Great review video. Thanks! If you like the gun (except for the last hundred or so rounds that you fired), Try putting another 300 rounds through it. If Canik does not have an under-engineered recoil spring assembly, the out of battery issue might clear up. I am a certified armourer for Glock and Berretta. The recoil spring is balanced with both the gun's recoil and the interface between the slide rails and frame rails. It is quite possible that the recoil spring found its true compression force before the slide worked in with the frame rails. I hope your viewers don't shoot me down for this, because it is true. I have seen this with many semi-automatic pistols over the years, including Glock, CZ, Canik, Colt. I have a Steyer that starting doing this after 200 rounds. Then, 200 rounds later, the issue went away. If Canik does learn that the recoil spring assembly is wrong for the gun, they will soon offer replacements. No, I do not work for either Canik or Century Arms, just saying.

I appreciate the input, thanks! 👍 And don’t worry about getting shot down, my subscribers are mostly reasonable people. I tend to repel the a-holes. Personally, I prefer guns that don’t need a 700+ round break-in period. And I don’t think I’m willing to drop another couple hundred bucks on ammo to find out. Regardless of the out of battery problem, it bugs me that the firing pin is capable of hitting the primer out of battery. So once it’s repaired and cleared by Century Arms, I’ll probably part with it. Lots of other incredible options on the market 👍

Kills me when I hear dudes saying “you have to run 5k rounds” through any new gun to trust it. They also need to reliaze any weapon can fuck up at anytime ? Why I try to go with something more proven.

Dunno what reviews you're watching, but personally I get tired of biased reviews that constantly harp on nonexistent negatives. For example: I watched a guys horribly biased review on the SUB2k. Certainly not a top of the line gun, but innovative, reliable and fun none the less. He constantly compared the little PCC to an AR-15 which is like comparing a Fiero to a Ferrari. He complained that it said "Glock 19" on the side. "Is that in case you forget what kind of ammo it takes?" Uh, my Glock 19 has the same thing printed on it. He complained that it was made of "plastic". (It's polymer.) He didn't mention that the stock, pistol grip and fore grip on his AR was made of the same stuff. The guy went on and on just digging for negative things to say. I shot this guy down countering every one of his negatives. No response.
This review wasn't bad. He honestly talks about his personal experience which is appreciated, but he is in the minority when it comes to experiencing the issues he described. I'd suggest simply locking the slide back and storing the pistol in his safe for a week or so and see if the issue clears up.

    Thanks for the heads up.
I honestly think most people who buy a carry/sd gun rarely shoot more than 500rds through it during the entire time they own it.
If they shoot it at all, it's a few mags to get a feel for it, then it goes in the nightstand and/or gets carried on occasion when they feel the need.
They aren't gun enthusiasts and don't train, don't watch RUclips videos about guns, and aren't worried that their gun won't work when they need it to, in the same way they expect a new car to start and run every time.
I appreciate your content and agree wholeheartedly about the diminished value of the paid promotion of new firearms in the guntuber space. I'd much rather see an actual legit test and assessment, backed up with logical reasoning. I find that consistently on your channel, so thank you and keep them coming.

Ironically my range gun is a Canik (SFT Pro) and I love it. The MC9 was at the top of my list for carry when I first saw it but then all the problems starting showing and I wouldn’t trust it as far as I can throw it. Update II: I previously reported 3 failures in 500 rounds with the new recoil assembly. However, I continued testing to 1000 rounds. I used 500 rounds of PMC Bronze and did not clean the gun since the 350 rounds (1650 rounds). My expectation was that the pistol would become less reliable over time. I was wrong. I had zero failures. I did have one slow slide return but I suspect that was from an underpowered round. Based on the guntuber who smoothed the frame and eliminated the failure to go into battery problem I hypothesize that the issue was poor quality on a batch of frames and not the recoil assembly causing it to take an inordinate amount breaking period to make the gun reliable. There will be a third update when I go back to the range and test this hypothesis by using the original recoil assembly. I now feel confident enough in the pistol to use in its intended role as a backup to my Shield Plus.

