Hi Sam 👋 I just re-watched this great video and I love how you show and tell the technique so down to earth and straight forward! I miss you here on RUclips! I think you have a real positive voice, and I loved your videos especially your free pattern reviews, and free pattern tips. Since I can’t like it more than once here you go 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I’d seen this described in books but couldn’t get my head round it at all. After watching you twice and then stopping and starting I now have LOADS of binding! Thank you, as long as I can attach it to the neck and armholes I will have something wearable - I haven’t enough fabric as I have also done a full bust adjustment, it never occurred to me that would need so much more fabric, duh, dopey me!
Hi Sam - don’t know why it’s taken me so long to find your channel! Thanks for this, really great tutorial. I’ve seen a few of these tutorials, but this is the best yet. Thanks for sharing👏👍😻
Great tutorial Sam…I tried it out this morning and it was amazing the amount you get out of such a small square…thank you for sharing such a handy tip!, 🙂
Fantastic Sam! I trained originally as a needlework teacher 46 years ago, done other things since then but now in retirement have a new found love for dressmaking. Never seen bias binding done this way before and will certainly be using it! Thank you.
Ooh Kay I bet you could teach us a thing or 2, have you seen a big change in sewing techniques? I found the online sewing community a complete revelation when I returned to sewing 🤗
@@Frugalisama i already put some scrap fabric aside to tray. But first gona watch your video ones more and than i gonna tray with watching and do the steps on the fabric. 😊
Thanks Paula, great idea to use your fat quarters, they can be tricky to use if you're not into crafting & you'll have some ready to gor next time you need some 👍
Genius! I have the bias binder things in 3 sizes but not used it yet. I’m going to look at my woven scraps differently now, didn’t realise could make so much from such small pieces! 🥳
Really useful, thanks, Sam. The other method I'd seen and used was much more labour-intensive and also left me amazed at how much fabric it suggested I needed to commit. This is much more frugal! 😁
Hi there Sam. I tried it but my first mistake was that I drew the lines on the wrong side, did it over and it took me about 3/4 of an hour to get it right. But i did mine in a 2" strip so it was a little complicated but i got through. Thanks for sharing. I'll definitely have to do it a few more times to get it right. I do have a 2" bias maker. 👍👍👍👍👍
This is how I make mine having followed a tutorial in Lauren Guthrie’s how to sew book. She starts with a bigger square and I struggle to get my lines straight all the way across, so maybe I’ll try a smaller square and see if that is easier. Thanks for the video. 🌈🍓🧶
Thank you for sharing this tutorial. I'll have to watch it again to understand it but I also saw someone cut the square into a triangle and fold in the points overlapping each other then mark the width they want but it doesn't make continuous binding though. You'll have to join them. But I'm definitely going to try this out because sometimes I totally get confused joining them together. Much love.👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏❤❤❤❤❤
This is the way i make my bias binding and find it so easy. Its a great way to use up scraps as well. i save my empty thread spools and wrap it around them.
Very cool. A couple of my I have patterns you have to cut the bias tape from the fabric and it cuts through the middle of the fabric which seems unnecessary. So I started doing little strips. Your tutorial looks like it will save waste and time. Thank you
Thank you Sam. This is a revelation. Wish I’d seen this yesterday. I spent ages making bias binding by cutting single strips and joining them one by one. I’ll definitely be doing it your way next time. Cheers!
Wow mind blown ! No idea you could do that but will definitely be giving it a try as I got a bias tape maker for Christmas which has not been used yet !
Thanks for that, I’ll be using it from now on. Also thanks for your Vera top tutorial, I’ve just finished making my first one and will be making more it fits so well.🇦🇺
That is magic Sam. Will definitely try that the next time! I actually thought you could only use cotton fabric to make bias binding but I take it that's viscose u are using. 💕
Thanks for sharing this Sam, another trick I'll be trying out! I need some bias binding to hem my new Poppy Pinafore that I've been making so I'll be giving this a go. My bias tape maker makes it by using 1.5" strips, I guess I'll just need to make a bigger square to start from? Xx
This is really useful Sam I will definitely try this method. Many patterns call for extra 1/2m of fabric to allow for bias binding to be cut so I opt to buy ready made for a cheaper option but this is better still thank you 🙏
Hope it worked out for you, yes I'm fine thank you, just been a bit busy with other things, just about to upload a video today - should be a bit more regular now hopefully 🤗
Love this tutorial, thank you Sam! I've seen this technique in Threads magazine but could never be bother to read as it just seemed too complicated... Your explanation makes it super easy to understand, I'll be doing my next lot of bias binding using this method!! 🥰🤩😍
I prefer this method of making bias binding because when I cut strips and then sew them together I always end up with the join seam allowance on both sides because I've sewn them together wrong, lol. I don't bother binding my quilts with bias strips, on grain or cross grain strips work just as well in my opinion.
I've used this technique and it's wonderful isn't it? I would add that you have to be careful to make your bias tape in a lighter weight fabric than the project you're using it for. I came a cropper making bias tape in quilting cotton to bind a neckline of a cotton lawn top!
It really is, I just use the same fabric that I'm sewing with but you're right I definitely wouldn't use anything heavier than what I'm sewing with & neither would I try it in a denim. 🤗
I’ve used that for years too, as a quilter. It’s not different or easier, than what you showed. We had to turnout a lot of bias binding for the edges quilts. But I’ve never been able to get my little bias tape maker to work. Given up. 😂
Thank you so much for this! This is my “lost” technique. I learned this years ago (30 years?) but lost track of it. I don’t remember where I learned it and I’ve never seen it since. Of course, I never do make bias binding 😂 which is why I lost the technique in the first place. But if I ever do, I know where to find it again now. 😀
I've just unpicked this for the second time. Struggling to see the difference between the lengths of the sides of your triangle with that floral print. Maybe bold stripes would have been more illustrative. Also struggling with the use of the terms "straight side" and "diagonal side" when you refer to the triangle. Surely all sides are straight AND "diagonal" on a triangle. My fabric now has frayed edges and lines going in every direction drawn on it - maybe third time will be lucky for me, since you make it look so easy!
Well that was like chuffin witchcraft! Amazing!
🤣
🧙♀️
Ha Ha, what are you calling me now 🤪
This tip is like MAGIC!! Thank you so much!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
You’re very welcome Stephanie 🤗
Wow a great tip it will save me wasting so much fabric x thank you x
I know, don't you just hate having a random diagonal strip going across fabric that you could otherwise use!
I’ve never seen this method before ~ absolutely fabulous !!!
Glad you like it 🤗
This is fab Sam! I don’t think I’ll ever do it any other way again! Thank you 🙏
You're welcome, glad it was useful Pippa🤗

