The song "Daddy" is about Jonathan (the lead singer) being abused as a child by a babysitter. It took him and the band 22 years before they would perform the song live on stage. The person in question had died at that point. It's an extremely emotional song.

It’s crazy to think that the “are you ready” line was the very first line ppl heard from KoRn. It’s almost as if he’s saying that not just to hype up the song itself or the album, but an entirely new era of rock and metal.

You like koRn? Their early work lay the foundation for Nu Metal but when Life Is Peachy came out in '96, I think they really came into their own. Commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound and a new sheen of dark humour that really gives each song a feeling of ethereal dread. They've been compared to Limp Bizkit but I think koRn have a more bitter, cynical sense of humour.
In '98, koRn released "Follow The Leader," their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpeice is "Freak On A Leash." A song so catchy most people probably don't even listen to the lyrics, but they should! ...Because it's not just about a stray cartoon bullet going on a perilous adventure in the real world, it's a symbolic statement about the fragility of life and about the band itself.

Korn always had the skill to put very relatable music, almost all their albums have strong emotionally crushing moments. In the firsts albums they were young, a lot of anger, specially from the singer Jonathan Davis who was sexually abused, so the lyrics are about that or drugs. But then the fame put their members on personal decadence, so in the mid era of korn some members left and the anger turned into that (the guitarist took it worst, he left the band to start a christian project, but some years ago they returned to the band and they are back as a family). Now in their last album released in 2019 the singer lost his wife some months ago, and that is reflected on "The nothing" 2019 album, and is so sad so listen, he starts the album crying in the first song and ends with the most honest and hopeless sense of personal defeat I've heard in music. Becase Korn music grows with them, Daddy is the anger of being abused by an adult, but the sadness of losing someone when now YOU are the father of your kids is something harder, way beyond just anger.
Is interesting some context too, metal in those years was not this kind of vulnerable and open, lyrics were about anger with politics, protest against war, being rude, fantasy, grandiloquent themes. But korn was one of the first band who started the idea of showing how vulnerable and defeated someone can be, in first person in the most raw and unrefined way possible. And you can see this in most of the first nu-metal bands from the 90's. Then the genre lost that creepy and disturbing part to be more commercial, but the vulnerability side never left, just changed subgenre, specially towards the "core" ones, then even prog with Leprous being a good example of that.

    • @mollyesanborn
      @mollyesanborn  2 года назад +10

Great comment! Yeah, I've only heard this first album from them but it's already clear to me that they infuse a lot of vulnerability and personal topics into their music. @@mollyesanborn a lot of bands like Korn, A Perfect Circle, Tallah, My Ticket Home, and every band ever since has a lot owed to Pantera, Fear Factory, and especially Sepultura. Korn talks very highly of Sepultura oh and the rhythm that you're hearing and describing is what we call In heavy music Groove. It's hands down the most important subgenre as far as influence on modern metal I can honestly say if it weren't for the Groove Metal genre we couldn't have modern subgenres such as Metalcore, Nu Metal, Deathcore, Djent, Nu Metalcore, etc. And surprisingly all those genres have a lot of common factors akin to Groove Metal like low tunings, heavy & simple riffs, slow sonic sounding tempos, and an overall sound that when you hear you live you most likely gonna move that's the Groove that came from Groove Metal that is still felt to this day

Hi Molly, what a great reaction, the full KoRn album, brill idea. Brings back a lot of memories to the mid/later 90's when I heard this album the first time. Your descriptions about angst, anger, emotions, raw, dark, atmosphere, are all very true. KoRn created this sound, really one of a kind. Thanks, or due to, the horrible experiences by mainly Jonathan, this album was created, bringing comfort and joy to people. This was great! Honestly this is the first video I've watched of yours and I absolutely loved it. This is my all-time favorite album and it's such a trip to watch somebody first discover it live, like this. I actually got nervous for you before daddy started. That track hits everybody like a ton of bricks no matter what. I heard this album for the first time in the eighth grade and when that song came on, I froze. Unbelievable.
They've been my all-time favorite band since. I've seen them 51 times and one of my old bands has had the absolute honor to play a show with them. I'll never forget that day as long as I live. @@mollyesanborn oh for sure! You definitely did it justice! That album has opened so many doors for bands after them. Such an influential band. As you listen to their discography, you can definitely hear the evolution. You rarely hear the same album twice. Their second album Life is peachy is similar to their self-titled with the rawness and whatnot, but as they progress they get experimental as all hell in the best way!
Oh yeah playing with them was so cool. It was just unreal! I get all giddy just thinking about it lol. That was back in 2009. Had the privilege of seeing them again back in October. Most of the band ended up getting covid believe it or not but they're doing well now.