That is because your guide rod and spring are correctly installed and his isn’t. My bet is he cleaned the gun right before the horrible event and put the guide rod and spring in either slightly misaligned or more likely on the upper step of the barrel lock. It is a very common occurrence with new Canik owners on both the Elite (non-SC) and the METE MC 9. You will notice it if you know what you are seeing as soon as you put the slide on the frame. It just doesn’t feel quite right. Because it isn’t quite right:

My magazines drop out perfectly fine. Ticking time bomb - maybe/maybe not? With 200 round range days, it has never torn my hand up as you described. It has been a pleasure to shoot. (I also have a Rival with 2000+ rounds and it has been flawless.)

Got my SECOND replacement of this from Century Arms and still having nose diving issues and failure to return to battery? It seems they won't own up to it that there are known issues. First 300 rounds no issues, at 300-500 it was a crapshoot as to if it would chamber a round, get stuck in the bottom of the feedramp, magazine follower not work and stay in battery after the last round, or the reverse and stay out of battery with rounds still in mag. It's a shame but I've lost any confidence in this company and specific model and can't trust it. Wish there were more fully ambidextrous options in this size.

My friend and I both purchased the MC9, and had the same issues. Mine started after less then 20 rounds, his happened at over 50 but under 100 rounds. I was able to get a hold of someone at Canik initially and they told me it was a known issue and to email as well for replacement spring. That's what bothers me is it's a known issue and there is no recall or notice on Canik's website. Leading people to just think, Ill throw this on and I'm good to carry right off the bat. Which you should always train with your carry gun before you carry it, but honestly we all know many wont and just put it on because they are confident with other guns.
Also to note the spring did not arrive in time frame they told me it would, so I had to contact their support again to find out it never shipped to begin with. So i finally received tracking, and waiting on the spring to arrive this week. I also have a METE SFT, which I recommend to everyone and has been absolutely flawless. The conditions the gun is used in, how dirty the powder in the cartridges is and how much residue they leave. Some powders leave granules behind that get into the works. Does the lube last? Its a design flaw with some striker fired guns. When you maintain pressure on the trigger, during the firing sequence, (slide cycles and is returning to fully in battery) the trigger mechanism during the reset sequence can create additional drag causing the pistol to return to battery slowly or not at all. The manufacturer/importer tries to band-aid it by using a heavier recoil spring, obscuring one problem and creating another.
Try holding the trigger rearward under excess tension/pressure on a weapon that exhibits this problem (hanging up on the reset), then cycle the action, you'll notice when the trigger pressure is relaxed the weapon will return to battery somewhat normally.

I have an update. I received a new recoil spring and put the pistol through a 500 reliability test. There was a significant improvement but I still had 3 failures to go into battery. One at about 200 rounds. One at about 350 rounds and a final one at round 499. I fired 120 rounds one handed, 60 rounds with each hand and had zero failures. I also felt a couple of rounds where the slide felt slow but I was using weak 115 grain range ammo. I will run another 500 rounds through to see if things get worse or improve. At this point Indon't I am going to trust beyond an emergency and don't want to put it back in circulation. I guess I am stuck with it.

1000 rounds is my metric to reach without a repeated malfunction. 1 failure to eject, 1 out of battery issue, etc, I’m willing to blame on 1-2 in 1000 rounds of ammo not being up to par. That being said, I just got home from the range, and at about 700-900 rounds total through my MC9, I started experiencing issues. I physically cannot lock the slide back; it simply won’t go back far enough, even when I use the optic as a handle. I’ve emailed customer support and will see what comes of it. I’m hoping for a permanent fix, because until today, I’ve loved everything about this gun.

