Hawkman Actually, it's not true. This was recorded in 1976. I don't know how about drinking, but Freddie didn't didn't start smoking until 1980. Plus, he was, like, 30 at the time of the record, so even if he was a heavy drinker (which I'm pretty sure he was NOT), I'd take an enormous amount of abusing alcohol to damage the voice at that age, thus making it pretty impossible. He did, however, develop voice nodules, which gave him a hard time singing live, but that didn't start to show up until 1977/78.

Pure natural untrained gift from birth. Open throat technique by nature or nurture. Either way want to sing like Freddy? Learn open throat technique and practice 2-3 hours a day 5-6 days a week for 3 years minimum and you'll be as close as your genetics will allow.

Freddie's tracks, the Beatles tracks... the songs you know and love become something magical hearing the pure power of the voices without the instruments and backing vocals. I get goosebumps hearing the power and emotions of Freddie's voice. There will never be another one like him, ever.

I think there are a lots of talented singers out there, there just not as much in the spotlight as they used to be in Freddie's time.

***** You're right about that. Think about NSYNC for a second. When they disbanded, Justin Timberlake became a star and now has his own media empire. JC Chasez, a far, FAR better singer than Justin, had one album which flopped and now he doesn't even sing anymore. It's a damn shame when you hear what he can do (You Ruined Me, You Don't Have to Be Alone, Dear Goodbye, etc). Talent gets you nowhere anymore.

Today, no matter how incredible the vocalist is, they absolutely, in almost all cases, use a certain amount of autotune. It's available, and it's used. So unless a live performance, there will most definitely be a certain amount of autotune involved, thus a less than pure performance.
