I'm copying and pasting, if that's ok: This is a book I will re read. I only discovered it during hard lockdown (I live in South Africa). It led me to read 8 of his other books. I've never read so many books by one author. I love the way he deals with important issues. I love the way his books are so diverse (eg "The House of Special Purpose" and "This House is Haunted"). His writing is sublime and his sense of humour as well as his sensitivity makes me an ardent fan
I loved this book! And I'd love for John Boyne to know his book was a factor in my decision to visit Ireland recently (it reminded me that Ireland had legalized same-sex marriage by referendum). Very lovely country.
Unfortunately it hasn't been translated to my my language yet.I couldn't wait so I ordered the book in its original version. And two weeks ago John Boyne released another book A Ladder to the Sky which received great reviews
Yes, it's funny. But it's also a perfect encapsulation of the lunacy and phoniness of confession. The priest being clueless, the kid making up meaningless acceptable sins, the transparent human prurience, the total lack of logic, the inability to cope with real human issues, the nonsense of absolution. It says all that needs to be said about the kind of bollocks the church puts forward as sacred rites. Loved the book, and I'm now working my way through Boyne's entire body of work.
One of the funniest novels I've ever read. God I love Irish people. Mr. Boyne is gifted af.
Just read this part, I laughed out loud so much. That and when Charles was speaking during Julian’s investigation.
John Boyne--bless his heart--can combine the deadly serious and the totally absurd better than anyone alive.

Wonderful book. So funny and so sad.

It was the last confession for both.
What a great book!

An amazing book!
Not funny, but this guy's a good writer.
