George: You were a very gifted human being and a better musician. Thanks for giving us such a treasure, spending your short time thinking on our emotional and intelectual enjoyment. We have your brightness with us for endlessly. You live still every time we listen to your music. You set up an example of things well done. Thank you so much
I keep returning to this gorgeous performance. Since I discovered it I've been seeking other performances by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Thanks for posting so many!
This is scored for full orchestra, but it was written for a string quartet. It is a foretaste of what Gershwin might have done next. Shortly before his death he said he wanted to write chamber music after finishing his stint under Sam Goldwyn. I think he wanted to demonstrate that he did not need pizzazz and big forces to make an impression in the concert hall, and that his matchless abilities as a tunesmith were being increasingly reinforced by technical skills as a painter on a small canvas. He never stopped listening and trying for more.
One of the most beautiful compositions I have ever heard, thank you so much for such a gift of music!!❤

Allthough I agree, I dont think George has RUclips, wherever he might be now. I hope he has a piano and violins though.
@@1849ad George would be please that we can remember his music via whatever medium he could never imagine.
One of the most beautiful musical compositions of all time.
No kidding. This one goes right to the soul.
@@davidcastenholz597 - it certainly does.
The world stops when I hear Gershwin

It is truly stunning…
Excellent! Strings were wonderful.
A GREAT show
Thanks for the post. Beautiful lullaby, beautifully done.
The melody of course is wonderful, but the arrangement is what makes this piece work. I've been a Slatkin fan for years.!
such emotional stirrings mixed with subtle musical complexities. Beautiful!

GERSHWIN , Liszt , Strauss , Vivaldi tell me how beautifle you are. i think you make the best music

I read once that he was intending to work on a sequel to "Porgy and Bess." What might have been.
My highschool is playing this for our next concert. It’s one of my favorite songs by far 💜 I play the cello
Sublime
If you purchase the printed music, be sure to include the bass part!
I love what Slatkin does with this orchestra
Tirando a crise de tosse de uma pessoa na plateia no fim... Ficou muito bom
Triplet quarter notes are at 3:37 for anyone trying to practice :)
"Tell me, George, if you had it to do all over, would you fall in love with yourself again?"--Oscar Levant to his good friend George Gershwin.
A heart-stopping theme, somehow strung out a longish time. Hmmmm. -Daniel Goode
This sounds amazing but why so many people coughing in the background 💀
❤❤❤🎶🎶
good

Moving...
Who made the arrangement?
The only modern piece I like. Too bad for the two coughs at the end - done on purpose? Shameful, if so.