Yeah it was very trendy for a short time, even bands that should know better like Slayer and Sepultura started incorporating elements of it into their sound. Thankfully it flamed out quickly but it was an interesting moment in time. Not saying all nu-metal is bad but it got way overexposed and commercialized, then Limp Bizkit came along and put it out of its misery.

I first listened to this album 14 years ago and it's still one of my favourites of all time. I love the riffs, the rhythm, all the guitar effects, the bass and the raw emotional vocals. Jonathan Davis does all the vocals with the exception of Ball Tongue and Lies, where you can hear some background vocals by the guitarist Brian "Head" Welch. The story behind Daddy is that the lyrics are about the singer being abused as a child by his babysitter and when he told about it to his parents, they wouldn't believe him. Back in the day the band would perform the song live only about three times, because the lyrics are so personal for Jonathan, that he started crying everytime. That's why everytime they recorded that song for the album, they kept recording even after the song was over. Since then Jonathan refused to perform the song until they did a tour for the 20th anniversary of this album and even after 20 years he got really emotional on stage. Also one of the reasons why this album is so raw and emotional, is the producer Ross Robinson, who basically pulled out the emotions out of the entire band. Can't wait for you to react to the rest of the discography. The second album, Life is Peachy, has a guest performance by Chino from Deftones on the song Wicked, which is a cover of a song by Ice Cube.

I still remember the first time hearing this album...middle school, sitting in the auditorium during some bs speech giver about something that I didn't care about then (or now), a friend handing me his headphones (connected to a Walkman, with a cassette in it, which really dates this story), him saying "check this shit out", him hitting play and Blind starts...I was blown away by a sound I'd never heard before at that time, and by the time track 4 rolled around (Clown), I was sold and went out that weekend and picked up that CD. Such a great time back in those days, brings back a lot of great memories...hard to believe that was actually 28 years ago! Where has the time, and the years, went to?? Time flies, for real. 🤔

Along with the follow up Life Is Peachy (which I also recommend), this debut is definitely Korn's best piece of work, while the rest of their discography is...discontinuous, I would say: there are some great records like Follow The Leader and Issues (although they're not on the same level as this one and Life Is Peachy), some that are ok like Untouchables and The Serenity Of Suffering, some forgettable ones like Take A Look In The Mirror, and some...well, let's just call them "meh" ^^'

The story behind Daddy is very dark, the song is about Jonathan Davis (the singer). When he was a kid, he was raped by his babysitter, and then when he told his parents they didn't believe him, so it really traumatized him and scarred him for life. So thats why he broke down and cried, but before the recording of the song, he told his band members to keep playing if he would get too emotional. It really is a deep song lyrically and is among the darkest songs by KoЯn.

All KoRn and what they do, but different spins on the whole thing too (roughly around 2007 to 2011 or so). Issues, as mentioned, it also really good. Certainly check that out. I noticed you did one on Life is Peachy...I'll be watching that one next, but their following record to that, Follow the Leader, is IMO another one to take a listen to.

So much I want to say, but you might as well take your time & check out all of the Korn albums slowly; it’s a very interesting journey. I remember listening to this in the 90s. It starts out fun and interesting and disolves in to pain and sadness. People "media" used to think they were promoting child abuse but the lyrics are dealing with the singer's own abuse as a child.

They are massive band and 13 albums later they are still realy good
The band pioneer the nu metal genre and bring it into the mainstream
Munkey and Head on guitar making intresting noises and very new and original at the time, one of the first who popularised 7string guitars
Fieldy at the bass guitar very unique slapps and tone sound
David Silveria the drummer, great groove, the spine of korn, he split with the band in 2007
Ray Luzier replaced him-awsome metal drummer
    Jonathan Davis on vocals/bagpipes
Jonathan roots are scottish that is probably why he plays bagpipes
He wears kilt on stage and has veary unique microphone stand
He has been through a lot of shit in hes life ..child abuse, highschool abuse..
If you whant to her more from them just to heads up, first 3 albums are veary similar, first 4 albums are fav by fans

