These red rashes, that were circular, would later develop into large, and very painful black boils on the skin. “Pockets Full of Posies” stems from the lack of knowledge at the time about how diseases spread. It was believed that disease was spread through bad smells, which means that people held bunches of flowers to their faces when going out in public, to protect themselves from bad smells. "Ashes, Ashes” it’s actually about the burning of the dead bodies from the victims of the plague. “We all fall down” is about the many people who died from the plague. The falling down is said to represent death, and everyone “falls down” or dies, because the majority of the European population was wiped out during the time of the plague.
The genre started with two bands: Korn and Deftones. Deftones will bring you the sensual side of Nu-Metal and they have a different heaviness compared to Korn. You'll like it. Great reaction.
Deftones is one of the band that has stayed with me through 24 years since I first found them. They have released on a regular basis and not released a single album I haven't liked and definitely have a distinct sound. Well worth checking out.
Deftones also had more of a progressive rock influence as well. Similar to Mudvayne though they were way heavier than Deftones and rather than 60% Nu Metal, 20% Hard Rocker, and 20% Progressive Rock - like the Deftones were, Mudvayne was more 60% Progressive Metal, 30% Alternative Metal, 10% Nu Metal. Those two and Korn were really the three cornerstones of that scene in the late 90's to mid 2000's.

Clown is the song that helped me in high school as a skinny short teen and a bit of an outcast. They helped me show that I wasn't alone and even helped me find new friends who had similar taste in music and were more like me.
This whole album opened my mind to kids that didn't have the positive upbringing I was privileged to experience. I live my life thinking about this ever since first REALLY listened to this album.
I was finally able to see Korn live in concert just last year. Never was able to back in the day. Jonathon Davis came out playing the bagpipes very last song and sang this. They are crazy. Blind was the first song on their debut album, and it *really* set the tone for them. Can't be a better song to introduce yourself to the world with. Can confirm. I was 15 or 16 when this hit the air and that switch to Mary Had a Little Lamb blew our minds! There's a lot of vocals on that album where Jon is just being some kinda wild crazy man (a little like Mike Patton). So much amazing alternative stuff came out in '94, but these guys had something really unique. IIRC the guitarists, Munky and Head, did some unusual tuning on 7-string guitars which had them really stand out from everything else.