Aw thank you - glad it was helpful!
Thank you Sam this was so helpful. Love the little tips you give us.
You're welcome, glad it was helpful 🤗
I love home made bias tape but not tried this method so another winner Sam.
Great to hear Annette, hop that it works for you 🤗
I tried this method and it worked beautifully! Thank you for the tutorial!
You're welcome 🤗
Thank you. I'll definitely be doing this in future! Xx
Fantastic, let me know how you get on 🤗
@@Frugalisama I will do, thank you x
Great tutorial Sam…I tried it out this morning and it was amazing the amount you get out of such a small square…thank you for sharing such a handy tip!, 🙂
So glad that it worked for you Isobel, it's great way to save fabric 🤗
Thanks Sam! I just tried this for the 1st time. I got 43" out of a 8" square! It is magic! 🎩 🪄 🔮
So glad it was useful Chrissy & thank you so much for the KoFi 🤗
This is brilliant! I am definitely using this! Thank you so much for sharing!
You're welcome 🤗
Thank you Sam. I have heard of this method but never seen it done. I am going to try it myself. Thank you 🙏
You're welcome Carol, hope that you like the method 🤗
That was fantastic. What a great idea. Thanks a ton.
You're very welcome!
Really good video. I knew about it but never did. It makes sense now. Thanks. 😊
Glad it was helpful Bridget !
Thank you, It came out good, the first time.
Great to hear!

Hope you enjoy, play around with some scraps 🤗
Another great tip, cannot wait to try. Thank you for sharing 😀
You are so welcome! 🤗
Thank you! I have never seen this in action before. I like that you don't have to sew many strips together! I will try this.
Yes it's a lot less time consuming & confusing 🤪
Thank you, this is extremely helpful.
You're very welcome 🤗
Thats brillant sam im going to try that today, thankyou for your great videos x
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you Sam - just used your tutorial for my #JacketJanuary project! xx
Fab, glad it was helpful Tamlyn 🤗
This looks realy handy. I gonna tray that. Thank you very mutch.😊
You’re welcome 😊

Oh that's great to hear, glad it was helpful 🤗
Great tutorial Sam - actual wizardry! I’m going to try it making use of the fat quarters I don’t use from SHJ boxes 👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks Paula, great idea to use your fat quarters, they can be tricky to use if you're not into crafting & you'll have some ready to gor next time you need some 👍
That's amazing that you can get such a long piece of bias binding from such a small square of fabric! I'm definitely going to try it!
I know, it's incredible how much you ca get from so little! Have fun experimenting 🤗
So useful to know Sam.....your videos are so helpful and useful 😊
Oh that's lovely to hear - glad you like them 🤗
I love this! And you can can always be sure you've got matching binding! What's not to love. Thanks.
Absolutely 🤗
Great technique Thank You for sharing 🙌🏻❤️
You're welcome Sarah 🤗

Yes it's surprising how much you can get out of so little 👍
Perfect timing! I got my bias tape maker from Amazon in the mail 20 minutes ago!
Thank you, Sam!
Ha ha really, well no excuse now Jude! 😘
Genius! Thanks!

