      @TigerXGame 4 месяца назад +70

      @@silenthunder52 Problem is twofold for CS2 I think. On one side the complaints were valid, about it being a buggy mess with poor performance. CO dropped the ball there bigtime, possibly because they just got too ambitious. On the other hand there are a lot of players who make a direct comparison between 9 years of CS 1, and a freshly released CS2, and that's just an unfair comparison. As this video shows, CS2 is miles and miles beyond what CS1 was on release.

      Yup, I only played a very lightly modded CS1 (casual player here) and even at launch I was shocked how much had been improved over CS1. CS2 very much felt pushed out too early, but we cannot say the devs didn't learn and listen to the fanbase and what was improved or used a lot in mods.
      I always saw the devs role to make a game with a solid foundation they and modders could work on, and honestly from what we have seen with CS2 there is a huge amount of flexability to what can be done with the game. It will take time but I really think it will turn into the best sim city style game, passing even CS1 with all DLC.

But they were the first custom assets and they came when the player base was at its peak, so many still have the top subscription numbers. And now you see why: People were *desperate* for custom interchanges back when tools were practically nonexistent *outside the asset editor* to build them.

    The thing i remember from the first two years of Cities Skylines was that there was a bug that meant outside connection trains wouldn't despawn, which means that train exporting/importing was entirely broken. I remember how big of a deal tunnels were. Same with the ability to reverse roads with the upgrading tool.
    Yeah, uh, early Cities Skylines players tolerated a lot of shit because there really wasn't much better.
    Also, the Cities Skylines RUclips community changed oh so much in that time; a lot of the faces that came over from SC2013 eventually just kinda disappeared. I think either ConflictNerd or Biffa are like the earliest CS ones still remaining and regularly uploading Cities Skylines content.
    A bit rambly, but i think it's kinda interesting just to think about where Cities Skylines was in 2014-2015 compared to now, as a community.
    Edit 1 from watching this; Yeah iirc they did edit the terrain textures a few years into the game's life. I want to say it was around Parklife but I'm not sure. Also, topographic views I believe was post After Dark, in the free update that added Quays to the game. Cities Skylines free patches were kinda wild like that. I recall using the wind speed map as a rough idea of what the terrain was like inland before that patch came around.
    Edit 2 for the assets.
    Welcome back white collar residential assets Cities in Motion 2. Honestly they were just as placeless there. Also there's a lot of assets that are just cuts and merges of the same assets, especially in the residential side. Also, no corner lots yet iirc, not that that didn't really come into play unless you were doing offices or high density commercial.

    The original launch of CS1 benefited GREATLY from how upset people were with the last SimCity to come out under EA at the time, that game was a huge flop, CS1 had what people were more or less looking for instead, and it took off from there. In hindsight, the enthusiasm and community around CS1 took several years to build at least, finally peaking when the game was all but complete, with just one or two DLCs to go, and after the mod community had a chance to make additions that basically became non-optional, like TMPE.

    Here's the thing, all of these things coming from patches and DLC are fine for the first game in the series.
    Why I was okay with it then and am not okay with it now is quite simple. I don't see why in a sequel to a game, I have to again wait for patches and DLC content to give me BACK functionality I had in the previous title.
    Imagine if Nintendo had released Mario Brothers and then in Mario Brothers 3 made 2 player mode a patch that had to be added back into the game?
    Imagine if Halo had added in dual wielding weapons in Halo 2 only to make it a DLC in Halo 3?
    Imagine if you could change your custom in the first Spiderman title but in the sequel that needed to be added back into the game in a patch?!
    It's not a fair comparison to compare CS1 at launch to CS2 at launch. At all. Paradox themselves decided to make it a sequel, a DIRECT SEQUEL. They themselves chose to make this comparison. don't cry that we did and what we see isn't positive, even today. (though I concede the recent patches are the right direction, they still have a long ways to go)
    A fairer comparison would be to compare the launch state of CS2 to be BASE GAME ONLY of CS1 at the same time.
    Although I do have to concede, I could have SWORN fences were a day 1 feature in CS1. I am actually shocked!

    It came up in my recommended right after I read a comment under a video on a different channel that proclaimed even with economy 2.0 CS2 would never be as good as CS1.
    It left me very confused as I think with the recent big updates (Mod Support, Economy 2.0, and Detailers Patch) CS2 is already a better game than base Vanilla CS1. Certainly better than the at launch version you showed, but I'd even say it surpasses the current base game only CS1. I jumped into CS2 for the first time in months the past two days, and I'm very pleased with the progress.
    Once they clean up the last few major bugs (many of which have already been modded out, but of course we need official fixes), finish the planned economy tweaks with any necessary rebalancing, and launch custom asset support I think it will be in an awesome place for a base game.

Nope... really not. The gaming industry set different standards for nowadays, and customers have different expectations as well. And releasing a game so flawed that it needs a year to even be enjoyable should be an absolute no-go for any developer studio.

    As soon as I saw the title of this video I knew there was gonna be a bunch of comments "See, CS1 was rough at launch too!" As if that somehow excuses the awful launch of CS2. CS1 was done when the devs were just starting up and had no expectations. A rocky start is understandable. After a decade of financial and critical success, it is absurd to give CS2 that same leeway.