The guitar tone Korn puts out with just a single note just blows me away. There's absolutely nothing/nobody like it. "Need to" with that haunting initial note is still one of my favourite Korn songs, and guitar riffs of all time - and the song never gets any love.
Korn holds a special place in my heart. This album was the first metal album I bought when I was a kid, and I played the crap out of it. The bassist in the band stirred up my interest in learning to play the bass. Also, Babymetal opened for them on tour in 2017.
Aileen, I am really really glad that with Korn you have started your reactions with their first album. In my humble opinion, it is absolutely the best. It is raw, less processed, less commercialized....it is a masterpiece to this day. Stay with it, there are absolute BANGERS on this album....front to back. But......you also need to check out the DEFTONES. Around the Fur =Best album, But they're all good, every album.
This is one of the greatest and darkest debut metal albums of all time. It's my personal favorite, when I bought it in 1994 it blew my mind and it still does til this day. So many relatable songs and lyrics that just tear at the heart strings. Jon's vocals are phenomenal, haunting and legendary. They have influenced so many bands that it's not even funny. I'm here to recommend two of Korn's biggest influences again, as per the Wikipedia article on Korn: Mr. Bungle and Faith No More. Both have the same singer - Mike Patton - though Faith No More had a different singer for their 1985 and 1987 albums. For Mr. Bungle, their self-titled album (1991) is the most relevant for influence, though fair warning: it is weird. Check out 'Carousel', 'Egg' (stop at ~7min 30s if you want, the rest is a recording of them talking on a train...) and 'Quote Unquote' - formerly known as 'Travolta'. With Faith No More, it depends: The Real Thing (1989) is the album that got popular, with 'Epic' getting loads of play to the point that some people call the band a one hit wonder; 'Falling To Pieces' and 'Surprise! You're Dead' are also fantastic. I'd argue Angel Dust (1992), their subsequent release, is more influential and just all around a better album. My favorite tracks from that one are probably 'A Small Victory', 'Midlife Crisis', and... I'm gonna censor the title: 'J***lobber', but it's really hard to single out tracks since the entire thing is absolutely killer. Finally, if you want more Mr. Bungle, California (1999) is consistently incredible; start with 'Retrovertigo', then maybe 'Goodbye Sober Day' and 'The Air-conditioned Nightmare', then... the rest of the album.
This song is new to me and I didn't know he 's a piper, but very impressed. Bearing in mind many nursery rhymes, fairy tales, and children's stories are really dark . And so was his childhood so I get it. Knick knack Paddy Whack is very disturbing given what he went through. (I'd say think about it but really you can't unthink it so don't) The power of Korn I'd that they convey so much raw emotion, so much of it ugly. I'm from small town western Kansas. I remember when I was 16 in 1999. Two buddies of mine and I were cruising around town in the summer time, blaring rock and metal music from the car with the windows down. We were sitting at a stop light when this song came on. The poor person next to us wasn't ready. Little ole lady from a much more conservative time. First, there was confusion as she heard bagpipes coming from the car next to her. Then, even more confusion to see these bagpipes were being enjoyed by 3 teenage boys dressed all in black, baseball caps sporting different band logos, and deeply black wrap around sunglasses like the little edge lords we thought we were. That confusion turned into abject terror when the guitars and drums kicked in, and we started nodding our in head unison to the beat all while looking right at her. I've never watched a little old lady drive so fast in my life when the light turned green. We were just jamming and meant no harm.
Back in high school, my girlfriend at the time was complaining we didn't have a 'song'. We were driving and I told her the next song to come on will be 'our song'. This was it. Think of her every time I hear it. I still miss her.
Scotland loves Korn, and JD loves us and the pipes and kilt. I was in the crowd of a Glasgow gig on his birthday. The band brought out a cake, and the crowd sang happy birthday, it was awesome. "The pocketful of posies" relates to the flowers stuffed into the pockets of the dead st the time of the plague. 1-2 buckle my shoe is a poem about death sweeping through a small village. London Bridge actually did fall down and many people were killed. This was the first band to call attention to how violent those stories were, let we taught them to our children. I was in 5th grade when this album came out. I had an older sister so I got into it right away. I was a fan right away. I had a traumatic thing happen to me right at that time and it was cathartic.

Without me getting too deep into it, the song was intended to paint a dark picture. I wouldn't go deep and say it forms you from childhood although it may very well do so. I think the intent was that most of these nursery rhymes ARE dark and their origins are usually not as sweet and simple as when they're introduced to us. I saw KoRn (and Deftones) open for Ozzy just before their first album official release. I think Blind was the first song they played and Shoots and Ladders was mid-set. They shut the lights off and there was silence and we thought the set was already over. Then you just hear the bagpipes, and finally a spotlight hits Jonathan walking in front of the stage by security. And in the crowd, everyone is like “wtf is this?!” and when the drums hit and the song fully starts we were all mesmerized and head bobbing to the beat. And even though we haven’t heard the song before we could all sing along.
apparently the 'london bridge' song refers to when the bridge was built they thought they needed child sacrifices to keep the bridge from falling down. they even found child bones inside the base of the bridge somewhat recently.
This is by far KoRn's greatest album ever and a top 10 in my personal list of albums. I bought it in 1994 and was lucky to get Jonathan, Munky, Head, and Fieldy to autograph the album cover in person in '95 at a signing a day before the first time I saw them live.

