I’m reading a lot of critical comments here about Alain that I think are unfair. I get that he may not have the appropriate credentials to provide therapeutic services, but that doesn’t mean he can’t have great insight into the human condition (e.g., what ails us, what gives life meaning, what makes relationships flourish, etc.). I work in human services and frequently communicate with allied mental health professionals who don’t possess anywhere near as much skill in articulating thought-provoking ideas about mental health and well-being. I don’t think he’s a charlatan selling easy solutions to life’s challenges. He’s simply inviting us to think about things in different ways, and sometimes that’s all it takes to help people course-correct. I’ll speak for myself in saying thank you, Alain, for your wonderful body of work-it’s had a significantly positive impact on my life. Cheers.
Well, I also wasted time and money on those people with so called credentials and they were complete a-holes who couldn’t help me. So may I know why are credentials so important? Is it not more important to find someone like Alain who shows genuine empathy and is able to help us find meaning insights and genuine solutions! Sadly most people just don’t have that level of intelligence to fairly comment on such an important topic but alas, the Dunning Krueger effect is in full effect!
I haven't seen negative comments, but many outstanding people in human history had no "credentials", and demanding those credentials goes to childishness. Leonardo Da Vinci had no considerable educational background, and he was one of the greatest geniuses of mankind.
I couldn’t agree more. Anyone who’s experienced a profound therapeutic journey knows that Alain is speaking from deep personal experience combined with careful thought. This video is the best summary of the therapeutic journey I’ve come across anywhere.
I'm a registered BACP counsellor and Alain de Botton is offering a superb masterclass in psycheducation on some fundamental ideas which are helpful to understanding because they're presented in a concise and articulate way. He expresses himself beautifully, better than some mental health professionals.
In every field, there are credentialed people who are incompetent, mediocre at best. Credentials definitely count but don't represent the whole of what a person contributes..@FloatingFont
It didn't even take a minute to recognize that this is the voiceover on The School of Life's videos. Thank you for such splendid narrations and insightful ideas to live better, Alian. 🙏🏿
When I read about Socrates, Plato and all those great philosophers of old, I always wish I lived in their time. Now, in hundreds of years to come, people will perhaps be reading about Alain de Bottom and will wish they lived in his time. It is therefore such a great feeling to know I live in his time.
I started my Therapeutic Journey in July 2016. . I found my therapist after 2-3 interviews with others. One wouldn't give me 5 minutes on the phone: wanted to charge me to come in and chat. The other had a waiting room with a bookcase full of clown dolls and a poster of a hobo clown sitting on a park bench reading the Wall Street Journal. Still don't know what THAT was all about. I found my fit with my current doc and committed to the long haul. He didn't fix my life. Our work together has been teaching me to become my own psychotherapist. We're in the finer details now and it has been a joyous journey. Ooops. I didn't mean to ramble. Best of Luck to everyone seeing this. Keep at it. Activate your inner hero!
It is spot on what you are saying. It is sad to see though that environments as children we are brought up in isn't as blessed as others or as lucky. I know our lives are what and how we make it, but life is also hard for too many who have not had healthy fundamentals to inspire and build one's future life upon.
Well said. It's interesting how some are raised in a nurturing, loving environment yet don't use it to build much of a life and others who didn't get that strong foundation build an ok life, but wonder if could have been more if not fighting the instability of rickety foundation.
I hv worked for 30 plus years in mental health teams …. Seriously… if only people knew that therapists often follow fads, apply bits and pieces of training without deep knowledge and are often running on instinct. They can be good people but there is often something going on with their egos ..
Alain offers genuine insight that can help people learn how to deal with their issues if they take the time to do the work. IMy insurance selected so-called "professional" counselors and therapists who provided really bad advice or no advice at all...asking "how does that make you feel?" is not helpful, I'm seeking therapy because I KNOW how I feel and want to learn better coping and self-examination techniques. Those discounting Alain's good advice because he's not a licensed therapist obvious have no understanding of mental health treatment techniques or they would recognize good advice when they hear it.
Better than some SOL animations, I think Great ideas. Although I like some SOL animations, they can be distracting, gimmicky. Technique can obscure the message and the lesson on SOL. Thanks Alain for sharing. ======================================================================
If anybody is criticizing Alain they clearly: - haven’t read any of his books - likely can’t understand any of his books because they’re idiots - live through social media and making RUclips comments to validate their lonely and meagre existences
Don't listen to this guy. He's not a mental health professional. Not all of this applies to everyone and he's clearly not familiar with research on what actually makes therapy effective. Look up the psychologist Paul Wampold for that.
@1DangerMouse1 I think you're making the point (which I believe is more or less true) that Alain and his team have not learned to contextualize his personal philosophies to the established therapeutic treatments of specific illnesses he talks about

I'm a BACP-accredited and registered psychotherapist, and I thoroughly endorse all that Alain says.
Right. Your small text of words from a miscellaneous youtube account has validated this mans entire public work and proven accreditations- for sure.

I love Alan's way of speaking, explaining, and being concise with such grace. It's a real privilege having access to his videos and books.
It’s such a relief to know that there is not such a thing as a normal person 😊
Thank you Alain!
Haha, I read it as Thank you Alian! :) It makes sense.. :D
So good 😆 Was freeing for me too!
I’ve been following Alain de Bottom’s content for a decade-it’s made all the difference.
Alain and the school of life are the greatest gifts ive received from RUclips ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Amen
If you read this, you are an amazing person and I am happy that you exist🖤
I would like to have Allain De Botton as my therapist.

Not just the voiceover, he is the founder of the school of life

what an intriguing and thought-provoking video!! Fantastic suggestions for introspection also... bravo Alain/Penguin 👍
Another lightbulb video from this king of clarity. More absorbing than scandi noir drama and infinitely more scary when applied to self.
Finde ich schön gesagt und erklärt ❤
Merci Alain for your reassuring words.
Thank you gratefully for everything you say and do! I am honoured to live in the same time frame and these world events with you! Thank you!❤
I couldn’t say it better myself! 👏
I truly appreciate what he has to contribute to this issue.
Brilliant just brilliant insight ! Thank you.
Thank you Alain. I have learned so much from you and The School of Life ! ❤❤❤
Thank you Mr. Botton !

This is a gem of a video!!
A very useful book, Alain 🙋
I think he is talking about the false self (not the 'full' self as it says in the subtitles). It sounds like a really interesting book!
if parts of your body had a voice what would it want to say. this is powerful!!!!!

If only psychotherapy was affordable
Spot. Comment! It’s only for the wealthy.
The body does not lie
what if your parent died when you were young?
This didn't speak to me, I must therefore be fully self-actualised

Damn you like an alien.
Though really love your works.
You listen to the things you would of done , instead of doing it.

Too bad shaped operating in the present
I thought for a moment he had finally shaved his hair.. what a shame he didnt
Aren't you a brilliant one?!

The pseudo-philosopher has now entered into pseudo-psychotherapy. Wonderful.
What exactly is pseudo about what he says?
And can you provide some viable "non-pseudo" alternatives

I don't think he said he was a mental health professional.
Nevertheless, his insights are great if you disagree, don't buy the book
So pressed. I think you should take some tips from this video.
Ahh yes...the "evidence" says we should try CBT and if that fails medication right?...let me know how that's working out for you?
Why are you afraid of him then? Some legal prescribed drugs work better, isn't it?
