Sam doesnt understand actual Buddha Dharma. The spiritual cultivation in Buddhist tradition is to understand the nature of reality. The root cause of of suffering is due to our illusion and ignorance of the 'self' which does not exist independently in reality. The peace we experience by believing in Creator is only temporary and not sustainable. It will be gone and need constant prayer to supress the doubt. The real peace is through Insight from the inner meditation and sustainable. Just like in any other religion, there are many nominal adherents but there are many spiritual Buddhists as well. Sam shall consult those real spiritual Buddhists to get the true understanding. Any way, wish him well.
I don't know much about Buddhism, but i do know that they don't believe in a Creator. Which is cannot be possible since we live in universe that had a beginning and will have an end even science can prove that. And without a Creator how can we know the purpose of our existence since we are beings who have a limit storage of knowledge. Not to mention Buddha as a prince left his own wife and son, what kind a "wise man" would do something like that. I follow Jesus because he is the incarnation of the Eternal Creator who gave us the purpose to subdue the earth and who would never leave his love ones for himself.