Hearing this song again made me remember another time I did: I was at some kind of house party many years ago. At the time my hair was long and in braids. Every so often I would have to get it taken out of braids and redone. So at that party a girl I knew was doing so. And while she was re-braiding my hair this song came on. I started grooving to it, but she said, “No, that song is scary!”
Fieldys bass after the bag pipes always gets me....only time I ever saw Korn live was Woodstock 99 and Davis has said in interviews that Woodstock was their best performance EVER. It was unlike anything I have ever seen and witnessed. The pit was an absolute experience....you didn't move yourself, the crowd moved you. Everyone jumping in unison was INSANE....I would totally watch you react to the whole hour performance that is how good that show was
This was my first Korn song I ever heard, it changed my perspective on what a "nu" sound of heavy music could be. This album influenced rock and metal music for a good 10 years. I saw them last September at Louder Than Life festival and Jonathan sounded ( and looked) better than he has in a long time. I guess he is sober. I uploaded a "highlights" video of the festival performances, check it out and you can see what I mean.
I grew up listening to Korn because i was a metalhead since i was a teen. I wore all the Adidas stuff, i had oldschool Adidas shoes and put spikes all over them, i had dreadlocks too. LOL I found my favorite band by reading the Korn website forums back in 2002. Someone recommended In Flames and i was blown away with them.
Their Self Title was the very best one. So much raw undeveloped but talented sound. I love this whole album and hope you do a rection for every song. That way we could see your reaction in chronological order of each song

As a proud SCOTSMAN, I really appreciate the bagpipes. Also love that Jonathan loves his Scottish ancestory and wears a kilt, even not a usual kilt, doesnt matter, its different and cool. I wish when I was 18 I appreciated the music more, as I was young when they were massive like Woodstock 99, shame I didn't travel over from Scotland for this. Love your channel keeping this music alive.

This is the important part of the song.
The guitar tone Korn puts out with just a single note just blows me away. There's absolutely nothing/nobody like it. "Need to" with that haunting initial note is still one of my favourite Korn songs, and guitar riffs of all time - and the song never gets any love.
Korn holds a special place in my heart. This album was the first metal album I bought when I was a kid, and I played the crap out of it. The bassist in the band stirred up my interest in learning to play the bass. Also, Babymetal opened for them on tour in 2017.
Aileen, I am really really glad that with Korn you have started your reactions with their first album.
In my humble opinion, it is absolutely the best.
It is raw, less processed, less commercialized....it is a masterpiece to this day.

This is one of the greatest and darkest debut metal albums of all time. It's my personal favorite, when I bought it in 1994 it blew my mind and it still does til this day. So many relatable songs and lyrics that just tear at the heart strings. Jon's vocals are phenomenal, haunting and legendary. They have influenced so many bands that it's not even funny. Love all your reactions Aileen, keep up the great work. 🤘😎
I'm here to recommend two of Korn's biggest influences again, as per the Wikipedia article on Korn: Mr. Bungle and Faith No More. Both have the same singer - Mike Patton - though Faith No More had a different singer for their 1985 and 1987 albums. For Mr. Bungle, their self-titled album (1991) is the most relevant for influence, though fair warning: it is weird. Check out 'Carousel', 'Egg' (stop at ~7min 30s if you want, the rest is a recording of them talking on a train...) and 'Quote Unquote' - formerly known as 'Travolta'.
With Faith No More, it depends: The Real Thing (1989) is the album that got popular, with 'Epic' getting loads of play to the point that some people call the band a one hit wonder; 'Falling To Pieces' and 'Surprise! You're Dead' are also fantastic. I'd argue Angel Dust (1992), their subsequent release, is more influential and just all around a better album. My favorite tracks from that one are probably 'A Small Victory', 'Midlife Crisis', and... I'm gonna censor the title: 'J***lobber', but it's really hard to single out tracks since the entire thing is absolutely killer. Finally, if you want more Mr. Bungle, California (1999) is consistently incredible; start with 'Retrovertigo', then maybe 'Goodbye Sober Day' and 'The Air-conditioned Nightmare', then... the rest of the album.

