We got some similar childhood heroes ! Vieira, Henry, Bergkamp. But I would add of course the double Z, Zinedine Zidane ! Barthez, Thuram, Desailly to give a few. As you can probably guess, I am french, and I feel so lucky to have been able to grow up with such a national football team.
Bergkamp was one of the many foreign players I loved during my childhood. My favorite player of all time (beside Zidane) Klose, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Maldini, Pirlo, Cafu, Pauleta, Juninho... I have so much more

Well said - They don't make them like that anymore - Duncan Ferguson was my hero. He would barely get a game and would be suspended 6-month a year between the BS he's playing against and VAR and the refs who have forgotten what football is. But leadership-wise, Keane and Viera (in no particular order) were the best.
Legends and one-time fierce rivals but underneath there was always a respect for the other.
Of course, that respect often derives from the hard fought rivalry of testing each other's resolve.

Further clarification: Neville put in some disgusting challenges on Reyes in particular, red card challenges that could’ve genuinely ended his career. That’s why Patrick was so rightly upset. Gary’s a nice guy but I’ve never heard him apologize for that behavior. He should be made to apologize for it.
