Hat tip to Wayne Wolfe for introducing me to the ticking stick method of transcribing measurements.
Humble Road Hello I am a solo female baby boomer 2015 road track etrek 22 foot owner.. I am living and traveling in it full-time and just not enough storage.. I am considering the pleasure way Plateau XLMB I hate the idea of giving up having a van versus Rv but I love that Murphy bed and I really need the space. What do you think? I is only 22ft but width seems to be sufficient to allow more space for much need storage. Also hate the i idea of giving up having a real van versus a Rv on a sprinter chassis.
Do you think I should look at the other Pleasure Ways that are just longer that have more storage? What do you suggest? I have a mountain bike I need to deal w/as well. . Also are you selling this because I’d be interested in buying it.

Many questions to ask and answers to sort.
* Learned something new: ticking stick
* Incredible videography
* Superb verbal skills w/educating, explanation, comparison
You making your own parts is super smart and you save money and time too. Genius!!
I'm building this van with my own blood, sweat and tears. I have carefully tightened every single bolt!
40 years ago I used the ticking stick method for installing complex shaped kitchen counter tops. Now there are a number of 2D/3D digital-laser devices that aid in making these templates, but none of them are as inexpensive as a stick, pencil, and piece of scrap plywood.
Admire your creativity and talent, thanks George!
We learn something new every time we watch.
I’m sorry if that hurt, but it’s nice to see I have company in the “I didn’t pay attention, so I got hurt”, category. I am so jealous of all the cool tools you have-and how you use them. 😎. Lisa
Wow! The brackets sliced like butter-fascinating to watch.
I will never look at jewelry necklace ads the same again-that was interesting & fun (seeing you throw it to the side).
You are very talented-God smiled on you.
Excellent presentation. Helpful hints for me. Thanks also for mentioning Ian Dury.
Enjoy following your build and attention to detail
I get all giddy when I see ya have a video up!!! I know I’m gonna be entertained. Your work is amazing. When you sell me your old can I will rewatch the build for it!! Carry on my friend.
:-)
Those L brackets are beautiful! Btw, I'm a woman. You put so much thought in what you do. I love the coffee can idea you had. I'm definitely gonna try it. I do wood working and I know that would come in handy when I have to trace patterns on the wood. TFS
Thank you Cathy!
Get it done!
Oh ...I am so intrigued ....you are beyond anythingI have seen before ...and I watch these how to videos a lot . 😊
Thank you Gwen
Once upon a time, before computers, when us old time graphic designers/AD’s needed to use ruling pens, rapidograph pens, Korinoor made a flexible curve. Just like your snake... still got mine somewhere with my old drafting materials. Love the tick stick! Thanks for sharing.
Ahh! I do miss those days. I will never forget the first demonstration of a MAC computer. The cut and paste made me realize our industry would never be the same, but in a good way. The price was the death of a true art form; typesetters. That's why I was so excited to learn of this ticking stick! It reminded me of the old days.
LOVE how your photography expertise and experience are showcased near the end of the video with the shots of the metal joints. Who knew 80/20 aluminum could look so good?
Thanks John!
🎬 1 📹 🎞 🗣 🎙⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Outstanding thank you for sharing❗️💃🏽🕺🏽🚐 RV loving it...
Fantastic
Wow George, you have skills on skills and tools on tools...
Ok 2:32 in and I already know I won’t be using this scribe method. Wheew! Enjoying your process very much though Sir Humble. Keeping my eye on you all the way through ;)
You are amazing!
Aw shucks!
You should get an “intern” to do those things like cut and drill the elbows lol. They learn to do stuff and you save time 😊
Dude ! You just saved me a lot of money for my van bed frame ! ( L brackets) Genius !
Glad I could help!
nice george
Wow I never thought I’d think of pictures of aluminum framing with screws attached as beautiful works of art! Such great photography, but of course since that was your profession I shouldn’t be surprised. Great ingenuity on fabrication for the build. I continue to be impressed and captivated by your build videos. Can’t wait for more.
Thank you Maitilda. I love building things and I love making images. But then, I love a lotta things!
#635! Thanks for sharing.
Flexible curve...used in architectural drawing as well.
Beauty and potential! I agree. Loved the out take at the very end too!
thats so smart. thanks for sharing. i learned something that I'll never forget.
Those last still shots were beautiful van jewelry!
The ticking stick is simple and brilliant at the same time, thanks for sharing Humble!
Great Plans....can't wait until the van is completed.
Too bad there's not a love thumbs up....I love your videos.....unfortunately my little pea brain doesn't understand everything, and then my brain goes "Who's Freddy Taylor?" You are such a thinker!! I need to show my son this for the ticking stick! Who knows, maybe he'll think his mom needs a van camper (vamper--my grandkids definition.. little too close to vampire tho). My son's a carpenter and I've never heard him mention a ticking stick. Can't wait for the next installment! Thanks George!