I have reviewed See you on the Other Side in the comment section of your reaction video and was thinking, you probably have some more reaction videos of Korn. When talking about Korn Albums, I have my „big 3“, and the debut album of Korn is one of my three favorite Korn albums (not sure which of the three is my favorite though, I keep changing my mind about it), so here my thoughts on the album track by track and how it became to me one of the greatest albums I ever listened to.
    1. Blind -
Immediately loved the riff and the song in general. The first time I listened to it was watching Street Fighter the Animiated Movie as a kid, it was a soundtrack, and I was like: Hey, this song is so cool, but I only understood a few years later that this song is from what would be my favorite band ever.
    2. Ball Tongue -
If we had a best off of Korn Riffs, the main riff of this song would be high up on the list as well, love the intensity of the vocals. Nowadays we here all kinds of vocalists screaming and expressing their anger, but this one just feels so real. And the song, like you said, unpredictable, with those groovy elements and sometimes even Hip-Hop like beats in an other wise fast-paced heavy metal environment. Another great Song.
    3: Need to
Because you said you are not sure if it is the same vocalist in the chorus: It shows how amazing Jonathan as a vocalist is, switching from desperate, hateful screams to a sound, soft voice (and years later it would improve so much more). Again, this song immediately helped me release so many of those emotions I could relate to lyric-wise, because og how he sings and screams it, the anger, the pain, it feels so real. Again a great song.
    4. Clown
The chromatic intervals of the guitar are so fitting to the title of the song, as the typical circus-clown-melody is also composed chromatically, and this combined with Korn’s dark sound perfectly fits to the dark topic of being bullied and attacked, which in turn eventually makes you start hating the world and becoming radical and go crazy, as reflect by the sound and atmosphere of this album. Other commentators have probably given you details on the meaning of the song, but you are not too way off, as it is about the facade of bullies trying to act tough, it was about a guy that beat Jonathan Davis up, I think after a concert.
    5. Divine
It almost makes me proud to hear you say that you are sometimes not sure if it is the same singer in the song, because he is my favorite vocalist and it only speaks for him. Even so many years later, so far every song has been awesome to me. Divine sounds so freaky with its dissonant main riff, but the greatest thing and what has legendary status among Korn fans is especially the bridge and how it is building up (such moments are usually also the best moments at Korn-concerts), something that they will do even more so in the next song.
    6. Faget
Lyric-wise perhaps the greatest effort on the entire album, and the greatest build up, real, pure, raw emotions, when somebody has been down and still gets attacked, when you keep pouring salt in the wounds until the moment you can’t take it anymore and lose it, like in the moment when Davis says „To a world that never appreciated shit, you can suck my dick and fucking like it“.
    7. Shoots and Ladders
Both, very restrained and aggressive, as you mentioned, this reflects the meaning of the song of how the nursery rhymes sound so nice and innocent, when they actually often have a very dark background (e.g. „london bridge is falling down“). A Korn Classic, I just wished the studio version was more fast-paced like the live versions.
    8. Predictable
Every song has been great so far in my opinion. This song I find "only" decent, but therefore again it has this main-riff that I would probably have high up on my „best korn riffs“-list. Also I like the soft way he sings in the beginning of the bridge, a real brief come down-moment after all the ass-kicking tracks Korn has delivered so far, before they go back into heavy-mode at the end of this track. Fun fact, kind of embarrassing because it's been my favorite band: Never paid attention to that beeping noise you mention, in over 20 years listening to it, thanks for that!
    9. Fake
The chorus I find weak. So far the worst on the list so far, but that sounds so negative, when actually I think this song still has cool moments, I like the verses and especially the bridge is so great.
    10. Lies
This song is so heavy, not as great as the first 7-8 songs, but still kicking serious ass. Barely any melodic singing, just raw, pure aggression.
    11. Helmet in the Bush
Along with Fake and lies, I find this song not as great as the previous once, and yet still decent. In the beginning I barely paid attention that song. Only after listening to it several times more carefully, I started appreciating it more.
    12. Daddy
In all those years I listened to this song only a few times fully. It is like a very visual horror movie that every horror fan must have watched but most people are not too enthusiastic about rewatching because it was so dark. This final track is so shocking, maybe the darkest song I ever listened to.... and after joining Korn in this rollercoaster-ride of emotions, listening to all the lyrics from being bullied, victimized, having had problems with drugs and other themes on this album, it is almost like in the end you get to learn about the root of the dark atmosphere on which this whole album is built on, all the problems and injustice happening to the singer, all the bad things that happen to him, which you learn about, only to learn how much darker it gets on the final track about his childhood. And after having suffered such trauma to still have to deal with people beating you up as Davis sings about in „Clown“, the bullying he had to deal with, a story told in „Faget“ and trying to escape this reality by taking drugs as in „Blind“, as if the childhood trauma had not been enough.
I could feel immediately Clown will be one of your highlights. It surprised me that you liked Helmet in the Bush. Much like on See you on the other side (with Open Up), one of your favorites is again one of my least favorites on the album! But the big difference: Even if Helmet is one of my least favorites on the debut album, it’s still so interesting and I like listening to it.
To me, the first 7 songs on this album are already 7 korn classics, as weird as it sounds, but that is why it quickly became one of my favorite albums ever. All in all, I would say, the second half I found notably weaker than the first, and still so well done and just such a brutal, shocking ending that you can hardly even listen to, and everything comes full circle, even the most insane seeming moment on that album makes so more sense after listening to the final track and knowing what it is about.

Wow, love this comment so much! Thanks for taking the time to write it. I completely agree on Daddy, I can count on one hand the times I've listened to it. Fantastic song but just so dark, it really is not one to play on loop, it's just too heavy for frequent playing.
