      Right?
      I remember talking with friends on the project and saying "What they aught to do is focus on SQ42. If they can successfully release at least an episode, it proves the concept and will bring interest and support back to star citizen." Hey ST! I appreciate your solid and thoughtful analysis! Great overview, but I do remember something a little differently, and this could be simply my memory confusing some past events. As I remember, the original deal was Chris Roberts put Wing Commander on the back burner following the movie flop. He wanted to wait until technology had improved to permit his dream being a possibility. S42 was (as he continues to say) this generation's Wing Commander! Star Citizen was seen as the sequel (if you will) to S42. When I backed this in 2013 I understood it to be for he single-player game, and hopefully the SC MMO continuation.

    • @spartamerican6758

      Odd. I experienced the opposite. S42 has cost SC more than anything.

    • @Hawlsey
      @Hawlsey 9 месяцев назад

      I'm not sure how to take that. If S42 was the intent and SC depended on it, than cost is based on the original goal of creating S42. If SC was primary and S42 was "additional", the "cost" will depend on how many players S42 will bring in once actually released, and that won't be known for at least a year (?) I get your intent (I think)..S42 has appeared to be a distraction from SC, but I guess we'll have to wait and see to make a more informed determination ;-)@@spartamerican6758

      Tumultuous is an understatement for how this thing has been over the last decade. With hard work and enormous risk comes one of two things. Curious... Does "most expensive game in history" include the fact they had to develop their own game engine? In comparison, how would we determine the total cost of Starfield... when it was built upon foundations laid in all their previous games?

    • @Boss_Fight_Index_muki
      @Boss_Fight_Index_muki 9 месяцев назад +5

      It's a middleware engine, Lumberyard (based on Crytek); dev cost include anything corresponding to the game like creation of assets, modifications to engine from a prior game, infrastructure, etc from the start of development.

    • @theforgedone
      @theforgedone 9 месяцев назад +5

      @@Boss_Fight_Index_muki I get that, but it sounds like they've had to do an incredible amount of work on the engine to get it remotely able to handle Star Citizen. Compare this to starfield... built upon skyrim and fallout 4, etc. Starfield plays very similarly to those games. The development requirements would be significantly smaller to have the engine ready for starfield, in comparison to the crytek engine and star citizen.
      It's be nice to have a more comprehensive view of the situation. Right now it's almost like saying "this game expansion cost only X, why does this brand new game with a mostly new engine cost XXXX?"
      Similarly, Cyberpunk was one of the most expensive games... which was also built upon REDengine, used in previous games by that company, and was able to make use of all previous development.

    • @Boss_Fight_Index_muki
      @Boss_Fight_Index_muki 9 месяцев назад +5

      @@theforgedone Say game x cost $200mil overall; 7 years later, sequel y uses game x engine (but can handle sequel y, no modification needed), all costs are for assets, content, marketing.
      For your C2077 example, it's just like the above except a ton of money were also spent on overhauling 65%+ of REDEngine (not a minor change), in addition to assets, content (this is where CDPR ran out of time), and marketing.
      The engine overhaul cost varies wildly case by case for new games or sequels. For add-ons (DLC or expansions) overhauling is rarely needed.

    • @theforgedone
      @theforgedone 9 месяцев назад

      @@Boss_Fight_Index_muki Yeah, that seems a reasonable explanation. However, the cost comparisons for games does not take any of this into account. Even if RED engine was 35% the same, how much that 35% is worth? This kind of info is not taken into account in the comparison.
      I just think there's more nuance needed to really understand the cost between the different companies than the cost comparison showed.

    • @Boss_Fight_Index_muki
      @Boss_Fight_Index_muki 9 месяцев назад

      @@theforgedone It's not taken into account, only work for the new game is taken into account.
      a) gen 9 Camry uses same engine as gen 8, dev cost only for new chassis, interior, etc
      b) above example but with same engine [improved]: all same cost as above + cost of modifying engine
      c) example [a] but with new engine (nothing in common with gen 8): all same cost as [a] + dev cost of new engine
      All engineering basically follows this pattern. And yes, games are an engineered product.

    Super straighforward. No BS. Chris Roberts is a mad man but it takes a lunatic to even attempt something like this where no other organization would dare. There really is nothing else like it. Not even close.

    Half life was a rudimentary shooter with PHENOMIAL acting, setpieces and fun physics puzzles. Most people don't realize the AI in halflife is dumb as a brick, it's how the enemies APPEAR to respond and have been placed, set to spawn in cinematic ways that gives the appearance of intellegence.
    The addition of little puzzles and breaks in the gameplay of SC could be the bit of spice that makes it legendary on top of the acting and story.

    Within 24 months is my guess as well, but I think it's important for people to understand that it's not at all unlikely it could be double that - or maybe even never. The game has received a lot of funding, but running a studio with over 1000 people is expensive as all hell. If their funding dries up within the next few years, they are going to go bankrupt surprisingly fast.
    Which is probably why they're in the business of selling hopes and dreams, because they actually do need that funding, they need people to stay interested. There's no way to make these games without a recurring annual revenue.

This last Citcon proved allot of people right that SQ42 was pulling resources and money away from the PU. Now that it is "feature ready" the PU damn well better improve at a very fast pace now and there is no excuse now.

      The PU we have today was not meant to be, originally. So the original idea was more like SQ42 in a SP/Co-Op format on a huge galactic scale.
      Only after the accident of fully explorable planets happened, did CIG post a pole, and ask the community if we wanted an expanded game. 85%ish voted yes in 2014,15. Then the scope began to expand into the MMO PU we have today, known as Star Citizen.
      Read the kick starter page to see the original scope. Then it expanded fast (feature creep) as the interest and funding exploded beyond expectation.
      Be sure to watch the pitch video.
      You can say we are getting more than pitched, rather than cut backs for budget and time.
      I am getting way more than I originally paid for. I truly feel scammed.

    Tomato always gets this wrong: The bulk of development isn't just for Squadron 42. Squadron 42 was simply getting the priority. They found creating something inside a single player game first is easier to reiterate and improve than a live service product. That way when it gets ported to SC it feels more finished.
    To say "this is where most of the effort went" is completey wrong. Almost everything that you see in Squadron 42 will be in Star Citizen. The ships, the locations, the gameplay, the planets, armor, weapons, all of it. What you probably won't see are the characters, dialog and animations made for Squadron 42. Thats not "where most of the effort went".
    Chris Roberts said himself on 10 for the Chairman that he estimates 1/3rd of the development is only in Squadron 42, 1/3 is only Star Citizen, and the other third is both. So "most of the effort" could be SC since that's also 2/3rds of the content. The SQ42 map system tech isn't just for Squadron 42. It was simply made there first. This just a multiplayer content creator annoyed that his game isn't getting the priority he wants. I get it.
    Even if you never play Squadron 42 you will experience most of what Squadron 42 will offer. The entire Odin system (where SQ42 takes place) will be in Star Citizen, & fully explorable! On the flip side, you don't have to spend hundreds on spaceships to fly them because many of the military ships are playable in Squadron 42.
    Players will want to play Squadron 42, and want to continue playing once the game is over. Guess what? That was just one star system! There's additional content (Stanton, Pyro and possibly Nyx) that they can play! They can even explore the Odin system as well. SQ42 will act like a 30+ hour tutorial for most of what they'll be doing in the 'verse. SQ42 will only help SC.