@@NightwoodGuns you’re definitely not full of crap. The issue was non-existent until I noticed I was struggling to lock the slide back in dry fire exercises a couple days ago. I cleaned it, oiled it, and even oiled the guide rod a little. When I went to the range today, I got through 100 rounds, no problem. The next 50 rounds gave me probably 15-20 malfunctions. My hope, of course, is that they’ve sorted it out by now, given how many people have reported the same issue. I swapped my p365 for the MC9, and I shoot the Canik a lot better. I’m expecting Canik will send me a new guide rod, and I’ll try to remember to update here after 1000 rounds or a repeat issue.

@@NightwoodGuns update so far: Canik is clearly well aware of the issue, since I described my issue, and they didn’t even ask any follow up questions, they just shipped me a new guide rod. The issue is that the larger, muzzle end recoil spring tends to bend at the base, protruding slightly. The new guide rod has a heavier spring, which hopefully will be a permanent fix. I’ve only put a hundred rounds through it, but for anyone having the same issue, the culprit is the larger diameter spring on the guide rod. I also went ahead and used a bench sander to file down the protruding bit of spring on the old guide rod, which also works, so in a pinch, I have a backup. I’ll try to remember to come back and update after 1000 rounds. If the problem resurfaces, I’m gonna ask them to swap it out for a TP9 SC, since it’s a similar size, just wider. My TP9 Elite SF has been flawless, so I would expect similar reliability from the SC, but hopefully it doesn’t come to that.
PS. I emailed Century Arms about this problem, and they got back to me the same day to tell me that my new guide rod was on order. It took a couple weeks to arrive, but they got on it right away, so that’s worth noting. The response was immediate, no runaround whatsoever, so kudos to them for not beating around the bush at all.

Here's the thing, Canik started out rocky. It took them a few guns to figure it out. Their later model TP and Mete lines had excellent reliability and probably the best out of the box triggers for mass manufactured guns. Then they make an all new design that uses very little of what’s proven in their other guns and barely test it. The MC9 so far has been a bit iffy with reliability, if you look all over various forums, the Canik subreddit and quite a few vids, its had some issues, whereas their other line of pistols pretty much have no problems. Also Canik themselves say its fine to pronounce it as "Kenik".

@nightwoodguns I know this video is a couple of months old. it JUST popped up in my recommendations, so I wanted to give it a watch.
I was listening to the problems that you were documenting, and then, at 5:45 where you showed the slowmo of your wife having one of the issues pretty much decided it for me.
I'm very convinced that the problem is somewhere in the trigger bar hitting areas that it's not supposed to. In the slowmo, I can clearly see the slide go back into battery when your wife lets off the trigger.
Dead trigger, light strikes, failure to go into battery, are all symptoms (when combined) of a trigger bar interfering with the movement of the slide, or the striker.
I have a running theory that that polymer used in the frame is too thin. And it's warping. (Evidenced by the issue that some users are getting with their mags not dropping free after a lot of use). Which is changing the internal specs on the trigger bar travel areas.

    • @NightwoodGuns
      @NightwoodGuns  Год назад +2

@@NightwoodGuns Take the slide off, and slowly work the trigger so that you can watch the bar. Take a look for wear there where it should be catching the striker or striker release. Also look to see if it is pushing back too far in the rear.
And look to see if it is rubbing on anything there in it's travel groove. Particularly corners of the frame.
Sometimes it's the spec on the bar. Slightly not cut to measurement, or a bend or curve that is off by a few degrees.
It could also be frame shift. If it's rubbing the frame, take some medium sandpaper and ease down the wear spot. Then light grit to polish and smooth it.
My theory is more towards the very end away from the trigger tho. Either being too long, and too much pressure against the rear, which is why it's not going into batttery. Then releasing when let off the trigger.
Or that it's causing the striker to not fully release, which is keeping the slide from fully going back into battery.

Dude not sure why I’m just finding you now but, subbed and really appreciate this video. Greg at OG Danger (?) I believe just had a vid w/ one he bought and the slide wouldn’t lock back. Definitely staying away