Oh noo! Lol at the end 🤣 happens to the best of us! Thanks for sharing.
wow! obviously the tedium from your old job has come in handy in this build... lol. You have great patience my man. But damn, anyone who ever buys your used vans sure will know they are getting quality.
Maryann oh I recognize the symptoms. Was married to a mechanical engineer for 20 yrs. Respect their work...dont wanna live with one..lol
allentown Gal Many good dedicated men have this symptom
Love it!
bravo
You are so darn clever and resourceful!
Shucks!
Great stuff! Thank you!
thanks for the learning!
Early in my career I worked in the sign industry and use to do a lot of drafting and pattern making, I had the “snake” with the soft lead core but I preferred the one they made with interlocking Lexan strips (probably eBay).. much better for longer gentle curves like you are doing. (Loved your jewelry trick with the bendie one by the way!).. Most of the time on a pattern like yours I would look ahead 12” or so and just draw to the dot at that point.. kind of amazing how accurate and smooth you could get after you get the hang of it. Butcher paper was the other go to, ruff cut the paper oversized, tape the straight edge of the paper to the straight of the shelf..then push the paper into the seems. Put tick marks on the paper and play connect the dots refining the curve on the table.. just another idea to add to your arsenal...
Cool stuff! My skills with things like this are so bad, so I always enjoy seeing a master at work!
Good job!!!
Your photos are awsome!!
Kudos!!!
Binge watching your channel!! Love your commitment to detail, sharing your design expertise and your wonderful wit. Hope to see you on the road!
Thank you SaSu!
That’s the character of a professional and entrepreneur
GEORGE...The ‘Ticking stick” looks typical engineering complicated to me. Why not just use your “snake”...put 2 together and set the bend you need...simple!!...ya?
Making your own L Brackets will ultimately be a saving of time and ,money, for sure... I am starting to see the SYSTEMS you are putting into place...
for the build out... I am patiently but impatiently waiting ... 😎 P.S. U are AMAZING and so-oooooo FUN!!!
DrShonto Yep and then one should sell these templates on EBay maaaannny other van builders would line up for these already scribed and ‘’TIcked” templates. :)
you are a clever man
Love your videos!
Thanks Mike!
Would've liked to see your finished template.
Loved your jewelry story. You're right. Look at ad and pitch. Now thanks to you I'll have to study it more! However, I'm sure these days it all computer generated.
Your using a tick stick really yup a cool thing. I use it in fixing old furniture lift should look like the right so the best part is , I would likely as not be covering it with fabric hahaha Fun to see you work. Hubby used the snake repairing gun stocks to get the perfect size and shape. Having ingenuity what a gift. thanks for video and sharing. Watching for the next installment .... Bye
If you hold the angle aluminum like a Christmas tree pointing up it won't damage as much
And it's more stable when you cut
Love it! Would a large profile contour gauge (with metal or plastic pins) be helpful as you tackle these shapes to make your cardboard templates?
I will definitely appreciate the jewellery catalogue a lot more before I file them in the bin!
Tick Stick - Brilliant! Nothing like having the correct tools for the job, eh!?!
You got that right! Ya learn something new every day!
Wow that's a LOT of work! Looks like you're enjoying it though :)
Oh yeah! If I'm working in a van or outside, I'm a happy camper! :-)
You are so smart. Ha ya but you forgot to duck!
Yes! Freddie Taylor. Find the “One best way.”
I was a carpenter many years ago, and I never heard of that technic before. My cousin is just finishing up on his 52' sailboat that he has been building from scratch for the past 28 years. I'll have to see if I can learn him on this!! ;-)
Present him with his own ticking stick! Now that he's finished!
Technique*you mean
The devil is in the details, and you're full of the devil. Thanks for another great vid!
Very impressive. Now I'll need to know the exact weight of each bracket as well as the nuts and bolts please. I'm keeping a tally. :)
Oh you are a buster!
:-D
Hi Humble! Love your outakes more than most yt channels! Bravo..machining your own parts is the height of van geekdom. Im not sure if I mentioned this cannel before..but you are brethren to Mads at Sail Life in Denmark who is a sailboat renovation genius IMO. Brothers from a different mother? LOL!
Oh I will have to check them out thank you!
Where the heck was this video last week when I was making my upper cabin shelf? A ticking stick would’ve been so much easier. :)
If you cut angle with the pointed side up like a triangle sitting on its base it’s less likely to kick out like that. Like this ^. It’s also easier on the blade since the metal is always being cut at an angle.
