i always dislike when people hate on media aimed at kids for "heavy topics" when.. kids go through these things? kids witness marital issues, witness money struggles? they NEED that representation. they NEED that to feel seen and to help cope with everything. it's so incredibly important.

I stole a Nintendo power magazine from the local Barnes and Noble, because I was a dumb kid. I took it home and for months was plagued with paranoia that my mom would find it, so I only opened it up at night to avoid detection. Within this Nintendo power was a multi-page feature on chibi robo. Somehow my brain's wires have remained so crossed that as soon as I saw this pop up on my subscription feed I was immediately terrified in that same childlike way just by seeing chibi robo again, so thank you for that.

I think that something really interesting you touched lightly on is that, in some ways, Chibi Robo is a game about spending your energy helping people and finding yourself rewarded for doing it. It's about showing up for people and making a difference while still making sure to take care of yourself. It seems like a lovely game and a lesson certainly worth being in a kid's game.

The early-mid 2000's really had weirdly a lot of games where you're just a really little guy doing things in a big world.
    - Pikmin 1 and 2
    - Katamari
    - Chibi Robo
There's probably more but those few were arguably the most mainstream.

I had the pleasure of talking with Hirofumi Taniguchi (the sound designer and composer for Chibi-Robo!) and got to chat about how this game holds a special place in my heart ever since I got it at a Gamestop at like age 8. He also agrees that this entry is his favorite, though he did also work for composing Chibi-Robo Photo Finder as well (the others were composed by different people.)
Also the voice lines for Sarge are most likely sampled from a Monty Python movie "The Meaning of Life". I asked him about it, he didn't mention it directly, but said that they'd often "imitate" actors' voices themselves. - Though I did my own research and edited the movie, sure enough both Sarge and the Free Rangers were chopped up, pitched differently and sped up to get the distinct sound. (Most likely other characters' voices were the same, after watching the movie in full I heard at least 2 other instances of people who likely had their voice sampled and used in Chibi-Robo as well.)

I found about Chibi-Robo through SSF2. He’s one of those characters who I don’t know much about but his design even in a fan game shows how interesting his is. I love how music ties into his actions.
His side special is the toothbrush and I was really happy when I found out how to (or realized I could) make the entire song play without him brushing all the way into the blast zone.

Hearing about Chibi Robo always makes me sad. The first game was so full of heart and well written and I’m glad that’s explored here since the actual fate of the series (being doomed to fail and turned into a soulless platformer before being abandoned) is far too well known. Especially with how many indie studios are being killed off by bigger companies and how many of said companies expressed disinterest in experimentation, it shows that it doesn’t matter how good something is, how loved it is, even how well it sells-if it isn’t an entry in a best selling series, it means nothing to the industry.
Indie games are absolutely carrying the gaming landscape, but I don’t know how long that’ll last given their treatment and rising costs of both development and general living conditions. We need games like Chibi Robo again :(

    Yakko, what the Funk.
I went from "Oh, cool. A New yakko video to check out", to crying about a lego truck and some dancing flowers from a game i heard in passing once over 7 years ago. 🙃

The early section about Chibi-robo's sound design reminds me of my own experience with the game Abe's Oddysee. While i never beat the game, and have issues with some of it's gameplay elements, one thing that stood out to me about the game and still lives rent free in my head is the sound effects and noises the various characters and their interactions with the environment make. As such i would recommend Yakko try out this game just for that experience alone and it isn't even necessary to beat the game to get it. Just playing around for a few hours is more than enough. And to fellow Abe's Oddysee enjoyers i say: Heddo.

Chibi Robo is in the same camp as Bayonetta, in that Namco technically owns the rights to the series, but Nintendo has published and even developed the entire series. It was never a big seller, so Nintendo doesn't feel the need to work with Namco on future projects.

Before you made the comparison between Persona I was like "wait, does he play only Persona music on purpose, because the games are so similar, and have the same strengths that make'em really really good games?" Cuz... It would be wild.

Oh my stars, thank you for talking about this game Yakko! Hearing anyone mention Chibi Robo in this day and age feels so nostalgic to me. It was such an iconic and influential piece of my childhood, I truly wish it had a better chance at success. There's nothing more charming than an itty bitty robot helping ease a family's woes, thru little actions that eventually make a big impact. I can think of no other game with this level of creativity, I would love to see a full remake of it one day!!!

I remember exactly how i found out about chibi-robo, was a kid shopping with my mom and grandma at k-mart and they had one of those gamecube demo stands with the tv in the top of it and chibi-robo was on it as a demo. I played that thing the entire time they were shopping and they had to drag me away from it to get me to go home.

I've had this game since i was a little kid, first playthrough giga-robo's battery never got installed in the chibi-house so i just... kept playing the game and gathering happy points until i was at rank 2 (just before 'super chibi-robo' rank, not understanding why it hadn't triggered yet😅) not realizing i was softlocked.
I didn't realize this until years later, started a new save and went through the whole game during covid lockdown. (Sidenote: Was NOT expecting aliens to show up of all things 😂)

I got it originally as a hand-me-down from my older brother but I gave it back to him when he moved out and im incredibly tempted to see if i can find another copy for my personal collection. Whats there not to love about being a little guy taking care of some flowers and befriending other toys?

Honestly, it's kind of sad to see that some of the criticism was "well, it looks adorable, but the story is too mature for a kid's game." It feels like it's condemning both the artistic value of games *and* the intelligence of kids. I was a teen when I played this game, back when it was relatively new. I loved it then, and it stuck in my memory as a fantastic adventure with moments that were brutally real for the game about an adorable house cleaning bot with psychedelic living toy friends.
There are a *lot* of Gamecube games that went all sorts of wild and weird places, which don't really get covered today and likely wouldn't be brought into the modern era, but deserve attention nonetheless. Thank you for bringing this one back into memory.

Mirai is a film where the director based the main little children characters off his own kids an the whole films so real as heck
"When watching this film I know how much you love our kids" is the best thing to hear from your wife

I always love your videos, but Chibi Robo was a big part of my childhood! I really just happened upon it one day in a gamestop when I was a kid, and just by chance my dad bought it for me. I mean the stars really aligned for me to get this game because the cashier actually never put the disc in the box, so we had to make a whole trip back to get the actual game lol. That's the way this game got into my hands and has left a lasting impact on me. I need to dust off my gamecube and replay it soon! Excellent video as always Yakko!