Thank you so much. I look forward to trying this out tomorrow

Really useful, thanks, Sam. The other method I'd seen and used was much more labour-intensive and also left me amazed at how much fabric it suggested I needed to commit. This is much more frugal! 😁
I know what you mean, I hate having to use up loads of fabric for binding 😉
Hi there Sam. I tried it but my first mistake was that I drew the lines on the wrong side, did it over and it took me about 3/4 of an hour to get it right. But i did mine in a 2" strip so it was a little complicated but i got through. Thanks for sharing. I'll definitely have to do it a few more times to get it right. I do have a 2" bias maker. 👍👍👍👍👍
Great tutorial, I've used this method and agree it's a great way to do it. Thanks for the "calculator", not seen that before, really useful.
Glad it was helpful, Sarah, it took some finding again did that calculator 🤣

You're welcome, you could perhaps starch you're fabric if it's being a little wayward 😉

Yes I always join at the wrong angle, that's why I love this method, only 2 seams to sew & you're done !
This is the way i make my bias binding and find it so easy. Its a great way to use up scraps as well. i save my empty thread spools and wrap it around them.
Ah, yes fab idea Carin 👍
Thank you so much for showing us how to make this. Going on a scout round for some fabric scraps now 😀
Have fun! You'll have lots of lovely bias all ready for your next project 🤗
Very cool. A couple of my I have patterns you have to cut the bias tape from the fabric and it cuts through the middle of the fabric which seems unnecessary. So I started doing little strips. Your tutorial looks like it will save waste and time. Thank you
Yes a lot of patterns do that & it really bugs me that I could use the fabric for something else 😉
Thank you Sam. This is a revelation. Wish I’d seen this yesterday. I spent ages making bias binding by cutting single strips and joining them one by one. I’ll definitely be doing it your way next time. Cheers!

This is fantastic, I cannot tell you how many times I have cut strips and sewn them together wrong, ending up with a right angle to unpick
I know exactly what you mean Andrea - been there 😉
I will try this out thank you.
Hope it works for you 🤗
That was impressive!
thank you 😉
Wooow. I will try that!

You're welcome Letitia, yes the Vera is lovely isn't it 🤗
New subscriber! I love making bias binding 💜💜 I worked 14 years in theatre, making bias is something we did a lot!
Thanks for subscribing, did you use this method or is there a trade secret that you can share 😉
Amazing 😍😍
That is magic Sam. Will definitely try that the next time! I actually thought you could only use cotton fabric to make bias binding but I take it that's viscose u are using. 💕
Yes this was a medium weight viscose - you can spray starch anything that is a bit slippy slidey 😉
Xx

I just made bias binding today that took forever from all the joining. Thank you for this tutorial.
Glad it was helpful - hate joining all those strips, I inevitably get them the wrong way round 🤣
Oooh! I definitely need to try this. Looks super efficient - both for time and fabric use.
It really is!
Just about to try this method 🤞. Haven’t seen any videos from you lately, hope that you are well.
Hope it worked out for you, yes I'm fine thank you, just been a bit busy with other things, just about to upload a video today - should be a bit more regular now hopefully 🤗

Aw thanks Alissa, sometimes it just makes more sense seeing a technique demonstrated I think 🤗
I will definitely try this. Although I love a facing.
I don't mind a facing, as long as it behaves itself 🤣
This is the same technique I use to make T shirt yarn. Why didn't I think to use it for binding? Thank you for sharing.
Mmm t-shirt yarn sounds intriguing - glad it was helpful!
I prefer this method of making bias binding because when I cut strips and then sew them together I always end up with the join seam allowance on both sides because I've sewn them together wrong, lol. I don't bother binding my quilts with bias strips, on grain or cross grain strips work just as well in my opinion.
I haven't made a lot of quilts - one to be precise 🤣 But yes it would seem very wasteful & time consuming to cut on the bias for them 😊
This was helpful! Of course I just spent a lot of money on bias binding from Etsy haha! But I'll use this in the future for sure!!
🤣

I have always done long strips and joined, the waste really annoys me so I am definately going to try this way, thanks for the tip.
You're welcome, yes I hate waste too 🤗

Omg!🤯👏👏👏

Ha ha, I know what you mean, you've got to use it lose it 😉
Brilliant! I have 4 bias tape makers but am never sure what width of fabric I should be cutting for each...how can u tell?
That's a very good question, your maker should have a number on top I usually use a number 12 for 1" wide bias
I've just unpicked this for the second time. Struggling to see the difference between the lengths of the sides of your triangle with that floral print. Phew, third time lucky! I'll need totry againa few more times to get the hang of it.
Glad you got it sorted Fiona - sorry if it was unclear - it's good to get constructive feedback for future videos 🤗
