  • i've had many of you ask me about setting up a kiln at home. there was very limited resources about this when i bought my kiln, especially for small home kilns and those on a budget and do not have the luxury of a basement/ garage at home, so i decided to share tips from my own experience with you!
    when considering a kiln for your apartment:
    1) shortlist kilns based on your needs/ limitations
    2) check kiln specifications
    3) check circuit breaker board (to see whether kiln can be used with current setup)
    4) narrow down electricity outlets that fit kiln plug
    5) pick an ideal location for firing
    see below for resource links:
    KILNS THAT YOU CAN CONSIDER WITHOUT REWIRING HOME
    - my kiln model (olympic MAS129E): www.clay-king....
    - other small kilns: www.clay-king.c...
    - medium kilns (consider these if your home has a dryer outlet, 220 - 240v, 30 amp breaker size, nema 14-30 outlet):

    ~ Olympic 1414E - www.clay-king....
    POTTERY FACEBOOK GROUPS (i had A LOT of help from these groups when setting up a studio. these communities have many potters ranging from beginner to experts who are super helpful and responsive. tip: try using the search bar in these groups to search for your query because chances are someone has asked the same question before.)

    This is all very useful. I’m impressed by your ability to adapt your space so well to your needs and it’s going to be very inspirational to people living in smaller spaces to show pottery can fit into many different conditions. You are generous and helpful with the information and to people in the comments and all the information is straightforward and easy to understand and it’s enjoyable to watch. Thank you very much. Respect and gratitude to you for these videos and to your work.

    Hi Audrey! I'm SO thankful for this video. I have been considering a small kiln, but the process of choosing the right one is a bit daunting. The fact that you covered the electrical requirements in such detail is a lifesaver (possibly literally. Lol). Great video & channel!

    Amazing! Thanks for explaining the whole process. I'm a beginning potter, and I too find firing to be a mysterious process. I'm very glad you included some safety information as well.

    You inspired me to purchase this kiln!! It arrives tomorrow. I’m curious, is there an option to vent it out through a window with some tubing? Or does it not have any cutouts? Thanks for the video, helped me greatly in deciding on a kiln

    you do beautiful work . and i agree with Deethevisualarchitect your videos are very soothing and very helpful. i am looking for a small electric kiln i am using an outside homemade brick wood fire kiln atm. but i would love to have an electric kiln. and congrats on your little one.

      thanks Kathryn! :) it's so cool that you have a wood fire kiln. did you build it yourself? firing it is so much more technical than an electric kiln! would love to do a wood firing one day. all the best for your kiln search!

    I've been looking for videos on firing in tiny spaces so thank you for making this video 💕 Also you mentioned selling this kiln recently on insta so congratulations! Quick question though, When you still had the kiln and fired at home did you seal the bottom of your door while firing with something (ie a towel on the outside) or did you just have the door closed and didn't mind too much about the tiny gap under the door being uncovered?

    Hi, this is such a great and inspiring video, i am thinking to buy one, but i was not sure about the electricity bill.how much more are you paying since using this if it s not to personal to ask?

    • @AudreyCCeramics
      @AudreyCCeramics  3 года назад +3

      i have not really calculated exact costs but i believe every firing costs me a few dollars for a kiln this size. you might wanna refer to this for a more accurate calculation: www.soulceramics.com/pages/cost-of-firing-ceramic-kiln

    Would I need a ventilation system, if I have a medium size kiln in my garage? What happens if I just leave the door open for the fumes to be let out, is that still okay?

    Thank you for posting video! So little out there on small kilns especially with video. Being a cone 8 kiln do you think you will have to replace the elements more often? Is the 3 key easy to use if you want to do custom programs? Thanks!

    • @AudreyCCeramics
      @AudreyCCeramics  3 года назад +1

      thank you! i had a hard time finding videos on small kilns which was why i decided to do this for reference. hope it helped! the advice for cone limits is to buy kilns that fire a few cones higher than the temperature that you usually do. i usually fire cone 6, so i guess, compared to a cone 10 kiln the elements might wear out faster than a cone 8 kiln? but i heard it's a lot to do with kiln maintanance as well (eg. vacuum the kiln often, make sure it's not dusty before each firing).
      the 3 key is pretty easy for custom programs. instead of using the cone firing mode, i use ramp-hold mode to set the no. of stages, rate and temperature.

    • @AudreyCCeramics
      @AudreyCCeramics  Год назад

      yes. but please ensure that the voltage and amp of the extension cord is equivalent of the kiln

    How hot does your bathroom get when you're running a glaze firing? My bathroom has a sprinkler by the ceiling so I'm trying to figure out if there's a risk of the heat from the kiln setting it off

    • @AudreyCCeramics
      @AudreyCCeramics  3 года назад +3

      not too hot for this kiln size, i would say maybe 90f? def not hot enough to trigger the sprinkler

    For how many hours do you fire your work?

    • @AudreyCCeramics
      @AudreyCCeramics  3 года назад +2

      depends on the cone temperature and speed of firing. a bisque firing usually takes 16 hrs in total (8 hrs firing + 8 hrs cooling). glaze firing around 20 hrs

    You should NOT be firing your Kiln without a proper ventilation system that goes to the air outside of your home! OMG, you are risking your health. Your bathroom vent is for humidity and is not sufficient enough for the gases from the kiln!

    • @AudreyCCeramics
      @AudreyCCeramics  2 года назад +2

      if you watched the video, i mentioned that i have a vent in my bathroom that i use to vent the gases out of the home. it works as ive no fumes in the rest of my home.
