  • With 100 days to go until the start of the Paris Olympics, French President Emmanuel Macron has warned the opening ceremony could be moved from its planned riverside location if the security risk is too high.
The 26 July event is set to be the first Olympic opening ceremony held outside a stadium setting and will see about 10,500 athletes parade through the heart of the capital on some 160 boats on the Seine along a 3.7-mile route.

An Olympics that requires so much security shows that the spirit of the Olympics is dead. To spend so much money over two weeks, is absolutely absurd. The world as it stands today does not deserve the Olympics. Do we tell the Israelis athletes to stay home, for fear of a repeat of 72? Does a country in conflict, which does not know how to live in peace, deserve to have athletes at the Olympics?

The Olympic Truce is a tradition originating from ancient Greece that dates back to 776 BC. A "truce" was announced before and during the Olympic Games to ensure the host city state was not attacked and athletes and spectators could travel safely to the Games and peacefully return to their respective countries.
In 1992, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) renewed this tradition by calling upon all nations to observe the Truce during the modern Games. The Truce was revived by United Nations Resolution 48/11 of 25 October 1993, as well by the United Nations Millennium Declaration relating to the world peace and security.
In 1996, the Athens Bid Committee committed to revive the Olympic Truce and promoting it to the world through the Olympic flame relay. Three years later, the IOC announced the establishment of the International Olympic Truce Foundation and the International Olympic Truce Centre in cooperation with Greece. The vision was to protect the interests of athletes and sport, and to promote peaceful principles in modern day. Each host city was encouraged to embrace the meaning and spirit of the Olympic Truce in the planning and staging of the Games.
As of 2022, the modern Olympic Truce starts one week before the main opening ceremony of the Olympic Games and ends one week after the closing ceremony of the Paralympic Games.

@@eastafrica1020 Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the IOC banned Russia and Belarus from the games for violating the Olympic Truce. Russian and Belarusian athletes may instead compete as "Individual Neutral Athletes" (AIN), as long as they did not "actively" support the war and therefore they should not carry the flag of the countries they are going to represent. Individual neutral athletes must be approved by each sport's international federation, but an international federation has the discretion not to approve any athletes in their sport. As individual athletes, AIN will not be considered a delegation during the opening ceremony or on official medal tables.
