario because they were working with Nintendo on SNES for a CD drive, and that fell through. Nintendo also used to have... pleasure hotels. Bowser taking the princess to a hotel is pretty suggestive in and of itself. All this to say I wonder if they intentionally did this as an inside dig at Nintendo.

Me i found hotel mario a very original concept and to be a very good game,i can’t believe it never was rereleased on the virtual console at all.

Hotel Mario seems like a shame since conceptually, it looks like a lot of fun, but judging by this and a lot of other reviews I've seen on it, there just wasn't enough quality control to make it a good game. I know it probably won't happen, but if Nintendo were to try its hands at remaking the game and fixing the problems, they could probably make a good game out of it.
If you want to play a good version of this, try Robot Ninja Haggle Man on the DS.
It's part of a compilation, called Retro Game Challenge.

I've always wanted to play this, but some of these flaws that you mentioned have changed my mind. It did initially seem like something I could have some fun with. Thanks for the review!

I would agree with you if it werent for one little thing. The Producers seemed to figure this game is too much and gave players an option to skip to the Final Hotel. Making it one of the few games I was able to beat as a kid, while I was pretty bad. XD

I think a remaster would help with what's not a bad game, just needs the execution of the gameplay fixed like with the Zelda games.
My challenge is this - every time I see anything about Hotel Mario, I feel a swell of pity. This could have been a fun single-screen action-puzzle-game. All of the elements are there, and the core design is clearly an enjoyable idea. The problem is that it turns quickly into tedium and enemy spam.
I miss the Shantae ending so much

A remake of this game with a floor fix could do it wonders. I lowkey always wanted to play this but was like, nah, looks miserable.

Honestly, I feel like this is the one review from you I don't really agree with. I feel you were a little harsh on the game on this one. The game has its flaws, sure, but calling it worse than the Zelda games seems a little harsh to me.
I guess it's really just a tolerance thing because I haven't really had much issues with things like the timer and such. I will admit getting hit from enemies above and dealing with Wigglers is a pain though.
Will you ever make a part 2 to your psp emulator or make videos talking about the specific ports/ emulators since you talked about the psp they ported Friday night funkin Doki Doki Lit and fnaf 1 also will you ever video talk about the Dreamcast emulator that was recently released in 2021 also idk what download you used for the default Saturn emu but mine runs at 30 - 40 FPS a playable frame rate for Golden axe duels and 20 - 25 for panzer dragoon btw
There are hidden ways to make the stages easier though good luck figuring that on your own

To me it doesn't seem much worse than a lot of 80's arcade games. In fact, this is just SMB meets Elevator Action.
So much margin is wasted at the top and bottom of the screen, they could have easily stretched the levels vertically which would fix the problem of Mario getting killed by enemies above him when he jumps.