This song is new to me and I didn't know he 's a piper, but very impressed. Bearing in mind many nursery rhymes, fairy tales, and children's stories are really dark . And so was his childhood so I get it. Knick knack Paddy Whack is very disturbing given what he went through. (I'd say think about it but really you can't unthink it so don't) The power of Korn I'd that they convey so much raw emotion, so much of it ugly. Because nothing changes unless we come to grips with it. Great reaction!
I'm from small town western Kansas. I remember when I was 16 in 1999. Two buddies of mine and I were cruising around town in the summer time, blaring rock and metal music from the car with the windows down. We were sitting at a stop light when this song came on. The poor person next to us wasn't ready. Little ole lady from a much more conservative time. First, there was confusion as she heard bagpipes coming from the car next to her. Then, even more confusion to see these bagpipes were being enjoyed by 3 teenage boys dressed all in black, baseball caps sporting different band logos, and deeply black wrap around sunglasses like the little edge lords we thought we were. That confusion turned into abject terror when the guitars and drums kicked in, and we started nodding our in head unison to the beat all while looking right at her. I've never watched a little old lady drive so fast in my life when the light turned green. We were just jamming and meant no harm.
Some great Jonathan Davis bagpipes here too.
My favorite Korn songs are Clown, Souvenir, and Faget. I love all their songs, but I think those are definitely my favorites.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head with nursery rhymes having darker meanings. That's what they were going for with the song.
Back in high school, my girlfriend at the time was complaining we didn't have a 'song'. We were driving and I told her the next song to come on will be 'our song'. This was it. Think of her every time I hear it. I still miss her.

Scotland loves Korn, and JD loves us and the pipes and kilt. I was in the crowd of a Glasgow gig on his birthday. The band brought out a cake, and the crowd sang happy birthday, it was awesome. I wish there was a recording of it.

I was in 5th grade when this album came out. I had an older sister so I got into it right away. I was a fan right away. I had a traumatic thing happen to me right at that time and it was cathartic.

Without me getting too deep into it, the song was intended to paint a dark picture. I wouldn't go deep and say it forms you from childhood although it may very well do so. I think the intent was that most of these nursery rhymes ARE dark and their origins are usually not as sweet and simple as when they're introduced to us.

I saw KoRn (and Deftones) open for Ozzy just before their first album official release.
I think Blind was the first song they played and Shoots and Ladders was mid-set. They shut the lights off and there was silence and we thought the set was already over. Then you just hear the bagpipes, and finally a spotlight hits Jonathan walking in front of the stage by security. And in the crowd, everyone is like “wtf is this?!” and when the drums hit and the song fully starts we were all mesmerized and head bobbing to the beat. And even though we haven’t heard the song before we could all sing along.
apparently the 'london bridge' song refers to when the bridge was built they thought they needed child sacrifices to keep the bridge from falling down. they even found child bones inside the base of the bridge somewhat recently.

This is by far KoRn's greatest album ever and a top 10 in my personal list of albums. I bought it in 1994 and was lucky to get Jonathan, Munky, Head, and Fieldy to autograph the album cover in person in '95 at a signing a day before the first time I saw them live.

Hi Aileen. I noticed you've been listening to bands with dark themes . One if the first bands to bring a sense of darkness, drama is the Doors. Try "The end" from the doors. Very hypnotic and dynamic. There will never be another front man like Jim Morrison.

Hearing this song again made me remember another time I did: I was at some kind of house party many years ago. At the time my hair was long and in braids. Every so often I would have to get it taken out of braids and redone. So at that party a girl I knew was doing so. And while she was re-braiding my hair this song came on. I started grooving to it, but she said, “No, that song is scary!”

Fieldys bass after the bag pipes always gets me....only time I ever saw Korn live was Woodstock 99 and Davis has said in interviews that Woodstock was their best performance EVER. It was unlike anything I have ever seen and witnessed. The pit was an absolute experience....you didn't move yourself, the crowd moved you. Everyone jumping in unison was INSANE....I would totally watch you react to the whole hour performance that is how good that show was

This was my first Korn song I ever heard, it changed my perspective on what a "nu" sound of heavy music could be. This album influenced rock and metal music for a good 10 years. I saw them last September at Louder Than Life festival and Jonathan sounded ( and looked) better than he has in a long time. I guess he is sober. I uploaded a "highlights" video of the festival performances, check it out and you can see what I mean.
I grew up listening to Korn because i was a metalhead since i was a teen. I wore all the Adidas stuff, i had oldschool Adidas shoes and put spikes all over them, i had dreadlocks too. LOL I found my favorite band by reading the Korn website forums back in 2002. Someone recommended In Flames and i was blown away with them.
