  • This is a demo of a 1967 Marshall JTM50 amplifier head. The sound was recorded using a close/dynamic, distance/condenser microphone pairing into a Tascam digital recorder. It was edited and dubbed using Cubase and Windows Moviemaker. No EQ or compression were used at any stage. Some spot - adjustments were made to the condenser mic level in order to make my amateurish ramblings a wee bit more intelligible.
Here are some pics of the innards etc: s477.photobucke...

My tech is doing a spec build of this exact model. With the addition of a push/pull bright cap, switch between SS and tube rectification, and a switch between single to split cathode circuit for a dip into Super Lead territory. In red tolex. This already feels life changing.

i cant figure out if i love the amp more,or the player. thats one of the best sounding 50 watt marshalls ive heard on you tube, but the player is fantastic too. ive watched all his videos and love his playing! i wish he would do more videos of his wonderfull amp and guitar collection, and maybe just him playing, jamming so to speak!

Nothing pleases me more than someone who only dabbles, putting a rare amp through its paces and making every hair on the back of my neck stand on end. Fantastic.

Attenuating is not a 'sin'. I get satisfying tone from attenuation and even cab emulation. I have played live since the 90's and know the difference.

So nice to hear an amp demo-ed by someone whose playing skills are so smooth and varied. I get a bit tired of endless power chords and bluesy noodling. Great tone from that amp. Wonderful playing. Subscribed.

+Jordon Collins - It's actually a semi-hollow, Jordon - same construction as say, an es335. A full semi-acoustic would squeal like a pig at that volume.

I think what you're seeing is the chrome-finished dustcaps of the top speakers, which are McKenzies. The bottom two speakers are Celestion. The light coloured object in the bottom right of the cabinet is the vocal grille of the sm58 mic.

Hi Jake - The guitar is a Gibson es135. It's more or less, a different-shaped es335, in that it has the same pickups (Classic 57s) and a feedback-defeating centre-block. In truth, the whole setup is on the brink of microphonic feedback when I turn it up - you can hear it in places.

Great playing and tone! Is your guitar solid down the center? I’m surprised you didn’t have much trouble with feedback with that volume level and proximity to the amp. For me, I think 1967 is my favorite year for Plexi amps with Kossoff’s being among the best of the best.

  • @zachariahwade8482

I don’t understand how you can sit in front of a fully cranked 50 watter without going deaf. My stock 71 1987 cranked would re-arrange my innards. I use an attenuator at -8db and even with the amp only on 5 it’s at rock band volumes.
    Anyway, great playing and tone.

Hi - the amp was never mine; I demo'd it for a friend. I'm afraid it's off to collectorland now, but I took some pics, which you'll find in the link I've added to the description. It's valve rectified, by the way. GZ34, off the top of my head. :-)

Great sounding amp. The fact that its so quiet and that you can dime it is amazing considering it's age. Looks like the amp has been converted to earlier filtering with either a 16uF or 32uF node for V1 and V2. Am I right?