I thought of that, but I had two issues. First, it wasn't as friendly to being clamped down and secondly, essentially you have two kerfs instead of one, I thought that could be problematic, given the violence of the first kick out. So far, all is working out pretty well and I should have hundreds of pieces ready by the time I get my 80/20 material...
The 80/20 point about the brackets is hilarious. I bet they are funding pensions with those bracket prices.
Your videos reflect your genius, until the out take at the end😂 I can’t wait for the next one.
:-D
😁😁😁😁😁
Your “snake” is a French curve, a.k.a. Flexible curve ruler.
French curves are generally fixed bits of plastic. The snake is generally a "spline" or "flexible curve". This according to Wikipedia and my distant knowledge from "technical drawing" class in school.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_curve
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_spline
Don't know who this guy is... But I like the cut of his jib
The only thing - for max accuracy the long edge of the angle and the “tick” need to be on the same edge of the stick. IOW flip your tick stick over and mark the other side
Your awesome. Will you do my van?
George....great step by step process with aluminum brackets....will you make available a parts list for the products your using? Thanks Mike
Thanks Mike. Yes, at the end of the build I will have a complete series along with all the specs, parts and prices.
Humble Road I will wait for this video
What kind of blade is on your chop saw for cutting the 80/20?
I don't know man, I'm in connecticut and we got a serious tick problem over here, too many dear. I don't think I could use that method. Lol
When I learned drafting, a LONG time ago, your "snake" was called a flexible french curve.
interesting...Will you please keep track of the costs and time spent on building your rig. That would be most helpful
"The Snake" is called a Flexible Curve - I used one in my days of Art Direction
That's where I saw mine for the first time, in an Art Director's office. That was my life, working with Art Directors and Creative Directors. Sometimes I miss it. Only sometimes...
If only all "test unions" were things of beauty and potential...
Hoped to see the headline template ( made using ticking stick ) - Did it fit ?
It did not fit as tight as I would have liked, but I sensed that throughout the exercise. I will redo it and reshoot, explaining what I do differently to improve on it. Don't worry, I kept the original, as embarrassing as it is! :-)
Where is the LOVE button??? lol
I just clicked it. ❤️
Zamp Solar
Clever guy!!! How much did you save making your own L brackets? And how much were nuts and bolts?
Saved over $2,000.
so far...
No French Curve? I use Bee's wax for cutting tools in aluminum, oil for steel.
Bee's wax, huh? I'll give it a try. What's the advantage?
I learned that working in a machine shop. The advantage? It works better than oil. lol
Since you are my staunchest critic, I'm gong to hold your feet to the fire on this one, James. I just spent one hour reading forums and articles on lubricants for cutting, drilling and milling aluminum. Not once was any type of wax mentioned. In fact, the overwhelming suggestion across all was ATF, WD-40 or a mixture of both. That machine shop you worked in… are they still in business? ;-)
Humble Road ATF all the way George. Affordable and effective.
The WD in WD-40 stands for "water displacement". It's a solvent, not a lubricant.
Hey James, where have you been? I'm curious to get your take on my latest videos.
This is basic common sense shop work.. In south we call it using your head for something instead of a hat rack. Good job
Thanks Harold. Appreciate that from those who know.
It’s called a flexible curve!
Ahhh yes! Thank you Suzanne!
Or Story Stick
I have always known it as a French Ruler.
a) Wonderful choice Brandenburgische Konzerte n 4;
b) I remember seeing Bob Wells using a scribing tool more or less one yer ago amzn.to/2qbOc3B
c) You must be having the time of your life (and I hope it's the right idiom)
Marco! I'm impressed you knew the background music I chose. Yes, I am having the time of my life!
Scribing seems 100x easier.
Little question, does your spouse check on you once in a while to make sure you are not injured?☺
Ha! She pokes her head out the back door of the house to say, "I'm going to bed, how much longer are you going to stay in there?"
I think 4 George's safety, his wife needs 2 place a baby monitor on him. It will also allow her more minutes in bed when she no longer needs 2 poke her head out the door. :)
Ha! :-D
It’s called a “Flexible Curve”
Rustic Nature Reimagined They're French Curves, used them and fixed ones for decades.
how jon stewart is spending his retirement.
Your ticking stick needs a square cut on its pointed end. The one in your video was not cut square and when you transferred the measurements the new full size templet was smaller than the space you recorded.
I was a little off on this comment a year ago. It was the top edge of the tick stick hitting the header. It made the pattern off by the thickness of the stick.
Why not just use the snake on the contoured surface? Instead of using the ticking method.
whoa! way too much work
Good thing you weren't working on the Mayflower...
Ticking stick...... also known as a yardstick.