      Agreed, somehow people don't understand that version 1 is the first game in the franchise, dismissing their two previous games Cities in Motion of course, but nobody remembers those and the sequel had such a bad reputation that they had to start an entirely new franchise. When CS:2 launched I was naive enough to think that they had spent all their time building a complete game just to strip out components to be resold at a later time as DLC. They really have no excuse for why the sequel released as a demo of a beta build which didn't even have a map maker and still doesn't have an asset editor. Version 2 should have been the best parts of version 1 with room to improve new features and content that weren't possible with the original. Instead they decided to build a completely new game that emulates what version 1 was which makes it appear to be a poor imitation of their own game.
      My biggest criticism for the game is the expense of the DLC, some of which are required for mods to function properly. Version 2 will most likely cost even more for DLC and so far most of what they have announced is exactly the same DLC we got from version 1. it is rather sad that paying customers act like they are in an abusive relationship without realizing it and forgive their abuser when shown the slightest bit of mercy after taking a beating like the failed Beach Front Properties and then given a handful of assets after 8 months from release. Where is the asset editor and where are the free content creator packs that were promised ? Again, it feels disingenuous to be "gifted" things when what was promised would have been so much more. I have no hate for the devs because they are obviously trying to work with what they got, more than likely CS:2's problems are caused by poor leadership and a woefully inept CEO at the helm.

      Nope, as far as I know from interviews from the CEO of CO they have always had a team of around 30 employees and she intentionally keeps them as a "small team" to better keep them under her control. With the success of the first game they have no excuse for not expanding which would have helped build the game that they advertised for version 2. The CEO intentionally gimps her team which resulted in the gimped launch of CS:2. Her only contribution to version 1 was the ripoff twitter mascot that she rebranded as "Chirper". If you listen to her interviews she admits that she knows nothing about the gaming industry and treats it like a "job" and when she was given the position of CEO she came into it not having to do anything to set up the studio as she states that she was given a ton of money in the form of some kind of subsidy and there were already employees established with specific roles which she had nothing to do with.

    i think a lot of the difference in perception comes from the legacy that CS1 created and the fact that we expected this to be a bigger project that was better funded and staffed after the success of the first game. its one thing for an unproven ip to launch in a rough state as shown in the video, its another for a now well established brand with 415 dollars worth of DLC in one game to launch another broken game

    • @thephantomchannel5368
      @thephantomchannel5368 3 месяца назад +3

      Completely agree, I can half forgive the egregious amount of DLC based on version 1 being a work in progress. There is no excuse for version 2 releasing the way it did especially when they have more money and experience from the 8 years of keeping CS:1 relevant which can mostly be attributed to the work of the modders fixing the game for them. They should have hired a dev team that could actually deliver what was promised and on time but the CEO intentionally gimps her team so that she can control them easier which is something that she admits in more than one interview that she has given over the years since the launch of CS:1. When asked about if she has any concerns for the future she jokes that the biggest consideration she makes each morning is whether to drive her new Jaguar to work or to ride her pony. She has also has stated that her fantasy game to develop would be a horse grooming simulator for mobile devices. This is the person in charge of the Cities Skylines franchise which is probably the reason why version 2 had such an abysmal launch and why Paradox had to step in and take over for public relations even after they granted her a two year extension from when the sequel was originally supposed to launch in 2021.

    Thanks for the fun stroll down memory lane. It was interesting to me because I was aware of Skylines development, but would have never bought it if SimThing 2013 hadn't been a total dumpster fire. It says a lot that even as shown Skylines was immensely better than the game that owned the genre, and was then able to grow into the genre-defining game it now is to the point that the original is now not much more than a distant memory. A couple things I noticed during the play: 1) as soon as you mentioned there was no topo view and no landscaping tools, I immediately thought of that first city you built and thought that it was probably the best that could have been done at that time, I'm happy you also thought of it later on. 2) Non-reversible roads used to drive me batty. 3) That purple fill for the pollution drove me nuts and was the thing I disliked most about the game at launch. I can't remember if that's how it still is because its been so long since I've played unmodded, but I can't imagine what they were thinking with that one. 4) Interestingly, it seems like they actually had a similar design philosophy on the economy to CS2 in that they wanted to make sure you were successful so badly that they made it near impossible to fail.

    In CS2, just to replace your alley with a two way road with anarchy, then you move the buildings on the side that don't fit with move it. Don't need to destroy anything.

    Things you notice right away: Better lighting, better growing buildings (scaffolds), better ground textures (aside of cliffs), better looking trees, more FPS, dirt textures around buildings/roads/trees etc. Also I always used a mod to hide road names and district names. It's distracting to see them.

    "People" are critical of C:S2 because the devs have had that decade plus to learn that "these are the things we need to have."
    I'm more critical of the "Buy this DLC, your game is dead, then buy this new one and start over."

    I like how Phil is saying "Wow I can't do this" and "That isn't a thing?" a lot. You can tell he hasn't played 100% vanilla CS1 in years lol

    I remember buying and playing CS1 on release, and it felt so strange and ... wrong that it took me several years to come back and finally enjoy it.
